Abstract:
A war of history and memory over the Great Patriotic War (WWII) between the Soviet Union and Germany has been raging in Vladimir Putin’s Russia for almost two decades. Putin’s Kremlin deploys all of the mythmaking machinery at its disposal to correct narratives that demonize the Soviet Union and reflect badly on post-Soviet Russia. Victory Day, celebrated annually on 9 May with parades, concerts, films, theatre, art, and music, plays a crucial role in disseminating the Kremlin’s counter narratives.

Abstract:
Presented are results of a sociological study (qualitative comparative analysis of in-depth interviews) in the historical memory of Kyrgyzstan young citizens as one of participating states of Eurasian integration, namely, their ideas about World War II and formation of historical memory, as well as understanding and interpretation of integration processes between countries of NIS. For the Soviet Union citizens, the victory in World War II was not just a socio-historical milestone. Social time is a key element in formation of historical memory. It is interesting how the social time of historical events can be interpreted quite subjectively in a given community. Since the Victory was the most important event in the history of the Soviet Union, it can be assumed that historical memory of the war serves as a social link of integration processes. Therefore, the study of descendants historical memory of the victors in the Great Patriotic War becomes an interesting and scientifically urgent task. The specificity of this study was the methodology based on the use of a qualitative comparative analysis of results of in-depth interviews of Kyrgyzstan young citizens. More than 400 persons were interviewed using a non-random sample, and no less than 50 informants from each group, selected by the snowball method. The empirical object of research is the youth of the Kyrgyzstan Republic, belonged to the generation of “millennials” and “postmillennials” (18–38 years old). The historical memory of the Great Victory is largely connected with today’s ideas about the Eurasian integration of the NIS. Although it would seem that the content of the social memory of young people does not have a direct impact on the process of Eurasian integration, but as a potential force, it can spontaneously manifest itself in public life, or under certain conditions and the presence of an organized force, it can be included in the socio-political discourse.

Abstract:
The victory of Christianity in the last years of Constantine's was graphically described by Eusebius of Caesarea in his Life of Constantine. Clearly in Phoenicia, where he had excellent sources of reign information, the heart had gone out of the old religion. Every class in the community was prepared to accept Christianity and even to deride the deities that once they had held in awe. The victory there and ultimately over nearly the whole empire was so decisive that one is inclined to forget the tremendous struggle for the hearts and allegiances of the provincials that preceded it. Though in retrospect one might agree with von Harnack's view that even without Constantine's conversion Christianity would have triumphed, this was not how it appeared to most contemporaries. Down to the time of his victory over Licinius (September 324), Constantine seems to have aimed only at securing for Christianity the legal equality with the traditional cults, as envisaged by the Edict of Milan. The Council of Nicaea, however, summoned by the emperor in 325, proved to be decisive both for the establishment of orthodoxy and the victory of Christianity itself. Thenceforth, the history of the empire would also be the history of the Church.

Abstract:
Pindar's Eighth Olympian celebrates the victory of Alkimedon of Aigina in the boys' wrestling at Olympia in 460. This victory was the sixth won by a member of this family (line 76). The absence of detail about most of these victories suggests that the family had had little success in the great Panhellenic competitions and that the majority were won at minor festivals. However, one of the remaining five victories was certainly won in one of the four festivals which made up the periodos. In lines 15–18, after preparatory generalizations about the diversity of paths to achievement, all with divine aid, Pindar describes the path of achievement, and the source of divine aid, which features in the victor's family:Tιμ⋯σθενες, ὕμμε δ' ⋯κλ⋯ρωσεν π⋯τμοςZην⋯ γενεθλ⋯ωι. Timosthenes, in your case fate allotted you to Zeus as your family god, who made you pre-eminent at Nemea and Alkimedon Olympic victor by the Hill of Kronos.

Abstract:
Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were two successor states of the Austro-Hungarian empire at great pains in the interwar period to portray themselves, both domestically and internationally, as ‘victor states’ of the First World War, even though both states inherited societies that were deeply fractured by the experience of war. The symbol of the pro-Entente war volunteer was an important part of both states’ interwar cultures of victory. Such volunteers represented just a fraction of war veterans in both countries, but they were given great prominence in their respective state-forming cultures. This article is a study of the origins and the nature of this important entanglement. It begins by defining the problematic nature of the ‘culture of victory’ in the region, before going on to explore the common origins of the volunteer movements in the wartime pro-Entente émigré groups. It then moves on to a discussion of consequences of the privileging of volunteer veterans in the institutional, political, and commemorative cultures of the two states.

