Abstract:
The article reveals the characteristic manifestations of the op-art style in British fashion on the examples of textile companies and individual designers, as well asin graphic design based on the analysis of printed products of British publications in the 1970s. It is claimed that the visual experiments of the op-art in the field of British fashion were most fully revealed in the activities of the textile companies "Heals", "Hull Traders" and "Edinburgh Weavers" and in the work of designer Mary Quant. And in graphic design — in the book covers of the popular science series "Pelican Books".

Abstract:
In the literature, the history of Swiss graphic design is regularly told as a linear development from illustrative tendencies to Modernist abstraction. Recent research has shown that these narratives were constructed and disseminated by a group of Modernist graphic designers through journals and their own publications. By the mid-1950s, the Modernists themselves began dividing designers of the time into two camps: the individual or illustrative versus the abstract or Modern. This dichotomy, which established itself quickly, continues to shape the narrative of Swiss graphic design to this day. However, this article argues that the reality of graphic design practice in Switzerland in the 1950s was more diverse than previously assumed. Outside an exclusive circle of practitioners, illustration and abstraction were understood more as design methods than as attitudes. Taking this as its starting point, this article looks beyond this dichotomy by drawing on unpublished sources of the time and, thereby, challenges the traditional understanding of Swiss graphic design.

Purpose. Investigate the features of the design of covers and pages of satirical publications in Odessa in the late XIX – early XX century. Identify the development and general features of the design of satirical periodicals of Odessa in the late XIX – early XX centuries. Methodology. The research methodology is based on comparative and historical methods that help to trace the relevant retrospective of the development of satirical periodicals. Applied art analysis allows to explore, identify, compare and describe the features of the design of certain publications. Results. On the basis of examples and the processed literary sources graphic-stylistic and technical features of artistic design of covers and pages of satirical periodicals of Odessa in the late XIX – early XX centuries are defined. The design of covers of such magazines as «Pchelka», «Crocodil», «Bomba» is analyzed. It was found that the considered editions did not follow a single style of graphic material, but this did not interfere with the overall design. Most satirical magazines had a symmetrical hierarchical cover composition with a limited polychrome palette. The development of humorous and satirical publications from simple leaflets with caricatures to magazines with high-quality art design is traced. The semantic load of the visual material of the analyzed satirical editions is determined. Scientific novelty. The general features of artistic design of covers and pages of satirical editions of Odessa of the end of XIX – the beginning of XX century are defined. Practical significance. The given data concerning the design of covers and pages of satirical magazines of Odessa of the end of XIX – the beginning of XX century will help in understanding of traditions of the Ukrainian graphic design.

Abstract:
Previous historiography of graphic design education in the mid-twentieth century is shaped by published theories and educational principles of a limited circle of design teachers. As a counterbalance, this article stresses the relevance of a marginalized source: design student magazines. It juxtaposes K and output, published in the early 1960s at the Basel School of Design and the Ulm School of Design. Both magazines intended to open critical debates at their schools, but took opposite paths regarding design, editorial concept, content of articles, and critical engagement with their respective schools' design philosophies. An analysis of their reception and context reveals the magazines' corrective potential for design education by raising crucial issues within the design discourse of the 1960s.

Abstract:
The learning of programming is a field of research with relevant studies and publications for more than 25 years. Since its inception, it has been shown that its difficulty lies in the high level of abstraction required to understand certain programming concepts. However, this level can be reduced by using tools and graphic representations that motivate students and facilitate their understanding, associating real-world elements with specific programming concepts. Thus, this paper proposes the use of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that helps during the learning of programming by using a notation based on a metaphor of roads and traffic signs represented by 3D graphics in an augmented reality (AR) environment. These graphic visualizations can be generated automatically from the source code of the programs thanks to the modular and scalable design of the system. Students can use them by leveraging the available feedback system, and teachers can also use them in order to explain programming concepts during the classes. This work highlights the flexibility and extensibility of the proposal through its application in different use cases that we have selected as examples to show how the system could be exploited in a multitude of real learning scenarios.

