Abstract:

This study examined the politics and political involvements of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus in the early postcolonial era, with a special focus on the ecclesiastical coup that aimed for the ouster of Archbishop Makarios III, who was also the President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1960 to 1977. The findings indicate that the Greek junta, Greek Cypriot terrorists, and the three bishops of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus joined forces to oust Makarios by forcing him to resign his presidency. These actors were displeased with Makarios because he tolerated Cypriot communism, refused to follow Athens’ manipulations in Cypriot politics, and promoted Cyprus’ independence by abandoning the pro-Enosis (unification of Cyprus with Greece) political line. The Greek junta tried to dictate policies to Makarios and asked him to resign as he refused to obey. Greek Cypriot terrorists engaged in violence to destabilize the island and oust Makarios. The three bishops summoned the Holy Synod and defrocked the Archbishop as he refused to resign his presidency. Importantly, this research came across with strong indicators that the Greek junta tried to utilize religion in trying to oust the Cypriot ethnarch as the three bishops, immediately after the junta’s failure to oust Makarios in 1972, asked him to resign his presidency. While his rivals failed to oust Makarios, at least until 1974, he called for an international synod and defrocked the three bishops. He managed to retain both posts until the end of his life.

Abstract:

The Greek economic crisis has triggered a self-reflexive process and prompted a re-examination of political and cultural trends in Greece since 1974 in an attempt to rethink earlier cultural approaches and practices. This article argues that a cultural perspective on the crisis can be productive insofar as it revisits key concepts and dominant models of analysis and charts cultural change in Greece from the fall of the military junta in 1974 to the beginning of the crisis in 2009. Just as the fall of the junta encouraged a re-examination of the post-civil-war period, so the current economic crisis has prompted a rethink of the metapolitefsi era. Exploring the cultural developments that have taken place during this period, this article focuses on competing notions of culture and engages with the two dreams of the post-junta period: modernization and consumerism. The aim is not to reaffirm oppositions or reverse hierarchies but to rethink cultural dualisms and explore hybrid tensions within a broader political and cultural context.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the central role translation came to play in Greek intellectual production under the Dictatorship of 1967-1974, namely its function as a mechanism of cultural resistance. Methodological tools borrowed from both translation and cultural studies are used in order to demonstrate the socio-political dimension of translation as a gesture of great cultural significance. The first chapter juxtaposes the propagandistic discourse and the restrictive practices of the authoritarian regime to the dissident discourse and the progressive ideas promoted by the group of intellectuals practising cultural resistance. This serves to depict the tension created in the Greek cultural field under the Junta, and explains the reasons causing translation to emerge as an effective means of free expression. The mediated nature of translation, allowing those involved in the industry to avoid full responsibility for translated texts' content, is discussed as the most prominent characteristic that turned translation into the publishing product par excellence associated with Greek cultural resistance against the Junta. The second, third and fourth chapters are devoted to three agents of translation, according to the model of patronage proposed by Lefevere. These agents are firstly those publishers who founded new, small-scale, and progressive publishing houses under the Junta, publishing mostly translations and republications of modem Greek texts. The second group were the directors, editors and contributors working for dissident literary journals first published under the Junta, who used translation extensively to infuse the Greek readership with progressive ideas from abroad. Thirdly, the translators themselves, who worked towards producing translations of major texts, contextualizing them in Greek contemporary reality and showing their relevance to the pressing socio-political issues. These three agents are closely examined in terms of their position in the cultural landscape of the time, as are the discussions the translated texts they produced triggered in intellectual circles, both in Greece and abroad. Therefore, this thesis proposes a systematic mapping of the networks of intellectuals involved in translation at the time, and an insight into the impact translations had on the Greek readership. It also offers a selection of close readings of a number of indicative translated texts, which are drawn from the vast corpus of translations published under the Junta, in order to show the potential these texts had to turn the gesture of translation into a dynamic mechanism of cultural resistance. It is by placing emphasis on the work of individuals, such as Giorgos Chatzopoulos, the publisher of Kalvos editions, Dimitris Kalolcyris, the chief editor of TO TRAM, and Pavlos Zannas, who translated A la recherche du temps perdu during his incarceration as a political prisoner, that this thesis engages with the cultural significance translation acquired during the Junta period in Greece, making it emerge as a prominent

