Full text
Abstract:
Microalloyed pipeline and structural steels are currently graded according to their yield strength. In this work, different microstructural factors that affect the yield strength of the steels are assessed and their contributions to the strength are estimated for several low-carbon microalloyed steels, used in pipeline or structural applications. Emphasis is placed on the relative contribution of grain/sub-grain size, precipitate distribution and dislocation density. Accurate grain/sub-grain size measurements were only possible through electron microscopy imaging. It was found that the increased strength is mainly due to the formation of bainitic structures with fine grain/sub-grain sizes. The contribution from other strengthening sources such as precipitates, dislocations and atoms in solid solution is limited and does not vary much among the several grades examined here. The variation in hardness among the fine-grained heat-affected zone samples (heat input range 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm) of one of the steels was also explained based on the microstructural changes.

Full text
Abstract:
Creep rupture strength and ductility of Creep Strength Enhanced Ferritic steels of Grades 23, 91, 92 and 122 was investigated with particular emphasis on remarkable drop in the long-term. Large difference in creep rupture strength and ductility was observed on three heats of Grade 23 steels. Remarkable drop of creep rupture strength in the long-term of T91 was comparable to those of Grades 92 and 122. Remarkable drop in creep rupture ductility in a stress regime below 50% of 0.2% offset yield stress was observed on Grade T23 steel, however, that of Grade P23 steel did not indicate any degradation of creep rupture ductility. Higher creep rupture ductility of Grade P23 steel was considered to be caused by its lower creep strength than that of T23 steels. Creep rupture ductility of Grades 92 and 122 steels indicated rapid and drastic decrease with decrease in stress at 50% of 0.2% offset yield stress. Stress dependence of creep rupture ductility of Grades 92 and 122 steels was well described by a ratio of stress to 0.2% offset yield stress, regardless of temperature. On the other hand, large drop in creep rupture ductility of Grade 91 steel was observed only in the very low stress regime at 650°C. Alloying elements including impurities and changes in precipitates may influence on creep rupture ductility, however, remarkable drop in ductility of the steels cannot be explained by chemical composition and precipitates. High ductility in the high stress regime above 50% of 0.2% offset yield stress should be provided by easy plastic deformation, and it has been concluded that a remarkable drop in ductility in the low stress regime is derived from a concentration of creep deformation into a tiny recovered region formed at the vicinity of grain boundary.

Schrock, David, Xin Wang, and Patrick Kwon. "An Analysis of the Wear of Tungsten Carbide and Polycrystalline Diamond Inserts Turning Ti-6Al-4V." In ASME 2011 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2011-50175.

Full text
Abstract:
Dry turning experiments on Ti-6Al-4V were conducted using two grades (finer and coarser) of carbides and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) inserts to study tool wear. Despite of minor compositional difference between two carbide grades, both grades contain 6% Co. Crater wear and flank wear were measured using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Three dimensional rake surface topographies were reconstructed from the CLSM data and wear profiles were extracted. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted to study the effects of cutting conditions and thermal properties on rake face temperature. Flank wear on the carbide tools indicated that the inserts with the finer grain size exhibited smaller flank wear than the insert of the coarser grain size. This was attributed to reduced abrasive wear in the finer grained inserts as a result of a higher hardness. The carbide grade with a coarser grain size had an enhanced ability to resist crater wear, likely from lower rake face temperatures and the differences in the compositions. It is known that coarser grain carbides have a higher thermal conductivity resulting from increased grain contiguity. FEA was used to study the temperature difference between the two grain-sizes and the effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradients. Tool wear of the PCD inserts was also studied. The PCD tools showed significant adhesive wear at the 200sfm cutting speed, transitioning to crater wear at 400sfm. With a high thermal conductivity, it is possible that rake face temperatures were low enough to alter the wear mechanism. FEA supports this hypothesis, as the maximum rake face temperature for the PCD inserts were only around 900°C at 200sfm.

Abstract:
Engineers have employed various ways to protect drain openings from the entry of sediment with varying degrees of success. This study aims to compare and evaluate the hydraulic performance and efficiency of using natural graded gravel filter and crushed gravel filter in drainage systems. An aquifer tank (sand tank) 70 cm long, 50 cm wide and 80 cm high, a perforated drain pipe of 50 mm diameter was used in the laboratory work. The laboratory study was performed with two types of soil: loam and loamy sand. These two soils were used with the two types of gravel filters after taking the particle size distribution test for the two soils. For each case, the inflow was applied to the model from the soil surface (to represent irrigation condition) and from the sides of the tank (to represent sub –surface flow condition and effluence of the groundwater). Each case involved ten runs; for each run, discharge, total head loss, and amount of sediment were recorded. It was found that crushed gravel filter would work similarly to natural graded gravel filter after a certain time from the beginning of runs. It was also found that the discharge and sediment when using crushed gravel filter were close to or equal to that with natural graded gravel filter. The hydraulic conductivity and the exit gradient values were calculated in this research. It was found that their values were so different between the two types of filters, but at the end of the laboratory work, the hydraulic conductivity would be approximately the same. The exit gradient of crushed gravel filter was lower than that of natural graded gravel filter due to the large pores between the filter particles. Finally, the results showed that, it is possible to use crushed gravel filter material in drainage systems, which is less costly and easier to place than natural graded gravel filter.

Learning to Read in a Local Language in Uganda: Creating Learner Profiles to Track Progress and Guide Instruction Using Early Grade Reading Assessment Results. RTI Press, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2021.op.0068.2106.

Abstract:
The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) is used to evaluate studies and monitor projects that address reading skills in low- and middle-income countries. Results are often described solely in terms of a passage-reading subtask, thereby overlooking progress in related skills. Using archival data of cohort samples from Uganda at two time points in three languages (Ganda, Lango, and Runyankore-Rukiga), we explored a methodology that uses passage-reading results to create five learner profiles: Nonreader, Beginner, Instructional, Fluent, and Next-Level Ready. We compared learner profiles with results on other subtasks to identify the skills students would need to develop to progress from one profile to another. We then used regression models to determine whether students’ learner profiles were related to their results on the various subtasks. We found membership in four categories. We also found a shift in the distribution of learner profiles from Grade 1 to Grade 4, which is useful for establishing program effectiveness. The distribution of profiles within grades expanded as students progressed through the early elementary grades. We recommend that those who are discussing EGRA results describe students by profiles and by the numbers that shift from one profile to another over time. Doing so would help describe abilities and instructional needs and would show changes in a meaningful way.
