Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation seeks an answer to the following question: To what extent has the discipling ministry of The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) in Southern Africa produced disciples with a holistic perspective of the Christian mission. The specific group studied is the Coloured community found in Swaziland and South Africa. The specific period covered is from 1921-1999. After an introductory chapter which provides orientation to the subject and also gives a brief history of the founding of TEAM and of the Coloured Church called EBC (Evangelical Bible Church), TEAM's understanding of the Great Commission is evaluated in the light ofan exegetical and theological study of the Great Commission. The study shows that what is called the Great Commission cannot be arbitrarily derived from one key text such as Matthew 28: 18-20, but needs to be grasped in its total significance from the entire Bible. Matthew 28: 18-20 is treated in this study as a pivotal text which turns towards the Old Testament and the New Testament, including the context of the Gospel of Matthew itself. The conclusion of the theological study of the Great Commission, is that TEAM drastically reduced the focus to one main task - church planting, with primary emphasis on evangelism and personal salvation. In this way, the horizontal implications of the Christian mission were relegated to "support ministries" which were aimed at supporting the main task of evangelism and church planting. Thus, TEAM lacked a comprehensive theology of mission which would have connected both the vertical and horizontal aspects of its work in Southern Africa. Chapter 3 of the dissertation, describes TEAM's pioneering efforts among the Coloured people of Southern Africa. WIth the exception of their work in Swaziland, the TEAM missionaries concentrated almost exclusively on leading people to faith in Christ and establishing local churches which would function according to the principles of self propagating, self-supporting, self-governing, and self-instructing. This pioneer stage proved then that TEAM basically executed its own narrowed understanding of the task ofrnaking disciples. Added to the narrow practice of mission, was the homogeneous approach to church planting, which accommodated itself to the segregationist policies of the government, and produced three segregated denominations - all the offspring of TEAM. Chapter 4 of this study shows that TEAM missionaries and other key missionaries from what was called South Africa General Mission (SAGM), entrenched the onesided approach to the Christian mission in three Bible colleges which played a leading role in training Coloured leaders for the ministry. It was simply a matter of time before the nationals themselves reproduced what they had learned at TEAM-related colleges in their own efforts of church planting which were viewed as the fulfilment of the Christian mission. This national effort by key nationals in EBC, forms the substance of chapter 5 of the dissertation. Chapter 6 of this study discusses the road ahead for both TEAM and EBC. It focuses on six crucial matters: The need for thanksgiving for the good which has been done; the need for confession for failures in theology and practice; the need to formulate a holistic theology of mission; the need for practice consistent with a holistic theology which would assist TEAM and EBC in reconciling both the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the Great Commission; the need to practise the principles of unity and mission, and finally, the need for evaluation of TEAM's Relational Reconfiguration in order to determine what can be done to promote better relationships between TEAM and the TEAM-related churches.

The beauty industry is approaching saturation, so to thrive in an environment of increased competition, it must be creative and find novel ways of creating more business opportunities. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential of strategic alliances between the beauty industry and luxury condominiums. We started our research by collecting data on how the beauty industry has developed and evolved, and analyzing the contributing factors and classifications of strategic alliances. We also studied successful examples of strategic alliances, both domestic and international, of beauty as well as other industries. We assessed what made these alliances succeed and using the information to inform our research. Finally, we engaged a sample of luxury condominiums in Kaohsiung to test our thesis. Using qualitative research, we interviewed one luxury condominium builder and three luxury condominium residents in Kaohsiung. Interviews consisted of a general background discussion, from which 14 questions were derived covering four topics: (1) ideal/expectation; (2) quality of life; (3) needs for beauty services; (4) feasibility of alliance between beauty industry and luxury condominium. The 14 questions were reviewed by experts and consolidated into a 10-question formal interview questionnaire. The research results presented are based on responses to the formal interview questionnaire conducted with the same four interviewees previously involved. The study reveals that both luxury condominium residents and builders believe in the feasibility of a strategic alliance between the beauty industry and luxury condominiums. However, further exploration of required public space facilities, environmental considerations, and alliance models and structures are needed before the proposed strategic alliances can occur and flourish. We hope this study will help broaden the beauty industry’s horizons, inspire new business opportunities, and rejuvenate the economic miracle that is the beauty industry. We also hope that the beauty industry can partner with luxury condominiums so that both industries can share complementary resources and create a win-win relationship.

As severe market competition and unending change for environment, the growth of the online game industry across the Strait has slowed down in recent years. Hence enterprises need to identify their operating strategies to allocate their resources effectively and develop innovation in order to strengthen their competition advantage. Furthermore, both Taiwan and China inherit Chinese culture; they should work actively more and hand in hand by strategic alliances, to lower costs, enhance operating efficiency and promote profitability. Although strategic alliances can bring profits to enterprises, how to choose strategic alliance partners appropriately has become an important issue for many businesses. Thus, taking the greater China’s online game industry for an example, this study selected 14 online game companies from Taiwan and 7 from China as the research samples; their current assets, operating expenses and operating costs were set as the input items, moreover, operating income and after-tax net profit were set as the output items. All the data were collected from the annual financial statements of the respective companies. By using the Malmquist Productivity Index model in the Data Envelopment Analysis, the study aims to help administrators of online game companies identify suitable partners for future strategic alliances. The research results showed that the original companies which had good operating performance was uncertain to generate better results after strategic alliances. It indicated that the company of better operating performance about competition may be decreased instead of improved after strategic alliances. Conversely, in case companies that had poor operating performance may show a substantial performance boost after strategic alliances. It indicated that a company with poor operating performance could promote its overall competitiveness through strategic alliances. When implementing strategic alliances, if only adjusting the input and output items properly, business administrators will be able to analyze and assess suitable alliance partners per research method and establishment process in this study, and then to obtain better performance for enterprises.
Von, Hlatky Udvarhelyi Stéfanie. "The great asymmetry : America's closest allies in times of war." Thèse, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/3654.
Full textThis dissertation focuses on military cooperation between the United States and its special allies. It argues that alliance expectations determine the level of military cooperation, while two intervening variables - the level of government cohesion and military capabilities - determine its implementation. This study also shows how secondary states deploy strategies to overcome power asymmetries through bilateral concessions, international organizations and by appealing to principle. The focus of the research is on special allies, as they have the most to gain or lose by going along with American plans. My contention is that secondary allies can rarely influence the dominant ally decisively, but they can act autonomously and resist to pressures exerted by the stronger alliance partner. The argument builds on three central claims. First, power asymmetries between allies translate into different assessments of international threats. Second, when disagreements over threats arise, the outcome of intra-alliance bargaining is not necessarily dictated by the preferences of the stronger power. Third, secondary states, as opposed to the dominant partner, face unique constraints when facing major foreign policy decisions, i.e. they face a trade-off between establishing a credible reputation as an alliance partner in a politically feasible way while minimizing domestic audience costs. To examine the theoretical puzzle presented by asymmetric military cooperation, I introduce a causal explanation that builds on neoclassical realism, to zone in on the interaction between systemic and domestic variables. My research makes a contribution to alliance theory and foreign policy decision-making by studying how special allies respond to American decisions in times of threat and how systemic constraints are channeled through state-level variables. To investigate the causal link between threat perception, alliance expectations and domestic constraints, this study relies on the method of structured focused comparison with three detailed case studies. The focus is on the initial decision made by special allies regarding whether or not to participle in joint mobilization with the United States. The decision-making process is presented from the perspective of secondary allied states and measures the explanatory factors that motivated the decision on military cooperation. The case studies are the UK, Canada and Australia’s response to the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq during the period of 2001 to 2003.
