Abstract:
The article reveals the characteristic manifestations of the op-art style in British fashion on the examples of textile companies and individual designers, as well asin graphic design based on the analysis of printed products of British publications in the 1970s. It is claimed that the visual experiments of the op-art in the field of British fashion were most fully revealed in the activities of the textile companies "Heals", "Hull Traders" and "Edinburgh Weavers" and in the work of designer Mary Quant. And in graphic design — in the book covers of the popular science series "Pelican Books".

Abstract:
In the literature, the history of Swiss graphic design is regularly told as a linear development from illustrative tendencies to Modernist abstraction. Recent research has shown that these narratives were constructed and disseminated by a group of Modernist graphic designers through journals and their own publications. By the mid-1950s, the Modernists themselves began dividing designers of the time into two camps: the individual or illustrative versus the abstract or Modern. This dichotomy, which established itself quickly, continues to shape the narrative of Swiss graphic design to this day. However, this article argues that the reality of graphic design practice in Switzerland in the 1950s was more diverse than previously assumed. Outside an exclusive circle of practitioners, illustration and abstraction were understood more as design methods than as attitudes. Taking this as its starting point, this article looks beyond this dichotomy by drawing on unpublished sources of the time and, thereby, challenges the traditional understanding of Swiss graphic design.

Purpose. Investigate the features of the design of covers and pages of satirical publications in Odessa in the late XIX – early XX century. Identify the development and general features of the design of satirical periodicals of Odessa in the late XIX – early XX centuries. Methodology. The research methodology is based on comparative and historical methods that help to trace the relevant retrospective of the development of satirical periodicals. Applied art analysis allows to explore, identify, compare and describe the features of the design of certain publications. Results. On the basis of examples and the processed literary sources graphic-stylistic and technical features of artistic design of covers and pages of satirical periodicals of Odessa in the late XIX – early XX centuries are defined. The design of covers of such magazines as «Pchelka», «Crocodil», «Bomba» is analyzed. It was found that the considered editions did not follow a single style of graphic material, but this did not interfere with the overall design. Most satirical magazines had a symmetrical hierarchical cover composition with a limited polychrome palette. The development of humorous and satirical publications from simple leaflets with caricatures to magazines with high-quality art design is traced. The semantic load of the visual material of the analyzed satirical editions is determined. Scientific novelty. The general features of artistic design of covers and pages of satirical editions of Odessa of the end of XIX – the beginning of XX century are defined. Practical significance. The given data concerning the design of covers and pages of satirical magazines of Odessa of the end of XIX – the beginning of XX century will help in understanding of traditions of the Ukrainian graphic design.

Abstract:
Previous historiography of graphic design education in the mid-twentieth century is shaped by published theories and educational principles of a limited circle of design teachers. As a counterbalance, this article stresses the relevance of a marginalized source: design student magazines. It juxtaposes K and output, published in the early 1960s at the Basel School of Design and the Ulm School of Design. Both magazines intended to open critical debates at their schools, but took opposite paths regarding design, editorial concept, content of articles, and critical engagement with their respective schools' design philosophies. An analysis of their reception and context reveals the magazines' corrective potential for design education by raising crucial issues within the design discourse of the 1960s.

Abstract:
The learning of programming is a field of research with relevant studies and publications for more than 25 years. Since its inception, it has been shown that its difficulty lies in the high level of abstraction required to understand certain programming concepts. However, this level can be reduced by using tools and graphic representations that motivate students and facilitate their understanding, associating real-world elements with specific programming concepts. Thus, this paper proposes the use of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that helps during the learning of programming by using a notation based on a metaphor of roads and traffic signs represented by 3D graphics in an augmented reality (AR) environment. These graphic visualizations can be generated automatically from the source code of the programs thanks to the modular and scalable design of the system. Students can use them by leveraging the available feedback system, and teachers can also use them in order to explain programming concepts during the classes. This work highlights the flexibility and extensibility of the proposal through its application in different use cases that we have selected as examples to show how the system could be exploited in a multitude of real learning scenarios.

