Master of Science<br>Food Science - Animal Sciences & Industry<br>Fadi Aramouni<br>Blue-green pigments have the ability to form in crushed and whole garlic cloves following a rapid series of enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions. Economic losses associated with a reduction in organoleptic quality of garlic (Allium sativum L.) containing blue-green pigments can be incurred. Preventing blue-green pigment formation can mitigate potential financial and brand equity damages. To prevent pigment formation, inactivation of the enzyme which yields pigment substrates is essential. Two methods to inactivate the enzyme associated with pigment formation were explored: blanch treatment of whole garlic cloves (100°C, 5 min); and soaking of whole, non-blanched garlic cloves in low pH (<3.0) acetic or citric acid pickling solutions for seven days. The blanching treatment was effective in inactivating the enzyme as the pigment substrate decreased by approximately 99% as compared with pigment substrate concentrations in non-blanched garlic cloves. Soaking whole garlic cloves in low pH (<3.0) pickling solutions did not result in enzyme inactivation as pigments formed in cloves soaked in the acetic acid pickling solutions; however pigments did not form in cloves soaked in the citric acid pickling solution. This may be due to the different effect mono- and poly-carboxylic acids have on the permeability of garlic cell membranes. Blanching garlic cloves can be implemented as a processing step to prevent pigment formation. Soaking garlic in a low pH pickling solution comprised of a poly-carboxylic acid does not inactivate the enzyme associated with pigment formation but pigment formation can be prevented. Other methods presented in the literature to prevent pigment formation include controlling growth, harvest and storage conditions, as well as treating garlic clove homogenates with chemical additives.

Abstract:
In this thesis, an analysis technique for the slot coupled patch antennas using MoM in conjunction with the closed form Green&rsquo<br>s functions is presented. Slot coupled patch antennas are fed by a microstrip open stub which is coupled to the patch through an electrically small slot. Current distributions over the microstrip line, slot line and the patch are represented by rooftop basis functions. First, a relatively simple structure, microstrip coupled slot line is investigated using the proposed technique. Then the method is extended to the slot coupled patch antenna geometry. By using the method, current distributions on the feedline and the patch are calculated for a generic slot coupled patch antenna. Then by using the distributions, return scattering parameters of the antenna is approximated with complex exponentials using Prony&rsquo<br>s method. A parametric study is carried out to observe the effect of each antenna component on the antenna performance. Current distributions and return loss calculations are repeated for modified antennas to observe and demonstrate the performance differences. All simulations are verified using HFSS&reg<br>software and the results available in the literature.

Abstract:
This research studied recombinant DNA-derived protein expression utilising expression vectors containing IRES sequences to link the gene of interest with the gene encoding selectable marker in mammalian cell cultures. Polycistronic expression constructs utilising internal ribosome entry site (IRES) can link unrelated genes under control of a single promoter. Transient study on the IRESlinked gene expression was performed. It was possible to standardise the level of protein expression to plasmid number by determining the number of free plasmids in the cytoplasm. The expression of a selectable marker when downstream of IRES was reduced in comparison to the monocistronic construct. Importantly when IRES was used, there were no negative effects on recombinant gene expression upstream of IRES. Down-regulating the selectable marker gene expression has been shown to enhance the probability of obtaining highly expressing clones. To investigate the effects of down-regulating fusion metallothionein green fluorescent protein (MTGFP), new constructs were created to combine metal inducible M2.6 promoter to drive the expression of human growth hormone linked to MTGFP by an attenuated IRES. This resulted in less MTGFP expression, reduced survivability and mean fluorescence in the presence of heavy metal. The increased metal sensitivity lengthened the initial selection period using reduced metal concentration in comparison to cells transfected with wildtype MTGFP. FACS can be used to select for resistance conferred by MTGFP despite reduced expression. FACS enrichment and sorting increased the hGH expression, which was correlated with mean fluorescence of the population; therefore fluorescence can be used as an indication of the final recombinant protein expression. Different approaches to isolate suitable clones were also investigated. It is preferable to select the transfected pool in low metal concentration for two weeks, sort for cells of high-fluorescence, and allow for recovery and proliferation. It is then possible to amplify gene expression by culturing the clones in increasing metal, resulting in further improvement of recombinant protein expression.

