Abstract:
The article reveals the role and importance of the project method of Latin teaching; to represent the sample of the project “Latin and Greek medical terminology and their corresponding national equivalents in English”. The basic terminology competence of medical students is formed in Latin lessons because Latin vocabulary is used in Anatomy, Histology, Chemistry, Biology, as well as further clinical disciplines. Thus, the principle of close interdisciplinary integration helps students better understand the nature of the anatomical, histological, pharmaceutical, and clinical terms. Project-based learning to teach Latin and Greek medical terminology contributes training in logical thinking, boosting cognitive processes essential for medicine, and causes the development of research and creative skills of medical students, the ability to independently construct their knowledge, navigate the information space and think critically. It has been found that the use of project learning combined with all necessary elements of co-operating training of future medical workers greatly facilitates their creative training, development of communicative skills and contributes to independent decision-making. The efficient using project-based learning to teach Latin and Greek medical terminology in higher medical educational institutions in combination with conventional teaching and technical support provides the highest quality of the educational process.

Abstract:
The investigation of the process of establishing the Greco-Latin doublets implies the presence of mythological sources, which offer elucidations from the origin and are important in their semantic-functional design. In this article, we propose the analysis of the Greek-Latin doublet < lat. umbilicus, i, m and < gr. omphalos, es, f „umbilical” (national and international dimensions), a representative doublet in medical terminology, but also modestly productive. Each of the components of the doublet requires personalized investigations (diachronic, synchronic aspects): the Latin component is included in the fundamental vocabulary of the Romanian languages (national terminology); Greek component – in the mass of vocabulary (international terminology). Neological lexical creations (formed on the basis of Greco-Latin doublets) correspond to a universal dimension of the conscious creativity of scientists and denominate specialized medical knowledge.

Abstract Medical reports provide a record of a patient’s diagnostic or therapeutic process while receiving healthcare. It is, therefore, critical that patients have a good understanding of their medical reports, particularly as various studies show that misunderstanding or failing to understand them can have severe consequences for their health. Today’s medical reports are essentially expository documents in which nominalizations proliferate and where verbs are scarce. This favours the presence of specific medical terminology, which is the main obstacle to comprehension. Based on an analysis of a corpus of medical reports, in this article we, first, identify and study the lexical indicators (including terms of Greek or Latin origin, abbreviations, eponyms, etc.) that hinder understanding of a medical report and, then, correlate these indicators with such textual parameters as cognitive load, semantic opacity, semantic confusion and semantic ambiguity.

Abstract The anatomical and physiological treatise Περὶ τῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀνθρώπου κατασκευῆς is characterized by a peculiarity of medical terminology which is largely unknown from comparable texts: on the one hand, anatomical terms are put into relation with corresponding terms from poetic language, on the other hand they are precisely defined by descriptions of objects of everyday use. The considerable discrepancy between the Greek original and its Latin translation is of particular interest against the background of the renaissance of Περὶ τῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατασκευῆς in the 16th century AD. The multiple versions of the Latin translation show that medical terminology in Latin language was still in an ongoing process of development, for which reason many Greek anatomical terms were inserted untranslated into the Latin text due to a lack of an adequate Latin equivalents. For this reason Περὶ τῆς τοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατασκευῆς plays a central role in the development of anatomical terminology, but also in its becoming more and more specific and precise.

Swedish medical language is rich with Latin and Greek terminology which has undergone a Swedification since the 1980s. However, many original expressions are still used by clinical professionals. The goal of this study is to obtain precise quantitative measures of how the foreign terminology is manifested in Swedish clinical text. To this end, we explore the use of Latin and Greek affixes in Swedish medical texts in three genres: clinical text, scientific medical text and online medical information for laypersons. More specifically, we use frequency lists derived from tokenised Swedish medical corpora in the three domains, and extract word pairs belonging to types that display both the original and Swedified spellings. We describe six distinct patterns explaining the variation in the usage of Latin and Greek affixes in clinical text. The results show that to a large extent affixes in clinical text are Swedified and that prefixes are used more conservatively than suffixes.

