Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article presents an English translation and analysis of a new historical fragment, probably from Dexippus’Scythica, published by Gunther Martin and Jana Grusková in 2014. The fragment, preserved in a palimpsest in the Austrian National Library, describes a Gothic attack on Thessalonica and the subsequent preparations of the Greeks to repel the barbarian force as it moved south into Achaia. The new text provides several important details of historical, prosopographical and historiographical significance, which challenge both our existing understanding of the events in Greece during the reign of Gallienus and the reading of the main literary sources for this period. In this article we look to secure the Dexippan authorship of the fragment, identify the individuals named in the text, and date the events described in the text to the early 260sa.d.

Abstract:
The lower Upper Cretaceous clastic lithologies of the Pindos Zone in western Greece document a phase of enhanced tectonism. They are preserved as mixed carbonate/siliciclastic turbidite associations alternating with deep-marine siliceous sediments. New faunal and sedimentological data recovered from these deposits hint at two major pulses of turbidite shedding commencing at the change from the Early to the Middle Cenomanian and in the Late Turonian. The deposits are organized in generally thin clastic packages that can be attributed to lower fan facies. Different sources are likely for the occurrences in the central Pindos Mountains, the western and the easternmost Péloponnèse.

Abstract:
We examine the structure of the southern faulted margin of Geraneia Mountains, controlled by two marginal faults, namely the Loutraki and Kakia Skala Faults, which have been active in the Quaternary; however, Holocene activity on these structures has not been verified. Structural observations at the probable overlap zone between these two faults, suggest that they became soft-linked, or linkage ended at its early stage, before activity migrated basinwards, with consequent footwall backtilt. The affinity of the kinematics in the accommodation zone with the present-day extensional stress field might hint at possible Late Quaternary activity on these two major faults.

Bocksberger, Sophie Marianne. "Telamonian Ajax : a study of his reception in Archaic and Classical Greece." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:a9bacb2a-7ede-4603-9e6a-bf7f492332ed.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a systematic study of the representations of Telamonian Ajax in archaic and classical Greece. Its aim is to trace, examine, and understand how and why the constitutive elements of his myth evolved in the way they did in the long chain of its receptions. Particular attention is paid to the historical, socio-cultural and performative contexts of the literary works and visual representations I analyse as well as to the audience for which these were produced. The study is divided into three parts, each of which reflects a different reality in which Ajax has been received (different with respect to time, place, or literary genre). Artistic representations of the hero, as well as his religious dimension and political valence, are consistently taken into account throughout the thesis. The first part - Ajax from Salamis - focuses on epic poetry, and thus investigates the Panhellenic significance of the hero (rather than his reception in a particular place). It treats the entire corpus of early Greek hexameter poetry that has come down to us in written form as the reception of a common oral tradition which each poem has adapted for its own purpose. I establish that in the larger tradition of the Trojan War, Ajax was a hero characterised by his gift of invulnerability. Because of this power, he is the figure who protects his companions - dead or alive - par excellence. However, this ability probably also led him to become over-confident, and, accordingly, to reject Athena's support on the battlefield. Hence, the goddess's hostility towards him, which she demonstrated by making him lose the reward of apioteia (Achilles' arms). His defeat made Ajax so angry that he became mad and committed suicide. I also show how this traditional Ajax has been adapted to fit into the Iliad's own aesthetics. The second part - Ajax in Aegina - concentrates on the reception of Ajax in the victory odes of Pindar and Bacchylides for Aeginetan patrons. I argue that in the first part of the fifth century, Ajax becomes a figure imbued with a strong political dimension (especially with regard to the relationship between Athens and Aegina). Accordingly, I show how the presence of Ajax in Pindar's and Bacchylides' poems is often politically charged, and significant within the historical context. I discuss the influence this had on his representation. Finally, the third part moves to Athens, as I consider Ajax's reception during three distinct periods: the sixth century, the first half of the fifth century, and finally the rest of the classical period. I equally insist on the political dimension of the figure. I demonstrate that his figure undergoes a shift of paradigm in the early fifth century, which deeply affects his representation. By following in the footsteps of Ajax, this study prompts a series of reflections and comments on each of the works in which the hero features as well as on the relationship of these works to the historical context in which they were produced.

Abstract:
Hospital Information Systems (HIS) are considering a significant aspect for supporting health care professionals in their work. However, a large number of them are often poor to provide the needed information for accomplishing various work activities in the oriented environment. The aim of this research is to address users’-Administrators and Clinicians- perceptions in order to gain a deeper knowledge about problems they encounter with daily work performed through IS. Additionally, the scope is extended into formulating suggestions through the employment of Soft System Methodology (SSM) that could bring improvements. A qualitative interpretive method with an inductive analysis was followed. Data collection completed through focus group interview sessions and the adoption of SSM three activities in order to acquire the complexity of the problem situation.   Research findings revealed that despite IS Lisora serves as a tool for supporting users work operations, it causes significant problems in their daily operations since the information flow are not feasible. Thus, the research study suggests five feasible and desirable improvements that could improve the overall processes followed by the hospital’s users and bring improvements. In all, SSM was proved to be very efficient in identifying problems that exist. In this way proposed solutions to the problems were enlightened. The general hospital of Preveza shall benefit from the higher efficiency offered by the system, which in turn shall improve the quality of health-care services offered.

