Abstract:
Abstract Print advertisements, a denominator of social realities have been approached from varied linguistic orientations. Studies that have dealt with how religious groups and churches utilize print advertisement to elicit patronage are discovered as inadequate. Anchored on the principles of linguistic stylistics, this study therefore investigates some religious advertisements with a view to determining how meaning is stylistically indexed in religious discourse at the graphological level. Qualitative research method with the analysis of corpus of selected texts was adopted at the graphological level of stylistics. Data for the study consisted of a total of thirteen (13) religious advertisements which are purposively sampled from selected church handbills, posters and flyers. The language of religious advertisement indicates how people’s linguistic choices are influenced by their religious persuasions and beliefs. The advertisers employ diverse linguistic features such as pictorial elements, graphological devices of italicization, icons, capitalization, punctuation marks and figures. The choice of the words is very simple, and there are elements of code – mixing. Also, a lot of images common to the Christendom are used such as the sign of the cross and the pictures of dove, clock and cup of wine, as an indication that the adverts are meant for Christians. The study provokes a deep understanding of how language gives expression to religious discourse. The advertisers’ understanding of the people of the religious inclination inform their choice of language and semiotic features.

Abstract:
Factuality remains the highest virtue of a legal text. The paper finds how this virtue is jeopardized by the presence of logical fallacies. The stylistics analysis is performed for identification of linguistic features of logical fallacies in legal language. Two randomly selected verdicts of the Supreme Court of Pakistan are selected for analysis. Analysis of verdicts reveals that factuality is compromised by fallacies with distinctive stylistic features. These features include the fallacies of relevance, defective induction and ambiguity. Lexical choices, syntactically complicated structure and graphological markers of style contribute to the formation of these fallacies. The findings establish that stylistic aspect themselves contribute to the projection of fallacies in verdicts, therefore, the study recommends avoiding stylistic formulae of the legalese or legal registers which lead to the formation of logical fallacies in the legal language.

Abstract:
Literature conveys human ideas, thoughts, emotions, feelings and experiences artistically. The use of distinctive grammatical, semantic, and stylistic conventions make the language of literature a field-based register. Based on these presumptions, this article aims to elucidate the deviant features that are prevalent in the literary texts. To obtain the objective, I have employed qualitative content analysis that calls for interpreting the extracts from the authentic literary discourses. The main findings are related to the five-fold features such as grammatical, semantic/lexical, graphological, prosodic, and ornamental, which create markedness of the literary register. These findings reveal that the litterateurs use figures of speech to beautify the presentation of feelings and ideas. This implies that the readers, the writers, and the material producers (like curriculum designers and textbook writers) should be aware of the marked features of the literary texts.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective: To review the role of handwriting analysis in psychiatry.Method: Case-report and review of key papers. Results: M, a 27-year-old man, presented with incoherent speech, palilalia, logoclonia, incongruous affect, paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations. M was diagnosed with schizophrenia and cannabis misuse, complicated by speech and language difficulties. M spent long periods writing on pieces of paper; towards the start of his admission, his writing was unintelligible but became more intelligible as his psychosis resolved. M's handwriting demonstrates clinical features of psychosis (e.g. clang associations) and graphological abnormalities associated with schizophrenia in the literature (rigidity in letter-formation, mechanical expressions, and tendency toward over-use of straight lines). Conclusion: Analysis of handwriting is likely to play a limited role in psychiatric diagnosis but may prove useful in monitoring clinical improvement in certain patients.

Abstract:
This study stylistically analyzes a poem, "The Innocent Killings", by an anonymous poet, Jasmine. The poem has been analyzed at morphological, lexico-syntactical, and graphological levels where thematic and foregrounding elements have been used. Moreover, the unique deviation and parallelism have been taken as a suggestion to the spirit of the age. Various stylistic features in the context of brutal terrorism have been employed in the poem to convey the denser ideas and traumatic sufferings of the nation. The researchers also explored the unique structure of the poem carrying different moods and troops with proper choice of dictions in each portion. The stylistic techniques in the poem move parallel to the tone of the mood, such as; the use of progressive verbs, abstract nouns, symbol device like "Jasmine", and lack of the main verb in the last three lines of the poem shows a failure to defend the nation from terrorist attacks

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to shed light on linguistic deviation in literary style. Literary language, with its three main genres; poetry, drama and prose, is a situational variety of English that has specific features which belong to the literary and elevated language of the past. Literary language has been assigned a special status since antiquity, and is still used nowadays by some speakers and writers in certain situations and contexts. It has been considered as sublime and distinctive from all other types of language; one which is deviant from ordinary use of language in that it breaks the common norms or standards of language. A basic characteristic of literary style is linguistic deviation which occurs at different levels; lexical, semantic, syntactic, phonological, morphological, graphological, historical, dialectal and register. All these types of deviations are thoroughly investigated and stylistically analyzed in this paper so as to acquaint readers, students of English, researchers, and those interested in the field, with this type of linguistic phenomenon whose data is based on selected samples from major classical works in English literature

Abstract The paper seeks to ascertain through the linguistic approach whether Wole Soyinka's The Trials of Brother Jero is actually, as propagated in some quarters, a focus on the problem of communication. Analysis is carried out on the lexico-semantic and morpho-syntactic features of the text, and in the process other linguistic flourishes typical of Soyinka are highlighted. These include especially features of graphetic and graphological importance. The study shows that Soyinka is a playwright with a penchant for linguistic communication. His dramatic raison d'être is to reach his Nigerian audience as stylistically as possible.