La terra ci sta inviando segnali di indebolimento, e per evitare l’esaurimento delle risorse naturali l’uomo dovrebbe cercare di creare un rapporto mutualistico con essa. È necessario, quindi, che l’uomo riconsideri il proprio consumo ed impari a riciclare il più possibile, solo così si potranno preservare le risorse naturali e si ridurrà la quantità di rifiuti. Un’impresa che intraprende il proprio viaggio verso la sostenibilità dovrebbe, pertanto, attivarsi nell'ecologia industriale. L’economia, per essere sostenibile, dovrebbe imitare la natura; gli ecosistemi, funzionando come un ciclo chiuso, non producono rifiuti: gli scarti di un organismo diventano nutrimento per un altro. Questa è stata la logica di fondo che ha spinto l’azienda in esame ad adottare un impianto che le consente di attuare un “closed loop system”, un sistema in cui gli scarti di un’attività produttiva diventano input per un’altra attività, in rispetto al principio del cradle to cradle. I rifiuti non sono più considerati spazzatura, ma vengono valorizzati e convertiti in risorse preziose. Questi molteplici scambi di rifiuti-risorse tra imprese dissimili danno vita a sistema simbiotico, fondato sulla reciprocità e collaborazione. Nell’elaborato inizialmente si farà una visione panoramica incentrata sui concetti di ecologia industriale e di “cradle to cradle”; successivamente si tratterà il caso di un’azienda che è riuscita a cogliere il valore della sostenibilità, ed infine si cercherà di sviluppare un progetto di simbiosi industriale che potrebbe idealmente realizzarsi.

La gestione del fine vita dei prodotti è un argomento di interesse attuale per le aziende; sempre più spesso l’imprese non possono più esimersi dall’implementare un efficiente sistema di Reverse Logistics. Per rispondere efficacemente a queste nuove esigenze diventa fondamentale ampliare i tradizionali sistemi logistici verso tutte quelle attività svolte all’interno della Reverse Logitics. Una gestione efficace ed efficiente dell’intera supply chain è un aspetto di primaria importanza per un’azienda ed incide notevolmente sulla sua competitività; proprio per perseguire questo obiettivo, sempre più aziende promuovono politiche di gestione delle supply chain sia Lean che Green. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro, nato dalle esigenze descritte sopra, è quello di applicare un modello innovativo che consideri sia politiche di gestione Lean, che dualmente politiche Green, alla gestione di una supply chain del settore automotive, comprendente anche le attività di gestione dei veicoli fuori uso (ELV). Si è analizzato per prima cosa i principi base e gli strumenti utilizzati per l’applicazione della Lean Production e del Green supply chain management e in seguito si è analizzato le caratteristiche distintive della Reverse Logistics e in particolare delle reti che trattano i veicoli a fine vita. L’obiettivo finale dello studio è quello di elaborare e implementare, tramite l’utilizzo del software AMPL, un modello di ottimizzazione multi-obiettivo (MOP- Multi Objective Optimization) Lean e Green a una Reverse Supply Chain dei veicoli a fine vita. I risultati ottenuti evidenziano che è possibile raggiungere un ottimo compromesso tra le due logiche. E' stata effettuata anche una valutazione economica dei risultati ottenuti, che ha evidenziato come il trade-off scelto rappresenti anche uno degli scenari con minor costi.

The complete set of Green&rsquo<br>s functions for cylindrically layered media is presented. The formulations reported in the previously published work by Tokg&ouml<br>z (M.S.Thesis, 1997) are recalculated, the missing components are added and a solution to the problem when (rho equals rhop) is proposed. A hybrid method to calculate mutual coupling of electric or magnetic current elements on a cylindrically layered structure using MoM is proposed. For the calculation of MoM matrix entries, when (rho equals rhop) and fi is not close to fip, the closed-form Green&rsquo<br>s functions are employed. When fi is close to fip, since the spectral-domain Green&rsquo<br>s functions do not converge, MoM matrix elements are calculated in the spectral domain. The technique is applied to both printed dipoles and slots placed on a layered cylindrical structure. The computational efficiency of the anaysis of mutual coupling of printed elements on a cylindrically layered structure is increased with the use of proposed hybrid method due to use of closed-form Green&rsquo<br>s functions.