Abstract:
Suitable graphic documentation is essential to ascertain and conserve architectural heritage. For the first time, accurate digital images are provided of a 16th-century wooden ceiling, composed of geometric interlacing patterns, in the Pinelo Palace in Seville. Today, this ceiling suffers from significant deformation. Although there are many publications on the digital documentation of architectural heritage, no graphic studies on this type of deformed ceilings have been presented. This study starts by providing data on the palace history concerning the design of geometric interlacing patterns in carpentry according to the 1633 book by López de Arenas, and on the ceiling consolidation in the 20th century. Images were then obtained using two complementary procedures: from a 3D laser scanner, which offers metric data on deformations; and from photogrammetry, which facilitates the visualisation of details. In this way, this type of heritage is documented in an innovative graphic approach, which is essential for its conservation and/or restoration with scientific foundations and also to disseminate a reliable digital image of the most beautiful ceiling of this Renaissance palace in southern Europe.

Abstract:
Development of forest resources is currently associated with significant difficulties, primarily due to unsatisfactory infrastructure in greater part of the forest area. It is necessary to create an effective, mathematically based forest infrastructure so that the forest industry will be developing actively. This will create the prerequisites for effective continuous and sustainable use of the forest. At the same time, the transport and economic availability of wood resources will increase significantly. There are many options for organizing the logging process by forestry enterprises. In most cases, they are selected by management based on personal experience. This study is a continuation of the work of the author's team on the complex problem of algorithmization and optimization of logging operations, taking into account the analysis of various moving and processing operations of wood resources. In previous publications, the authors presented a graphic-analytical model for solving the task. This article presents a description of the algorithm developed on the basis of the presented mathematical and graphic-analytical models for finding an effective technological chain of transport, loading and unloading and processing operations of the logging process in dynamic natural production conditions. The developed algorithm can be considered as a methodological basis for logging infrastructure design, taking into account the dynamically changing environment.

Abstract:
Today many students learn how to use desktop programs such as PageMaker and Ventura in technical communication courses; however, few of those students are also learning the principles of graphic design underlying the production of mechanicals. The ability to use a desktop publishing program does not necessarily guarantee the ability to produce well-designed and effective documents. In fact, the growing use of desktop publishing software has led to a proliferation of documents that violate all the rules of good design. This article describes a technical publications course in which students gain a better understanding of the principles of design and layout by using mechanical paste up techniques. When required to use mechanical paste up in addition to desktop publishing software, students acquired a more thorough understanding of grids and white space as well as a greater confidence in their abilities to do page design.

Abstract:
For the first time, there is presented the comprehensive analysis of the works of Soviet artists of book of the second half of the 1920s, engaged in the book design of the collected works. The flood of the book market with multi-volumes of fiction can be considered a kind of revenge of “big forms”, reaction to the previous stage of book culture, where brochure played the leading role. In the second half of the 1920s, the collected works were most often published in soft-covers. Each volume could be issued as a separate book, strikingly different from the other volumes. This gave the artists a certain freedom of manoeuvre and allowed to break the ingrained stereotypes. There was widely used a spectacular technique: the cover drawing was the same for all volumes, but the colouring of each volume varied. The aim of the article is to expand the established ideas about the book design of the 1920s, to consider and introduce into scientific circulation the forgotten works of known artists. The author carried out the comparative analysis of the multi-volumes issued by the leading publishing houses of those years, using the complex of complementary methods: bibliological, art historical and general historical.Gosizdat was the undisputed leader in the quantitative indicators of publications of the collected works, but its artistic policy in that area was characterized by old-fashioned conservatism tended to minimize the visual elements. The famous publishing house “Academia” in those years published the collected works quite rarely, but enriched the art of book with graphic cycles of such outstanding masters as V.A. Favorsky and N.P. Akimov. The book designers of the publishing house “Zemlya i Fabrika” were particularly successful and consistent in updating the appearance of the collected works: their works had a broad stylistic range and tendency to experiment. Creative search of artists of the 1920s deserves the attention of book historians, designers, illustrators, publishers, because it can give them productive creative ideas.