Abstract:
Suitable graphic documentation is essential to ascertain and conserve architectural heritage. For the first time, accurate digital images are provided of a 16th-century wooden ceiling, composed of geometric interlacing patterns, in the Pinelo Palace in Seville. Today, this ceiling suffers from significant deformation. Although there are many publications on the digital documentation of architectural heritage, no graphic studies on this type of deformed ceilings have been presented. This study starts by providing data on the palace history concerning the design of geometric interlacing patterns in carpentry according to the 1633 book by López de Arenas, and on the ceiling consolidation in the 20th century. Images were then obtained using two complementary procedures: from a 3D laser scanner, which offers metric data on deformations; and from photogrammetry, which facilitates the visualisation of details. In this way, this type of heritage is documented in an innovative graphic approach, which is essential for its conservation and/or restoration with scientific foundations and also to disseminate a reliable digital image of the most beautiful ceiling of this Renaissance palace in southern Europe.

Horrell, Douglas. "The engaging line: E. Mervyn Taylor's prints on Maori subjects." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Art History, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/891.

Full text
Abstract:
E. Mervyn Taylor (1906-1964) was a pakeha artist whose prints drew influence from Maori culture and motif. He was one of a small number of artists who developed interest in Maori culture during the 1940s and 1950s. He expanded interest into detailed study of Maori culture, and interaction with Maori, and produced a significant body of prints on this subject during his career. Taylor's prints were acclaimed during his lifetime, but in the decades after his death, his reputation faded to the extent that he became relatively obscure. This persisted until the late 1980s, when art historical reassessment of his work began. This thesis forms a part of this continued re-evaluation. It focuses on Taylor's prints on Maori subjects, an area not sufficiently scrutinised in an academic context. It aims to reach deeper understanding of his prints through historical analysis of the factors that influenced him to choose Maori, and their culture as subjects for his artwork. The thesis also examines why Taylor's reputation was so emphatically based on his New Zealand heritage, as well as the quality of his craftsmanship, his beliefs about which formed the foundation of his philosophy. Nationalist and regionalist notions also figured in his aesthetic ideals. His prints are also placed in relation to the modern debate over cultural appropriation in art. Greater recognition and understanding of Taylor's oeuvre may be achieved by establishing why he chose Maori subjects, and what specific features they contributed to the character of his work.

As a graphic designer, my goal is to clearly express my clients' message to their intended audience. Based on the diversity of my clients and their products and services, finding a consistent style in my projects might be difficult, although there are usually some typical traits. With examples of my work and dialogue from leaders in the graphic design industry, I intend to point out a common thread that runs through all successful design projects, regardless of the projects' designer, era, or individual design elements (e.g., typography, copywriting, color, layout, imagery). Success comes from graphic design's ability to gain attention and encourage a response.

Abstract:
The ubiquity of technology has mediated the means of receiving content through digital networks; users have complete control over receiving, shaping, and sharing information. In contrast to the inherent elasticity of these networks, physical pieces of communication often manifest through a closed and highly controlled process. However, the increased prominence of user-interaction with media provides an opportunity to evaluate the design process as it applies to the creation of physical objects. Throughout much of my work, I investigate the potential for unloosening the control of designed objects by inviting others into the design process. By considering the audience as active participants, rather than passive receivers of communication, the designer becomes a facilitator for communication. Through the design of frameworks, the designer relinquishes some control of form or content, allowing author and audience to coalesce.

