Abstract In recent decades, green tramway tracks have still more often been installed in many cities as an alternative to standard rails placed on concrete sleepers or grooved rails since the vegetated tracks are beneficial to urban dwellers. In this article, we summarize and compare the benefits of grass and low-maintenance tramway tracks and link them with their investment and maintenance costs in two Czech cities. We conclude that grass surfaces offer a slightly higher rainwater retention capacity, while the rest of the benefits are similar for grass and low-maintenance surfaces. The invest

Due to these potential benefits, the aerospace community has investigated a number of approaches for monitoring GW. Heretofore, each approach has had inherent strengths and weaknesses that make them incomplete solutions by themselves for rotorcraft. For this reason, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation has developed and demonstrated a novel system referenced herein as Hybrid GW Monitoring, which leverages the strengths of several approaches while significantly mitigating

Abstract Corrosion is a major problem in the oil & gas industry. A huge expenditure is spent every year on corrosion damages. Based on international studies, the cost of corrosion ranges from 4 – 6% of the gross national product of some countries. Several corrosion control techniques are used to maintain the integrity of equipment. Corrosion control techniques either increase the corrosion resistance of materials or reduce the corrosivity of the environment. Selection of a suitable corrosion control method requires technical and economical evaluation of the applicable options in order to h

Transport Category Certification requires the ability to safely land or continue flight after an engine failure during all phases of flight. The maximum transport category gross weight is a key parameter that can strongly influence the success of an aircraft. Due to its unique configuration, the tiltrotor offers unique challenges and abilities for surviving an engine failure during its critical mission phase. Challenges include energy management and thrust maintenance for a low inertia, high disk-loading rotor. Unique capabilities include rapid acceleration due to tilting of the thrust vector

Abstract The Total Quality Management (TQM) process is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the construction and maintenance business today. It is actually a very simple thing, a process of continuous improvement at everything a company does. Since we know that a process is an ongoing thing that really never ends, it must be understood that the Total Quality process is a journey not a destination. To incorporate the Total Quality process onto the jobsite, contractors and owners must realize that you cannot have a Quality Project without the successful ingredients of quality, productivity

The bridge is a 3-span continuous bridge with span lengths of 30+60+30 m, making it a suboptimal bridge for accurate weight estimation via BWIM. On the other hand, the bridge has only one lane and has been instrumented with a total of 13 strain gauges along the central span. Because of the vertical geometry of t

Abstract Acrylic urethanes have set a standard for high performance topcoats by virtue of their long lasting resistance and appearance properties. Such a high level of performance has made acrylic urethanes attractive to an ever increasing share of various coatings markets, including maintenance coatings. Naturally, this technology is not without its shortcomings, not the least of which are the health concerns associated with the isocyanate resins (HDI prepolymers) used in these coatings. These urethane paint vapors and mists can irritate the respiratory tract and repeated overexposure can lea

From 2004-2015, the utilised agricultural area (UAA) in Estonia increased by 25%. Half of the UAA growth arose from the increase in the area of permanent grassland temporarily not used for production purposes. The main driver of growth in such land has been single area payment (SAP) paid in Estonia since the EU accession in 2004. While subsidising the maintenance of permanent grassland not used for agricultural production is in line with the objectives of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), it fuels discussions about the effects of this policy on agricultural producers. Abstract:
Jubata grass--one of Point Reyes National Seashore?s highest-priority invasive species--threatens important habitat in designated wilderness. Natural Resource funding ($210,000) was obtained to eradicate small infestations and bring 3,025 acres to maintenance level. Work was conducted 2016-2019 in the central wilderness, source of the highest jubata grass concentration. We treated 278 patches (7.8 gross and 3.0 net infested acres), 13% (37 patches) twice, across 3,300 landscape acres. About 17% were initially treated chemically; 83% were manually removed. Due to increased costs, jubata grass s

Although there are many studies on plant growth promotion carried out using bacteria on various crops, there is scarce information on the effects of PGPR on the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cultivated in Colombian high tropics. Ryegrass is one of the most widely cultivated grass in Colombia, and it used as a nutritional source for livestock in intensive dual purpose, milk and meat production systems [1]. Several factors affect pasture degradation, including the following: (i) low planting density before grass initiated, (ii) forage species unsuitable for local conditions, and

Twenty important management areas (wetlands of management concern) and reference wetlands compose the sentinel wetlands at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Heat production (HP) or energy expenditure for activity (EEa) is of fundamental nutritional importance for livestock because it determines the proportion of ingested nutrients available for productive functions. Previous estimates of EEa are unreliable and vary widely with different indirect methodologies. This leads to erroneous nutritional strategies, especially when intake on pasture does not meet nutritional requirements and supplementation is necessary for acceptable production. Therefore, the objective of this project was to measure EEa in different classes of livestock (beef cattle and