Abstract:
Purpose. The 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War is celebrated in Russia in 2020. This article focuses on the research activities of Academician A. P. Okladnikov, whose mission during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 was to study Yakutia’s ancient history. Results. Yakutia is located in the north-eastern part of Siberia. It is the largest administrative and territorial subject of Russia (3,083,523 square kilometers or 1,190,555 square mile) with a great natural economic and resource potential. The Soviet period in the history of the region is associated with its large-scale development. A. P. Okladnikov’s research initiated the systematic study of Yakutia’s ancient history. His research was conducted during the hardest time for Russia, the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. Back in 1939, a well-known young scientist, who had earned a PhD and was the author of several discoveries in Siberia and Central Asia, received an invitation from the Institute of Culture under the Council of People’s Commissars of the Yakut ASSR to do archaeological research in the Lena River valley. During the following six years his life was devoted to ancient Yakutia. Conclusion. The monumental task of writing the history of this region was fully implemented. The studies of A. P. Okladnikov are appreciated locally by the State and internationally by the scientific community. The scientist was awarded the medal “For Valiant Labour during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945” and two “Badge of Honor” orders. His scientific ideas are so fundamental that are still highly regarded by students, colleagues and modern researchers.

Abstract:
The current situation in the world draws public attention to the problems of building the armed forces and keeping their readiness to provide defense and security of the country. Rigid centralization of military construction in such collective bodies as the State Defense Committee, the General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander, determination and meticulous work of folk commissioners and the General Staff to identify areas of building and resource mobilization for the implementation of decisions taken can serve as a guide for solving similar problems in our days. Balanced development of the armed forces, technical equipment of modern weapons, timely replacement of losses, creation and transfer of reserves, training in a rigid time limit - it is not a complete list of the problems of military development, which made the success and victory in the war possible. On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory in this war it is not only important not to forget about the titanic work done, dedication and heroism of the older generation of our compatriots, the generation of victors, but also to reflect on the acute problems of the present, in order to be worthy of the glory of our ancestors and preserve their honor to future generations of Russians.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the symbolic politics of three pro-state movements that emerged from the “preventive counterrevolution” launched by the Kremlin in response to Ukraine’s Orange Revolution. In 2005, youth movement Nashi played upon war memory at its rallies and branded the opposition “fascist”; in 2012, the Anti-Orange Committee countered opposition protests with mass gatherings at Moscow’s war commemoration sites; in 2015, Antimaidan brought thousands onto Russia’s streets to denounce US-backed regime change and alleged neo-Nazism in Kiev. I show how evocation of the enemy image, through reference to the war experience, played a key role in the symbolism of the preventive counterrevolution. Interviews with activists in these movements discussing their symbolic politics reveal an opposing victim/victor narrative based on an interplay of two World War II myths—the “Great Victory” and the “fascist threat.” Moving beyond approaches that view the Soviet and Russian World War II cult as a triumphalist narrative of the Great Victory over fascism, I conclude that its threat component is an understudied element.

Abstract:
The author reviews several projects devoted to the heroism of Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War. She characterizes the virtual projects, i. e. the project by TASS IA – “The Great Patriotic War through the eyes of Soviet journalists. TASS presents the frontline reports and newspaper articles of 1945” (January 19 – May 16, 1945); series of articles by Udmurtia information agency (covering the period of January 30, 1942 – May 9, 1945 as presented in the newspapers). The author compares these two projects to the NAB project “One hundred days before the Great Victory. Belarus newspapers in 1945” (January 30 – May 9, 1945) by the goals, contents and depth, and completion. The projects follow the day chronicle on the verge of the Victory, demonstrate the heroism of people in the front and behind the lines, and use information potential of historical newspapers. The author also characterizes the project by Gomel V. I. Lenin Regional Universal Library “The Victory Echo” (May 9, 1945–2020) and the joint multimedia project by Belarus Telegraph Agency and Belarus State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War: “The Victory chronicle: The living need the memory…” This experience can be used for designing similar virtual projects and other digital information resources.

