Abstract:
Abandoned semi-natural limestone grasslands are often overgrown by shrubs and trees. Little is know if and to what extant xerothermic limestone grasslands can be restored by tree cutting. This was tested in a 12-year experiment after the clearing of a 35-year-old secondary pine wood developed on unmanaged grassland in the close proximity of not overgrown old grassland. After 12 years, there were no significant differences in the number of field layer species on the plots in the old and restored grasslands. But over this period the number of meadow species increased in all sites, while the numb

Observed for the first time in south-eastern Romania by Ramme in 1951 and described as a new subspecies from Cogealac (Constanţa County), Asiotmethis limbatus motasi (Ramme, 1951) is endemic for the Romanian territory, being known only from central and southern Dobrogea. The species was discovered in the field by its calling song and body color, two major elements in identifying this very mobile insect. There are three major NATURA 2000 types of habitat where these taxa have been identified: Subpannonic steppe grasslands described as xerophilous feathergrass steppe grasslands, dry grasslands d

Abstract. Ecosystems limited in phosphorous (P) are widespread, yet there is limited understanding of how these ecosystems may respond to anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen (N) and the interconnected effects on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon (C), N, and P. Here, we investigate the consequences of enhanced N addition for the C–N–P pools of two P-limited grasslands, one acidic and one limestone, occurring on contrasting soils, and we explore their responses to a long-term nutrient-manipulation experiment. We do this by combining data with an integrated C–N–P cycling model (N14CP). We exp

Abstract Elevated CO2 (eCO2) can stimulate plant productivity and increase carbon (C) input to soils, but nutrient limitation restricts productivity. Despite phosphorus (P)-limited ecosystems increasing globally, it is unknown how nutrient cycling, particularly soil microbial extra cellular enzyme activity (EEA), will respond to eCO2 in such ecosystems. Long-term nutrient manipulation plots from adjacent P-limited acidic and limestone grasslands were exposed to eCO2 (600 ppm) provided by a mini-Free Air CO2 Enrichment system. P-limitation was alleviated (35 kg-P ha−1 y−1 (P35)), exacerbated (3

Molybdenum (Mo) is required by the enzymes involved in many metabolic processes related to plant growth and development. However, the effects of Mo addition on plant growth and beneficial microorganisms in mixed grasslands are unclear. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to examine the effects of different Mo addition levels (10 and 20 mg Mo kg−1 soil in the form of Na2MoO4) on the growth of perennial ryegrass–white clover in two low-Mo soils, as well as their symbiotic microorganisms. Our results showed that the addition of Mo had a significant impact on plant growth in limestone soil but no

Recent evidence indicates that grassland community structure and species diversity are influenced by genetic variation within species. We review what is known regarding the impact of intraspecific diversity on grassland community structure, using an ancient limestone pasture as a focal example. Two genotype-dependent effects appear to modify community structure in this system. First, the abundance of individual constituent species can depend upon the combined influence of direct genetic effects stemming from individuals within the population. Second, the outcome of localized interspecific inte

Abstract Konza Prairie lies in the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas, a region of stream-dissected hills eroded from flat-lying to gently dipping, chert-bearing limestones and shales of Permian age. Konza Prairie is part of an erosional landscape produced during millions of years of exposure to weathering and to stripping by streams tributary to the Kansas River. The major drainage basins on Konza are Kings Creek, Shane Creek, Pressee Branch, Swede Creek (tributaries of McDowell Creek), and Deep Creek (Fig. 3.1). Also prominent is the bench and slope topography in the uplands created by the erosio
