Groover, Daria. "Head Start Transition to Elementary School: Is the Early Intervention Sustained?" Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73320.

Full text
Abstract:
Poverty is a social context that has direct impact on students' performance since the conditions associated with poverty (brain development, social interactions, nutrition, and emotional environment) all play a role in developmental outcomes. Head Start is an early intervention program designed to address the unique needs of students from poverty. The Head Start Impact Study (DHHS, ACF, 2012) and other research (Lee, Brooks-Gunn, and Schnur, 1988; Ramey and Ramey, 2004) indicate that the academic achievement of low-income students who participated in Head Start is mixed as they move through elementary school. The purpose of the Head Start program is to prepare students with skills so that they begin kindergarten on an even playing field with their more advantaged peers (DHHS, ACF, 2013). Although students who participate in Head Start begin kindergarten with the appropriate readiness skills, initial gains are not maintained as they move through elementary school (Burkham and Lee, 2002). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the effects of the Head Start program as its students move through kindergarten and first grade. In the study, I analyzed data to find relationships between student performance on the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) (University of Virginia, 2010) and classroom practices that led to high achievement. Two Title I schools were studied. PALS scores were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVAs and multiple regressions. Reading performance in second grade was measured using scores from the Developmental Reading Assessment (Beave, 2006). Qualitative data were collected through interviews, focus groups, and document reviews. These data were utilized to make connections between the results of PALS and reading scores and the best practices being used in schools that showed strong results for the kindergarten and first grade students in the study. By triangulating data, I uncovered relationships between best practice strategies being used in high performing schools and achievement of former Head Start enrollees.<br>Ed. D.

Sbizera, Martinez Aline. "Reevaluating the dynamics of intertidal rocky shores: The foraging and behavioural ecology of an understudied grazer and its effects on benthic assemblages." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/15485.

Full text
Abstract:
The strongest grazing effect among all marine benthic systems is on intertidal rocky shores. Among intertidal grazers, limpets are well-known structuring agents altering the distribution of rocky shore assemblages. Globally, there are other abundant herbivores whose ecological importance in the dynamics of rocky shores is poorly studied as is the case for herbivorous starfish. Parvulastra exigua is a small starfish that occurs at great densities in rock pools on intertidal shores. This research aimed to understand the behavioural ecology of P. exigua by investigating the feeding and foraging habits of the starfish, competitive interactions between P. exigua and limpets, and the consequent effects on algal assemblages. Parvulastra exigua showed a narrow diet breadth with selection for microalgal food. This species fed during all periods of the tidal cycle. During immersion, the starfish foraged within and around rock pools and only foraged in pools whilst the tide was out. The starfish foraged near their rock pools, potentially creating a halo effect due to localized grazing. Rock pool fidelity in P. exigua varied among locations suggesting that the impact of this starfish on algal assemblages might be contingent on the availability of refugia at low tide and that the extent of the halo effect by P. exigua will vary from place to place. Parvulastra exigua revealed to be an equal competitor to a key limpet on the shore and the starfish was as efficient in controlling macroalgal growth as the limpet, with the strongest effect inside rock pools. These findings demonstrate that P. exigua is an important grazer in intertidal rocky shores. Herbivorous starfish occur on other rocky shores around the world and in sand flats, seagrass and kelp forests. Thus, future work is relevant to examine the effects of starfish herbivory on other shores and ecosystems.