Abstract:
This research addresses the tactile illustrated book design, a work that enables the inclusion of the reader with visual impairments. The research is centered on how the message is expressed in the text and the image, from the understanding of typography, the layout, the language used in the illustration and mass production. The aim of the research is to discuss from the viewpoint of design the current production of this book category, on the understanding that the illustrated tactile book figure as a multi-sensory object that explores mainly the tactile perception, this being a feature also used to arouse the reader\'s curiosity in the literacy phase. For the reader, especially the blind, it is important to develop a tactile sensitivity in its childhood, therefore the physical book as a source of information is a fundamental tool of perceptual training. A great part of the production of illustrated tactile book is tied to knowledge originating from pedagogy, developed at the assistance centre for visually impaired and very often without the full involvement of the designer in the project. For this reason, in Brazil, books from different initiatives are similar and are characterized by traditional production, in accordance with didactic material for the blind. Recently, a new concept of multi-sensory books for children have been developed by a limited number of publishers, primarily European, exploring different finishing techniques in obtaining the tactile image. This research starts from the assumption that most of the images presented in the illustrated tactile books produced in Brazil are not interpreted by the blind. Will be presented the developments on this issue related to the understanding of image and text. Amongst them: the language of tactile drawings would be consonant with that of the blind reader? The embossing technique interferes in the reading process? The text assists in the understanding of the image? The rigid composition of the pages stimulate the reading? The absence of specific studies regarding the tactile illustrated book in the field of design and the strict bibliographic publications within the haptic reading led to the field survey: visits to specialized schools, visits to acessible museums and reading mediated by the target public. In addition, the analysis of six books, each one with different conceptions of tactile illustrations, was carried out, being three of them national: O Chapeuzinho vermelho, by Bia Villela, Abraço de urso, by Cláudia Cotes, Adélia sonhadora, by Lia Zatz; and three from abroad: Ruvidino in piscina, by Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano, Des vers de travers, by Anette Diesen and Petit souffle de vent, by Elisa Lodolo. The readings are meant to discuss the understanding of image, text and the book\'s composition. These books are analyzed based on references brought from graphic design and visual perception, with greater emphasis on the works of Bruno Munari and Rudolf Arnhein. Finally, it was produced a series of practical work of an experiential nature from narratives which intend to broaden the discussion about the process of designing a tactile illustrated book. The results demonstrated that the majority of tactile images present at Brazilian publications are not understood by blind readers - a set of associated factors corroborates to this result: the illustration language, the reproduction technique and absence of concrete in the relation between text and image.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to investigate the scope and change of m-learning literature over a period of thirteen years. The chapter takes an author co-citation approach where patterns are revealed in mlearning publications between the years 2002 and 2015. The author co-citation analysis is a kind of bibliometrics, and Power Flow Network Library (PFNET) analysis method to obtain the intellectual structure of the m-learning field. A PFNET is a psychometric scaling method where a network of associative nodes is generated using specific values. The method is based on graph theory and has been used to explore knowledge connections. The method is referred to as a pathfinder network for representing segments of knowledge in a branched manner. The method can also be used for developing consensus building or recognizing expertise in a specific area. In this study, it was found that the m-learning research focus on design and effectiveness of m-learning environments, developing a pedagogic framework for m-learning, adoption and proliferation of m-learning-assisted language learning, collaborative m-learning, and augmented reality. Assessing the results of factor analysis together with the PFNET graphics, the subfields show the fundamental orientations of the field, and the main themes will be the focus of future research.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 at first introduces the design of the empirical study (research agenda, approach, and methods adopted) of newspaper coverage of economic inequality in four countries. It describes the key selections and methods which defined the corpus of empirical materials at the heart of the authors’ original primary research. It then provides a summary overview of key aspects of our empirical research findings. Next, there is a summary discussion of the overall findings from the authors’ corpus of news media materials and data collection strategies. The chapter proceeds to examine the particular arguments in Piketty’s book which are either highlighted or neglected by the coverage in the newspaper articles forming the corpus of primary materials. It then moves on to present overall assessments of the coverage of Piketty’s book by the selected news media in the four countries. The authors identify and discuss how individual newspapers in the sample tend to agree or disagree with the key themes and argument in Piketty’s book. Responses engaging with the methods and data informing Piketty’s research and publications are also considered. Next, the chapter considers the newspapers’ engagement with discourses on economic inequality and the authors’ stances on whether or not economic inequality is problematic for the economy and society. An initial summary overview of trends in the discussion of Piketty’s policy proposals is presented, and the chapter concludes with the importance of sourcing. The following tables/graphs and figures—unless otherwise declared—are derived out of our empirical project and refer to original data generated throughout the project.

