Abstract:
The paper is based on anthropological study fieldwork conducted in Greece during the three subsequent research seasons of 2005-2009. The Greek Civil War (1946-1949) broke out after World War II and it reflected the conflict between communist (or at least leftist) Greek guerillas and the rightist power of the Royal authorities. On one side the war was supported from Moscow, and on the other by Great Britain and US military forces. As a result of the total defeat of communists, the Greek citizens who were actively involved in the military activity, their families and civilians inhabiting the territory of Northern Greece, were evacuated. They were transported by the communist army to different communist countries. For decades they were not able to return to their home villages. Most of the evacuated Greeks decided to come back home when it became possible after 1975. Their memory of the civil war differs from generation to generation and it depends on the role they played in the war. For ex-partisans the civil war was the manifestation of the struggle of the international powers representing class interests. For people who were children during the war the memory is concentrated on particular facts and accidents. People who were born outside of Greece tend to forget, though they also have some image of the war as a horror. The memory of the civil war in Greece have led to the permanent division of the Greek society, which exists till today.

Abstract:
In the fall of 1949, after the end of the Greek Civil War, the bulk of the defeated Greek Communist (KKE) fighters were covertly transported from Albania to Soviet Uzbekistan. This article addresses the covert relocation project, organized by the Soviet Communist Party, and the social engineering program intended to create a prototype Greek People’s Democracy in Tashkent. Drawing on Soviet and Greek Communist Party records, the article raises three major issues: first, the contingencies of postwar transition in the Balkans and the precarious status of the Albanian regime; second, the international Communist response to the military defeat of the KKE in 1949 and the competing visions of the Greek, Soviet, and Albanian parties regarding the future of the Democratic Army of Greece (DAG); third, the intentions of the KKE to establish military bases in Albania and the party’s ensuing effort to transform the agrarian fighters of the DAG into revolutionary cadres for a future victorious repatriation in Greece. Drawing these elements together, the article elucidates the relocation operation of 1949, positions the Greek political refugee experience within the postwar “battle of refugees,” and challenges the widespread historiographical assumption that the KKE immediately abandoned the prospect of a renewed armed confrontation.

Full text
Abstract:
At the dawn of the 21st century, insurgency irrefutably constitutes the most prevalent type of war throughout the world. The Greek Civil War (1946-1949) stands out as one of the rarest occasions of a clear-cut and permanent victory of a government over an insurgent movement during the Cold War. In fact, the Greek Monarchist regime conclusively defeated the foreign-backed Communist insurgency in less than four years - a truly notable feat compared to the humiliating failures of the Great Powers at the hands of insurgent movements during the Cold War. And yet, this - relatively understudied - episode of the Cold War has not been studied thoroughly from the point of view of the strategy of the counter-insurgent. In reality, the vast majority of the works on the Greek Civil War have studied the interventionist policies of the British and Americans and, above all, the strategy of the Greek Communists. What did cause ultimately the defeat of a Communist insurgency which at some point in 1947 seemed in fact undefeatable? Did the Communist guerrilla movement fall victim to the feud between Stalin and Tito and the vainglory of its leadership as several scholars maintain? Or did the massive British and, above all, American aid rescue the Greek Monarchist regime - notorious for its incompetence - from collapse? Or could the Monarchist regime simply take advantage of the massive support from the Anglo American allies and the catastrophic errors of its enemies to score a hard-won, yet inevitable, victory? Ergo, this thesis will attempt to explain how the Greek Monarchist regime decided to counter the Communist insurgency, how external and internal actors influenced these policies and when, how and why these policies were crowned with success. For the very first time, this thesis will study completely and systematically the strategy of the Monarchist regime.

