Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the three artists' workshops Røde Mor (Red Mother), Folkets Ateljé (The People's Studio) and GRAS, who worked between 1968 and 1975 in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Røde Mor was from the outset an articulated Communist graphic workshop loosely organised around collective exhibitions. It developed into a highly productive and professionalised group of artists that made posters by commission for political and social movements. Its artists developed a familiar and popular artistic language characterised by imaginative realism and socialist imagery. Folkets Ateljé, which has never been studied before, was a close knit underground group which created quick and immediate responses to concurrent political issues. This group was founded on the example of Atelier Populaire in France and is strongly related to its practices. Within this comparative study it is the group that comes closest to collective practises around 1968 outside Scandinavia, namely the democratic assembly. The silkscreen workshop GRAS stemmed from the idea of economic and artistic freedom, although socially motivated and politically involved, the group never implemented any doctrine for participation. The aim of this transnational study is to reveal common denominators to the three groups' poster art as it was produced in connection with a Scandinavian experience of 1968. By ‘1968' it is meant the period from the late 1960s till the end of the 1970s. It examines the socio-political conditions under which the groups flourished and shows how these groups operated in conjunction with the political environment of 1968. The thesis explores the relationship between political movements and the collective art making process as it appeared in Scandinavia. To present a comprehensible picture of the impact of 1968 on these groups, their artworks, manifestos, and activities outside of the collective space have been discussed. The argument has presented itself that even though these groups had very similar ideological stances, their posters and techniques differ. This has impacted the artists involved to different degrees, yet made it possible to express the same political goals. It is suggested to be linked with the Scandinavian social democracies and common experience of the radicalisation that took place mostly in the aftermath of 1968 proper. By comparing these three groups' it has been uncovered that even with the same socio-political circumstances and ideological stance divergent styles did develop to embrace these issue.

Abstract:

My twofold aim with this essay is, firstly, to examine the ideas about art expressed in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by the Victorian author Oscar Wilde. Secondly, I analyse how Oscar Wilde has implemented the philosophy of aestheticism throughout his novel. I achieve this by discussing the novel from the perspectives of the arts of painting, acting and literature. I examine the ideas expressed through the three main characters Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton. I give occurrences of alliteration, epigrams and theatrical traits of the novel as examples of how the novel in itself is a beautiful work of art. With this essay I wish to highlight the need for all types of art mentioned in The Picture of Dorian Gray to be included in any discussion about art in the novel. My thesis statement is that the philosophy of aestheticism is promoted throughout the novel. This philosophy states that art should only be seen as something beautiful. Art should not be expected to teach its audience any moral lessons. The over-all conclusion is that it is indeed the philosophy of aestheticism that is promoted in The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the ideal of male beauty in particular.

Abstract:
This essay argues, with the help of Lacanian psychoanalysis, that Dorian Gray, the protagonist in Oscar Wilde’s novel, fails to abide by the rules governed by the culture of society. It is argued that Lacan’s theories about the mirror stage develop Dorian’s character and his realizations of his true self as part of the culture which shapes him. The mirror is represented by the four characters Basil Hallward, Lord Henry Wotton, Sibyl Vane, and Sibyl’s brother James. Basil, Henry, and Sibyl are all representations of different aspects of the mirror explained by Lacan’s theories, and these three characters help Dorian realize his true identity and self.

This parar begins with a historic approach to the recourses, going through a point by analysis of the origin as well as the existing effects on the appeal and on the bill of review, arriving at its core by examining the possibility of using an ability attributed to the courts, through the appraisal of an appeal, in the judgement of a bill of review. Such a possibility is found regulated in § 39, of article 515 of the Civil Process Code, where it is foreseen that in cases of the Gonclusionof lhe process wíthout judgement of the merit, the court may, upon finding itself convinced about the matter placed betore it, and being only of law, immediately decide the dispute. Therefore, the court wíll evaluate the possíbility of the application of the rule of §3º, article 515, of the Civil Process Code in the judgament of the BiII of Revíew, deciding upon the merit of the controversy, even if there has not been a decísion by the first instance court
O presente trabalho se inicia através de uma abordagem histórica dos recursos, passando por uma análise pontual tanto da origem como dos efeitos existentes na apelação e no agravo de instrumento, chegando ao seu núcleo examinando a possibilidade de se utilizar uma faculdade atribuída aos tribunais, quando da apreciação de uma apelação, no julgamento de um agravo de instrumento. Tal possibilidade encontra-se disciplinada no § 3º, do art. 515, do Código de Processo Civil, onde prevê que, em casos de extinção do processo sem julgamento do mérito, o tribunal poderá, encontrando-se convencido sobre a matéria colocada à sua apreciação, e sendo ela só de direito, julgar desde logo a lide. Abstract:
A novel Gram negative, capsule-forming bacterium was previously isolated in Dr. G. Roland Vela's laboratory. The distribution of this bacterium in soils from various locations was investigated. Soil samples from 188 locations around the world were examined. Isolates of the bacterium were obtained from 50 of these soils, with 48 of the isolates found in soils from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This suggests that this region is the natural habitat of the bacterium. The other two isolates were obtained from Madrid, Spain and Taipei, Taiwan. None were found in soils from South America or Australia. A lack of variation in morphology and physiological properties in the isolates suggests that a homogeneous population exists, even from widespread geographical locations.