In order to standardize language of medicine, it is essential to have a good command of ancient Greek and Latin. We cannot deny a huge impact of ancient Greek medicine on medical terminology. Compounds of Greek origin related to terms for organs, illnesses, inflammations, surgical procedures etc. have been listed as examples. They contain Greek prefixes and suffixes transcribed into Latin and they have been analyzed. It may be concluded that the modern language of medicine basically represents the ancient Greek language transcribed into Latin.

The professional English-speaking activity of a veterinarian implies the use of a terminological apparatus in veterinary medicine, the words which have Latin and ancient Greek roots. In veterinary medicine, the terms are widely spread and they reflect the scientific achievements of anatomy, physiology and histology of many generations of natural scientists and veterinarians. Latin and English are functioning in the XX and XXI centuries, at the same time English terms with Latin roots replace Latin terms and function successfully in the scientific intercultural communication. The proposed classification of veterinary English terms allows systematizing knowledge in the process of learning English by veterinarians. There are three groups of terms: veterinary, anatomical, biological. Eponymous and abbreviations are significant sources of veterinary medicine. The veterinary terms division provides the formation of professional foreign language competence.

Abstract:
Raw text data online has increased the need for designing artificial systems capable of processing raw data efficiently and at a low cost in the field of natural language processing (NLP). A well-developed morphological analysis is an important cornerstone of NLP, in particular when word look-up is an important stage of processing. Morphological analysis has many advantages, including reducing the number of word forms to be stored computationally, as well as being cost-efficient and time-efficient. NLP is relevant in the field of medicine, especially in automatic text analysis, which is a relatively young field in Swedish medical texts. Much of the stored information is highly unstructured and disorganized. Using raw corpora, this paper aims to contribute to automatic morphological segmentation by experimenting with state-of-art-tools for unsupervised and semi-supervised word segmentation of Swedish words in medical texts. The results show that a reasonable segmentation is more dependent on a high number of word types, rather than a special type of corpora. The results also show that semi-supervised word segmentation in the form of annotated training data greatly increases the performance.
Rå textdata online har ökat behovet för artificiella system som klarar av att processa rå data effektivt och till en låg kostnad inom språkteknologi (NLP). En välutvecklad morfologisk analys är en viktig hörnsten inom NLP, speciellt när ordprocessning är ett viktigt steg. Morfologisk analys har många fördelar, bland annat reducerar den antalet ordformer som ska lagras teknologiskt, samt så är det kostnadseffektivt och tidseffektivt. NLP är av relevans för det medicinska ämnet, speciellt inom textanalys som är ett relativt ungt område inom svenska medicinska texter. Mycket av den lagrade informationen är väldigt ostrukturerat och oorganiserat. Genom att använda råa korpusar ämnar denna uppsats att bidra till automatisk morfologisk segmentering genom att experimentera med de för närvarande bästa verktygen för oövervakad och semi-övervakad ordsegmentering av svenska ord i medicinska texter. Resultaten visar att en acceptabel segmentering beror mer på ett högt antal ordtyper, och inte en speciell sorts korpus. Resultaten visar också att semi-övervakad ordsegmentering, dvs. annoterad träningsdata, ökar prestandan markant.

