The gulf dividing the houses of ruling elites from those in use among the bulk of a population (here referred to as vernacular) is a phenomenon common to many cultures. It reflects the close correlation between the kind of house in which an individual lives and his social status. A grasp of the relationship, between elite and vernacular houses in societies where both exist enhances our understanding of the development of domestic architecture, and our appreciation of the wider historical significance of that development. Malay heritage carvings were heavily influenced by Hindu-Buddhist culture before the dissemination of Islam. This is evidenced by the paintings of mythical animals and floral motifs found on archaeological objects in Lembah Bujang. The arrival of Islam in Malaya in the 14th century finally brought great changes in the world of carving, including in Terengganu and Kelantan. This study aimed to identify the initial motifs used after the dissemination of Islam in Malaya. The states of Kelantan and Terengganu were chosen because most of the old houses and skilled woodcarvers were born there and ar

Tokyo had two fantastic chances to rebuild its urban areas based on ideal city planning. Unfortunately, it failed to take them. The first chance was after the Great Kanto Earthquake, which leveled Tokyo in 1923. The second chance was just after World War II, when the US Air Force flattened Tokyo with a carpet bombing that left 330,665 citizens dead, 2,316,325 houses burned to the ground, and a deserted area of 40,000,000 ha. The Tokyo metropolitan authorities failed again, mostly due to the desperate living conditions during the postwar occupation. Tokyo was therefore hastily and haphazardly r

In the mining town of Redeyef (south-western Tunisia), “modern” homes and building techniques bear the signs of a history of marginalization, inequality, and lack of resources. Here, power produced specific mode of living and territorial organization. The article will describe three different homes: the little studio I lived in between 2014 and 2015 during my fieldwork research, the “mansion” that a young man living in Redeyef had been erecting for himself, and the house a man erected for his son. These examples will help to shed light on the extent to which the colonial past, the political ec

AbstractEnsuring good environmental conditions of the poultry houses can be costly for the farmers, but without it losses due to poor bird health and performance due to poor air quality can be much more detrimental to net returns. The goal of this study was to investigate the variations in air quality in various areas inside the laying hen houses. Ten houses with laying hen conventional battery cages were measured for O2, H2S, CO, NH3, temperature, relative humidity, CO2, airflow and luminance. The results of the physical measures showed that temperatures in the houses were between 15.31–25.6°

Manufacture and movement of pottery has a complex and changing history in the ancestral pueblo region. By the time great houses were being built in the Chaco sphere, four wares were in use and some areas were supplying large quantities of pots to the sites in Chaco Canyon. Widespread stylistic trends indicate mechanisms of communication and shared ideals over a huge area. Ceramics are an index of how large quantities of everyday items were transported more than 60 km to Chaco.