Abstract:
Film technology has become an increasingly prominent component of theatre design. In the practice of Robert Wilson and Robert Lepage it may support what has been described as a ‘pizza style’ of presentation, in which disparate techniques and modes of presentation are used to disturb conventional ideas of narrative, context, and textual authority, while in the work of Motionhouse it creates a language of dance as circus. The longstanding collaboration between film designer Ravi Deepres and choreographer Wayne McGregor presents an alternative model, at once highly composed as narrative and based on meticulous research into textual evidence. In this interview with David Roberts, Deepres charts the evolution of his work with McGregor up to their award-winning Woolf Works, showing how a genuinely collaborative artistic process and attention to the graphic possibilities of different film technologies have transformed our understanding of the role of design in devised performance. Ravi Deepres is Professor of Moving Image and Photography at Birmingham City University. For the past nineteen years he has designed shows in collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor. Their most recent success, Woolf Works, won the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and re-opened at La Scala Milan in April 2019. David Roberts is Professor of English at Birmingham City University. His recent publications include George Farquhar: A Migrant Life Reversed (Bloomsbury, 2018), and he is currently working on a new edition of Congreve's The Way of the World.

Abstract:
The work of William Playfair, who is often landed as an originator of most modern-day graphic methods, has received very Utile systematic scrutiny and analysis. Playfair made his graphic debut with the publication in 1786 of The commercial and political atlas; this cycled through several editions and permutations* With one or two exceptions, Play f air's second major graphic contribution was A letter on our agricultural distresses, their causes and remedies of 1821, While Playfak has been credited with having 'invented' bar, circle and pie graphics, it was ime graphics he favoured most and used most frequently This paper contains some observations on the evolution of his approach to the design of line graphics; it examines some of the pitfalls of this approach. His astute insight into the value of the graphic method is most noteworthy and is also examined in this paper.

Abstract:
In work is specified, that navigation safety of sailing to a great extent depends on the errors of the navigation measuring, and also from operating reliability of sensors of navigation information. It is also marked that descriptions of exactness of gyroscopic compass influence on navigation safety. Because sizes of his errors the requirements providing the set exactness of determination of azimuthal directions are produced. At maneuvering of ship there are inertia errors which cause appearance of lateral displacement of ship after his turn, that can lead to the navigation failure of ship. Therefore, there is the problem of decline of lateral relocation bias of ship which appears after his turn, that conduces to the decline of navigation accident rate. The analysis of the last achievements and publications is resulted in work, the decision of the considered problem and selection of parts unsolved before is begun in which. Within the framework of theory endless rapid maneuver, expression for total inertia deviation which depends on character of maneuver and breadth of sailing of ship is resulted in the publication. It is shown that transversal relocation bias of ship is an integral function in relation to the function of deviation and for estimation of its size analytical expression is resulted, which it is visible from, that transversal displacement also depends on speed of ship after a maneuver. It is marked in the publication, that transversal displacement is more complete description of exactness of gyrocompass on the protracted time domains, as it represents the consequences of influencing of maneuvering on a gyrocompass in the «smoothed» kind out. From these positions, obviously, that inertia deviation is the index of instantaneous exactness of gyrocompass. Two methods of decline of transversal displacement of ship are offered, thus for estimation of efficiency of the offered procedure of indemnification of lateral displacement of ship the computer program allowing to produce the calculation of the crooked dependence of total inertia error from time with the subsequent graphic reflection was developed. The program also expects and builds the graphs of dependence of lateral displacement without indemnification, total lateral displacement with partial indemnification and with complete indemnification. The results of computer graphic design are resulted, which it ensues from, that total inertia error and lateral without indemnification is multiplied displacements with growth of breadth, during partial indemnification total lateral displacement diminishes approximately in 5 times, and at the variable additional amendment of course lateral displacement of ship is absent.