This dissertation, in regard to Portuguese language field, has as its theme the study of the etymon (word root) of the Greek and Latin languages employed on a more frequent basis in the medical discursive domain. The objectives are to contribute to the studies at the Etymology field, aiming at increasing the expressive capacity as well as the degree of accuracy in the use of medical terminology of Portuguese language upon the Greek and Latin etymon knowledge. For that purpose, the most frequent terms of the Dermatology, Cardiology and Oncology specialities have been looked up in three dictionaries, in order to gain a broader understanding of their morphosemantic elements (lexemes, prefixes and suffixes), enabling the deduction of their meanings grounded on the etymological knowledge. This study has been predicated on the basis of theoretical studies developed in Terminology and Lexicology (Mario Viaro, Lídia Almeida Barros, Maria Tereza Biderman, Maria da Graça Krieger e Maria José Finatto) on the principles of the Portuguese Etymology and Morphology (Celso Cunha e Lindley Cintra; Antônio Sandmann). The obtained results indicated that: a) the Greek and Latin lexemes present a high degree of transparency in relation to their etymological meanings; therefore, facilitating the language users comprehension; b) the highest productivity in the etymon lies in the affixes, that is, there is a degree of polysemy in each of them, which justifies the semantic opacity in relation to the lexemes; c) as to the medical specialities, the scientific term presented a higher transparency in relation to their eponym. The main contribution of this study is, therefore, that the knowledge of etymological values presented in every morphic element of a term is paramount for the mastery of its signification
Este trabalho, situado na linha de história e descrição da língua, do Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa, tem por tema o estudo dos étimos gregos e latinos na língua, empregados com maior frequência na formação de unidades lexicais terminológicas do português em uso no domínio discursivo da Medicina. Seus objetivos são contribuir com os estudos na área de Etimologia, visando ao aumento da capacidade expressiva e do grau de precisão no uso da terminologia médica mediante os conhecimentos dos étimos gregos e latinos. Para a realização desta pesquisa, selecionamos, a partir de três dicionários, termos científicos utilizados nas áreas de Cardiologia, Dermatologia e Oncologia que fazem uso desses étimos, a fim de analisar seus elementos morfossemânticos (lexemas, prefixos e sufixos), permitindo a dedução de seus significados a partir do conhecimento etimológico. Fundamentamos o trabalho em estudos teóricos desenvolvidos em Terminologia, Etimologia e Lexicologia, pautando-nos pelos autores Mario Viaro, Lídia Almeida Barros, Maria Tereza Biderman, Maria da Graça Krieger e Maria José Finatto; quanto à Morfologia do Português, recorremos a Celso Cunha e Lindley Cintra e Antônio Sandmann. Os resultados obtidos apontaram que: a) os lexemas gregos e latinos apresentam alto grau de transparência em relação a seus significados etimológicos, logo, de fácil compreensão por parte dos usuários da língua; b) a maior produtividade nos étimos está nos afixos, isto é, há um grau de polissemia, uma multiplicidade de sentidos na significação de cada um deles, o que justifica a opacidade semântica em relação aos lexemas; c) nas áreas da medicina, o uso do termo científico apresentou maior transparência em relação ao termo eponímico. A contribuição principal da pesquisa, portanto, é que o conhecimento dos valores etimológicos presentes em cada elemento mórfico de um termo é fundamental para o domínio de sua significação