Abstract:
This paper has investigated the right to equivalent education in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities. What has been investigated is what is the right to equivalent education and factors such as finances, equivalent and quality within two Swedish municipalities. The study has examined with the help of New public management and implementation theories to investigate how two municipalities work with implementing political decisions but also how they are steering, controlling and the evaluation of school administration and pupils. The study concludes that a policy on equivalent education may be needed to increase the equivalent for students in the compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities. The study has also concluded that there are two key concepts that increase equivalence for students in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities, it's the need of the pupils and their knowledge development to enchur equivalent education. The two municipalities and the school administration need to work on is: to have a good foundation in the schools' systematic quality work to achieve the requirements of the Education Act and the curriculum from the National Agency for Education, the goal of new public management to be achieved. It turns out that the municipalities' financial management is partly crucial for the school's development especially with teacher density and competent staff. Neither municipality has a successful implementation due to the municipalities being in different phases in the policy process for the systematic quality work and the work in the school administration.Something from the two municipalities is that it is complex to work and manage the compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities where the state of Gothenburg works with a systematic work to follow the law and curriculum while Laxå municipality works more on a value- based system on students' needs. To have a clear path on what equivalent education for pupils in the compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities it's that they need both the structure that the state of Gothenburg has and the value- based system on needs Laxå municipality has. There is a need for further research on what type of policy to ensure equivalent education in compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities.

Kennard, Kirtis Frankland. "A Simple Method for Evaluating Wear in Different Grades of Tooling Applied to Friction Stir Spot Welding." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5529.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study tools consisting of a 5mm cylindrical pin and a 12mm shoulder held by a simple tool holder were used to compare the wear of 11 tooling materials. The objective was to determine if using these tools in a spot welding configuration to simulate friction stir welding could differentiate the potential performance of tooling materials. All tools were made of varying percentages of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), tungsten (W) and rhenium (Re). The materials are referred to herein as GV1, GV2, G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, G8 and G9.The tools were run to 205 welds if they did not fracture first. The grades averaged the following quantities of welds before fracture failure GV-1:0; GV-2:200; G1:82; G2:204; G3:205; G4:205; G5:96; G7:102.73; G8:21.2; G9:38.5. Of the tools that ran the full 205 welds without chipping, the average calculated volume loss, which was the best indication of wear, was as follows G2:1.83%; G3:2.53%; G4:2.41%; G5:1.93%; and G7:2.30%.The study showed that G2 had the least wear and G6 had the most wear, of those tools that completed all 205 spot welds. Fracture was the failure mode of all grades with over 70% CBN content. It was found that small CBN grain size was not correlated to better wear performance, as has been seen in a prior study.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how the system of examination, in broad terms, was presented in the debate about grading around the political decisions regarding the upper secondary school between 1960 and 1995. The point of departure is the narratives that were constructed during the time period. The main objective is to trace and interpret changes in the narratives of evaluation as a part of the political project of democratization and individualization of the school system. Special attention is given to the different grading techniques and implications for the relation between State, teacher and pupil that surfaced in and around the school reforms in 1964 and 1994. This also sheds significant light on the meaning constructions and struggle around the State’s relation to the individual - teachers and pupils - and how power was to be viewed and organized in the new homogenous and democratic school. The thesis also shows the rivalry of narratives and how a narrative can be given various meanings in relation to the political project of creating a school that advocates the democratic opportunities and equal rights of pupils.

Gandra, João Pedro Machado da. "Preliminary study on the production of functionally graded materials by friction stir processing." Master's thesis, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/4889.

Full text
Abstract:
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica<br>An investigation was carried out to evaluate the potential application of Friction Stir Processing (FSP) to produce Functionally Graded Materials (FGM‟s). Friction stir processed materials can be considered as FGM‟s since the localized microstructural modification results in a gradual property modification. Therefore, to enhance hardness and ductility at specific superficial levels, surface layers of processed material were produced by multiple-pass FSP with an overlap ratio of 0.5. Overlapping was done on the advancing (AS) and retreating sides (RS) to study potential differences on the resulting mechanical properties. It was observed that processing in these two conditions led to different surface topography, since overlapping by the advancing side resulted in a wave-like surface profile. The mechanisms involved in FSP also led to its exploitation for the production of particle-reinforced Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) materials, as the severe plastic deformation produced during the process promotes the dispersion of the particles within the matrix. An investigation was conducted in order to produce aluminium based functionally graded MMCs reinforced by SiC ceramic particles with median size of 118.8, 37.4 and 12.3 micron. AA5083 aluminium alloy plates in the H111 and partially annealed conditions were processed. Several strategies for reinforcement were investigated and its influence on the particle distribution and homogeneity. The most promising results were achieved when the pin fully overlapped the groove. SiC fraction area analysis revealed two orthogonal gradients. Since FSP was used as a surface processing technique, the magnitude of the microstructural effects generated by the tool gradually decreases along the depth of the processed material. A second gradient was generated parallel to the bead surface due to the asymmetric nature of material flow around the tool. The use of smaller sized particles led to more homogeneous composite layers and smother gradients. Tool wear was very significant, proving that SiC reinforcement is not the most suitable method to produce FGM‟s.