Abstract:
To define a future for the work described in this book, it is essential to keep in mind the broad goals which motivated the efforts in the first place. Useful and usable software is desired, to be sure, but the vision of manipulating and especially instructing a realistically behaved animated agent is the greater ambition. Some of our visions for the near future are presented, not just for the sake of prognostication, but for its exciting prospects and possibilities. Any discussion of the future of software must take into account the extraordinary pace of developments in the hardware arena. Even conservative predictions of hardware capabilities such as speed and capacity over the five year term lead one perilously close to science fiction. Accordingly, predictions of “better, faster, cheaper, more reliable, more fault tolerant, more highly parallel computers” are easy to make but do little to inform us of the applications these fantastic machines will facilitate. Rather, as general purpose computers improve in all these ways, specialized hardware solutions will decrease in importance and robust, usable software and symbiotic human-computer interfaces will remain the crucial link between a task and a solution. Transforming research into practice is a lengthy process, consisting of a flow of concepts from ideas through algorithms to implementations, from testing and analysis through iterated design, and finally transfer of demonstratably workable concepts to external users and actual applications. This entire process may span years, from the initial description of the concept to a fielded system. The publication of initial results often breeds over-optimism and has been known to lead researchers to allow false expectations to arise in the minds of potential users, with unfortunate results. (Automatic machine translation of text, speech understanding, and early promises of Artificial Intelligence problem solving are good examples of premature speculations.) At the other end of the spectrum, however, are concepts which take a long time to work their way into mainstream technological consciousness. (3D computer graphics is a good example where concepts and even working systems pre-dated widespread commercial availability by more than a decade.) So we will attempt to strike a balance in making speculations: while looking toward a long term research plan we will generally consider technology transfer to occur when serious but sympathetic users can experiment and accomplish real work with it.

Abstract:
Electronic publishing has a particularly significant application as a graphic product in the publication of some products such as books and newspapers that have traditionally been essential products of newspaper printing, book printing and the like. In the electronic publication of newspapers, there are certain templates that are related to the identity of the publisher. There is a number of published and printed editions of newspapers that were published before the introduction of electronic editions. Newspapers stick to tradition and try to transfer printed editions to electronic ones, that is, to do the so-called digitalization. The process of digitization is a complex and extensive work consisting of analysis and proper preparation of the transformation into a bit of a mapped image with the help of reproduction devices, rearranging and arranging data with OCR software, creating metadata, database management and web application development. As current products of graphic production, multimedia appears as a set of different media that affect the human senses. Procedures for digitalization of graphic products with essential elements are necessary, and various software tools are needed for the realization of the process. This paper points out the most important segments of previously mentioned procedures.

Abstract:
Patents contain valuable information for engineering design. However, the increasing number of annual patent publications makes it difficult for any individual designer to assimilate all up-to-date knowledge hidden in patent documents. In this paper, we proposed a computational approach to interpret design structure embedded in patent claims using pre-developed ontology libraries. The study combined natural language processing (NLP) techniques, text data-mining, ontological engineering, and our rule-based tree generation method. Data sources and adopted tools included online patent documents, knowledge gathered from engineering textbooks, WordNet, a part-of-speech tagger developed by the Stanford NLP group, and Graphviz. We showed that the framework proposed in the paper not only could help minimize manual work required for obtaining design structures but also enable automatic dissimilarity comparison between patents.

Abstract:
Requiring further investigation, hydrogen explosions and fires have occurred in several operating nuclear reactor power plants. Major accidents that were affected by hydrogen fires and explosions included Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima Daiichi. Smaller piping explosions have occurred at Hamaoka and Brunsbüttel Nuclear Power Plants. This paper is the first paper in a series of publications to discuss this issue. In particular, the different types of reactors that have a history of fires and explosions are discussed here, along with a discussion of hydrogen generation in commercial reactors, which provides the fuel for fires and explosions in nuclear power plants. Overall, this paper is a review of pertinent information on reactor designs that is of particular importance to this multi-part discussion of hydrogen fires and explosions. Without a review of reactor designs and hydrogen generation, the ensuing technical discussions are inadequately backgrounded. Consequently, the basic designs of pressurized water reactors (PWR’s), boiling water reactors (BWR’s), and pressure-tube graphite reactors (RBMK) are discussed in adequate detail. Of particular interest, the Three Mile Island design for a PWR is presented in some detail.

Abstract:
In well known conceptual design methods movement based working principles are considered to provide demanded key function of the future mechanism. Acceptable kinematical structures are searched within large number of topological diagrams generated on the base of original mechanism selected in accordance with functional demand. Further filtering of topological diagrams is leaving structures which are satisfactory for structural characteristics and additional functions. For many cases of mechanical design those concept design methods are not providing equal synthesis conditions for all functions, discriminating the rest of functions against the key function. The suggested novel concept design method [1] provides possibility of wide modifications of mechanism and function entities with mandatory dependence between sets of functions and mechanism’ various embodiments and implies application of identical design cycles for different stages of concept design. Some chapters of this method, as main idea, unified synthesis tools, modeling in concept design, graph and matrix based formalization of functions and mechanisms were presented in the earlier publications [2, 3]. Current study aims to formalize the concept design method itself, which facilitates presentation of the suggested design method and enables its formalized comparison with existing ones. Examples of product concept design are considered and resolved by existing methods and by the novel one, thus making obvious feature and performance efficiency evaluation.