Abstract:
This practice-led research project examines some of the factors and issues facing artists working in the public domain who wish to engage with the community as audience. Using the methodology of action research, the three major creative projects in this study use art as a socio-political tool with the aim of providing an effective vehicle for broadening awareness, understanding forms of social protest and increasing tolerance for diversity. The three projects: Floodline November 7, 2004, Look in, Look out, and The Urban Terrorist Project, dealt with issues of marginalisation of communities, audiences and graffiti artists respectively. The artist/researcher is outlined as both creator and collaborator in the work. Processes included ephemeral elements, such as temporary installation and performance, as well as interactive elements that encouraged direct audience involvement as part of the work. In addition to the roles of creator and collaborator, both of which included audience as well as artist, the presence of an outside entity was evident. Whether local, legal authorities or prevailing attitudes, outside entities had an unavoidable impact on the processes and outcomes of the work. Each project elicited a range of responses from their respective audiences; however, the overarching concept of reciprocity was seen to be the crucial factor in conception, artistic methods and outcomes.

Ce travail de thèse a eu pour objet d'étudier la régulation par l'alimentation de la carnitine palmitoytransférase 1 (CPT 1) de truite arc-en-ciel (Oncorhynchus mykiss) au niveau cellulaire (activité enzymatique) et au niveau moléculaire expression des transcrits). La recherche du/des gènes CPT 1, inconnus chez les poissons, a abouti au clonage d'un ADNc de 1650pb. Il est exprimé dans tous les tissus analyśés : foie, coeur, muscle blanc, muscle rouge, intestin, rein et tissu adipeux. Cette isoforme de CPT 1 possè́de une délétion de 21 acides aminés dans la partie N-terminale de la protéine, site de liaison au malonyl-CoA. Différentes conditions nutritionnelles ont été testées : jeûne, teneur en lipides et en glucides et nature des sources protéiques et lipidiques du régime. L'ensemble des résultats montre que la CPT 1 de truite est faiblement régulée par la nature des composés alimentaires, elle est fortement stimulée dans des conditions de forte demande énergétique.

Abstract:
Background: Carriers of the APOE epsilon 4 allele are at increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), and have been shown to have reduced cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRgl) in the same brain areas frequently affected in AD. These individuals also exhibit reduced plasma levels of apolipoprotein E (apoE) attributed to a specific decrease in the apoE4 isoform as determined by quantification of individual apoE isoforms in APOE epsilon 4 heterozygotes. Whether low plasma apoE levels are associated with structural and functional brain measurements and cognitive performance remains to be investigated. Methods: Using quantitative mass spectrometry we quantified the plasma levels of total apoE and the individual apoE3 and apoE4 isoforms in 128 cognitively normal APOE epsilon 3/epsilon 4 individuals included in the Arizona APOE cohort. All included individuals had undergone extensive neuropsychological testing and 25 had in addition undergone FDG-PET and MRI to determine CMRgl and regional gray matter volume (GMV). Results: Our results demonstrated higher apoE4 levels in females versus males and an age-dependent increase in the apoE3 isoform levels in females only. Importantly, a higher relative ratio of apoE4 over apoE3 was associated with GMV loss in the right posterior cingulate and with reduced CMRgl bilaterally in the anterior cingulate and in the right hippocampal area. Additional exploratory analysis revealed several negative associations between total plasma apoE, individual apoE isoform levels, GMV and CMRgl predominantly in the frontal, occipital and temporal areas. Finally, our results indicated only weak associations between apoE plasma levels and cognitive performance which further appear to be affected by sex. Conclusions: Our study proposes a sex-dependent and age-dependent variation in plasma apoE isoform levels and concludes that peripheral apoE levels are associated with GMV, CMRgl and possibly cognitive performance in cognitively healthy individuals with a genetic predisposition to AD.

