This chapter introduces readers to the most famous Black Catholic parish in the country today, St. Sabina’s on the South Side of Chicago, and its nationally renowned white pastor, Fr. Michael Pfleger. It argues that it is impossible to understand the distinctively Black Catholicism on display at St. Sabina’s today without first understanding the longer history of Black Catholic Chicago explored in the book. This chapter introduces the Black Catholic activists in Chicago who, inspired by Black Power and the Second Vatican Council, fought for the self-determination of Black Catholics in the Archdiocese of Chicago and contributed to the birth of the national Black Catholic Movement. It argues that Black Power was more important than interracial liberalism with regard to Black Catholic involvement in the Black freedom struggles. It focuses on the protest movement to make Fr. George H. Clements, a prominent Black priest and activist, pastor of St. Dorothy parish. This movement united Black Catholics with Black Panthers and other Black Power organizations. The chapter discusses the creation of Black Catholic liturgies that creatively combined Catholic ritual practice with black cultural nationalism. It also illustrates that the incorporation of Black Power into Catholic life by activists was incredibly controversial, especially for other Black Catholics who objected to the “racial particularism” of Black nationalism, which they understood to be in conflict with Catholic universalism.

This chapter uses Iowa City’s history of transnational, multiethnic Catholic cultures to trace the complex and varied origins of a regional Midwestern Catholic culture. Iowa can in a sense be seen as indicative of the Catholic experience in the Lower Midwest, where diverse ethnic Catholic enclaves scattered across a largely rural landscape that also attracted large numbers of worshippers from various Protestant denominations, especially Methodists and Congregationalists. Iowa City provides an excellent setting to trace the formation of a regional Catholic Midwestern culture rooted in plural ethnic diasporas and transnational connections. In the antebellum and early postbellum periods, the town encompassed the diverse, heterogenous character of nineteenth-century Midwestern Catholicism, including significant numbers of Irish, German, and Bohemian (Czech) Catholics. Amid the centrifugal pressures initially exerted by their diversity, this chapter argues, Iowa City’s Catholics experienced in miniature larger processes that would play out across the Midwest and among American Catholics more generally. Uneasily integrated for several decades in a single parish housing the town’s three significant ethnic Catholic communities, St. Mary’s Parish would fracture in favor of ethnic separatism, the formation of distinct ethnic parishes, in the latter decades of the nineteenth century.

Mexicans, tejanos, and braceros converged on Chicago in greater numbers in the World War II era and after. Most settled around St. Francis of Assisi Church, which anchored the city’s largest Mexican neighborhood, the Near West Side. Puerto Ricans joined other Spanish speakers. Priests and nuns aimed to meet immigrants’ religious and social needs. St. Francis offered a rich Catholic liturgical calendar of feast days, novenas, and Holy Hours. Parishioners avidly took part in personal and communal religious devotion. St. Francis became “el refugio de los mexicanos” and simultaneously grew into a very American parish. As the city’s Latino population dispersed, the faithful came from well beyond the Near West Side. The church’s cathedral-like reputation endures even today.

Mexicans and other Latinos constitute 44 percent of Chicago Catholics. Facing a wave of parish closures, the archdiocese’s vitality rests heavily on Latinos. In Pilsen, once home to thirteen parishes, today only three parishes remain. This barrio’s Mexican identity is further challenged by gentrification. Yet Mexican Catholic devotion flourishes in Pilsen in public and unexpected ways, from house shrines and Day of the Dead altars to street Masses and citywide pilgrimages. What developed decades ago in a couple of parishes, most notably, St. Francis, impacts the entire archdiocese. Latinos constitute 17 percent of the US population, and the Mexican-descent population has settled in every state. Chicago’s century-old Mexican population offers lessons for countless dioceses and parishes in the midst of ethnic integration and succession around the nation.

This chapter considers ‘Women Deacons in Ancient Christian Communities: Leadership and Ordination’. Women deacons are widely attested in the Greek-speaking Catholic East during the first millennium. Ancient rites that have been preserved show that the ordination of women deacons was truly ‘sacramental’, just as that of male deacons. Their role consisted in instructing and baptizing female catechumens, guiding women at Sunday worship, taking communion to the sick, and ministering at funeral services. They belonged to the clergy in virtually every parish. They enjoyed more or less the same legal status as male deacons. As time passed, however, the female diaconate was relinquished, partly because of the diminishing of adult baptisms, partly on account of growing anxiety about female clergy possibly polluting the altar through menstruation.

Chapter 1 explores the various factors that shaped Carlson’s identity as a working-class Catholic young woman who was committed to social justice. These included her natal family and childhood neighborhood, her local parish, her women religious teachers, and the impact of World War I and the 1922 shopmen’s strike. Through her experience of World War I, as a working-class Irish and German girl, she had come to question government authority and the 100 percent Americanism that vigilante groups imposed on the community in St. Paul. As a result of her father’s experiences during the shopmen’s strike, she deepened her understanding of the importance of worker solidarity. And Grace came to appreciate early on the importance of education for the development of her autonomy. It was not only her mother, Mary Holmes, who instilled that lesson but also her women religious instructors in high school. The Josephites reinforced the value Grace placed on higher education as a route to economic independence for women and set her feet on the road to a professional career.
