Abstract:
Abstract Thoughtful Images: Illustrating Philosophy Through Art is the first systematic investigation of how artists throughout the ages have illustrated philosophical texts, ideas, concepts, and theories. The book begins by developing a theory of visual illustrations of philosophical texts and undermining what the author calls “the denigration of illustration.” It then takes a more historical approach, beginning in Ancient Greece and Rome and proceeding through medieval illuminations and printed broadsides to the frontispieces of philosophical texts. Throughout, attention is paid to how techn

“The Bible and Graphic Novels and Comic Books” argues that Protestants used images for a surprising range of religious purposes in their twentieth-century comic book Bibles. The chapter provides a brief theoretical overview of the medium of sequential art and the relationship between words and images in Protestant comic book Bibles. It also examines the history of Protestant comic book Bible production from the 1930s to the 2010s. The chapter argues that changing artistic styles in comic books reveal changing religious and cultural sensibilities in twentieth-century American Protestantism. The

Rosenthal’s book, Tatti Wattles: A Love Story, reveals her aesthetic practice itself to be animated by the discourse of species. The drawings in this text, especially, suggest that Rosenthal’s self-identification as an artist is mediated by animality. The images also efface the human yet “en-face” the rat, de-emphasizing human power and privilege. These images are also marked by Rosenthal’s “auto-graphy” as a mover or dancer, by an alimentary tropology highlighting the body, by the concept of mediation, and by the taming of human exceptionalism. The argument follows that all of these elements

In a follow-up to Comics as Philosophy, this book addresses two questions: which philosophical insights, concepts, and tools can shed light on the graphic novel? And how can the graphic novel cast light on the concerns of philosophy? Each chapter ponders a well-known graphic novel to illuminate ways in which philosophy can untangle particular combinations of image and written word for deeper understanding. The chapters examine notable graphic novels within the framework posited by these two questions. One chapter discusses how a philosopher discovered that the panels in Jeff Lemire's Essex Cou

Abstract:
The Many Lives of Andy Warhol is more than a biography: it’s a look into Warhol’s greatest creation: himself. Warhol was known as the king of pop art, but the famous artist was secretly never satisfied with a single style and his journey took him from graphic designs of shoes, women’s fashions and glamour magazines to owning and publishing his own film and gossip magazine, Interview. Stuart Lenig takes us behind the scenes to explore Warhol’s many innovations in the art world. Warhol was a titanic technician, making art from new techniques. Abstract:
Francesco da Firenze (often called Landini) and Antonio da Teramo were two of the most important Italian composers of the late fourteenth centuries. Though both reached the pinnacles of fame, contemporary descriptions and pictorial images of both composers highlight aspects of disability. Francesco “il Cieco” was blind, and Antonio “Zachara” was short of stature, wore his arm in a sling, and had only two or three fingers on each hand. Chronicles of their lives contain a narrative of compensation with respect to Francesco and an overcoming of disability for Antonio, who was scribe to the pope.

Mulata Nation traces the figure of the mulata, the woman of mixed racial heritage in Cuban artwork and performance from the colonial era through the modern to the contemporary. While perhaps most widely linked with sensuality and sexual desirability, the mulata also serves as the embodiment of Cuba’s spirituality, and as emblematic of Cuban identity. Through close readings of representations of the mulata in fine and graphic art, mulata performers and the performance of mulata characters at distinct historical and ideological moments, the book claims that far from being a static, flat figure,