Abstract:

LsGRP1 expression and purification were carried on for preparation of LsGRP1 polyclonal antibody. Western blot analysis detected LsGRP1 as a protein of 38.2 kDa following extraction with non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 and reductant β-mercaptoethanol. A protein of 66 kDa was detected following extraction with hot water-NaOH and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone. Extracts of Lilum ‘Star Gazer’ leaves in different treatments were stably detected the protein of 38.2 kDa, but the protein of 66 kDa was only detected in the protein samples of systemic leaves, indicating that posttranslational modification(s) or large mixture composition of LsGRP1 might occur. In addition, the protein of 66 kDa could be detected in SA-treated protoplasts, and protein signal changes from the cell to culture supernatant as the time increased. Confocol microscopy study indicated that LsGRP1-GFP fusion protein was not present evenly in the protoplast cytoplasm, but accumulated inside the cell membrane. Thus, LsGRP1 may exist in the extracellular matrix or cell wall in Lilum ‘Star Gazer’ leaves was presumed.

Four six graders from Pingtung area participated in this study. Data collected from semi-structured interviews, and in- sessions think-aloud protocols. The n-point star model includes model-eliciting, model-exploration and model-adaptation. Model-eliciting activity includes eight activities to guide participants drawing five-pointed stars and six-pointed stars in circles, frame the primary star drawing methods as well. Model-exploration activity guided students to apply primary, advanced, and higher-level methods to drawing points stars and built up personal primary, advanced, and higher-level n-point star drawing modeling. Model-adaptation activity provides children to transfer and elaborate information to generalize the star drawing methods. The findings are: 1. Participants’ performances high correlation with their subordinate levels. 2. Mathematical modeling activities are able to develop children’s potential ability in the zone of proximal development (ZPD) effectively. 3. Thinking aloud protocol improves participants’ self-awareness, self-recording, self-directing, and self-reinforcement abilities, guide them to the development of target behaviors as well. 4. Estimation and verification assist children to modify a mathematical model. 5. Mathematical modeling activities provide a different mathematical learning method from the extant methods. 6. The n-point star modeling activity provides another possible method to examine students’ geometric thoughts abilities. In addition, this study suggested instructors in the field of mathematical modeling educations should strengthen pedagogical content knowledge to teach students mathematical modeling establishment. Abstract:
This dissertation presents two chemo-dynamical analyses of metal-poor stars found within the Milky Way. 115 metal-poor candidate stars, including 28 confirmed very metal-poor stars, selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey are presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectroscopy. An additional 30 confirmed very metal-poor stars selected from Pristine are examined based on Gemini/GRACES spectroscopy. Chemical abundances are determined for a total of 19 elements (Li, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Nd, Eu) across these studies, which are combined with Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions to paint a chemically diverse map of ancient stars in the Galaxy. Abundance patterns similar to those seen in "normal" metal-poor Galactic halo stars are found in a majority of the stars studied here, however new discoveries of a handful of chemically unique and kinematically intriguing metal-poor stars are presented. The chemo-dynamics of these novel stellar relics point towards chemical signatures of unique and potentially unstudied stellar yields, in addition to stars with origins in accreted dwarf galaxies and the ancient progenitors of the proto-Milky Way. The success of these relatively small studies heralds the great contributions to Galactic archaeology expected from the next generation of large multi-object spectroscopic surveys. Contained within are two other projects that introduce data products related to Gemini Observatory instruments. A version of the convolutional neural network StarNet, tuned to medium-resolution R~6000 H-band spectra is presented. This model was trained on synthetic stellar spectra containing a range of data augmentation steps to more accurately reflect the observed spectra expected from medium-resolution instruments, like the Gemini-North Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) or GIRMOS. In an era when spectroscopic surveys are capable of collecting spectra for hundreds of thousands of stars, fast and efficient analysis methods are required to maximize scientific impact, and StarNet delivers on these expectations over a range of spectral resolutions. Finally, a python package called Nifty4Gemini, and its associated Pyraf/Python based pipeline for processing NIFS observations is included. Nifty4Gemini reduces NIFS raw data and produces a flux and wavelength calibrated science cube with the full signal-to-noise, ready for science analysis.<br>Graduate