Abstract:

This thesis stakes out to reframe the debates surrounding a widely criticised chapter in the cultural history of modern Greece: the receptions of the classical past under the Dictatorship of 21 April (also known as 'the dictatorship of the Colonels') during the period 1967 to 1973. Informed by the hermeneutics of classical reception studies, I aim to provide a new perspective on the dictatorship, one that focuses on the contemporaneity of its discursive and visual renderings of antiquity, but which departs from a conceptual framework that is dictated by the master narrative of the Cold War (by the polarisations between Right and Left). The project converges on the ideological discourses, educational policies and the mass spectacles of the Colonels, each of which has been designated as fraught with 'ancestoritis' or 'pseudoclassicism' in the literature. In breaking away from value judgments and notions of misappropriation, it is my intention that the project functions as an exercise in a critical levelling with the dictatorship's multifold classicisms. Concomitantly, I propose that in order to better understand the politics of reception of the Aprilians, which have often seemed impenetrable, it is necessary to branch out into more cross-disciplinary methods of enquiry than those that have been employed in the past. My own approach borrows analytical tools from theories of counter-intelligence, cultural studies, political theory, educational sociology and performance studies. With this exploratory patchwork, the present study hopes to contribute toward opening up a field on which it is possible to examine the dictatorship on its own terms, while taking into account the composite articulations of antiquity with power, upward social mobility, economic development, and entertainment and leisure culture in 1960s Greece.

Contrairement à ses homologues occidentaux (le detective novel britannique, le roman de détection français, le roman noir anglo-américain, le giallo italien), le récit policier grec est une terra incognita pour la recherche universitaire.Cette thèse ambitionne de combler cette lacune en s’intéressant à un genre qui, plus que tout autre, a eu mauvais genre en Grèce. Les deux questions qui constituent le fil d’Ariane de notre réflexion tournent autour de l’hellénité du genre (existe-t-il un roman policier grec doté de caractéristiques intrinsèques ?) et de son évolution en diachronie (y a-t-il continuum ou rupture entre l’ancienne et la nouvelle production policière hellénique ?). Notre thèse est construite en trois temps. Notre première partie s’intéresse aux raisons de la naissance tardive du genre en Grèce et à son histoire sur six décennies, de 1953 à 2013. Notre deuxième partie se penche sur la poétique du nouveau roman policier grec (1995-2013) en prenant pour point de comparaison l’ancienne production policière hellénique (1953-1967), celle de Maris et de ses épigones : Chairopoulos, Kakouri, Marakis, Markakis, Papagéorgiou. Au cours de cette deuxième partie, il est surtout question de l’identité générique du nouveau « polar grec » (roman de détection, roman noir, thriller, « polar méditerranéen » ?), des personnages qu’il met en scène et de la thématique de la ville. Enfin, notre troisième partie ambitionne de montrer que le nouveau roman policier hellénique mène une investigation sur l’histoire, la société et l’identité grecques. In opposition to Western crime fiction (British and French detective novels, American hard-boiled crime fictions, Italian giallo), Greek crime fiction is totally unknown in the field of academic research (both in Greece and France).This thesis aims to fill this gap by focusing on a literary genre which, more often than not, has been badly seen by the Greek literary establishment. The two questions which drew our attention revolved around the Hellenic dimension of the genre (is there something as such as Greek crime fiction?) and around the evolution of Greek crime fiction over time (is there a continuity or a major shift between former and recent Greek crime fiction?).Our thesis is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the belated emergence of the genre in Greece and on the history of Greek crime fiction from 1953 to 2013. The second part analyses the poetics of recent crime fiction production in Greece (1995-2013), in comparison to the novels or short stories of Greek writers of the fifties and sixties (authors such as Yannis Maris, Christos Chairopoulos, Athina Kakouri, Andronikos Markakis, Takis Papageorgiou). In our second part, we also try to identify the genre in which Greek crime fiction expresses itself (detective story? Hard-boiled story? Thriller? Mediterranean Noir?). Finally, we analyse the main characters who appear in the plot and the theme of the city. The third part aims at showing that contemporary authors of Greek crime fiction lead an investigation on the history of Greece (and its society) and on Hellenic identity. Abstract:

As transformações na paisagem, no meio-ambiente e nas relações socioespaciais das áreas atingidas pela implementação de Usinas Hidrelétricas na bacia do rio Uruguai, criam uma oportunidade de investigação sobre a implantação de uma Infraestrutura Verde para áreas junto a reservatórios, como um aspecto fundamental no estudo e proposição de modelos de paisagens multifuncionais que contribuam para a conservação dos ecossistemas e de seus processos naturais, e ao mesmo tempo, possibilitem a apropriação e valorização dos recursos paisagístico-ambientais e culturais das margens dos reservatórios hidrelétricos. Assim, o objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado foi avaliar a aplicação do conceito de Infraestrutura Verde na proteção, valorização e aproveitamento paisagístico-ambiental das margens dos reservatórios hidrelétricos propostos para a Bacia do rio Uruguai no seu trecho inteiramente brasileiro , com o estudo de caso específico do trecho do Reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica Itá situado no município de Itá, no oeste do Estado de Santa Catarina. Para este estudo de caso, foi analisada, então, a organização espacial às margens do lago de Itá. Percebe-se, especialmente na borda dágua deste município, a ameaça de um desenvolvimento urbano desvinculado das questões ambientais e históricas de ocupação do território. Este aspecto pode gerar efeitos irreversíveis à estabilidade ambiental e ao potencial paisagístico e cultural da área. Cada vez mais as demandas turísticas são prioritárias nos processos de decisão, contribuindo para a privatização da orla da cidade que não só aprofunda a segregação social, como também traz prejuízos à paisagem e ao meio-ambiente, comprometendo o próprio turismo, que se baseia na atratividade paisagística da área. O cruzamento de informações referentes ao histórico da cidade, à sua situação atual e aos aspectos biofísicos locais culminou num plano paisagístico que visa integrar a cidade com sua orla e harmonizar os conflitos socioambientais identificados, estabelecendo um contínuo natural de espaços vegetados que articula paisagem, cultura e sociedade. A aplicação dos princípios da Infraestrutura Verde para um recorte espacial delimitado do município de Itá pode caracterizar-se como parte de uma estratégia para o aproveitamento e qualificação das potencialidades urbanas, paisagísticas, ambientais e culturais deste município. Mais do que isso, procura identificar oportunidades e indicar caminhos viáveis para um desenvolvimento econômico e social mais justo, que garanta uma qualidade ambiental e sustentabilidade futura, tanto para o reservatório quanto para as áreas naturais, rurais e urbanas de Itá, com a ideia de construir um lugar mais atrativo para se viver, trabalhar e visitar.
The changes in the landscape and environment and socio-spatial relations in areas affected by the implementation of Power Plants in the Uruguay river watershed creates an opportunity for research on the implementation of a Green Infrastructure for areas along the reservoir, as a fundamental aspect in the study and proposing models of multifunctional landscapes. Such models can contribute to the conservation of ecosystems and their natural processes, aiming at their integration with the appropriation and valorization of landscape-environmental and cultural resources at the waterfront of hydroelectric reservoirs. The objective of this master degree thesis was to evaluate the concept of Green Infrastructure in the protection, valorization, environmental and landscape use of the waterfront of hydroelectric reservoirs proposed for the Uruguay River watershed - in the Brazilian section - with the study case of the section of the reservoir of the Itá Power Plant located in the town of Itá in the western state of Santa Catarina. Was outlined also a proposal for the integration of the city, with the lake created from the implementation of the hydroelectric plant. For this case study was analyzed the new spatial organization on the shores of Ita lake. Especially at the city water edge, the threat of urban development released from environmental and historical land use can be seen, bringing irreversible effects to its environmental stability and its environmental and cultural potential. Increasingly the demands of tourism are priorities in decision-making, contributing to an initial process of privatization of the edge of town that not only deepens the social segregation, but also harms the landscape and the environment, affecting tourism itself, which is based on the attractiveness of the landscape area. The overlay of information relating to the historic city, its current situation and its biophysical local aspects lead to a landscape project that aims to integrate the city with its waterfront and to harmonize the social and environmental conflicts identified, emphasizing the idea of continuous vegetated spaces linking up landscape, culture and society. The implementation of principles of Green Infrastructure for a limited spatial area of the city of Itá can be characterized as part of a strategy for use and identification of urban, landscape, environmental and cultural potentialities in that town. More than that, it seeks to identify opportunities and point the way for a viable economic and social development more equitable, ensuring the environmental quality and sustainable future for both the reservoir and to natural, rural and urban areas of Itá, with the idea of building a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

