Abstract:
In this work, we shall be dealing with monetary economics. More precisely, through the extensive use of the history of economic thought, we shall at first try, on the one hand, to reconstruct the path that led to the emergence of the so-called New Consensus Model and, on the other, to examine its weaknesses and limitations from a methodological point of view. Furthermore, again using the history of economic thought, we shall secondarily try, on the one hand, to reconstruct the monetary thought of Kaldor and Graziani and, on the other, to examine, again from the methodological point of view, the querelles between horizontalists and structuralists. A personal interpretation of both Kaldor and Graziani’s thought will be provided at the end of the chapters dedicated to them. Finally, some preliminary conclusions will be drawn and some possible directions for future researches will be pointed out

Paulo Gomes Gonçalves, Marcos. "Beetles and Meteorological Conditions: A Case Study." In Agrometeorology. IntechOpen, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.94517.

Full text
Abstract:
The meteorological factors study in the beetle population dynamics, as well as its association with vegetation, is of fundamental importance for understanding the variation that occurs in its population. Thus, it was reported the influence of temperature, humidity, insolation and precipitation on the beetles in general and it was presented a case study that examined the relationship between time and population fluctuation of curculionids in Mata de Cocal and an area used for crop rotation and animal grazing, in the city of Teresina, Brazil, from August 2011 to July 2012. It was verified that beetles populations certain are governed and conditioned by meteorological variables to a greater or lesser extent depending on the characteristics of the community itself and the biotic and abiotic environmental factors of the area where they live: the temperature that changes the its metabolic rate, the insolation and humidity that can affect its fertility and longevity can be cited as examples. From the case presented, It was found that the Curculionidae community has a positive association with precipitation and humidity and a negative association with insolation and temperature, being that in native forests curculionids are not as dependent on meteorological variables as in agricultural fields.

Abstract:
Twenty-two-year-old Aldo Leopold arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory, in July 1909, burning with the “fervor of a sawdust evangelist.” The Forest Service had sent him to his first choice—District 3, encompassing the twenty-one forests of the South and Southwest. His duties were outlined in his manual: preserve a perpetual supply of timber for home industries, prevent destruction of forest cover (which regulates the flow of streams), and protect local industries from unfair competition in the use of forest and range. The district chief was Arthur Ringland, a stocky, energetic Yale graduate only a few years older than Leopold. Ringland sensed the new graduate’s enthusiasm and assigned him to the wildest lands in the district—the Apache National Forest in Arizona Territory. The land had originally belonged to the Apache Nation, but in 1886, the US Army forced most of the members onto a nearby reservation. This left but a few ranchers, farmers, and miners in the region. The forest headquarters rested in Springerville, Arizona, a two-day stagecoach ride from the last railroad stop. No automobiles carved tire treads over these plateaus and canyons. Travel was by foot, horse, or mule. Forest Assistant Leopold, the newest greenhorn among many, wasted no time in purchasing a feisty gray stallion called Jiminy Hicks, a saddle, a rope, and a few good roping lessons. Within the month, he also acquired pistols and a “rubber butt plate” for those long days in the saddle. The rubber plate came in handy since Aldo put in a good deal of time astride Jiminy Hicks. Throughout July and the beginning of August, Leopold inspected trees, marked them for cutting, planted seed plots, fixed fences, and met the other rangers. Working under Supervisor John D. Guthrie, Aldo contributed his two bits on policy decisions about grazing permits, water rights, and timber sales. Guthrie’s long hours and dedicated stance inspired the young ranger. The simplicity of life on the range, where one had to live out of a pack, made Leopold feel tough and free. On his own time, he hunted, mapped out the forest for himself, climbed mountains, and tested trout streams.

Abstract:
Engineering analyses and component design studies during the period 1974–977 indicated the feasibility of constructing and operating floating OTEC plants and plantships in a variety of configurations ranging in power from 40 to 500 MWe. In August 1979, an at-sea test of a complete OTEC power system (Mini-OTEC) demonstrated performance in good accord with engineering predictions and established a firm basis for scale-up to larger sizes (Owens and Trimble, 1980). Heat exchanger operation at a level equivalent to 1-MWe power generation was demonstrated 1 year later in the OTEC-1 program. In 1981, a complete land-based OTEC power plant was constructed and operated under Japanese direction at the island of Nauru on the equator in the mid-Pacific ocean. During the period 1977-1980, a U.S. plan was developed, supported by public laws PL 96-310 and PL 96-320, to demonstrate OTEC feasibility at a 100-MWe level by 1985 and 500 MWe by 1990. Testing was to start with a pilot demonstration at 40 MWe (net). Preliminary design of baseline demonstration plants at this power level for moored operation off Punta Tuna, Puerto Rico, and for grazing operation west of equatorial Brazil with on-board ammonia production was completed in 1980 (George and Richards, 1980). Conceptual designs of larger plants and power systems for demonstration at the baseline level were also completed. In accord with the requirements of the Congressional actions, a Program Opportunity Notice (PON) was issued in September 1980 by DOE that offered cost-sharing support for innovative OTEC systems designs that contractors believed would be commercially viable if government cost sharing were made available during development of demonstration vessels. The PON asked for proposals for a development program to design, construct, and test a 40-MWe (net) closed-cycle OTEC system, which would be conducted in six phases beginning with conceptual design and continuing to preliminary design, engineering design, construction, deployment and operation, and, finally, transfer of ownership and contractor operation. The schedule was set to be consistent with the goal established by PL- 96-310 of demonstration of 100-MW OTEC operation by 1985. DOE stated its intent to fund five to eight awards for the first phase, with DOE providing $900,000 as its share of each contract awarded (Dugger et al., 1983).