Abstract:
The Annales of the Roman poet, Quintus Ennius, was not an isolated example of an historical epic. Other poets before Ennius' time had written epics of various types, and different sorts of poems that dealt with historical or national material, and some of these influenced Ennius. This study will consider Ennius' relationship to the Homeric epics, and show how he imitated them in form and style. The writings of other Greek poets who preceded Ennius will be examined to determine whether they might also have influenced the Roman poet. The works of the two Roman poets who wrote before Ennius will be looked at, and some observations made about other historical materials that may have been available for the poet to use in his work. Finally, the place of Quintus Ennius and his Annales in the historiography of Rome will be discussed. The Annales seems to have been unique in that it was an epic poem which encompassed the whole history of the Roman people from the earliest times right down to the period in which the poet lived. Other poets before Ennius had dealt with some aspects of their cities' backgrounds, including mythological and legendary material. Ennius was the first to combine ancient legends and more recent history into one coherent epic poem, his Annales.

Abstract:
This thesis explores Pindar's relationship to his audiences. Part One demonstrates how his victory odes take into account an audience present at their premiere performance and also secondary audiences throughout space and time. It argues that getting the most out of the epinicians involves simultaneously assuming the perspectives of both their initial and subsequent audiences. Part Two describes how Pindar uses his audiences' knowledge of other lyric to situate his work both within an immanent poetic history and within a contemporary poetic culture. It sets out Pindar's vision of the literary world past and present and suggests how this framework shapes an audience's experience of his work. Part Three explains how Pindar's victory odes made lucid sense as linear unities to fifth-century Greeks imbued in the traditions of choral lyric. An annotated text shows how each sentence in the epinician corpus forms part of a coherent chain of rational discourse.

Abstract:
Claudio Magris is deeply interested in the classics and Greek culture. The current essay focuses on Magris and Greece through employing two different approaches. On the one hand, it highlights Magris’ interest in Greek culture, art and literature. In his works, Magris reflects on the diachronic presence of classical heroes, such as Ulysses or Antigone, within the broader field of world literature. On the other, this essay aims to analysing the reception of Magris’ translations in Greece, including the literary criticism of his works.

Abstract:
The book is about Eleftherios Venizelos, the great Greek leader of the modern period, his achievements and personality. It addresses Greek nationalism, political leadership, and Venizelos's influence on Greek history and politics. He dominated Greece from 1910 to 1936. He worked for the expansion of Greek territory to include as many Greek communities as possible (the 'Great Idea'). Also for reform and modernization of Greek institutions, a more just society, and to bring Greece closer to western Europe. The author describes his charisma, liberalism, and decisive role in the constitutional and political reforms of his early administrations, leading to the Balkan Wars in which Greece's territory and population were almost doubled. A second volume will deal with the First World War, the division of the country into hostile Venizelist and anti-Venizelist camps in the so-called national schism, the Asia Minor catastrophe and Venizelos's subsequent career. The author states his personal interest, symbolized by the British Embassy Athens, formerly Venizelos's house, where he served as British ambassador.

Abstract:
The chapter traces Rome’s involvement in Greece and Philip’s growing military strength, including his alliance with Hannibal of Carthage in the Second Punic War against Rome. Rome’s first clash in Greece against Macedonia—the First Macedonian War—is recounted, and then events leading to the more fateful Second Macedonian War, which involved Athens on Rome’s side against Philip, culminating in Philip’s defeat in battle by Rome. Punitive measures against Macedonia are discussed, heralding the demise of Philip to Rome, and then the so-called Roman proclamation of Greek freedom by the general Flamininus and what it meant for the Greeks and more ominously, Rome. That Rome could do this demonstrates Rome’s power in the Greek world.

Abstract:
British government and public views were important to Venizelos in promoting Greek aims and exploiting the sympathy of liberal quarters in Britain. The Anglo-Hellenic League, founded in 1913 by Professor Ronald Burrows and other sympathizers with the aim of promoting the 'just claims and honor of Greece' was a useful means of propaganda. Venizelos saw contact with the British government, especially Lloyd George, Chancellor, and Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, as a crucial part of his visit to London. His talks with them were facilitated by the banker and diplomat John Stavridi. Venizelos, Lloyd George and Churchill explored the possibility of a British-Greek entente based on Greece allowing the British fleet access to Argostoli in Cephalonia in return for British support for Greece's aims; or a general entente of which naval cooperation would be an element. These talks did not result in an agreement, but were the start of a close relationship between Lloyd George and Venizelos which was important to Greece during the Great War and after.