Abstract:
Despite the vast research by both international and Greek academics underlining the reconciliatory policies and reforms that the Greek political leadership implemented between theyears 1974 and 1989, little is stated on a grassroots level by the ex-combatants of the Greek Civilwar about these policies with regards to their reconciliatory effects, as well as the need for their implementation twenty years after the end of the conflict (1949). The overall objective of this research is to evaluate if the series of the policies implemented by the Greek government had actually a reconciliatory effect on the active participants of the Civil war, as well as an impact on the Greek society as a whole. The late introduction of these policies will be also taken intoconsideration. This research is based upon analytical and conceptual considerations drawn by the current literature related to the concept of reconciliation. Particularly, it is focusing on two specific topics; the one of top-down reconciliation approaches, such as policies and reforms implemented by governments and the other of reconciliation time. The findings of the research will be compared to the considerations drawn by the literature in relation to the aforementioned topics. This study is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews complemented with secondary sources, in which an abductive logic of inference is followed. Greece is taken as a case in order to highlight the results contributing to the context of a larger debate, that of top-down late coming reconciliation measures. The analysis of this study gives a deeper insight regarding the importance of top-down approaches as such and the actual time of their implementation. Taking into consideration the Greek case and based on the perception of a sample of twenty-two individuals the results show that the top-down initiatives implemented in Greece, due to their misuse by the political leadership, did not enhance reconciliation significantly. In addition, regarding the time of reconciliation, the interviewees supported that reconciliation efforts in Greece should not have come with a twenty-five years delay. Instead, they should have commenced as soon as possible after the end of the Civil war. These field work results will contribute to future research on similar topics.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the way in which the United States formulated its policy toward Greece during the Greek civil war (1943-1949). It asserts that U.S. intervention in Greece was based on circumstantial evidence and the assumption of Soviet global intentions, rather than on dispatches from the field which consistently reported from 1943-1946 that the Soviets were not involved in that country's affairs. It also maintains that the post-Truman Doctrine American policy in Greece was in essence, a continuation of British policy there from 1943-1946, which meant to impose an unpopular government on the people of Greece, and tolerated unlawful violence of the extreme Greek right-wing.

Abstract:
"Buildings represent a sector with huge energy consumption. It is necessary to reduce this consumption, therefore green buildings have become a global trend in recent years. Green Building Councils in various countries, which are members of World Green Building Council global network, develop and administer many of the world’s ratings tools. World Green Building Council was founded in 1998. There are four predominate ranking systems: LED, BREEAM, GREEN STAR and CASBEE. Slovak Green Building Council was established in November 2010. The first green building in the Slovak Republic received LEED certification in 2012. In the paper it is referred to about 17 new and in-use green buildings in Slovakia which received in period 2012-2019 LEED or BREEAM certifications. In fact, there are more green buildings in Slovakia, where there is still the huge potential in applying a green concept in the sector of existing residential buildings and the public buildings sector. There is a lack of legislative and financial support instruments for green buildings in Slovakia, which are under the consideration and do not exist in practice. The BBC 1 Plus – Offices in Bratislava, the first certified green office building in Slovakia, which received in 2012 the second-highest certification – LEED Gold, is described and analysed in details. The necessity of improving the education process in the green design and sustainable architecture of students at Faculties of Civil Engineering and Faculties of Architecture is outlined. The plans for how it is possible to achieve it are presented."

Abstract:
This paper presents the recent experience of teaching and learning “Green Engineering” in a multidisciplinary seminar. The instructors who organized the seminar included an environmental engineer and a mechanical/manufacturing engineer. The student population included both graduate and undergraduate students majoring in civil/environmental, mechanical, manufacturing and aerospace engineering as well as several biology majors. The course was organized as a semester long seminar with many guest speakers from industry, government, academia and law firms. In addition to assigned reading and literature searches/reviews, the main learning experiences were provided by two large team projects. The first multidisciplinary team project was a “game” that required the students to develop a facility to provide a variety of products that utilized materials that are toxic, hazardous and radioactive. The students were assigned various roles in the company including bidding, manufacturing, environmental and purchasing responsibilities. The teams were judged on both the financial and environmental success of their company. The second multidisciplinary major team project focused on the creation of a green product including, the design and manufacturing processes, as well as the business plan. The student interest in this project was enhanced by a competition with cash prizes that was financed and judged by WPI’s Entrepreneurship program’s faculty and staff.

