Abstract:

Boden, Margaret A. 7. The Singularity. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199602919.003.0007.

Abstract:
AI’s future has been hyped since its inception. Today, the prime example is the Singularity: the proposed point in time at which machines become more intelligent than humans. First, AI would reach human-level intelligence. Soon afterwards, AGI would morph into ASI—‘S’ for superhuman, with systems intelligent enough to copy themselves to outnumber us and improve themselves to out-think us. The most important problems and decisions would then be addressed by computers. ‘The Singularity’ explains that this notion is hugely contentious. It considers competing predictions, concluding that even if the probability of the Singularity is extremely small, the possible consequences are so grave that we should start taking precautions now.

Abstract:
In 2012, the Russian Federation passed the “Foreign Agent” law, requiring nonprofit organizations that receive funding from abroad and engage in political activity to register with the government as a “foreign agent.” This chapter traces the enactment of this law in the Baikal community. Only one organization fell victim to the law: Baikal Environmental Wave. The Wave was one of Siberia’s oldest environmental organizations and was the most committed to environmental advocacy. It was no stranger to state persecution, but this law rendered it incapable of operating and it finally shut down. The Foreign Agent law represents a new form of dominating the field of power. Unlike the Soviet government, which outlawed all independent activity, the Putin government practices “legal nihilism,” using the law only to target strategic opponents. Civil society may be independent and thrive, but it cannot threaten the state without grave consequences.

Abstract:
Chapter 11 draws together the major conclusions from each of the chapters and considers their implications for the policy reform agenda. The consequences of electoral malpractice can be grave. Failures generate contentious elections characterized by lengthy court challenges, opposition boycotts, and public demonstrations. Major flaws weaken the legitimacy and credibility of elections, and thus corrode the foundation of liberal democracy. The chapter advocates four practical steps designed to improve the quality of American contests: improving the independence and professionalism of electoral administrators, implementing impartial dispute resolution mechanisms to deal with challenges, introducing registration and balloting facilities that maximize both security and convenience, and strengthening accountability and transparency. These steps could potentially reduce party polarization and expand a broad consensus about a bipartisan package of reforms. This chapter summarizes the book’s core arguments and the recommended policies helping to strengthen the quality of elections both at home and abroad.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessing migration in the context of climate change, this book draws on empirical research to offer a unique analysis of policy-making in the field. This detailed account is a vital step in understanding the links between global discourses on human mobilities, climate change and specific policy responses. The idea that people are being forced to move because of climate change, and that in the future even more people will be forced to do so, has captured imaginations globally. The majority of these representations of lives touched by climate change are expressions of outrage that the actions of a few will affect the lives of so many, that climate change will have consequences so grave that people will be forced to leave their homes. The aim of this book is to examine the distinct policy debate surrounding the climate change and human mobility nexus, in particular the construction of these two related concepts as a distinct phenomenon that requires policy responses.

Abstract:
This chapter weighs the competing arguments over the wisdom of invading Iraq, and constructs the strongest possible case in favour of ‘regime change’, both with hindsight, and without. Hawks pose serious ‘what if’ questions: what were the alternatives to war? What costs would US-led allies have borne if they had refrained from invading? This chapter demonstrates that the defences of the war rest on counterfactual historical claims that are implausible and less grave than what actually happened. The strongest retrospective case for war still involves fragile gains made at costs so heavy, with such serious unintended consequences, that decision-makers would have judged them prohibitive, had they known them in advance. Not invading was a lesser evil than invading. Saddam’s Iraq was a diminished and wretched force that posed little serious threat. The US-led coalition had successfully shackled the regime by 2003, weakened its ability to threaten the region and had established effective deterrence. Between ‘regime change’ and ‘doing nothing’ there was a prudent middle way of vigilant ‘overwatch’ available to US-led forces.

Reamer, Frederic G. On the Parole Board. Columbia University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.7312/columbia/9780231177337.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Few people experience life inside of prison. Even fewer are charged with the responsibility of deciding whether inmates should be released. In his twenty-four years on the Rhode Island Parole Board, Frederic G. Reamer has judged the fates of thousands of inmates, deciding which are ready to reenter society and which are not. It is a complicated choice that balances injury to victims and their families against an offender’s capacity for transformation. With rich retellings of criminal cases, On the Parole Board is a singular book that explains from an insider’s perspective how a variety of factors play into the board’s decisions: the ongoing effect on victims and their loved ones, the life histories of offenders, the circumstances of the crimes, and the powerful and often extraordinary displays of forgiveness and remorse. Pulling back the curtain on a process largely shrouded in mystery, Reamer lays bare the thorny philosophical issues of crime and justice and their staggering consequences for inmates, victims, and the public at large. Reamer and his colleagues often hope, despite encountering behavior at its worst, that criminals who have made horrible mistakes have the capacity for redemption. Yet that hope must be tempered with a realistic appraisal of risk, given the potentially grave consequences of releasing an inmate who may commit a future crime. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the complexities of the criminal justice system, the need to correct its injustices, and the challenges of those who must decide when justice has been served.

Full text
Abstract:
Poetry has long dominated the cultural landscape of modern Iraq, simultaneously representing the literary pinnacle of high culture and giving voice to the popular discourses of mass culture. As the favored genre of culture expression for religious clerics, nationalist politicians, leftist dissidents, and avant-garde intellectuals, poetry critically shaped the social, political, and cultural debates that consumed the Iraqi public sphere in the twentieth century. The popularity of poetry in modern Iraq, however, made it a dangerous practice that carried serious political consequences and grave risks to dissident poets. The Dangers of Poetry is the first book to narrate the social history of poetry in the modern Middle East. Moving beyond the analysis of poems as literary and intellectual texts, Kevin Jones shows how poems functioned as social acts that critically shaped the cultural politics of revolutionary Iraq. He narrates the history of three generations of Iraqi poets who navigated the fraught relationship between culture and politics in pursuit of their own ambitions and agendas. Through this historical analysis of thousands of poems published in newspapers, recited in popular demonstrations, and disseminated in secret whispers, this book reveals the overlooked contribution of these poets to the spirit of rebellion in modern Iraq.