Terminology and Lexicography have been especially addressed to the Allied Health Sciences regarding discussion of case reports or concerning publication of scientific articles. The knowledge of Human Anatomy enables the understanding of medical terms and the refinement of Medical Terminology makes possible a better anatomicomedical communication in a highly technical level. Most of the scientific publications in both Anatomy and Medicine are found only in English and most of dictionaries or search resources available do not have specificity enough to explain anatomicomedical, terminological, or lexicographical occurrences. Objective: To design and produce a Multilingual (English-Portuguese-Spanish, derived from Greek or Latin roots), Terminological Dictionary in Cardiological Anatomy expressed by a list of English anatomicomedical terms in common usage in Cardiology subspecialties addressed to medical students or other allied health sciences professionals, and to translators working in this specific field. Material and Methods: Terms, semantical and grammatical components were carefully selected to compose an anatomicocardiological corpus from the inclusion of words present in the Official Anatomical Terminologies (English-Portuguese-Spanish), as well as the alternative official terms commonly used, which lead to terminology or translation misunderstanding often being a source of anatomicomedical confusion. The adequacy to the thematic terminological research requests and the translation reliability level were settled from the Terminology specificity in contrast to the Semantics, as well as from a peer survey of the main terms used by national and international experts in specialized journals, Internet sites, and from text-books on Human Anatomy, Cardiology, and Thoracic Surgery (Pediatric and Adult). Results: A list with 508 anatomicocardiological terms in English, Portuguese, and Spanish language was composed. It was also determined the number of official terms, alternative official versus non-official terms quoted in the selected sources. Conclusions: The working up of a Multilingual Terminological Dictionary reduces the risk of ambiguities, inconsistencies, inutilities, and repetitions concerning the Nomenclature addressed to the Allied Health Sciences by prioritizing the inclusion of official technical terms and a judicious selection of commonly used terms from Greek or Latin roots. Efforts to put together and standardize lists of terms used in text-books, medical journals and Internet sites regarding Human Anatomy provide opportunities of scientific debate, conceptual enlightenment, and scientific update to students or professionals of the Allied Health Sciences or translators.
A Terminologia é aplicada em Ciências da Saúde na discussão de relatos de casos ou na publicação de artigos científicos. O conhecimento da Anatomia Humana permite compreender termos médicos, e o refinamento da Terminologia Médica possibilita melhor comunicação anatomomédica em nível altamente técnico. Grande parte das publicações científicas em Anatomia e Medicina encontra-se somente em língua inglesa, e a maioria dos dicionários ou dos recursos de busca disponíveis não apresenta especificidade para explicitar ocorrências anatomomédicas, terminológicas ou anatomolinguísticas. Objetivo: Analisar a linguagem anatomédica e a abordagem anatomolinguística das inadequações da Tradução, com base nas Terminologias Anatomicas Internacionais multilíngues (inglês-português-espanhol, a partir de radicais grecolatinos), compilando uma lista de termos anatômicos usualmente empregados em todas as especialidades e subespecialidades da Área da Saúde. Analisar os Epônimos, sua inadequações e imprecisões, bem como sua importância para a Historia da Medicina. Material e Método: Todos os termos foram cuidadosamente selecionados, assim como seus equivalentes linguísticos-semânticos para a compilação de um corpus anatômico, a partir da inclusão de vocábulos presentes nas Terminologias Anatômicas Oficiais em línguas inglesa, portuguesa e espanhola, bem como termos oficiais alternativos que ocasionem erros de terminologia ou de tradução anatomomédicas. A adequação às necessidades da pesquisa terminológica temática e o grau de confiabilidade tradutológica foram determinados a partir da especificidade da Terminologia frente à Semântica, e por levantamento criterioso extenso de todos os termos utilizados por especialistas em periódicos, sites e compêndios em Anatomia Humana. Resultados: Duas listas referenciais, uma com 7.683 termos anatômicos oficiais e oficiais alternativos em línguas inglesa, portuguesa e espanhola, bem como seus radicais grecolatinos foram compiladas. A segunda lista é composta de 424 Epônimos oficiais reconhecidos pelas Terminologias Anatômicas Internacionais. Para facilitar a compreensão do leitor, colocamos os Epônimos em inglês, português e espanhol e logo a seguir, as estruturas relacionadas, usando para tanto os radicais grecolatinos e as respectivas estruturas anatômicas em inglês-português-espanhol. Conclusões: A compilação anatômica multilíngue de termos oficiais e oficiais alternativos, assim como a compilação dos epônimos usados nas Terminologias Anatomicas Internacionais em comparação com a Terminologia Anatômica Brasileira, visa reduzir o risco de ambiguidades, incoerências, inutilidades e repetições, assim como a tradução de equivalentes linguísticos em Nomenclatura direcionada às Ciências da Saúde, ao priorizar a inclusão de termos oficiais e oficiais alternativos comumente utilizados, a partir de radicais grecolatinos. Esforços em compilar, interpretar, adequar e padronizar listas de termos utilizados em livros, periódicos e sites sobre Anatomia Humana promovem oportunidades de discussão acadêmica, esclarecimento conceitual e atualização científica a estudantes ou profissionais das áreas da Saúde ou da Tradução.