Abstract:
As the demands for energy increased with the global increase in population, there is a need to create and invest in more clean and renewable energy sources. Energy derived from the movement of the tides is an ancient concept that is currently being harnessed in a handful of large tidal range locations. However, the need to move from fossil fuel driven energy sources to those that are clean and non-polluting is a priority for a sustainable future. Globally, hydropower potential is estimated to be more than 16,400-Terawatt hours annually. Given that the electricity consumption worldwide was at 15,068-Terawatt hours in 2016, if properly utilized, hydropower could supply a substantial percentage of current demand. Most of the current hydropower supply is drawn from well-established dams and tidal barrage systems. However, tidal power plants that harness the change in water height and flow along the coast (i.e. using tidal energy) have the potential to push these figures even higher. Although there is no exact number for lengths of global coastlines, there are estimates that put that number between 220,000 and 880,000 miles of coasts. These opportunities in tidal energy technologies that harness energy from the sea may one day be the key to solving our energy crises. This research explored in detail a closed, convergent system for optimal extraction of head-driven tidal energy with minimal adverse environmental effects. The long-term goal of this project is to create a system that is viable in low tidal range locations traditionally not considered for locations of tidal energy systems, therefore increasing the overall global tidal energy portfolio. By implementing a closed system of ‘bladders’ and convergent nozzles to optimize the flow rate of the contained fluid, the proposed system can 1) derive tidal energy in low tidal range geographies 5 2) avoid typical hazards like system biofouling, marine life propeller impacts, and 3) allow for ease of installation, operation, and maintenance.

There are discussed the design principles under which they are implemented in practice. Airports that use these procedures are overviewed. The practical benefits for the environment, air service providers and carriers are discussed. Furthermore, the main differences between the nowaday and the previous type of approach are analysed.

Abstract:
Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, zu untersuchen, ob sich mit der Düngung von Stroh, Gehölzhäcksel, frischem Pferdemist und Grüngutkompost die Ertragsleistung und Nährstoffaufnahme von Leguminosen sowie der Folgefrucht Winterweizen steigern lässt. Darüber hinaus sollte die Aufnahme von düngebürtigem Kohlenstoff durch Rotklee mittels 13-C-angereichertem Stroh quantifiziert werden. Die Verfügbarkeit von Kalium, teilweise auch von Schwefel und Molybdän, wurde vor allem nach der Düngung von Grüngutkompost und von Pferdemist für die untersuchten Leguminosen verbessert, während nach der Düngung von Gehölzhäcksel und Stroh keine signifikanten Effekte auf die Nährstoffaufnahme der Pflanzen festgestellt werden konnten. Die scheinbare Ausnutzung des gedüngten Stickstoffs durch die Leguminosen lag in Abhängigkeit von der Düngung zwischen 0 und 9 % (Gehölzhäcksel < Grüngutkompost < Pferdemist < Stroh). Nur nach der Düngung von Pferdemist zu Saatplatterbse und Ackerbohne verringerte sich der Anteil an symbiotisch fixiertem Luftstickstoff am Spross-N gegenüber der Kontrolle, nicht jedoch die symbiotisch fixierte N-Menge. Der Vorrat an mineralischem Stickstoff im Boden in einer Tiefe von 0 bis 30 cm war unter Ackerbohne und Rotklee ca. 40 Tage nach der Düngung und Einarbeitung von Gehölzhäcksel gegenüber den Vergleichsvarianten und der Kontrolle deutlich vermindert. Ein Einfluss der durch die Düngung bedingten temporären N-Festlegung im Boden auf den Anteil an fixiertem Luftstickstoff am Spross-N konnte bei keiner der untersuchten Leguminosen festgestellt werden. Der nachfolgende Winterweizen reagierte in einem Jahr mit signifikant höherem Kornertrag auf die Düngung von Grüngutkompost zu Ackerbohne und erhöhtem Rohproteingehalt im Korn auf die Düngung von Pferdemist zu Saatplatterbse. Mit Hilfe von 13-C-markiertem Stroh wurde im Freiland eine Assimilation von 0,5 % der mit dem Stroh gedüngten Kohlenstoffmenge durch Rotklee ermittelt.<br>The aim of this study was to examine, whether the application of wheat straw, pruning, horse manure and green compost improves the yield formation and nutrient uptake of legumes and the succeeding crop winter wheat. Furthermore it should be quantified the amount of carbon in red clover derived from the organic fertilizer by carbon dioxid assimilation. An improved uptake of potassium, partially of sulphur and molybdenum for the legumes could be detected after the application of green compost and horse manure. No effects were found on plant nutrient uptake after the application of straw and pruning. The apparent utilization of the applied nitrogen by organic fertilizer was 0 to 9 %, depending on the fertilization (pruning < green compost < horse manure < straw). The proportion of symbiontically fixed nitrogen decrease in faba bean and in chick-pea after manuring with horse manure compared with the control. However the total amount of symbiotically fixed nitrogen did not decreased. The amount of mineral nitrogen in the soil (depth: 0 to 0,3 m) was significant reduced under faba bean and red clover, 40 days after application and incorporation of pruning. No effect on the symbiotic nitrogen fixation of the legumes was found because of the organic fertilizer induced temporary immobilization of nitrogen in this soil layer. An increased grain yield was determined in the succeeding winter wheat after fertilizing green compost to faba bean and a higher content of crude protein in grain of the wheat was determined after fertilizing horse manure to chick-pea. With the help of a 13C-tracer method it could be estimated, that about 0,5 % of the added carbon with straw was assimilated by red clover under field conditions.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the effect of reverse logistics practices on supply chain performance in the construction sector that adversely impacts the environment. Mixed-method was adopted to examine the role of reverse logistics practices, environmental impacts of reverse logistics strategies, and the effect of reverse logistics on supply chain performance. Results revealed that waste management is the mere focus of reverse logistics in the industry, reuse is environmentally the best option, and reverse logistics favourably impact most of the performance criteria. The study provided recommendations for strategic decision and policy making for successful reverse logistics at macro, meso, and micro levels.

