Abstract:
In this paper we will shed some light on the sanitary and health conditions of Imperial Habsburg armies in Hungary during the Great Turkish War (1683-1699). Early modern warfare was quite deadly for soldiers; they had equal or greater chance to succumb to illness then to get killed in combat. The war that was fought on vast expanses of the Pannonian Basin was especially deadly in this regard; all logistical and sanitary deficiencies of the Imperial troops (that were quite typical for the armies of the era in question) were exacerbated, which led to prolonged and intensive suffering of men in t

After more than a century of expansion, the Ottoman advance into HungarianCroatian territory was finally halted during the Long Turkish War of 1593-1606, i.e., after the conclusion of the Peace of Zsitvatorok in 1606. From that moment onward, the border zone between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire became more stable and did not endure major territorial changes until the beginning of the Great Vienna War of 1683-1699. However, although no major territorial shifts occurred until the 1680s, there was still some territorial adjustments on both opposing sides. Even though such changes

Abstract The Great Turkish War, which began with the Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1683, ended sixteenth years later with substantial territorial gains for the Habsburgs and their allies, greatly diminishing the European domains of the Ottoman Empire. This protracted struggle also occasioned an influx into Europe of Türkenbeute, Ottoman manuscripts and artefacts with considerable consequences for European scholarship.
