Abstract:
This thesis explores the possibilities for ecocritical study in fiction through John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath. Major ecocritical interpretation has yet to gain much traction in novels; by focusing on human nature, this form’s “anthropocentric” posture seems itself to be antithetical to ecocritical efforts, which aim to unseat humans as the center of the moral universe. However, by analyzing The Grapes of Wrath’s formal, narratorial, and thematic valences, I argue that principles of social justice concurrently imply environmental justice in the philosophical currents of the te

Steinbeck's intention is the sympathetic portrayal of the human cost of mechanised agricultural revolution. The story plots the collision of old value systems with new profit driven capitalistic drives (Thompson and Kutach, 1990:143). The attendant ramifications see a great shift in the rural populat

Critics have argued that John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is a novel about social and inner changes. As the Joad family starts its journey to California, the reorganization of the family becomes essential to their survival. In times of material loss, Ma Joad breaks with patriarchal rules, emerges as the new leader of her family, and plays more than the housewife role assigned to the women of her time. She becomes, then, an essential figure to the maintenance of the family's integrity. The aim of this study is to analyze the way in which the determination of new social values, especially th

Later they found numerous applications, for instance, in DNA sequencing. We show how de Bruijn graphs and their generalizations can be presented as Cayley and Schreier graphs of lamplighter groups.

Since this is a novel reflecting the social event of the Okies’ migration, the readers may wonder whether or not Steinbeck’s narration corresponds to reality.