The authors investigate the legal regulation of copyright protection in all possible arts: architecture, sculpture, graphics, design, painting, etc. The authors focus on the emergence of copyright in works in new art genres in the digital age, in particular: 3-D digitalmodels; engraving; engraving; pop-up publications and others. Peculiarities of free use of works and creation of derivative works indifferent kinds of art are determined. Each art form needs its own approach to regulating the author’s rights to the work. Architectural objects include both constructionprojects and drawings, as well as the buildings themselves, garden and park formations. The architectural design and the building are protected separately from each other. Therefore, there is no possibility to protect thearchitect’s rights to permit or prohibit the implementation of the project in the building and preserve the copyright to the architecturalpart of the building value, because in this case the idea (construction project) and building – various forms of works’ expression. However, construction projects are not subject to patent law, can not be patented as an invention, utility model, and do not belong to indust -rial designs. The building as a whole is not the subject of copyright, as copyright protects only the shape of the building, not engineeringsolutions, which in themselves, separately from the building, can be patented as inventions or utility models.Plagiarism of sculptures, especially sculptures of famous people and characters, is difficult to prove. In addition, there is the questionof the need to obtain permission from living famous people to create such sculptures for their commercial use. There is a questionof recognizing or not recognizing the 3-D sculpture as the original object of copyright.Works of fine art can be divided into: architecture, painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied arts, photography anddesign. Works created with the help of a print as a unique type of graphic technique are considered original, as well as film photographs, when each developed photo will be original. Each copy of a book created using the pop-up technique is also considered original. The plots of films are difficult to defend in the context of copyright, because, in fact, they are a concept or idea that is easy tochange. The legislation does not clearly define that such a modification will be considered a derivative of the original work. The legislationdoes not contain clear criteria for defining plagiarism in works of art. Also, the legislation does not regulate co-authorship withmore or less complicity.

Abstract:
Reflection of the events of the October Revolution of 1917 in the domestic publications for children in the 1920-ies — early 1930-ies is a very significant and interesting, but insufficiently studied topic. This theme had been mainly explored from the standpoint of literary analysis, without considering peculiarities of the crucial component of the books graphics. In the article there is made an attempt to analyse mainly from the bibliological and art critical point of view a number of editions, directly or indirectly related to the theme of Revolution, to consider stylistic features of their external design, to identify the most typical art techniques used by illustrators of those years. The considered period is interesting because there were no ready-made models to emulate for the writers and artists, there were no rigid canons of the “Revolutionary children book”; the most important topic from the point of view of Soviet ideology had been mastered by trial-and-error method. In the mid-1920-ies, writers and graphic artists preferred the allegorical, fairy-tale interpretations of the Revolution theme: in the illustrative cycles of such different masters, as M.V. Dobuzhinsky, B.V. Joganson, D.A. Bulanov, V.S. Tvardovsky, the victorious revolts were committed in a fantastic country, in the kingdom of toys or in the world of animals. Rather unsuccessful should be recognized the experience of graphical interpretation of revolutionary themes with the use of heavy-weight allegories; much more convincing, though not undisputed, was the method of describing the class battles from the point of view of a child. In publications of the early 1930-ies, all sorts of allegory give way to the direct access to the historical events of 1917; however, the graphical language of the books remains conditional. In the works of A.I. Poret, P.M. Kondratyev, B.I. Inozemtsev, N.V. Svinenko, the epic scale of the Revolution is emphasized with the use of unexpected lines of sight, bold spatial solutions; and primitive style is often synthesized with the techniques of avant-garde art. Using different strategies of mythologization and poetization of the Revolution, illustrators were successfully resolving the problem of not only political, but also aesthetic education of the younger generation.

Abstract:
The protection of printed documents plays an important role in the information security of the state. The problems of the development of graphic methods of document protection are analysed. The analysis showed that there is a certain gap in document protection and the control of originality, and also the need for effective protection of documents to prevent their falsification. The possibility to improve the protection result by using latency for the effectiveness of document security is considered. This method allows providing a high level security of information in printed form, leaving no room for possible falsifications even on modern copier devices. The technology of protection involves the creation of protective elements based on the release of latency when attempting to falsify documents. Information technology is developed at the stage of document preparation for printing. The method of protecting printed documents, showing which latent images remain promising in protection, is analysed. The main threats for printed and electronic publications and types of falsifications are determined. The basic principles of protection have been constructed, which ensure the reliability and integrity of the document containing a hidden element. The research of scanned images has revealed that the original document does not match its copy. The article describes the method of identifying means of their unique features. The methods of selecting multiple image keys are explored and they are compared with the corresponding keys of the reference images. The method can be applied in various ways, for example, to recognize graphic elements. The advantages of this method are simplicity of circuit design, increased speed, and accuracy of identification. The results of application of the elemental comparison method for recognition of latent images are proved, which confirms its efficiency. For the protection of documents, a fairly wide range of defence methods is used, each of which is characterized by a certain degree of reliability and has its own specificity, which consists in determining the assessment of threats to the documents, the conditions of their circulation and application. Moreover, it should be noted that any protection will only be effective if it is constantly improved and outpaces the technical and financial capabilities of the initiators of attacks.