Abstract:
This article identifies the content and structural features of social and media communication of Runet users in relation to the information presence of Sevastopol in the construction of the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War. An interdisciplinary approach is used to fully implement the goal and objectives of the research being conducted. Media and information spaces cybermetry intrinsic to modern sociology make it possible to identify new trends in the formation of unconventional historical attitudes about the Great Victory, including the presence of Sevastopol in the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War. The use of the social media monitoring system "Medialogia" enabled an analysis of information flows about the Great Patriotic War and the role of Sevastopol in the Great Victory. The results of the study can contribute to the development of a guide aimed at intensifying the activities in the field of formation of the historical memory of the Great Victory. The authors believe that it will positively affect the consistent upholding of Russia's historical victories and their preservation in the modern digital space by shaping the agenda and managing information flows in the context of the ideological confrontation of the main world actors.

Abstract:
After Victory appeared in the spring of 2001, in what now seems like a different era. The book looks at the great postwar moments – 1815, 1919, 1945, and the end of the Cold War – when the ‘old order’ is swept away and newly powerful states shape a ‘new order’. In this essay, I offer reflections on After Victory’s arguments about the character and evolution of international order in the modern era, American hegemonic order in the 20th century, and the logic of institutions and strategic restraint. I explore the theoretical debates that it engaged and triggered. The essay looks at how the book’s arguments stand up to the face of more recent developments – the Bush administration’s Iraq War, the rise of China, the American ‘empire debate’, and the Trump administration’s radical assault on the post-1945 liberal international order.

Abstract:
The publication deals with the International Russian-Uzbek research and practice conference “75 Years of the Great Victory – Common Victory – Common Memory”. Based on the conference materials, the author of the publication analyses approaches of the scientific community representatives of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Uzbekistan to assessing the common contribution of our countries to the victory over fascism. The speakers focused on discussing such topical issues as the historiography of the Great Patriotic War in Uzbekistan, coverage of the Great Patriotic War in foreign historiography, new educational approaches to teaching the history of the Great Patriotic War in higher and secondary educational institutions, using the memories of evacuees as a historical source, etc. The author emphasises that all the speakers expressed concern about the strengthening of modern trends to “falsify the history” of the Great Patriotic War and World War II and indicated, in that regard, the need for careful attitude towards the history of the events of 1939–1945 and the importance of preserving the historical memory of them. An idea was also expressed at the conference that a great responsibility falls on the shoulders of scientific community representatives now, since the community’s main task is to preserve the memory of the courage and heroism of all the soldiers who fought against fascism, without distinction of nationality. During the discussion, interesting proposals were made for cooperation in the field of historical knowledge, educational activities, as well as in the promotion of joint educational projects by Russia and Uzbekistan.

Purpose of research. In the present context of informational confrontation between Russian Federation and the Western world, some social actors are trying to monetize, understate or distort the results of the World War II by using the latest information and communication technologies in order to form and nurture future generations. Given the situation, for the benefit of prosperous development of Russian society it is necessary to identify the value aspects of ensuring the Victory. The heirs of the “liberation soldiers” should thought of the Victory as the greatest value, preserve the memory of it and pass it to their children. The falsifications of the Great Victory should be challenged with its understanding as the value of pan-unity, seamlessly including Truth, Goodness and Beauty. Conclusion. As a result of research the author arrives at a conclusion that in the context of the development of modern information confrontation, it becomes necessary to counteract the influence of destructive technologies of discrediting the Great Victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany, which author understands as an integrated value that helps to unite Russian society, find a common language for mutual understanding for people of different beliefs and political views, pursue traditional values and the most significant social guidelines.

Abstract:
The contours of the image of the Great Patriotic War and the Victory formed in the post-war 20th century laid the content of the “matrix” of Russian historical memory. The strengthening trend of national and state-oriented policy of historical memory actualizes addressing the genesis of this image and commemorative (traditions, rituals, symbols). In the USSR, the tool for creating and promoting technologies of commemorative practices, preserving and transmitting the memory of the Great Patriotic War to society was newspapers highly demanded by the Soviet population. The article analyzes the materials published in 1946–1965 in central, regional, and local newspapers (“Pravda”, “Ural’skii rabochii”, “Sovetskaya Sibir′” and “Magnitogorskii Metall”). The use of content and discourse analysis methods made it possible to identify the dynamics in the presentation of the Victory image on the pages of the press: from a chaotic festive extravaganza to a “cultural” recreation of citizens and ritualized practices (laying wreaths, holding concerts, exhibitions). The paper also captures the changes caused by a change in the political situation, a decrease in the intensity of the company, aimed at the labor mobilization of the Soviet society. The 1946–1965 newspapers of various levels reveal the specifics in the coverage of the Victory theme: the central newspapers published more theoretical materials on this topic, while the regional and factory newspapers more often covered practices dedicated to this date (labor, holiday).