ABSTRACT: The thesis seeks to provide a systematic description of the Greek and Latin medical terminology instruction at Czech and foreign medical schools. Its main objective is to build a platform for implementations of instructional innovations. In the first part of the thesis the medical terminology instruction in the Czech Republic is contextualized by giving a historical overview of development of medical terminology and dealing with origins of its instruction at the Faculty of General Medicine in Prague. The view of a present state of the instruction is completed by a profile of a typical medical student, which is based on the questionnaire. The next part of the thesis consists of detailed content analyses of selected Czech and foreign textbooks and their comparison. Based upon these analyses, an original typology of instructional models is set up which can be considered to be the most important theoretical outcome of the thesis. Με την παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία επιχειρώ να προσεγγίσω αυτό που ονομάζεται ορολογία και συγκεκριμένα επιχειρώ μία πρώτη προσέγγιση της ορολογίας της ιατρικής. Θα ήθελα όμως στο σημείο αυτό να σημειώσω ότι, αν και έχουν γίνει αρκετές μελέτες τόσο για την ορολογία γενικά όσο και για συγκεκριμένους κλάδους της ορολογίας, ο τομέας της ιατρικής ορολογίας αποτελεί έναν σχεδόν ολοκληρωτικά ανεξερεύνητο τομέα. Με δεδομένο λοιπόν το γεγονός ότι πρόκειται για έναν ‘άγνωστο’ από ερευνητικής άποψης χώρο και προσπαθώντας να ‘υπερβώ’ αυτή την ερευνητική δυσκολία, επέλεξα να εστιάσω τη γλωσσολογική μου έρευνα στα ακόλουθα θέματα: α) μορφοσημασιολογική ανάλυση των προσφυμάτων στο ελληνικό ιατρικό λεξιλόγιο και ξεχωριστά των επιθημάτων –ία και -ωση και β) μορφοσημασιολογική ανάλυση μιας ιδιαίτερης κατηγορίας σύνθετων όρων, των συνθέτων πολλαπλής σύστασης. Κριτήριο της επιλογής μου αυτών των θεμάτων ήταν πρώτον η ιδιαίτερα υψηλή συχνότητα εμφάνισης στο ιατρικό λεξιλόγιο των επιθημάτων ία και –ωση και δεύτερον η ιδιαιτερότητα από μορφοσημασιολογικής πλευράς των συνθέτων πολλαπλής σύστασης. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο πρώτον αναφέρομαι στην ορολογία γενικά παρουσιάζοντας την ιστορική της εξέλιξη, τα γενικά και λεξιλογικά της χαρακτηριστικά και την πραγματολογική της διάσταση και δεύτερον κάνω μία πολύ σύντομη αναφορά στην ιατρική επιστήμη προσπαθώντας να συσχετίσω την πορεία της με τους ιατρικούς όρους. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο αναφέρομαι στην ελληνική ιατρική ορολογία παρουσιάζοντας την εξέλιξή της, τα τυπικά και μορφοσημασιολογικά της χαρακτηριστικά και ολοκληρώνω την ενότητα αναλύοντας το σημασιολογικό ρόλο των προσφυμάτων στο ιατρικό λεξιλόγιο. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο επιχειρώ την μορφοσημασιολογική ανάλυση των Συνθέτων Πολλαπλής Σύστασης. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο το οποίο χωρίζεται σε δύο ενότητες αναλύω τα επιθήματα –ία και -ωση από σημασιολογικής πλευράς. Κάθε ενότητα αναφέρεται σε ένα επίθημα και στις δύο αυτές ενότητες παρουσιάζω και τις σημασιολογικές κατηγορίες των όρων που δίνει το κάθε επίθημα εφόσον πρόκειται για δύο πολύσημα επιθήματα τα οποία δίνουν παραπάνω από μία εννοιακή κατηγορία το καθένα. Στο πέμπτο κεφάλαιο εκθέτω τα συμπεράσματα στα οποία κατέληξα σε όσα θέματα διαπραγματεύτηκα σε όλα τα κεφάλαια της διπλωματικής μου εργασίας. Στο έκτο κεφάλαιο αναφέρω όρους για τους οποίους δε κατέστη δυνατό, από την έρευνα που έκανα για την εν λόγω διπλωματική εργασία, να καταλήξω σε ένα συμπέρασμα σχετικά με το σημασιολογικό ρόλο των προθημάτων τους. Τέλος, ολοκληρώνω την παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία με το έβδομο κεφάλαιο στο οποίο εκθέτω ερευνητικές προτάσεις για περαιτέρω έρευνα του τομέα της ιατρικής ορολογίας.