Abstract:
Purpose Family holiday decision-making (FHDM) is a process composed of several stages. This paper aims to describe two objectives: to identify at each stage the roles in couples, the main decision-maker in the case of family holidays; and to determine the most influential variables. Design/methodology/approach To identify the roles played by the partners, a frequency analysis has been conducted, which provides a graphic representation of the so-called feasibility triangles. The technique selected to identify the variables that explained the decision structure was binary logistic regression. In total, 375 useful dyads of questionnaires were received. Findings Holidays follow a joint decision-making process in the initiation phase and in the final decision, while the search for information is carried out equally by either partner. The woman’s work situation, the type of destination travelled to and the difference in education levels between them are the variables that best explain how couples decide on their family holidays. Practical implications A better understanding of the FHDM process will help tourism companies to improve their marketing campaigns. Originality/value The characteristics of the sample composed of 375 couples whose members completed a questionnaire separately have allowed not have to rely on one response per household, which adds reliability to the results. This sample is higher than the one of many reference publications on the subject. Furthermore, this paper revealed differences between male and female perception.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article is devoted to the identification of manipulative headlines in the media space of Ukrainian-language online publications in 2020 and the analysis of manipulative technologies applied to them. The purpose of the article is to identify manipulative technologies applied to headlines in the modern Ukrainian-language media space.Methods. To achieve this goal, the paper uses appropriate research methods: the method of continuous sampling for the selection of manipulative media headlines that occur in online publications; method of content analysis to study the implicative content of manipulative titles of publications of Ukrainian online publications in 2020. Results. The title in the online edition is a communicative unit that performs a number of functions: nominative-informational, advertising-expressive, graphic-distinctive.Manipulative technologies used by journalists and editors for verbal design of headlines of materials published in online publications are analyzed. Among them – the use of stereotypes, labeling, repetition of information, anonymous authority, statement of fact, distraction, the principle of contrast, psychological shock.Conclusions. As a result of the content analysis, which was to identify the implicative content of manipulative titles of Ukrainian online publications in 2020, the authors of this investigation found that journalists and editors productively use manipulative technologies that increase clickability and, consequently, bring profit to owners media. But there is a trend: the more actively mass media use these technologies, i.e. the clickability increases, the lower the quality of information content in the media space. Poor performance of the main function of mass media in society – information – causes a violation of the process of socio-political communication. The analyzed techniques create manipulative content, the purpose of which is to attract the attention of media consumers (the main thing is the advertising-expressive function of headlines), which play an important role in the media space, because they disseminate information on social networks or orally.Key words: manipulation, media manipulation, manipulation technology, content.

Abstract:
The study of the principles of action and technical objects design at high levels of abstraction presents considerable difficulties for engineering students and, as a result, reduces their motivation for learning. Drawings, diagrams, general types of technical objects, that are crucial to gaining understanding of how complex mechanisms operate, can be easily converted into digital format. However, their use to increase the motivation of students for learning is hampered by insufficient theoretical groundwork and limited experience in the introduction of animated graphic materials. The analysis of publications on the subject of the article confirms that the use of information and communication technologies can improve the quality of teaching in higher education institutions, including by enhancing students' motivation for learning. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of animation on the correlation between internal and external motives in the course of educational activity of students majoring in engineering. The article describes the framework developed by the authors for creating animation of a technical object model and its perception by the students in the context of increasing motivation. Three levels of animation (low, medium and high) are classified according to the degree of realism of the designed models of technical objects. The findings reveal that the control of animation at each level of realism makes it possible to transform it into a game situation and enhance the practical skills of managing the object. The authors have carried out a comparative analysis of the influence of animation on the motivation of students of engineering majors. The experimental testing has identified a statistically significant change in the ratio between internal and external motives, determined the level of motives associated with acquiring knowledge and skills, gaining engineering qualifications and formally obtaining a degree after graduating from a higher education institution.