In particular, the manufacturing industry is burdening the entire environment. Nowadays, enterprises are also attracted by environmental awareness, so the concept of green supply chain is included. In the business operation objectives, to reduce resource waste. Therefore, based on this concept, this paper proposes a green closed supply chain integration operation model, and integrates the manufacturing supply chain and the reverse logistics chain to form a closed supply chain, that is, the reverse supply chain for recycling used products is the same path as the manufacturing supply chain; The reverse chain is mainly to recycle the second-hand products of customers and re-manufacture, and also consider the quality of second-hand products to explore its impact on the entire model. Due to the uneven quality of the recovered products, only some of the products can be selected for re-production and manufacturing, which reduces the manufacturer's output and causes a decline in the overall net income in the supply chain. The results show that when the second-hand raw material reproducibility rate (k) is 0.9, the net income is US$6,356,992; when the second-hand raw material reproducibility rate (k) is 0.8, the net income is US$6,352,867, which can verify the prediction of this study. . In addition, in the post-adjusted model of the second-hand raw material re-production rate (k), the sensitivity analysis of the impact of government subsidies and second-hand product recovery rate on net income is analyzed, and it is known that when government subsidies increase, the net income of the supply chain will It will increase accordingly, and when the recovery rate of second-hand products increases, its net income will also increase. However, the impact of government subsidies on the net income of the supply chain is obvious. Therefore, this study knows that “government subsidies” are the key factors in the model.