Abstract:
The engineering structures composed from the rods (frames, trusses, etc.) are widely used in the various industrial applications. There are many publications presenting a theoretical modeling of the rod-based structural systems especially for the designs constructed from the thin-walled components. Usually, the single bar element of such system is taken as the basis for the general model development. The growth of the use of fast computer techniques has resulted in the extensive development of numerical methods where the main role belongs to the finite-element analysis. This paper presents a new approach to the numerical simulation and dynamic analysis of the rod systems based on the use of graphs in the numerical solutions for this class of problems. The main idea is that the solution of the global 3D problem for the whole system can be split into the number of simple one-dimensional problems for the individual elements (bars). Then, at each step of the numerical integration, these one-dimensional problems are linked with the common solution procedure for the original system using additional systems of equations written for the nodes (bar joints). In this way, the global coupling for all the original problem variables is guaranteed. Implementation of this method is illustrated in this paper for the flat two dimensional rod systems and incorporates finite-difference methods. The rod systems under consideration could be composed from an arbitrary number of the rectilinear bars/rods with different geometrical and physical characteristics. Also, the random topology of the bar joints and reactions in the system nodes can be realized. The advantage of the proposed approach is that not only dynamical behavior of the whole system, but also the transition nonstationary processes in the system components could be simulated for various combinations of the load applied and boundary conditions imposed.

Abstract:
Several mooring chains of an off-loading buoy failed after only 8 months of service. These chains were designed according to conventional fatigue assessment using API RP 2SK T-N curves to a fatigue life of 20 years with a factor of safety equal to 3 on life. Of particular interest is that the mooring chain failure underwent significant mooring chain motions that caused interlink rotations. Although traditionally neglected, these interlink rotations, when combined with significant chain tensions can cause bending stresses in the chain links. In this paper we identify a mechanism, here identified as Out-of-Plane Bending (OPB) that explains the extensive fatigue damage causing the mooring chains of the off-loading buoy to fail. A previous paper [4] presented experimental results of applying inter-link rotation to a pre-tensioned chain. Various pretension levels were used, with instrumentation to extract link angles and chain link stresses. In this paper, the physics of the OPB mechanism is examined through finite element models of the 124mm chain link tests. The various modes of interlink rotation are examined. The proof loading procedure that the chain undergoes at manufacture is identified as a likely cause for creating a tightly mated surface that is conducive to activating the OPB mechanism. To comply with Single Buoy Moorings (SBM) requirements addressing publication of internal research, many of the graphs included in this paper have had the stress values removed from the y-axis. However, with SBM’s management approval, some numerical references to stress amplitudes remain in the text. Overall, this limitation does not detract from the study, trends are evident and relevant comparisons can be made.

In this paper we identify a mechanism, here identified as Out-of-Plane Bending (OPB) that explains the extensive fatigue damage causing the mooring chains of the off-loading buoy to fail. A full scale test frame was constructed that has the capacity of applying inter-link rotation to a pre-tensioned chain. Although the test frame limits the number of links that can be tested together as a chain, a significant amount of testing was performed for the following chain sizes: 1. 81 mm Studded Grade R3S. 2. 107 mm Studdless Grade RQ3. 3. 124 mm Studless Grade R4. 4. 146 mm Studless Grade RQ4. Various pretension levels were used, with instrumentation to extract link angles and chain link stresses. In this paper the OPB mechanism is explained, and the test frame and results are presented. An empirical relationship is found to predict the OPB stresses in the chain links as a function of pretension and inter-link rotation. The OPB stress relationship obtained was applied to the failed mooring chain of the off-loading buoy with reasonable agreement. To comply with Single Buoy Moorings (SBM) requirements addressing publication of internal research, many of the graphs included in this paper have had the stress values removed from the y-axis. However, with SBM’s management approval, some numerical references to stress amplitudes remain in the text.