Abstract:
Pervious concrete is a topic of recent interest and finds vivid applications such as for discharging rain water, filtration of waste water etc. Pervious concrete made with cement as a binder poses serious threats to the environment due to the large amount of green house gases released, especially carbon dioxide, owing to the production of cement. Therefore, it is imperative to find a suitable substitute for cement in the production of concrete. This study presents about the production of pervious concrete, completely replacing cement with fly ash geopolymer binder system. Pervious geopolymer concretes were prepared from Class F fly ash, sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide solution, coarse aggregate and a little quantity of fine aggregate. The alkali to binder ratio of 0.50 by mass and sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide ratio of 2.50 were used. In order to improve the workability of mixture, a super plasticizer Conplast SP 430 (2-3% by weight of binder) was added. Temperature curing at 50 ºC for 24 hours was done. Compression, permeability and water absorption tests were conducted on the specimen at 7 days. The compressive strength of the mixture was found to be 11.66 MPa which is more than that of a brick and water absorption was nearly 2%. The permeability of water through the specimen was found to be 24.63 ml/sec for a pervious cubical specimen of size 10 cm. The pervious concretes produced in this work were not only environment friendly but also achieved better mechanical properties and water permeability. It is inferred that the fly ash geopolymer system could be used to produce pervious concrete.

Abstract:
Public spaces are the locus of activity and interaction in any urban area. Such spaces provide identity to cities, towns or neighborhoods and define the people and culture over there. Inclusiveness is one of the core aspects of livability and is directly associated with Public or Community Spaces. Large population and rapidly expanding urban areas have prompted the need of more inclusivity in public spaces to attain true livable spaces. The aim of the paper is to discuss the livability of Transgender community at Public spaces in India. The study shows how this community was legally included as ‘Third Gender’ in country’s legislation yet lacks social acceptance and security. It shows the challenges and issues faced by them at public spaces. The community was studied on ethnographic basis to understand their culture, lifestyle etc. The findings have indicated towards a social stigma from people and insensitivity in designing of civic spaces. The larger objective of the study is also to provide recommendations on the design aspects and interventions in public places to educate common people to increase their inclusiveness towards the Transgender society, through an integrated approach in architecture. Active engagement of multiple communities is the key to socio-economic and socio-cultural growth. In response, communities have to collaborate on working and living environment and incorporates the no gender-limit adaptability for an augmented livability.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives/Scope The development of Abu Dhabi's sour gas is not without its challenges. Deep drilling in some fields presents its own set of difficulties due to high temp and pressures coupled with +30% H2S and +10% CO2. Handling of these corrosive reservoir fluids both while drilling and then testing, requires deploying advanced technology to meet the specific requirements of these reservoirs, along with the infrastructure necessary to handle the toxic and corrosive products while testing in a brown field safely. Methods, Procedures, Process Developing local sour gas production is seen as the answer to resolve the ever growing energy needs for UAE but the technical requirements for the project is stretching the limits of the industry. Results, Observations, Conclusions What did we do different: Developed and implemented specific HSE procedures and SIMOPS due to close proximity with major populated facilities which could not be shut-down during the testing period. Conducted multiple audits and drills with the local authorities including Civil Defense and local Police. Additional 3rd part supervision was provided to ensure all personal are complying with the policy and procedures developed. Installed 2 green burners and 2 vertical 90 ft flare stacks at 180 degrees. This was to cater for the changing wind directions for continuous operations and as back ups. CCTV monitoring for green burners / flare stacks was conducted although this was a rigless operation 3 circles of H2S detectors and sensors were placed around the testing area and the flare stakes and green burners to detect any H2S gas. (Covering all 360° directions). Blowdown/Depressurization valve was installed at separator, storage tanks apart from Automatic and manual shutdown system upon H2S detection Installed Optic Fiber cable from wellhead to the main control room for monitoring purposes All piping connections used were flange-to-flange as welded joints could have caused stress cracking on the weak points For Sour well operation, used fully cladded X-mass tree & Inconel well completion Considered setting of compatible TTBP (Thru Tubing Bridge Plug) for staked reservoirs zonal isolation Instead of coil tubing cement plug for accurate depth calculations. Arranged Special chemical for any scale cleanout for handling of elemental Sulphur. Arab zones were stimulated with specialized acid recipe developed exclusively for this temperature, pressure and sour conditions downhole. Bottom hole measurements were recorded successfully and all the necessary data was acquired. Novel/Additive Information This paper highlights the major challenges identified and mitigated to test and produce the highly sour HPHT gas during the appraisal program complying with ADNOC 100% HSE in a brown field without disturbing the other major operations being performed in the vicinity.