Abstract:
The author uses historiographic analysis, scientologic and bibliological methods to analyse the texts of the leading domestic book scientists of the 1920s, expressed on the art and design of book. The article identifies the range of the most important sources from the point of view of the studied theme. The author traces how the concept of the “art of book” was interpreted by scientists of that period, how it was introduced into science, and what aspects of study of design skills seemed to be the most advanced. Increased interest in the appearance and aesthetic quality of printed publications, which had been observed in the art criticism since the end of the 19th century, moved in the 1920s to the field of academic science. There is a need to concretize the basic concepts of “book art criticism”, specify them in detail in the general system of book science. According to the majority of researchers, the art of book should be understood first of all not as graphic decorations, illustrative additions to the text, but its typographic interpretation, clear coordination of all elements of the book ensemble. This idea was also expressed by the critics of Silver age, but it was the book scientists of the 1920s who especially vigorously promoted it, introduced it into the minds of contemporaries and into scientific circulation, and used it as a methodological basis for their theoretical constructions.M.I. Shchelkunov’s monograph “History, technology, art of book printing” played an important role in the history of “art book science”. It contains a lot of valuable information; however it is largely spoiled by the author’s vulgar-sociological approach to the chosen topic. More successful were the works of A.A. Sidorov “The art of book”, “Book as an object of study and artistic elements of book”, which raised the question of the need to study the forms of book, the laws of its construction, and the ratio of constructive and decorative elements in the design ensemble. The author also considers the statements about the art of book by M.N. Kufaev, A.M. Lovyagin, N.F. Garelin, M.I. Fabrikant, A.G. Fomin, P.M. Dulsky. Attempts by scientists in the 1920s to create a theory of book art, to approach the study of print works from the standpoint of art studies, were not always successful, but nevertheless, they were of great importance for Russian book science, expanded its borders and significantly influenced its further development.

Abstract:
Complying with certain requirements or, more precisely, following the guidelines for the design of a scientific publication helps to make it not only more comprehensible for reviewers and readers, but actually enhances the quality of work. For example, even if some aspects in design logic were fulfilled but not described, other researchers doing meta-analysis may wrongly but for a good reason downgrade such publication and exclude it from the analysis. Understanding of the guidelines for study design ensures not only the proper description of the results but the initial planning of work. The CA RE guidelines were established for reporting of clinical cases, STROBE — for reporting observational studies (cohort and case-control studies), CO NSORT — for reporting randomized studies (these guidelines are often used also for other comparative and case series studies), STARD — for reporting diagnostic studies, and PRISMA — for reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The present paper describes the key aspects of those guidelines and provides templates for graphic display of study design in form of flow charts. Evidently, we should not forget that each study is unique and there is always a place for a reasonable compromise between “requirements” and the real logic of the research in place.

Abstract:
The article presents the history of the Narva Factory-Kitchen construction in the late 1920s - early 1930s. A decision was made on the general construction of factory-kitchens, which were to become the basis of the USSR’s state public catering system in the 1920s-1930s. In Leningrad, it was decided to build four factory-kitchens, including the Narva one, which was supposed to share a building with a department store (later the Kirov Department Store). A competition was announced to design the factory-kitchen building. The article describes the factory-kitchen project that won the competition. Four architects were the authors of the project developed in the constructivism style. Over time, the idea of factory-kitchens turned out to be inconsistent, and the Narva Factory-Kitchen was closed. The Kirov Department Store had also stopped working for a long time. In the early 2000s, a decision was made to reconstruct it. During the preparation of the project for the reconstruction of the Kirov Department Store, research work was carried out to identify design materials and documents on the history of the Narva Factory-Kitchen and Department Store building. In addition to many graphic images, the authors of the article discovered interesting facts about the construction progress and the first years of the factory-kitchen. The found documents: protocols, reports, critical notes, and memoirs of a participant in the events, illuminate the construction and operation of the factory-kitchen from different points of view - from official materials (texts of explanatory notes to project documentation, publications in the official press, minutes of meetings, construction inspection reports) and from personal assessments of various facts related to the Nevsky Factory-Kitchen (memoirs of contemporaries, workers who took part in the construction work and further operation of the enterprise). The documents also made it possible to reproduce the realities of the production process of the 1920s-1930s, for example, socialist competition, high-powered work practices, and shturmovshchina. The fact that construction work was carried out in the absence of actual plans was revealed. Besides, the coordination of work was systematically disrupted. The created picture shows a low work organization level, which caused numerous imperfections and low construction quality. In turn, this was one of the reasons for the problems in the operation of the factory-kitchen. Based on the found documents and the actual violations of an operational nature, the article also notes: non-observance of the sanitary and hygienic regime, the monotonous menu of the dining room, low quality of dishes. The documents also report on economic violations. Later, for several reasons, the very idea of a factory-kitchen discredited itself. At present, the building of the Kirov Department Store has been reconstructed and is in operation.