Abstract:
Gray gulls Larus modestus are unique among birds of northern Chile as the only species nesting in the interior Atacama Desert, and the only seagull nesting far (30 - 100 km) from surface water. During breeding-nesting (August - February) gray gulls congregate on the coast of northern Chile where they feed and initiate courtship. As early as August, breeding pairs commute daily to the inner desert to establish nesting territories, round-trip distances of 60-200 Km. During incubation (30 days) and brooding (7 days) adults alternate daily foraging flights to the coast. Afterwards, both adults forage daily for their chick(s) until fledging (ca. 60 days). Foraging flights and thermoregulatory costs during the period of maximal solar radiation, when ground temperatures may reach 61 C in the day and drop to 2 C at night, have selected for adaptations which minimize those costs: tolerance of hypothermia and hyperthermia; dark plumage; low egg-shell water vapor conductance; low standard metabolic rate; elaborate repertory of thermoregulatory behavior which allow adults to take advantage of microclimatic variations in the desert and minimize costs relative to a sympatric congenor, Larus belcheri scheduling foraging flights to take advantage of optimal atmospheric conditions and presence of forage fish (anchovies) close to the surface; scheduling migration to coincide with anchovy production and levels of interspecific competition; and reduced clutch size ( ≤ 2) relative to most seagulls. Periodic El Nino-Southern Oscillations (ENSO), which reduce principal food items of gray gulls, have selected for 'bet hedging" tactic by which L. modestus either ceases reproduction or varies clutch size between one and two, as observed during and after the 1982-83 ENSO. During a typical reproductive season, breeding pairs allocate a minimum of 39 percent of their net metabolized energy (NME) to foraging flights. Including energy content of eggs, females have an overall reproductive effort (RE=reproductive costs/NME) of 35.1 percent of 122,086.8 KJ per year.

L’enzyme Fem de Weissella viridescens catalyse le transfert d’un résidu L-alanyl de l’Ala-ARNtAla au précurseur cytoplasmique UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide. Nous avons montré que les résidus K36 et R211 de la protéine ainsi que les deux phosphates et les deux D-Ala de l’UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide forment un réseau de liaisons hydrogènes essentiel à l’activité de l’enzyme. Nous avons étudié la spécificité de FemXWv pour l’aminoacyl-ARNt et montré que la L-Ala est exclusivement transférée au précurseur du peptidoglycane in vivo. FemXWv est spécifique de l’Ala-ARNtAla in vitro, bien que Ser-ARNtSer et Gly-ARNtGly soient utilisables. Cette spécificité dépend principalement de la séquence nucléotidique du substrat. La mutagénèse du bras accepteur de l’ARNtAla, identifié comme le substrat minimum de FemXWv, a révélé que les bases C71 et C72 étaient essentielles à la reconnaissance séquence dépendante du subtrat. Le mésappariement G3•U70 de l’ARNtAla, principal déterminant d’identité de l’alanyl-ARNt synthétase, n’est pas essentiel pour FemXWv. Enfin, un groupement oxadiazole introduit à l’extrémité du bras accepteur inhibe FemXWv avec une IC50 de 1,4 µM

Estudos fitoquÃmicos anteriores relatam a presenÃa de alcalÃides indÃlicos do tipo iboga, sarpagina, vobasina, alÃm de alcalÃides do tipo piridocarbazol e terpenÃides. O presente trabalho relata o estudo fitoquÃmico das raÃzes e caule de P. affinis. AnÃlise cromatogrÃfica dos extratos hexÃnico e etanÃlico das raÃzes e do extrato etanÃlico do caule permitiu o isolamento e a identificaÃÃo de dez constituintes quÃmicos entre estes: os alcalÃides olivacina, peschienina, N-hidroxi-peschienina, voacangina, a mistura dos alcalÃides indÃlicos affnisina e iboxigaina, Nb-Ãxido de olivacina, isovoacristina hidroxiindolenina, voacangina, a mistura dos alcalÃides do tipo iboga voacangina e coronaridina e a mistura dos terpenÃides acetatos de Â-amirina e Â-amirina. Na determinaÃÃo estrutural dos compostos isolados utilizaram-se as tÃcnicas espectromÃtricas: IV, EM, RMN 1H e 13C incluindo tÃcnicas bidimensionais (COSY,HMQC,HMBC,NOESY) e, ainda, comparaÃÃo com dados espectromÃtricos descritos na literatura. Os acetatos de Â-amirina e Â-amirina e o Nb-Ãxido de olivacina sÃo reportados pela primeira vez nesta espÃcie, enquanto que os alcalÃides peschienina, N-hidroxi-peschienina e isovoacristina hidroxiindolenina s~ao subst^ancias novas. Foi feita a quantificaÃÃo do alcalÃide indÃlico olivacina na fraÃÃo alcaloÃdica dos extratos etanÃlicos das raÃzes e caule por meio de CLAE. O extrato etanÃlico das raÃzes, a fraÃÃo alcaloÃdica, a fraÃÃo nÃo-alcaloÃdica e compostos puros foram submetidos a ensaios antioxidantes utilizando os mÃtodos do Â-caroteno e do DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picrilidrazila). PA-9 e a fraÃÃo alcaloÃdica apresentaram significativa atividade e PA-8 revelou mÃdia atividade.