Abstract:
Abstract Modern gas turbine combustors rely on thermal barrier coatings (TBC) in addition to sophisticated cooling strategies to survive high temperature environments. The need for lower emissions either driven by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations or by customers desire for green engines often necessitates increased air budget for improved mixing, thus resulting in less available cooling flow. Even with state-of-the-art cooling schemes to offset reduced cooling air allocation, combustors can benefit from better TBC performance to mitigate durability challenges. This paper showcases the next generation Air Plasma Spray (APS) porous TBC developed by Honeywell as well as discusses tests performed and results gathered to assess its suitability for combustor application. A configured test specimen was utilized to evaluate suitability of new coating system for combustor application. The configured specimen captures the material system, geometric features, manufacturing, and assembly process associated with combustor fabrication and thus provides a realistic environment for performance assessment. The configured specimen test results indicate the new APS porous TBC showed better performance than the standard 6–8% Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) porous TBC. The new TBC with its lower conductivity at higher temperature, increased thickness capability, and superior stability at substantially higher temperature than 6–8% YSZ TBC enables hot section components to survive hotter engine cycles.

Abstract:
This year marks the 190th birthday of the famous Swiss architect of Italian origin A.I. Bernardazzi, who is also known for creating various historic buildings in Ukraine, Bessarabia and Poland. Archival documents were an evidence of the beginning of architectural career of Bernardazzi, when the Bessarabian Road and Construction Commission appointed him as the technician for urban planning of Akkerman and Bendery in 1853 and also for building some bridges and causeways in those districts. He took part in the organization of the third market in the Forest Square in Kishinev in September of 1855. This was the first mission of his creativity in Kishinev. Alexander Bernardazzi executed his duty as municipal architect from 1856 to 1878 having taken the place of another architect Luca Zaushkevich. All his subsequent monumental buildings became the best examples of European architecture by their style, shape, and quality. . In Bessarabia, he participated in the design and construction of many buildings such as the temporal theatre, the Lutheran school, the railway station, the Greek Church, the Manuk-Bei’s palace, etc. As for Kishinev, the architect Bernardazzi performed the beautification of paving many streets, the construction of urban water supply and the cast-iron railing in the city park. Also, he participated in many architects’ meetings where he submitted interesting reports referring to the theater, some windows, fire safety of buildings and so on. After his arrival to Odessa in 1878, Alexander Bernardazzi continued to participate in designing social and civil buildings in Bessarabia. For his enormous creative contribution to urban development, he was appreciated with the title of honorable citizen of Kishinev and appointed member of the Bessarabian department of the Imperial Russian Technical Society.

"Proposal for a new monolithic constructive system using mycocomposite nucleus." In 7th International Congress on Scientific Knowledge. Exatas & Engenharias, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25242/885x331120212419.