Abstract:
Background. Within the framework of art-historical discourse, the peculiarities of the influence of design developments and concepts on progress of humanity are considered. Researchers offer ambiguous estimates of this phenomenon, discussions are lasting and different opinions on the issues of influence of design on technological and cultural progress of human society are putting forward. The aim of the paper is to systematize and generalize scientific concepts about the design role in the society progress. Novelty of the research consisting in synthesis of information on features of development of design for the last years in various spheres of culture and social practice defines its practical significance: the Ukrainian educators and art critics can consider the information contained in the article useful to develop new strategy of training in bases of design to non-specialist students. Methodology. Major publications and monographs on the subject have been reviewed. It has been found that terminological judgment of design began with the middle of the XX century, first, within postmodern paradigm. The design as a component of culture correlates with cultural and art traditions, philosophy, ecology and other areas of public and humanitarian knowledge. Hence, the study of the role of design in ensuring progress provides for the wide use of theoretical and methodological tools not only of design theory, but also of other disciplines: art history, cultural studies, social psychology, aesthetics, ecology, etc. The design is considered both as universal and as a national phenomenon. The definitions of design in the works of a number of domestic and foreign authors in the context of its cultural-creative influence are compared. The analysis of design in its connection with artistic creativity is carried out. The components of contemporary design art are determined, the characteristic to the newest manifestations of design is given. Results. The design represents the hierarchical structure expressed by means of а material, space and balance of proportions, contrasts, repetitions (in ornaments, etc.), scale and a form, a size, a color and density, texture and weight, and other. It is possible to consider culture of design as the huge multilayered text, which is written down by different ways in different spheres of culture and art. However the dilemma “art or production” in the sphere of design is inevitable. Design is directly involved in technical progress in material culture and uses the art of planning, invention, modeling as a method, also introducing new object forms (see, for example, Vershinin & Melentyev, 2005: 1001). The design role in culture is connected with creation of esthetically perfect fine environment. At the same time, it is differentiated essentially depending on the region of the world. So, design creativity is reasonably considered a manifestation of project activities and project culture of the 20th century. However, the progressive function of design at the beginning of the 21st century is that design is becoming a way to bridge the gap between technical civilization and spiritual culture, and design projecting is becoming a way of harmonizing human life in a modern environment. The importance of design for the progress of humankind is clearly demonstrated by the modern ecological direction, one of the components of the international movement of “green” design, namely, “environmental” design. This concept implies the creation of products that are compatible with the environment, the reduction and complete elimination of the negative impact on nature through the use of alternative resources and energy, as well as non-toxic materials. Ideally, the design should be in line with the “3R” ecological principle: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The value of design for progress in art can be understood, having only tracked integration of painting, architecture, industrial and graphic design and having seen what the role in tangled process of creation of design is played by contents and a form, which also are the expression of the thought, the point of view and social responsibility of the designers. It is also important to emphasize the role of the designer’s profession, because for many artists design and art is a cultural mission, where life and work are inseparable. Judgments of design in art are formed, proceeding from two types of estimates: symbolical, or associative (external), and formal (internal). Symbolical estimates are mostly subjective and have no relation to design or art per se, being most often based on a habit, rumors, others thought, personal factors, prejudices, misunderstanding, that is on social, psychological, political, financial and even religious factors. Internal assessments concern an esthetics and actually design (appearance of the work of art, its visual quality) regardless of what it personifies. If external estimates belong to contents, then internal – to beauty. The latter is difficult to measure it and here such factors as talent, erudition, taste, susceptibility, experience and visual feeling matter. When determining a role of design in art, it is also necessary to remember that the principles of laconicism, laws of color, a rhythm and even plot equally work in any material, these fundamentals exist out of time, space, the state, school or style. To resume, human progress is largely driven by the positive influences of design concepts. Summarizing the views of Ukrainian and foreign researchers, it can be argued that design as a type of purposeful creative activity of mankind contributes to progress, since: 1) provides support for the development of civilization by creating new and improving known man-made objects; 2) creates an optimal human environment in order to achieve maximum comfort of his existence; 3) contributes to the formation of creative personality traits, its purposeful activity, which is one of the main social tasks. Design acts as an universal phenomenon, which covers different spheres of human activity, being, at the same time, the factor of socio-cultural communication and the basis for personality realization. As the socio-cultural phenomenon, it correlates with understanding of the person as source of intrinsic forces acting like the harmony catalyst in space.