Full text
Abstract:
While the Christian Right has long voiced grave concerns about the Supreme Court and cases such as Roe v. Wade, until recently its cultivation of the resources needed to effectively enter the courtroom had paled in comparison with its efforts in more traditional political arenas. A small constellation of high-profile leaders within the Christian Right began to address this imbalance in earnest in the pivot from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, investing in an array of institutions aimed at radically transforming American law and legal culture. Separate But Faithful is the first in-depth examination of these efforts—their causes, contours, and consequences. Drawing on an impressive amount of original data from a variety of sources, the book examines the conditions that gave rise to a set of distinctly “Christian Worldview” law schools and legal institutions. Further, the book analyzes their institutional missions and cultural makeup and evaluates their transformative impacts on law and legal culture to date. Separate But Faithful finds that this movement, while struggling to influence the legal and political mainstream, has succeeded in establishing a resilient Christian conservative beacon of resistance: a separate but faithful space from which to incrementally challenge the dominant legal culture by training and credentialing, in the words of Jerry Falwell, “a generation of Christian attorneys who could . . . infiltrate the legal profession with a strong commitment to the Judeo-Christian ethic.”

Abstract:
Low-grade persistent inflammation is a common feature of chronic kidney disease. This chapter provides an overview of the pathogenesis and clinical consequences of elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines in the uraemic milieu with an emphasis on dialysis stages. It reviews the multifactorial dialysis- and non-dialysis-related causes of inflammation and its purported role in the development of protein energy wasting, vascular calcification, endocrine disorders, and depression. The chapter also discusses the use and the need of monitoring C-reactive protein levels regularly in the clinical setting and comments on possible therapeutic approaches to reduce inflammation in these patients.

Kirkpatrick, Kate. Sartre on Sin. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198811732.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book argues that Jean-Paul Sartre’s early, anti-humanist philosophy is indebted to the Christian doctrine of original sin. On the standard reading, Sartre’s most fundamental and attractive idea is freedom: he wished to demonstrate the existence of human freedom, and did so by connecting consciousness with nothingness. Taking Being and Nothingness as its primary exegetical focus, this book demonstrates that Sartre’s concept of nothingness (le néant) has a Christian genealogy which has been overlooked in philosophical and theological discussions of his work. Previous scholars have noted the resemblance between Sartre’s and Augustine’s ontologies: to name but one shared theme, both thinkers describe the human as the being through which nothingness enters the world. But no in-depth examination of this ‘resemblance’ has been made. Using historical, exegetical, and conceptual methods, Sartre on Sin demonstrates that Sartre’s intellectual formation prior to his discovery of phenomenology included theological elements—especially concerning the compatibility of freedom with sin and grace. After outlining the French Augustinianisms by which Sartre’s account of the human as ‘between being and nothingness’ was informed, the book offers a close reading of Being and Nothingness which shows (a) that the psychological, epistemological, and ethical consequences of Sartre’s le néant closely resemble the consequences of its theological predecessor and (b) that his account of freedom can be read as an anti-theodicy. Finally, it argues that Sartre’s insights are valuable resources for contemporary hamartiology.

Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Marble Faun. Edited by Susan Manning. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199554072.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Any narrative of human action and adventure – whether we call it history or Romance – is certain to be a fragile handiwork, more easily rent than mended.’ The fragility – and the durability – of human life and art dominate this story of American expatriates in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. Befriended by Donatello, a young Italian with the classical grace of the ‘Marble Faun’, Miriam, Hilda, and Kenyon find their pursuit of art taking a sinister turn as Miriam's unhappy past precipitates the present into tragedy. Hawthorne's ‘International Novel’ dramatizes the confrontation of the Old World and the New and the uncertain relationship between the ‘authentic’ and the ‘fake’, in life as in art. The author's evocative descriptions of classic sites made The Marble Faun a favourite guidebook to Rome for Victorian tourists, but this richly ambiguous symbolic romance is also the story of a murder, and a parable of the Fall of Man. As the characters find their civilized existence disrupted by the awful consequences of impulse, Hawthorne leads his readers to question the value of Art and Culture and addresses the great evolutionary debate which was beginning to shake Victorian society.

McCrory Calarco, Jessica. Negotiating Opportunities. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190634438.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Negotiating Opportunities reveals that the middle-class advantage in school is, at least in part, a negotiated advantage. Essentially, this means that middle-class students secure advantages not only by complying with teachers’ expectations but also by requesting (and successfully securing) support in excess of what is fair or required. This book traces that negotiated advantage from its origins at home to its consequences at school. It follows a group of middle-class and working-class students from third to seventh grade and draws on observations and interviews with children, parents, and teachers. The middle-class students learned to negotiate advantages from their parents’ coaching at home. Teachers tended to grant those requests, even when they wanted to say “no.” As a result, middle-class students received the bulk of teachers’ assistance, accommodations, and positive attention. That extra support gave middle-class students advantages over their working-class peers, including more correct answers on tests, more time to complete assignments, more opportunities for creativity, and more recognition for their ideas. The book concludes with a discussion of these findings and their implications for scholars, educators, parents, and policymakers. It argues that teaching working-class students to act like their middle-class peers will not be enough to alleviate inequalities because middle-class families will find new ways to negotiate advantages that keep them one step ahead.