Abstract:
“Green” materials and productive processes have progressively been searched for. In the last years, it has increased the number of researches regarding mycocomposites characterization and, above all, their applicability. Biofabrication is a process that is carried out by incubating the substrate composed of organic residues with fungal mycelium. During incubation, the fungus gradually develops on the substrate, penetrating the microscopic channels of the different residues, and acting both as a reinforcing fiber and as a binding material. This Project was designed to seek the most suitable combination between substrate components and the fungus Ganoderma sp.aiming to obtain a mycocomposite which could be used as a nucleus of an alternative monolithic constructive system. In this project, composites using the fungus Ganoderna sp. and five different types of waste (white wood sawdust, cornstarch, bark and coffee grounds, and piassava fiber) were investigated. The morphology of these components, as well as mycelium and substrate interaction, was studied by scanning electron microscopy technique. The mechanical properties were determined through bending and compression tests, being correlated with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The fabrication of a mycocomposite panel was proposed as an application; it could be included as the core of the prototype of a building system of walls, structured with steel and mortar. Thus, this project aimed to contribute to the ecosystem’s quality, once the raw material used was composed of organic waste that would be reinserted in a production process instead of being discarded in nature. Besides, the project suggests the production of a new biologically-based material for civil construction.

Biggs, Simon, Michael Fairweather, James Young, Neil Hyatt, and Francis Livens. "The DIAMOND University Research Consortium: Nuclear Waste Characterisation, Immobilisation and Storage." In ASME 2009 12th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2009-16374.

Abstract:
Legacy waste treatment, storage and disposal, as well as decommissioning and site remediation, from the UK’s civil nuclear programme are estimated at a cost of £70B. Within the UK, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) directs the strategy for all civil nuclear decommissioning and demanding timescales have been set for remediation of all nuclear sites. Additionally, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) recently delivered a recommendation, accepted by Government, that geological disposal in a mined repository presents the “best available approach” for long term management of the waste legacy. There is therefore a requirement to decommission all power generation and experimental reactors, and fuel reprocessing plants, to decontaminate land, and to return nuclear licensed sites to brown or green field status. The engineering and scientific challenges that lie ahead in meeting these targets are significant, and many of the ideas required to deliver the final end state have not yet been researched. In recognition of this the UK Research Council’s Energy Programme released a call for research proposals in the area of nuclear waste management and decommissioning valued at £4M. A grant was subsequently awarded in 2008 to a consortium led by the University of Leeds, with member universities from Manchester, Imperial College, Sheffield, Loughborough and University College London. The DIAMOND (Decommissioning, Immobilisation And Management Of Nuclear Wastes For Disposal) consortium will undertake research aligned with the strategic priorities of the NDA and the CoRWM recommendations. Its primary purpose is to be adventurous and to deliver innovation. However, research is also being performed that will be of more immediate benefit to industrial stakeholders, with near-term impact achieved through the adoption of off-the-shelf technology currently implemented by other industries. Currently more than 20 industrial organisations are linked directly to the consortium. The aims of the consortium are to carry out internationally leading research in the areas of decommissioning and waste management that underpins the development of innovative and relevant technologies for industrial use. It will broaden the research base that focuses on relevant technologies, support new links within and between universities, promote multi-disciplinary collaboration and new applications of existing knowledge, and train the next generation of researchers to address a developing skills gap.

Abstract:
As the war against Ukraine erupted on 24 February 2022, national minorities found themselves among its first victims, both as individuals and communities characterized by unique knowledge, language, and culture. This piece looks into the immediate effects of the war on ethnic Greeks and Bulgarians, and potential lessons learned for the state of Ukraine and its minorities from these tragic events. Whereas ethnic Greeks strive for physical survival in a besieged city of Mariupol and its surroundings, ethnic Bulgarians have mobilized in support of refugees. Those situations highlight the role of minority community leaders in voicing support for the Ukrainian authorities and as facilitators of aid from kin-states, as well as turn minority civil society organizations (CSOs) into agents of change of nation-wide significance.