Previous phytochemical investigations reports indole alkaloids type iboga, sarpagine, vobasine, beyond alkaloids of the type pyridocarbazole and ter-penoids. The present work deals with to the phytochemical study of the roots and stem of P. aÂnis. The chromatographic analysis of extracts hexanic and etanolic of the roots and the etanolic extract of the stem allowed to the isolation and identiÂcation of ten chemical constituent, the alkaloids: olivacine, peschienine, N-hydroxy-peschienine, voacangine, mixture of indole alkaloids aÂnisine and iboxygaine, olivacine Nb-oxide, isovoacristine hydroxyindolenine, voacangine, mixture of the type iboga alkaloids of voacangine and coronaridine and the mixture of terpenoids Â-amirine and Â-amirine acetates. Structural determination of compounds were done by the spectrometrics techniques including IR,EM,1 H and 13C NMR including techniques (COSY,HMQC,HMBC,NOESY) and still, comparison with described spectrometrics data in literature. Abstract:
In 2010 the Louisiana legislature adopted the Louisiana Granting Resources and Autonomies for Diplomas (GRAD) Act, a statewide performance-based funding policy designed to improve performance among public colleges. This study, utilizing data collected from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) on 15 two-year public colleges over eight years, applied Generalized Least Squares (GLS) regression to retention rates, graduation rates, and degree productivity. Results suggest that the introduction of the policy had little immediate effect on overall institutional performance; however, there were some modest increases in long-term certificate productivity. Additionally, there were significant improvements in data quality throughout higher education after the introduction of the policy.

Three studies were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of seedling crowning using cardboard in reforestation with arboreal species of the Atlantic. The first study aimed to test the effect of the crowning with cardboard on the growth of Atlantic Forest species planted in a pasture area with dominance of Andropogon bicornis. The experimental design was randomized blocks with two treatments and 12 repetitions. Treatments consisted of crowning with cardboard or crowning with hoe applied to 11 tree species. We evaluated the growth of plants by measuring the height (H) and diameter of the collar height (DAC) at 6, 12 and 18 months after planting beyond survival rate. It was also carried out an assessment of the costs of each treatment. The results showed that the board did not interfere significantly in any forest species assessed. However, the survival rate was higher in the treatment crown of cardboard (80.7%) compared to the capping treatment with hoe (73.1%). In the economic aspect, the crowning with cardboard obtained material cost and labor up to 50% lower than the crowning with hoe. In the second study we evaluated the crowning efficiency with cardboard in the suppression of four species of grasses commonly found in forest areas in the Atlantic Forest. Four experiments were set up in places with dominant species A. bicornis, Urochloa decumbens, Urochloa umidicola and Panicum maximum. The experimental design was completely randomized with five replications. The treatments were the culmination of cardboard and without crowning. The cardboard efficiency was monitored by sampling the total biomass and the level of senescence of grasses in the area crowned. The cardboard was efficient in suppressing the four species of grasses evaluated, because after the evaluation period (100- 170 days) had hardly live plant material in the field of crowns. In the third study was rated as the crowning with cardboard influences the temperature and moisture in the surface layers in the soil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four treatments and eight repetitions. The treatments were 1 - crown with cardboard (cardboard disposed directly on the braqui?ria); 2 - no crowning; 3 - with cardboard crown after crown with hoe (willing cardboard on the exposed soil); 4 - crowning with hoe. The moisture in the layers from 0 to 5 cm and 5 to 10 cm of soil, and the temperature in the layers 0 and 2,5 cm, 2.5 to 5 cm and 5 to 10 cm of the soil were monitored during periods 19 and subsequent 7 days, respectively, at a rain simulation 130 mm for 24 hours and natural rainfall of 133 mm for 13 days. The results indicated that treatment 1 (crowning with cardboard) decreased soil drying speed while maintaining higher water content in the crown area compared to the other treatments. Both capping treatments showed cardboard soil temperature in the region of the crown to 8.5?C lower than the capping treatment with cardboard. The set of results of the three studies demonstrate that the use of the capping technique with cardboard in reforestation deployment can significantly reduce operating costs after planting, either by reducing hand labor used in capping operations, as the lower need for seedlings for replanting.

