Abstract:
Focusing on the works of Camillo Sbarbaro and Giovanna Bemporad, this book offers the first in-depth analysis of poetic translations of Greek tragedy in 20th-century Italian poetry. The close examination of the linguistic and ideological diversity embedded in these authors’ works shows how narratives of Greek tragedy shaped their poetic universe, and how their work influenced the Greek paradigm in return. The reader is presented with a textual analysis of Sbarbaro’s and Bemporad’s translations, as well as a discussion of larger cultural patterns. This volume provides a fresh perspective on the

Abstract:
Chapter 6, ‘Of Guilt and Archetypes: Post-War productions of Greek Tragedies in the 1940s and 1950s’, discusses three topics. The first centres on productions of Oedipus the King during the first post-war years, which did not elaborate a new aesthetics but were received as contributions to the issue of being ‘guiltlessly guilty’ (Hegel) and of ‘collective guilt’ (Karl Jaspers). The next two productions each developed a new aesthetics: Brecht’s Antigone in Chur, Switzerland, in 1948 elaborated a model for a philosophical theatre, which at the time went almost unnoticed. Abstract:
This chapter examines the emergence and editorial development of film literature in Greece in the 1920s by drawing two pioneer female film critics, Iris Skaravaiou and Iris Barry, into an “imaginary community” between 1920s Athens and London. It investigates the activities and early professional life of Skaravaiou as well as her links with women critics and cinéphiles of the 1910s and 1920s in France and the United Kingdom in order to relate Greek to West European film literature. It explores how Skaravaiou became involved with film journalism and with developing Greek cinema. It shows that Sk

Abstract:
This article examines the influence of science and politics on the framing of modern agricultural technologies. It discusses the two major developments in agricultural technology in the last halfcentury: the introduction of higher-yielding or “modern” varieties (HYVs/MVs) of major cereals in the 1940s, which gave rise to “Green Revolution”; and the application of genetic engineering in agriculture beginning in the 1980s. It analyzes the arguments for and against the Green Revolution and genetic modification of crops, and highlights the controversies surrounding them. This article suggests that

Sweden started its nuclear programme in the early 1950s. Initially it was generally welcomed as modernization and even supported by environmentalists. The issue became more contested in the 1970s, when protests began and the Centre Party turned anti-nuclear. In the 1980s, the phasing out of nuclear energy until 2010 was decided as a consequence of a referendum. In 2010, however, the parliament decided to allow building a new generation of nuclear power plants. After the Fukushima disaster a new phase of nuclear energy confinement began in 2014 as a consequence of a Red-Green coalition coming t

This chapter examines Ashbery’s mediation of the pastoral tradition in his work of the 1960s and 1970s. If Ashbery rejects the sentimental trappings of pastoral—with its promise of reparation in “the good place” of nature—he remains committed to the liberatory logic which the pastoral traditionally enshrines. The pastoral master trope of “wandering away” helps Ashbery negotiate problems of authenticity, subjectivity, and political commitment in the Vietnam era. Ashbery manages these challenges by pluralizing the lyric speaker in poems such as “A Blessing in Disguise” and “Evening in the Countr

The purpose of this book is to explore the conversion of Muslims to Eastern Orthodox Christianity (Orthodox Christianity) during the Greek War of Independence and the life of the converts during the war and the first three decades of the postindependence years (1821–1862). The book looks at the neophytes’ relations with the Greek and Ottoman states, as well as the ways in which the neophytes merged into Greek society. Since Greek national identity is inextricably linked to Orthodox Christianity, the book discusses the extent to which conversion assisted the neophytes’ integration into Greek so

For nearly 60 years--from its uprising against British rule in the 1950s, to the bloody civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the 1960s, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the 1970s, and the United Nation's ongoing 30-year effort to reunite the island--the tiny Mediterranean nation of Cyprus has taken a disproportionate share of the international spotlight. And while it has been often in the news, accurate and impartial information on the conflict has been nearly impossible to obtain. In The Cyprus Problem, James Ker-Lindsay offers an incisive, even-handed account of the conflict. Ker

The Prologue proceeds from the common understanding that Philhellenism was constitutive of the cultural identity of the German Bildungsbürgertum since the end of the 18th century until the 1970s or even the 1980s – i.e. between the times of the French Revolution (1789) and the reunification of the two German states in 1989. This common understanding usually is connected to German poets and writers from Winckelmann to Stefan George (Eliza Butler) or explained with regard to the development of Altertumswissenschaften (Martin Bernal and Suzanne Marchand), albeit with different emphases.