Abstract:
Marinos Papadopoulos Vretos (Corfu, 1828–Paris, 1871) represents a remarkable case of a conscious cultural mediator between Greece and France, during a critical time (1850–1870). Through a variety of print media (Greek, French or bilingual), he sought to inform the French-language public about the cultural identity of modern Greeks and to confute the distorted image provided by travel literature. Thanks to his excellent education in French, he managed to penetrate the French press, writing about Greek issues. He mobilised around him a network of French philhellenes, Hellenists and journalists who rebroadcasted his positions. Through his Greek-language Εθνικόν Ημερολόγιον [National Almanac], he ‘coordinated’ an important discussion on the language question, preparing the road for the foundation of the Association pour l’encouragement des études grecques.

Abstract:
Greece and Portugal are two Southern European countries, with nearly the same population as well as a centralized educational system that follows the same vertical structure. Both countries were deeply affected by the economic crisis during the last decade. Despite being severely hit by the economic crisis, Portugal has advanced to the OECD average level in students’ mathematical performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2018), while Greece has performed below the OECD average. PISA, as one of the most influential international educational surveys, aims to evaluate educational systems and provides a valuable platform for comparisons. Portuguese students outperformed their Greek counterparts by 7 points in the first PISA 2000 and went on to widen the difference by 41 points in PISA 2018. In addition to having increased the average performance in Mathematics, Portugal has managed to reduce the percentage of low-achieving students and at the same time increase the percentage of high-achieving students. According to PISA 2018 reports, Portugal is the only member of OECD that has experienced significant improvement in mathematics performance of their students through its participation in PISA. In contrast, the performance of Greek 15-year-old students in mathematics has not improved and has remained below the OECD average since it participated in PISA. What national strategies have been set up and implemented in Portugal so as to foster student’s mathematical literacy competencies? A clear curriculum, students’ regular assessment, teachers’ training and the Action Plan for Mathematics. But despite that fact, the Mathematics performance of Greek 15-year-olds students in PISA in all cycles of PISA remains below the respective OECD average, in contrast with Portugal, that has registered a quantum leap (Crato, 2020). The main aim of this research is, through a recording of the Greek and Portuguese students’ mathematics achievements in PISA and at the same time of the Mathematics Education in both countries, through available policy documents and research reports, to comment on the current outcomes of the two educational systems and their students’ performance in Mathematics.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the comparison of the terminology of tropes and fi gures in the rhetorical treatises by M. Lomonosov and in the East Slavonic rhetorical treatises of the 17th century. Unlike his pre-decessors, Lomonosov provides strict differentiation between Greek borrowings and lexemes which are Russian by origin and doesn’t allow any terminological redundancy. Oscillations that Lomonosov experienced during the nomination of tropes and fi gures are also analyzed. It is shown how exactly Lomonosov creatively works on the terminological heritage of his predecessors. We also reveal the source of the list of fi gures placed in the «Materials for Russian grammar».

Abstract:
As well known, Kyoto was a capital city of Japan with one thousand years history. The long ancient culture brings out a serious of traditional craft products, such as ‘Kana-ami’ — a kind of metal wire network. ‘Kana-ami’ was all made by hand work, for this reason there was no industrial pollution produced during the manufacturing process. In other words, ‘Kana-ami’ is a kind of green manufacturing product, whose processing motion and working experience make a big effect on final products’ quality. Product’s quality was judged by the standard structure of ‘Kana-ami’, which was established and developed in the long course of history and culture. That aesthetical standard has already been consistently rooted into Japanese peoples’ heart deeply. Dated back to around 50 years before, there were about 30 handmade wire net shops in Kyoto. However, it has decreased dramatic until 7 shops now. Therefore, it is urgent time to pay attention to this severe reality and try to do something to keep this traditional culture wealth and continue green manufacturing technique, skill to the next generation. In this research, cooperating with ‘Kanaami Tsuji’ workshop, the excellent products of Mr.Tsuji and his son were chosen as the investigation subjects for Kana-ami’s structure comparison. As well known, ‘Kana-ami’ product made by Mr.Tsuji have already been widely accepted and preferred among Japanese people, even his son’s finish also has beautiful looking. Therefore, the main target of this study was to clarify the difference in shape and hexagon structure of ‘Kana-ami’ products made by Mr.Tsuji and his son through mathematical measurement. Based on this structure evaluation system, hexagon angles and length were discussed and analyzed in order to help his son and other beginners to inherit this Japanese traditional craft technology.