Downes, Paul. "Developing Derrida's Psychoanalytic Graphology: Diametric and Concentric Spatial Movements." Derrida Today 6, no. 2 (November 2013): 197–221. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/drt.2013.0064.

Full text
Abstract:
Derrida's work encompasses dynamic spatial dimensions to understanding as a pervasive theme, including the search for a ‘new psychoanalytic graphology’ in Writing and Difference. This preoccupation with a spatial text for repression also occurs later in Archive Fever. Building on Derrida, this paper seeks to develop key aspects of a new dynamic psychoanalytic graphology through diametric and concentric interactive spatial relation. These spatial movements emerge from a radical reconstruction of a neglected aspect of structural anthropologist Lévi-Strauss’ work on spatial relations prior to myth. This psychoanalytic graphology is argued to silently pervade Freud's own direct accounts of repression. This graphological domain is developed through diametric and concentric spatial movements across common concerns of Derrida and Freud such as inversions, interruption and restoration, regarding traces in the unconscious. A spatial text is uncovered for diverse features of Freudian repression, including ambivalence in obsessional neurosis and psychosis, splitting of the ego and repetition compulsion. This psychoanalytic graphology challenges the construction of a restricted subjectivity based on repressive diametric spatial relations. It goes beyond Freud's logocentric repression, resonant with Derrida's more radical call for a wider spatio-temporal understanding of structures of differential relation, prior to causality and myth.

Abstract:
Stylistics as a scientific discipline helps to interpret literary text logically based on linguistic evidence. This study aims at exploring the stylistic features of Tabish Khair’s poem, Immigrant. The poem has been analyzed on different levels of stylistics: graphological, phonological, morphological, syntactical, pragmatics, and discourse. The connotative and denotative meanings of the poem have been explored to get a complete understanding of the poem. The stylistic analysis of the poem reflects the main idea of the poem that is the quest of the poet for his homeland and his lost identity. The choice of the words by the poet has played a very important role in underlying major or minor themes of the poem. It is interesting to mention that he has not used the word Immigrant even once, yet the use of words is quite apt to convey the central idea. The poem is not monotonous or tedious. The poem is relatable to anyone experiencing the same phase of life or state of mind. The theme has been conveyed artistically by using different stylistic devices. This study is also the manifestation of the unique style and structure of Khair’s poetry.

Abstract:
Abstract Humour relies on dominant cultural values and outlooks in its environment in enacting its comic content. However, since humour sometimes encompasses global experiences, it often transcends artificial human barriers. Its transcendence has been facilitated through online digitized content, in the present case—Internet memes. In exploring transnationalization, fifty purposively selected memes are culled from the Facebook group Robert Mugabe Quotes and subjected to critical linguistic analysis. In the evaluation of the data which is achieved through the linguistic examination of cross-cultural themes in the formulation of identity, didactics, and ideology, sixteen memes, representative of the overarching tripartite concerns, are used as exemplifications. Reliant on the bipartite postulations of Critical Linguistic Stylistics—a linguistic theory that examines the style and peculiarities of linguistic data—and Relief Theory of Humour—which considers humour as a platform for the assuagement of tension and emotions, the memes are testamental of prevailing concerns— politics, technology, social/international relations, sex, male–female relations, etc.—in the human society at large. Linguistic markers such as oppositional expressions, capitalization, and other graphological features are annexed in meaning-formation. I conclude that although humour is generally regarded as a light-hearted routine geared towards the provision of momentary relief, a close scrutiny reveals that deep messages targeted at stimulating consciousness and social transformation find provenance in these artefacts.