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄師範大學<br>英語學系<br>94<br>English learning is getting popular on the island, and many parents are sending their young children to learn English as early as possible. Besides, the public elementary schools started extending their English-language courses from the fifth grade to the third grade. The primary goal of this study is to examine the effect of early start and parental SES on sixth-graders’ English proficiency. The subjects were 504 sixth-grade students from nine Elementary schools in Kaohsiung County. Students’ English proficiency was defined as the scores on the English proficiency test adapted from the one developed by the Bureau of Education in Taipei County in 2005. A questionnaire was designed by the researcher to understand the subjects’ background characteristics and parental involvement. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1. The subjects’ English proficiency test scores did not show a bimodal distribution but showed students’ high score tendency, especially students’ listening scores. 2. An early start in English learning had a significant influence on sixth-graders’ listening and reading proficiency. 3. The starting grade, either before third grade or after third grade, of formal English instruction at elementary school did not affect sixth graders’ English proficiency and the trend of children’s early start in extra English learning. 4. There was a greatly significant relation between the length of years of English learning and sixth graders’ listening and reading proficiency; that is, the longer the students have learned English, the better their English proficiency was. 5. The students who were taught by both English-speaking natives and Chinese-speaking English teachers had the best outcome in English learning. 6. Students’ interest in English learning significantly affected their English listening and reading proficiency. 7. The longer the students have learned English, the higher their interest in English learning is, and vice versa. 8. The higher the students’ SES belonged to, the higher their English proficiency was. 9. Parental SES was highly related to students’ early start in English learning. 10. There was a significant relation between parental involvement and sixth graders’ English proficiency. 11. Those families with higher SES tended to involve more in their children’s English learning. Finally, it is suggested that English teachers should provide students with an authentic, interactive, and constructive language learning environment to raise students’ motivation. In addition, parents should pay more attention to and involve more in their children’s English learning.

Van, Niekerk Claudette. "The perception of social media as a promotional mix element in star-graded accommodation establishments in the Western Cape province of South Africa." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18496.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the advent of the Internet, the number of individuals and organisations using tools such as the World Wide Web and cell phones has increased, and is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. Social media has provoked fundamentally different ways of doing business, and organisations rapidly had to get on this social media bandwagon to stay up to date with the latest market trends and ahead of the competition. Although social media is already broadly used among South African businesses, the perception regarding the use of social media as a promotional mix element has not been investigated sufficiently in South Africa. The primary purpose of this study was therefore to determine the perception of star-graded accommodation establishments, operating in the Western Cape province of South Africa, regarding the use of social media as a promotional mix element. A broad and in-depth literature review was conducted on the use of social media and social media as a probable promotional mix element. An empirical study was conducted, in which data was collected from star-graded accommodation establishments operating in the Western Cape by means of a web-based (computer-assisted) self-administered questionnaire. A quantitative approach was followed in order to satisfy the research objectives of this study. The results of this research study indicate that social media is perceived to be an instrumental marketing element in star-graded accommodation establishments and can indeed be considered an element of the promotional mix.<br>Business Management<br>MCOM (Business Management)