Abstract:
The transfer of N from legume green manures (GMr) can satisfy the needs of a successive cash crop, but rotations that have over-wintering legumes also carry an increased risk of off-season (Sep.–June) N losses, especially during spring thaw. Spring-wheat yield among four GMr systems were evaluated with respect to off-season (GMr; Sep.–June) and in-season (wheat; June–Sep.) N2O emissions, as well as full-year NO3– leaching and dissolved N2O losses during spring-thaw from a tile-drained sandy loam soil in Atlantic Canada over 2 rotations (2011–2013). Four GMr systems (treatments) differed in the timing and season of GMr incorporation and the use of additional N as fertilizer or manure. The majority (66%) of cumulative N2O emissions were measured during the off-season because of high N2O emissions events during spring thaw. There was no clear effect of GMr system on these emissions, which may have been a result of the pattern and duration of soil freezing and thawing. Spring thaw also coincided with the highest dissolved N2O concentrations (100–300 µg N2O-N L–1) in tile-drained water, which represented potential N2O emissions of 21 to 116 g N2O-N ha–1. Belowground N2O concentrations and soil water content measurements during winter provided further evidence of the relationship of N2O dissolved in drainage water and N2O emissions at the soil surface. Wheat yield among treatments in either year of study were not different, but was 1.5 times greater in Year 2 (2.62 ± 0.27 Mg ha–1), than Year 1 (1.05 ± 0.12 Mg ha–1). The highest NO3– concentrations in drainage water (Oct.; 13.8 mg NO3–-N L–1) were measured from the GMr system with the earliest fall incorporation (i.e., Sep.) and the addition of spring fertilizer when compared to the mean of all other treatments (9.8 mg NO3–-N L–1). The use of supplemental N did not translate into additional gains in yield, yet increased in-season N2O emissions and greater NO3– leaching. Abstract:
Overall soil productivity is declining in the U.S. due to loss of soil organic matter (SOM). Decreased SOM lowers soil water storage, reduces water infiltration, slows aggregate formation, and depletes soil of nutrients. In many systems, crop nutrients are replaced by expensive synthetic fertilizers that can lead to environmental concerns. This practice is not economically or environmentally sustainable in the long term. To secure future soil use and crop production, sustainable management practices are needed to prevent further SOM depletion. Incorporating legumes into cropping systems is one alternative that can bolster soil organic C (SOC) (key indicator of SOM) and reduce N fertilizer applications through symbiotic legume N fixation. Three studies were conducted over multiple years at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center near Overton, TX. Annual cool- and warm-season legumes were evaluated as potential green manure crops and intercrops under grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], high-biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], and annual forage cropping systems. These studies quantified legume soil moisture usage and C and N contributions to the soil and subsequent crop yields in East Texas. Primary project objectives were to maintain or maximize primary crop yields at reduced N fertilizer rates and to build SOC through the integration of legume green manures and intercrops. Green manuring cool-season legumes showed the most beneficial effect on SOC, soil total N, and crop yields; however, significant increases in yield were only detected after three years in rotation. Intercropping Iron-and-Clay cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. [Walp]) decreased yield of both high-biomass sorghum and grain sorghum due to competitive vegetative growth. Iron-and-Clay did however improve biomass yields of high-biomass sorghum in two subsequent years when implemented as a green manure. Despite large N yields as high as 310 kg ha-1, impacts of legumes on annual forage crops was limited. Poor response was likely a result of previous field history in which a permanent warm-season grass pasture was cultivated for site preparation and mineralized SOC released substantial amounts of available N. Under low soil N conditions, legume green manures produce enough N to likely reduce N fertilizer requirements cost-effectively for subsequent crops in East Texas.

But in the process of development, it has caused many unexpected social problems. In this paper, we design a green closed-loop supply chain for bicycle-sharing enterprises to solve the existing problems of these enterprises. A multi-objective integer programming model is established to maximize the profit and minimize the carbon emissions in the chain by analyzing the models and characteristics of bicycle-sharing enterprises The part of the solution of the model uses NSGA-II Algorithm to find the Pareto solution set of the model The solution set can help the bicycle-sharing enterprise to design, construct and arrange the facilities and the open status of the closed-loop supply chain and control the flow between the nodes To profit maximization the system and minimize the carbon footprint of the system.