Abstract:
Research is of little use if its results are not effectively communicated. Data visualised in tables (and graphs) are key components in any scientific report, but their design leaves much to be desired. This article focuses on table design, following two general principles: clear vision and clear understanding. Clear vision is achieved by maximising the signal to noise ratio. In a table, the signal is the data in the form of numbers, and the noise is the support structure necessary to interpret the numbers. Clear understanding is achieved when the story in the data is told effectively, through organisation of the data and use of text. These principles are illustrated by original and improved tables from recent publications. Two special cases are discussed separately: tables produced by the pharmaceutical industry (in clinical study reports and reports to data safety monitoring boards), and study flow diagrams as proposed by the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses initiatives.

Abstract:
In comparison with architectural books, books on design have a relatively recent history, although not as recent as might be thought since many of today’s design books had antecedents in the 1930s. The publishing of design books in the 1930s followed the emergence of design as a profession; the rapid expansion of design publishing in the last two decades has been stimulated by the design boom of the 1980s, by the rise of design history as an academic discipline, and by new varieties of and issues in design such as computer graphics, design education, and “green” design. Publications from this period include some major new bibliographies and reference works, but also a good deal of transient material which will nonetheless possess some documentary or curiosity value in time to come. Writings about design by designers themselves are still in short supply.

Abstract:
A day of studies held at the Politecnico in Milan dedicated to Ico Parisi has re-launched the project for publication of a monographic volume dedicated to the multi-faceted work of the this architect from Como. This project offers the opportunity to reconsider the role of photography in Parisi's designs, where a snapshot was never a detailed, truthful, immutable reproduction of reality, but a symbolic and critical representation of the subject mediated by the author, a source of creative inspiration, more images and the concretisation of utopian places. Following the evolution of Parisi's poetics through his experiences in the photographic field, this essay shows the development of the relationship between graphic representation and architectural design, which became progressively closer until the two expressive realms almost completely overlapped, and photography itself became architecture.

Abstract:
Background: We live in a time where traditional education has rapidly incorporated online modalities due to the recent SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) safety measures such as social distancing. Regardless of these challenges, health education constantly strives to implement the best technologies available for an effective student deep learning outcome. Virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the dental pre-clinical stage may help stimulate students to better understand the foundation material prescribed in the curriculum. Most visual material available for students is still mainly based on 2D graphics. Thus, this study will attempt to evaluate the students' perceptions about implementing VR/AR technologies in the learning setting. Methods: A single-group pretest-posttest design will be implemented where students will be exposed to VR/AR and fill out two questionnaires, one before and one after the exposure. Conclusions: This project is intended to start once the institutional ethical approval is obtained. It is expected that the analysis from the current project will provide recommendations to improve the students' academic curriculum pre-clinical experience. The recommendations will be provided in the form of at least three scientific publications, with one publication for each subject area intended to be evaluated (i.e., head and neck anatomy, dental anatomy, and removable prosthodontics).

Abstract:
Civil aviation is developing rapidly, and the number of domestic and international operations is increasing exponentially every year than the previous one. Airline companies with increased air traffic and the number of passengers increase the demand of new aircrafts. An aircraft needs not only fuel but also pilot and aeronautical information (charts, digital navigation information, flight plan, and etc.) to perform flight operation. One of the most important components in aeronautical information is the terminal chart. Authorized institution in every state is responsible to publish their terminal charts for certain periods. Although these charts are produced in accordance with ICAO’s Annex 4 and Annex 15, cartographic representation and page layout differs in each state’s publication. This situation makes difficult to read them by pilots. In this paper, standard instrument departure (SID) charts are analysed to produce by use of cutting-edge and competitive technologies instead of classical computer-aided drawing and vector based graphic applications that are currently used by main chart producers. The goal is to design efficient and commercial chart management system that is able to produce aeronautical charts with same cartographic representation for all states.