Abstract:
碩士<br>嶺東科技大學<br>經營管理研究所<br>99<br>This research aims to address the influence of the cooperative learning teaching method on cooperative skills in learning domains, learning performances, peer interactions and learning motives. The teaching design in this research adopts STAD (Student Teams Achievement Divisions) with a control of 54 3rd-grade students in the elementary school for a quasi-experimental research in a period of 8 weeks. The data obtained from the experiment were then deducted and alanyzed by means of descriptive statistics, cross tables, pared sample t tests and independent sample t tests in the purpose of understanding the difference between two subgroups under experimental treating, and further to address the effect of schoolkid genders on cooperative skills, learing performances, peer interactions and learning motives. The deduction of this research can be obtained as follows. A. The effectiveness between various social learing domain teaching methods a. In the aspect of “cooperative skills in the domain of social learning”: To the schoolkids who accept “the cooperative learning teaching method”, among seven cooperative skills, two of which, i.e. “softly speaking” and “encouragement” are going downward; two hold the same level including “listening” and “gratitude to their schoolmates in the same group”; the other skills such as “actively expressing one’s own views and opinions”, “speaking to the point of topics” and “no interjections” are going upward. There is a significantly positive relationship between the cooperative learning teaching method and the improvement of cooperative skills. b. In the aspect of “learning performances in the domain of social learning”: In the score from “learning performance after-test in the domain of social learning”, the schoolkids who accepted “the cooperative learning teaching method” is not conspiciously better than those who accept “the general didactic teaching method”. c. In the aspect of “learning motives in the domain of social learing”: The score in “learning motive scale” obtained from shoolkids who accept “the cooperative learning teaching method” is conspiciously better than those who accept “the general didactic teaching method”. d. In the aspect of “peer interactions in the domain of social learning”: In the score of “table of learning intention in the same group”, the schoolkids who accept “the cooperative learning teaching method” is not conspiciously better than those who accept “the general didactic teaching method”. B. The effectiveness of schoolkid genders on cooperative skills, learning performances, peer interactions and learning motives. a. In the aspect of effectiveness of shoolkid genders to cooperative skills and learning performances, girls are much better boys. b. In the aspect of effectivenes of shoolkid genders to peer interactions and learning motives, there is no obvious difference between each other. C. With the conclusion obtained from the above research, relevent practical suggestions can be made to the teaching and study going forward and work as references by teachers in the practice of cooperative learning instructions and researches in the future. Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北市立大學<br>應用物理暨化學系<br>103<br>A Study on the Effectiveness of Integrating Instructional Media for Star-Observing Units on Elementary School Fifth Graders : An Example of the Elementary Schools in New Taipei City Abstract The purpose of this study is to integrate instructional media for star-observing units and explore the effect on learning achievements concerning astronomical concepts on elementary school fifth graders. The design for the study adopts three steps: pre-test, teaching, post-test and the study contains the experimental group which adopts instructional media in teaching and the control group which uses the traditional lecture method. Because of the limitation that the elementary school which the researcher is serving in is remote and small-sized with fewer students. Another elementary school located in the same district, Sanxia District, New Taipei City, with the same scale and conditions as the researcher’s school is selected as research subjects. The number of students for this study in two classes of both schools is 74 fifth graders. Through the questionnaires of pre-tests and post-tests regarding astronomical concepts and the table of attitudes toward astronomy, the study explores the difference regarding astronomical concepts and attitudes toward astronomy between the two groups after the teaching of star-observing units. The findings are as follows. 1. Students in the experimental group with instructional media have better grades than those in the control group in the post-test of “cognitive test of astronomical concepts”, and there is a significant difference between the two groups. 2. For the students in the experimental group and the control group, the learning achievements of male and female students do not reach a significant difference. Learning achievements do not vary due to gender difference in the two groups. 3. Students have different abilities, but the students of different abilities in the experimental group have superior grades to those in the control group in star-observing units, and there is a significant difference. 4. The students in the experimental group have obviously higher attitude toward “astronomy” than students in the control group, and there is a significant difference between the two groups. Based on the result of this study, the suggestions are as below. Educators should make use of instructional media, but the media shouldn’t be relied on overly. As for star-observing units, educators should teach more related knowledge based on their teaching contents. For future research, researchers can adopt more qualitative methods to make teaching research more plentiful, diversified, and objective.