Recently, researcher integrated the supply chain is the mainstream of the industry. Consequently, we integrated the manufactory chain and the reverse chain into our closed-loop green supply chain model, and considering the strategy of trade credit in our paper. Trade Credit means buyer can buy the goods before they paying account to the vendor in our research. Therefore, the model can close to reality industry in the imperfect environment. The research is to find the optimal order quality of the minimum cost in 8 different situations, and applying Lingo to find the optimal way. Additional, we change the interest of each level, comparing what the profit will change. In the end, we take the example of a computer manufacturer, through the numerical example to find the optimal strategy of delay payment in supplier, manufactory, wholesaler and retailer. In terms of interest rate, we found that changing interest rate of wholesalers can get the highest profit. In the future, we can apply this model to find the best strategy in different situations. We focus on the fixed-strike type because the floating-strike type can be calculated through the symmetric property. To derive the closed-form solution to the option price and Greeks, we use the shifted log-normal distribution to match the moments of the arithmetic average value. Furthermore, we find a closed-form solution to the parameters which is new in the literature so that pricing and hedging are faster to execute than before. In the end, we compare three moment matching methods (based on shifted log-normal, log-normal and reciprocal gamma distribution) and Monte Carlo simulation as benchmark. Numerical results show our approach gives results very close to those by Monte Carlo simulation.

This research has generated the underwater DEM from close-range photogrammetry and Light detection and ranging (Lidar) techniques with green-wavelength Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and reports a correction procedure for light refraction effects to estimate underwater topography. In this research, we developed a reliable and stable method to correct the water refraction effect by regression method. We also developed the algorithm based on Snell’s Law to correct the water refraction effect in TLS point clouds. A bowl-shaped model with the diameter of 15 cm and the height of 3 cm covered by the Ottawa standard soil was submerged into the water depths from 5 cm to 25 cm for accuracy assessment of our methods. The results show that the corrected DEM has a RMSE value less than 1.5 mm for photogrammetry technique and a RMSE value less than 4.0 mm for lidar technique, respectively.

One centralized and three decentralized CLSC models are investigated under RPM whereas four decentralized models are examined under CTP. For decentralized models, by assuming the manufacturer is the leader, the equilibrium solutions are obtained in the closed-form format under the Stackelberg game settings. Based on the optimal/equilibrium solutions and the corresponding objective function values, we present several interesting managerial insights for the proposed models under RPM and CTP.

L) belonging to the genus Capsicum in the family Solanaceae is a herbaceous plant that can be grown annually or a perennially (at tropic areas). Chili pepper was originated from Peru, South America and carried to the Europe by Christopher Columbus in the fifteenth century. Today, pepper is globally present and has becomes an important agricultural produce in Taiwan. Pingtung, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, and Chiayi counties are the main pepper growing districts in Taiwan. More than 25 viruses have been reported to infect pepper and have made virus disease one of limiting factors of pepper production. Virus-like yellowing and mild necrosis were observed on the chili pepper plants in the NTU experimental field. By the successive single-lesion isolation on Chenopodium amaranticolor, a viral isolate of a virus was obtained. Transmission electronic microscopy revealed numerous rigid rod-like particles about 300 nm long, that strongly suggesting that isolated virus was belong to the tobamovirus. According to the literature, tobamoviruses isolated from peppers in Taiwan included Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), and Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV). To identify this unknown tobamovirus, first, molecular cloning this viral genome was conducted a poly (A) tail was added to the 3′ end of the purified viral RNA and the RACE strategy was perform to obtain independent clones and then sequenced. The result of blast search against the NCBI database indicated that the clones contained a partial sequence of Tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV). To our knowledge, this is the first report of TMGMV identified in Taiwan and this isolate was named as TMGMV-HP. To further cloning and characterization, the entire genome of the TMGMV-HP revealed that it was highly homologous to tobamovirus infecting solanaceous plants and showed 98% identity with the TMGMV-Japanese isolate. Also, a full-length cDNA clone of TMGMV was constructed and followed by successive infectivity tests, five infectious cDNA clones were obtained. An efficient TMGMV-based viral vector is still under construction. To determine the prevalence of TMGMV in Taiwan, samples collected from different sources were detected by ELISA and RT-PCR. The result suggested that mixed infection among TMGMV and other tobamoviruses occurred occasionally.

Taiwan has witnessed an emerging trend of establishments of green restaurant, green hotels, and green-related associations, which have provided some positive support to environmentally friendly hospitality businesses. In this study, in order to understand the impacts of various factors on consumer willingness to stay in green hotels, the auther carried out statistical tests to examine factors such as the perceived value of environmental protection, feeling close to the nature, agreement to environmentally friendly behavior, and environmental awareness. The findings suggest that both perceived value of environmental protection and agreement to environmentally friendly behavior significautly affect consumer willingness to stay in green hotels.
