Full textThis study aims at exploring the relationships between land property and the various types of urbanization in greece along the sea-shore, a special attention being given to the spatial, economic and social conditions in which that process takes place. The first part is a critical analysis of the public policies set up to make possible the financing of the branch of tourism. It also studies the national pattern of regional planning which exists in the country. Finally, il shows their common influence upon the spatial extension of tourism at the nation-wide level. The second part is a case study of the touristic urbanization in the island of rhodes. The diachronic data gathered about the way land is being transferred between persons in three resort centers along the shore give important clues about the variety of methods wich are being used by landowners as the urban pressure goes on. Drawing upon the preceding analyses, the third part of the study tries to show how the various modes of touristic urbanization in rhodes island are submitted to more general conditions of the production of land rent as landowners and business confront themselves to each other so as to exploit this rend with the best possible conditions. The study of the socio-economical functions of land property on the one side, and the local geographical caracteristics on the other, suggest strong hypotheses for explaining the way one may see the touristic amenities develop and spread in the island

Full textThis research aims at investigating the dynamics of Rhodian trade in the western Mediterranean Sea through archaeological evidence. In particular, it refers to the trade of wine produced on the island of Rhode and transported in amphorae which, as of the III century, were stamped. These stamps (two on each amphora, one belonging to the eponym and the other one to the fabricant) make it possible to date the object, and therefore the context in which it was found, fairly precisely, and form the basis for our analysis. As a matter of fact, collecting all the published evidence of Rhodian stamps found in Italy (on the mainland and the islands), Gaul, Spain and Tunisia and studying the historical and economical context of these regions has allowed to advance some hypotheses on the dynamics related to the import of Rhodian amphorae in the western Mediterranean Sea. As to Gaul, a catalogue was produced including unpublished Rhodian amphorae stamps from the excavations in Marseille

Guidi, Andreas. "Youth and generations between two empires. Changing sociabilities from Ottoman to Italian rule in Rhodes." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH081.
Full textIn the early twentieth century, the urban setting of Rhodes was characterized by the coexistence ofOrthodox, Muslims, Jews and Catholics. In 1912, this Ottoman provincial center was occupied by Italy. After the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the Italian military occupation changed to a civil administration, and Rhodes became a protectorate of the Fascist state. The historiography has dealt with this settingeither by focusing on one confessional community, or on governmental structures, tending to see the lateOttoman and the Italian administration as two mutually exclusive objects of analysis. This dissertationoffers a more inclusive approach through the combination of sources of different origin, type, andlanguage. Situated at the crossroad of social and cultural history, the narrative is centered on lifetrajectories of individuals belonging to all confessions and their encounter with institutions from Ottomanto Italian rule. Next to changes in institutions and practices of governance, several innovations related tospaces and forms of socialization are observable in this period. This dissertation investigates such doublelevel of change through a perspective inspired by studies in social sciences about generations and youth. In other words, the study focuses on practices of demarcation and circulation of resources between thegenerations of a family. Additionally, figurations expanding outside the boundaries of a family – schools, associations, parties, etc. – but reflecting such generational interplay are taken into account. Since formost families children socialized differently from their parents, local institutions were concerned aboutregulating this divergence. The corresponding communalization and statalization of resources are trendspersisting, with different modalities and motives, from the Ottoman to the Italian period. This processaimed at domesticating forms of sociability, and it relied on evoking “youth” as the object of thisdomestication. Thus, the term “youth” served the purpose of prescribing norms of behavior andlegitimizing institutional intervention in regulating the management of resources
Badoud, Nathan.
The dissertation consists of two distinct parts. One tackles the chronology of Rhodian inscriptions ; the other focuses on the lex Rhodia de iactu (Digest 14. 2). 1. Some 4800 Rhodian inscriptions have been published so far. Their chronology, which had been built in the first half of the XXth century and is widely accepted today, deserved to be thought through again. On the one hand, it was necessary to explain how the city of Rhodes and the communities which make it up – Ialysos, Kamiros, Lindos – have acculturated the time through various social institutions such as the calendar and the tribal-cycles. On the other hand, two sorts of documents had to be dated : the catalogues of the magistrates which form series of diachronically opposed names, and numerous lists of synchronically associated names. Located on the axis of time, these documents form a scale to which several hundreds of other inscriptions, coins and amphora stamps may be related, through palaeographic, linguistic and prosopographic clues. 2. In this part, I study philologically, juridically, and historically the lex Rhodia de iactu. I prove the authenticity of the ten extracts of the classical jurisprudence which form the lex and I explain their arrangement. The first eight extracts permit to establish the Roman doctrine of general average, the antiquity and Greek roots of which are demonstrated. The study of the ninth extract allows us to identify several clauses of Rhodian maritime law and to understand how it could be integrated in the Roman law

Full textAt the centre of the investigation is the nature of Roman rule upon cities which possessed a long tradition of self-government and administration. Part I is a survey of judiciary structures in the provinces of Asia and Achaia. Part II deals with the division of judicial task between roman authorities and civic governments. Part III is concerned with the provincial litigants’ attitude towards a pyramidal system and the grounds of voluntary applications to Roman courts. Roman rule appears as a pragmatic one, which claims as a part of its sovereignty criminal jurisdiction and all cases related to Roman citizens, but otherwise concedes a large autonomy to local courts. Cities’ judiciary organization is largely inherited from the hellenistic period, although oligarchical institutions tend to supplant popular justice

Full textThis work deals with the influence of Euripides over the greek authors - poets and writers - of the Hellenistic era and the High Empire. In the first section, we examine the literary motives (expressive and thematic) borrowed from Euripides by three poets, Sositheus, Theocritus and Apollonius of Rhodes, representing very clearly three kinds of literature : the drama, the epic poetry and the idyll. In the second section, we analyse on the one hand the judgement throughout the whole literary work of Euripides by Longinus, Dio Chrysostom, Plutarch of Chaironeia and Lucian of Samosata ; on the other hand we deal with the distribution and the manipulation of references to the poet into the same writers : by projecting certain reflections of Euripides' theatre over different aspects of human life, they enlighten moral and political values. However, Plutarch does not deny the qualities of artistic creation of dramatizing, as the power of the tragic images. Lucian is distinguished by his choice to exploit the Euripides' references in a comic text of a parodic aim

In the first part of this doctoral thesis archaeological materials and documents from old excavations in the Greek site of the Citadel in Roses are revised. Comparative and global investigation is carried out between information provided by old excavations and that coming from the more recent ones. The results help to put forward a site periodisation from the Rhode massaliot colony foundation, during the 4th century up to the ending of the village in 195 BC.
Topographic and urban aspects as well as studies of the buildings are presented. The second half of the study analyzes the production of the pottery workshops (black varnishes, light pastes, kitchenware and other secondary productions). A new classification system is presented which is based on both morphological and chronological studies and their territorial similarities. Workshops installation, their ovens, their capacity, clays and claypits are examined.
The paper is finished with a description of socioeconomic and historic aspects of the village and the historical traits concerning the foundation phases, their development and final stages.
