ABSTRACTThe infectivity of Hymenolepis nana eggs from faecal pellets in the rectum of mice was compared with that of the eggs in gravid proglottids of adult H. nana and with that of the eggs in excreted faecal pellets to find out a simple method for collecting H. nana eggs of high infectivity to mice. Eggs from faecal pellets in the rectum showed higher infectivity than those from gravid proglottids and as high infectivity as those from gravid proglottids selected by a watch-glass rotation technique. Both schistosome species reached sexual maturity in these hosts. However, they differed markedly in terms of egg production rates and preferred sites of tissue egg deposition. Tissue egg deposition commenced between 4 and 5 weeks in the case of Schistosoma margrebowiei and between 6 and 7 weeks in the case of S. leiperi. Evidence in humans and rodents suggests the importance of circadian rhythmicity in parturition. A molecular clock underlies the generation of circadian rhythmicity. While this molecular clock has been identified in numerous tissues, the expression and regulation of clock genes in tissues relevant to parturition is largely undefined. Here, the expression and regulation of the clock genes Bmal1, Clock, cryptochrome (Cry1/2) and period (Per1/2) was examined in the murine gravid uterus, placenta and fetal membranes during late gestation. The rate of infection in males (52%) was higher than in females (28%). Pregnancy-induced metabolic changes are regulated by signals from an expanded adipose organ. Placental growth factor (PlGF), acting through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1, may be among those signals. There is a steep rise in circulating PlGF during normal pregnancy, which is repressed in gravidas who develop preeclampsia. PlGF-deficiency in mice impairs adipose vascularization and development. Abstract The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is not only the site of myasthenia gravis, the main topic of this book, but also of the LambertEaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), which is caused by autoantibodies against the voltage-gated calcium channels on the presynaptic nerve terminal that are involved in neurotransmitter release (see Chapter 9). The pathophysiology of these disorders and the ability to study them by injecting immunoglobulins into mice or rats indicate that the motor nerve terminal and neuromuscular junction are extremely vulnerable to circulating antibodies. Abstract Brackish waters drawn from the McMurray and Grand Rapids geological formations are being used increasingly to support the recovery of bitumen from Alberta oil sands by steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD); yet, these waters are proving to be surprisingly corrosive. Because continuous availability of water is critical to sustained production, a study was initiated to determine the potential role of MIC in water handling and treatment facilities. Field samples of water and cut-out pipe provided by an operating company were characterized in terms of chemical and microbial activity. Cor

Abstract The microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) susceptibility of a material is inextricably linked to its microstructure. The thermomechanical cycle associated with welding produces extensive microstructural change in the vicinity of the weld. This work tested the hypothesis that fabrication procedure would alter MIC susceptibility. This study examined the effect of systematic variation in the amounts of cerium, sulfur and silicon on the corrosion susceptibility of welded AISI 8630 material in aqueous, anaerobic solutions. Experiments on bacterial attachment on AISI type 304 stainless steel welds and base metals were carried out to investigate whether factors other than surface roughness influence the attachment. Results showed that bacteria colonized more on weld metal coupons than on basemetal. Experiments that addressed the role of grain boundary/austenite-ferrite interfaces o

Abstract The design of offshore wind foundations is still evolving as large projects are being commissioned or planned for the northern part of Europe. Monopile foundations represent the most common design, but other structure types are also being installed, such as jackets, tripods and gravity foundations. In comparison with offshore structures for oil and gas production, wind foundations present some new challenges for corrosion protection. As the structures are unmanned, the requirements for operation and maintenance must be kept at a minimum. At the same time, the huge water volume in the

The Mooshla Intrusive Complex (MIC) is an Archean polyphase magmatic body located in the Doyon-Bousquet-LaRonde (DBL) mining camp of the Abitibi greenstone belt, Québec. The MIC is spatially associated with numerous gold (Au)-rich VMS, epizonal 'intrusion-related' Au-Cu vein systems, and shear zone-hosted (orogenic?) Au deposits. To elucidate genetic links between deposits and the MIC, mineralized samples from two of the epizonal 'intrusion-related' Au-Cu vein systems (Doyon and Grand Duc Au-Cu) have been characterized using a variety of analytical techniques.