O primeiro estudo teve como objetivo testar o efeito do coroamento com papel?o sobre o crescimento de esp?cies da Mata Atl?ntica plantadas em uma ?rea de pastagem com domin?ncia de Andropogon bicornis. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com dois tratamentos e 12 repeti??es. Os tratamentos consistiram de coroamento com papel?o ou coroamento com enxada aplicados a 11 esp?cies arb?reas. Avaliou-se o crescimento das plantas atrav?s da mensura??o da altura (H) e di?metro a altura do coleto (DAC) aos 6, 12 e 18 meses ap?s o plantio al?m da taxa de sobreviv?ncia. Entretanto, a taxa de sobreviv?ncia foi maior no tratamento de coroamento com papel?o (80,7%) comparado ao tratamento de coroamento com enxada (73,1%). Foram montados quatro experimentos em s?tios com domin?ncia das esp?cies A. bicornis, Urochloa decumbens, Urochloa umidicola e Panicum maximum. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com cinco repeti??es. Os tratamentos foram o coroamento com papel?o e sem coroamento. A efici?ncia do papel?o foi monitorada atrav?s de coletas da biomassa total e do n?vel de senesc?ncia das gram?neas na ?rea coroada. A umidade, nas camadas de 0 a 5 cm e 5 a 10 cm do solo, e a temperatura, nas camadas de 0 a 2,5 cm, 2,5 a 5 cm e 5 a 10 cm do solo, foram monitorados durante per?odos de 19 e 7 dias subsequentes, respectivamente, a uma simula??o de chuva de 130 mm durante 24 hs e a chuvas naturais de 133 mm durante 13 dias. Os resultados indicaram que o tratamento 1 (coroamento com papel?o) diminuiu a velocidade de ressecamento do solo, mantendo maior teor de ?gua na ?rea da coroa em compara??o aos demais tratamentos. Ambos os tratamentos de coroamento com papel?o apresentaram temperatura do solo na regi?o da coroa at? 8,5?C menor do que no tratamento de coroamento com papel?o. O conjunto de resultados dos tr?s estudos realizados demonstram que o uso da t?cnica de coroamento com papel?o na implanta??o de reflorestamentos pode reduzir significativamente os custos operacionais ap?s o plantio, tanto pela redu??o de m?o-de-obra empregada em opera??es de coroamento, quanto pela menor necessidade de replantio de mudas.

A s?ndrome da ard?ncia bucal ? definida como uma doen?a complexa, que se caracteriza pela manifesta??o de sintomas de ard?ncia na cavidade bucal e l?bios, estando a mucosa clinicamente normal. A sua etiologia ? desconhecida, entretanto, fatores psicol?gicos, como o estresse e a ansiedade, s?o apontados como poss?veis agentes etiol?gicos. O cortisol, tamb?m conhecido como hidrocortisona, ? o principal horm?nio na modula??o do sistema de estresse, e a sua associa??o com esta s?ndrome nunca foi realizada. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar os n?veis de cortisol, estresse e ansiedade de pacientes portadores de s?ndrome de ard?ncia bucal (SAB). Foi realizado um estudo caso-controle com uma amostra constitu?da por 60 pessoas divididas em: grupo de pacientes portadores de SAB, e grupo controle. Foram realizados em todos os pacientes a anamnese, o exame f?sico, sialometria, aplica??o dos invent?rios de estresse de Lipp e de ansiedade de Beck, assim como coleta de saliva durante 3 per?odos diferentes do dia para an?lise do cortisol salivar. A an?lise dos resultados mostrou que no grupo SAB houve diferen?a estat?stica significativa no que diz respeito ? xerostomia, por?m, nenhum dos grupos apresentaram os fluxos salivares de repouso e estimulado reduzidos. N?o houve diferen?a quanto aos n?veis de ansiedade ou estresse, por?m os n?veis de cortisol salivar dos pacientes do grupo SAB foram estatisticamente maiores (p= 0,0008) quando comparados com o grupo controle. Tamb?m foi verificado que n?veis de cortisol salivar acima de 11,30nmol/L/h possuem um Odds Ratio de 4,0 [95%IC (1,37 - 11,70)]. Os resultados sugerem que os n?veis elevados de cortisol est?o associados ? presen?a da s?ndrome da ard?ncia bucal.