Abstract:
If a specimen of literary art is seen as a fine tapestry of words made by the skilled seamstress—the poet, then the lexis and structure of a language are the raw materials—the fabric and the thread—by weaving which into specific patterns the finished product is achieved. The choice of materials and their arrangement into unique patterns always bear an image of their creator, or the artist; thus, a close view of them reveals the artist’s identity and brings out the meaningful message that underlies the ornate running threads. Mostly, the students of literary studies cannot appreciate the beauty of the literary classics on their own. Consequently, they simply mimic the ideas, and sometimes even the words, of famous professional critics when asked to give their own critical judgment on the aesthetic merit or the thematic quality of a literary work in the shape of a home assignment, classroom presentation or an annual assessment test. Now, the researcher has got the inspiration for carrying out this study from an idea expounded in Widdowson (1975) that this mimicry can be replaced by genuine individual opinion if the students, or even those people who have non-academic concerns with literature, are brought to a standpoint from where they can have a closer view of the raw materials, the language resources, which are involved in the making of a literary product. And, if the product in its finished form cannot elicit a desired response from them then making them sensitive to the process of its making can be quite effective in this regard. Through the present study, an attempt has been made to show an easy access to the outlandish world of verse by means of the linguistic route which is laid with the familiar flagstones of grammar and vocabulary. Meaning thereby that in this study the elusiveness of poetry will be dealt with the precision of a social scientist, the linguist. The approach which serves as the basis of this study is not an invention of the researcher; rather, it is a well-known twentieth century approach known as stylistics (Jeffries & McIntyre, 2010, p. 30). Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous ballad, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, being a widely read poem and bearing various stylistics features, offered itself as an ideal object for this study. The poet’s aesthetic message is explored by analyzing the finest details of his linguistic expression. And, careful considerations have been made throughout the study to prevent the overlooking of any instance of deviant linguistic units or recurring patterns for interpretation because such elements contribute largely to the meaning of any literary product. The study is descriptive in its nature therefore qualitative data has been integrated with and substantiated by the quantitative one. Abstract:
As a symbolic feature of the language forms of literature, foregrounding is closely connected with the theme and aesthetic value of literary works. Through an analysis of some classics by Jiangxi native literati in Song Dynasty, the thesis focuses on the significance of foregrounding theory to literary translation or even to general translation. With a case study of the classics from four aspects of foregrounding theory, namely, phonological deviation, lexical deviation, semantic deviation and graphological deviation, the research would illustrate foregrounding language in literature and its applicability to classics translation in detail.

Abstract:
Introduction. The research paper contains a critical analysis of the graphological approach to the study of handwritten texts. The problem statement is justified by a special way of the formation of domestic psychology, which has been isolated for a long time from world tendencies. Although the study of manuscripts is not a widespread practice, graphological analysis is recognized at the highest academic level, including in the field of legal proceedings. The aim of the study is to test empirically the diagnostic potential of handwriting as a product of linguistic activity of an individual. Research Procedure. The object of empirical testing is the left-hand slopе as a deviation from the usual way of writing. The data on variability of the variable in the sample of 119 students were collected; three study groups were selected on the basis of clusterization: with left-handed, direct-handed and right-handed writing. Results. The interpretations of the left-hand slope in graphology manuals are studied, and the lack of the evolution is shown. It was find out that the descriptions are philosophizing around previously published texts with the addition of details, author’s own associations; herewith the characteristics of the handwriting are anthropomorphized and directly transferred to the characteristics of personality. A questionnaire has been developed to verify the effect of personal validation. With regard to 40% of the statements of the questionnaire, all respondents expressed a positive opinion; these formulations do not differentiate the respondents and do not have any diagnostic value. None of the graphological interpretations of the left-hand slope was really more expressive in the left-handwriting group. According to the indicators of K. Riff’s Scale of Psychological Well-being, two cases of statistically significant difference between groups with different handwriting were found: the scales of “Environmental management” and “Balance of affect”. The obtained results lead to the idea that handwriting concentrates, to a certain extent, personal characteristics of the author and is an informative psychological feature – but this interpretation must be confirmed by the data of the psycholinguistic method. In general, the research paper demonstrates that handwriting can be the subject of scientific research, to which methodological procedures recognized in modern psychology are applied.

Handwriting of each person is unique since each person has their own unique and different style of handwriting. Handwriting verification can be performed in two ways, dynamic and static. The dynamic verification process is the writer dependent whereas the static verification process is the writer independent procedure. The features can be spatial, structural, statistical, geometrical, graphological, and from other feature extraction techniques. In this work, we are considering the combination of multilevel feature set for writer recognition and identification purpose. A dataset of different handwriting samples collected from 100 different writers is used for this experiment. A decision tree classifier with random forest implementation is used for recognition and identification of writer with 98.2% accuracy.

Ontology of knowledge of atopic dermatitis allows structure information of diagnosis and treatment of this disease in children and can recommend a number of amendments to the existing “Protocol of diagnosis and treatment of children with atopic dermatitis”. When we built the graphological schemes we revealed differences concerning additional criteria of diagnostic of atopic dermatitis in children. So, in protocol important signs are absent, as it seems to us. These include, first of all: keratoconus, front subcapsular cataracts, peeling on the face and extremities (Pityriasis alba), erythroderma, cracks behind the ears.</p><p>These features are extremely important in the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis in children.