Abstract:

A presente dissertação foca-se no Fundo de Transição Justa, principal instrumento do Mecanismo de Transição Justa, criado pela Comissão Europeia, para auxiliar o processo de conversão ecológica pelo qual a União se propõe a enveredar, através do European Green Deal. Pretende-se apurar se o Fundo de Transição Justa, tal como está formulado1, assegura uma transição efetivamente justa para uma economia verde e circular, sobretudo no que diz respeito à situação Portuguesa, enquanto Estado-membro da UE destinatário de políticas de coesão. Para tal, procedeu-se ao tratamento e análise de conceitos centrais à temática da tese: economia verde e economia circular, transição justa, e coesão europeia. Tendo estabelecido como os conceitos enunciados devem ser interpretados e aplicados ao longo da tese, seguiu-se a identificação dos desafios políticos que a União Europeia enfrenta para executar uma transição ecológica, assim como uma análise à composição e funcionamento do Fundo de Transição Justa, ao que se prevê que venha a ser a sua intervenção em Portugal, e ao seu método de alocação, de acordo com a sua atual formulação2. Com base nas conclusões alcançadas ao longo do corpo da dissertação, esta termina com a resposta negativa, fundamentada, à questão de partida.
This dissertation focuses on the Just Transition Fund, the main instrument of the Just Transition Mechanism, created by the European Commission, to assist the process of ecological conversion that the Union proposes to embark on, through the European Green Deal. The main aim is to ascertain whether the Just Transition Fund, as formulated3, ensures an effectively just transition to a green and circular economy, especially with regard to the Portuguese situation, as an EU Member State that is the recipient of cohesion policies. To this end, we proceeded to the treatment and analysis of concepts central to the theme of the thesis: green economy and circular economy, just transition, and European cohesion. Having established how the aforementioned concepts should be interpreted and applied throughout the thesis, there followed the identification of the political challenges that the European Union faces to execute an ecological transition, as well as an analysis of the composition and functioning of the Just Transition Fund, an analysis regarding what is expected to be its intervention in Portugal, and to its allocation method, according to its current formulation4. Based on the conclusions reached throughout the body of the dissertation, it ends with the substantiated negative answer to the starting question.

Abstract:

The National Urban Parks Policy (2021) seeks the development of green areas of more than 2 hectares in all the cities of Chile, while recognizing that the management and maintenance of urban parks is one of the main challenges. In order to define a methodology for improving the management and operation of parks and green areas, a case study was carried out aimed at identifying good international practices in sustainability models and management of Urban Parks. Based on this analysis, the methodology defines an "ideal model" and seeks to understand how gaps could be solved and efficient management achieved through the systematization of a catalog: institution, administration, financing and uses. This, together with the characterization of community needs and capacities, makes it possible to define a Tool-kit of instruments for the Sustainability and management of Urban Parks adapted to different municipal’s realities and scales of parks. Keywords: Urban Parks, Sustainability, Green Infrastructure, Management La Política Nacional de Parques Urbanos (2021) busca el desarrollo de áreas verdes de más de 2 hectáreas en todas las ciudades de Chile a la vez que reconoce como uno de los principales desafíos la gestión y mantención de los parques urbanos. Con objeto de definir una metodología para el mejoramiento de la gestión y operación de los parques y áreas verdes, se realizó un estudio de casos orientado a identificar las buenas prácticas internacionales en modelos de sustentabilidad y gestión de Parques Urbanos. Sobre esta base, la metodología propone la definición de un “modelo ideal”, y busca comprender cómo se podrían solucionar las brechas para alcanzar una gestión eficiente, a través de la sistematización de las materias abordadas en el catálogo: institucionalidad, administración, financiamiento y usos. Lo anterior, junto con la caracterización de las necesidades y capacidades comunales permite definir un Tool-kit de instrumentos para la sustentabilidad y gestión de Parques Urbanos adaptable a distintas realidades y escalas de parques. Afrontar los retos que plantea el proceso acelerado de urbanización que han venido experimentando las ciudades latinoamericanas en las últimas décadas, mediante una planificación metropolitana basada en infraestructuras verdes, se perfila como una estrategia prioritaria. La creación de parques lineales junto a los cauces y costas es, no sólo sostenible y muy beneficiosa desde los puntos de vista social y ambiental, sino también una estrategia viable y sostenible económicamente en el tiempo, tal y como se demuestra en la regeneración del frente costero de Rosario (Argentina). Mediante el estudio de un caso real se pretende aportar evidencia sobre la idea de que priorizar las operaciones en corredores fluviales y frentes costeros es viable aquí y ahora en el contexto latinoamericano, y que esta priorización puede tener efectos sinérgicos que reviertan las tendencias de degradación urbana que afectan a un gran número de ciudades de la región. Metropolitan planning based on green infrastructure is emerging as a strategic priority in addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization processes experienced by Latin American cities in recent decades. The creation of linear parks along waterways and coastal areas is not only sustainable and highly beneficial from both a social and environmental perspective, but also an economically viable and sustainable strategy over time. The regeneration of the riverfront of the city of Rosario (Argentina) is a good example of this idea. By using a real case study, the aim is to provide evidence on the idea that prioritizing operations in river corridors and waterfronts is feasible here and now in the Latin American context, and that this prioritization can have synergistic effects to reverse the trends of urban decay affecting a large number of cities in the region.

Resumen: En Les trois établissements humains (1945) Le Corbusier, junto con el grupo ASCORAL, describe la fábrica verde como un establecimiento industrial organizado según “una biología de las circulaciones, de la composición de los edificios y de la eficiencia”, que “reinstala de nuevo las condiciones de la naturaleza alrededor del trabajo”. Son palabras importantes, que destacan algunos de los temas cruciales del pensamiento social de principios del siglo XX y sobre los cuales Le Corbusier reflexionó para crear nuevas soluciones arquitectónicas y urbanísticas. El artículo recorre sintéticamente estos aspectos del pensamiento de Le Corbusier a través de sus diferentes modelos urbanos, para detenerse en particular sobre la idea de Fábrica verde de la Ciudad lineal industrial, puesta en práctica en el proyecto de la fábrica de armas en Aubusson (1940), donde el verde, el paisaje, la circulación y los espacios están pensados con una idea de funcionamiento alternativa a la organización del trabajo, alejada de los ritmos mecánicos de la cadena de montaje. Esta concepción es alimentada por referencias culturales y arquitectónicas, entre las cuales figura el pensamiento del sindicalista obrero Hyacinthe Dubreuil, que Le Corbusier traduce en un proyecto para una fábrica que quiere conciliar el maquinismo funcional con la naturaleza a través de soluciones y relaciones compositivas “orgánicas” más que mecánicas. Abstract: In Les trois établissements humains (1945) Le Corbusier, with the ASCORAL group, describes the Green Factory as an industrial establishment organised according to « a biology of circulation, a composition of buildings and efficiency », that « newly reintroduces natural conditions around the workplace ». These are important words that highlight some crucial themes of the social thought of the XX century on which Le Corbusier had reflected a long time in order to create new architectural and urban solutions. The article traces and summarises these particular aspects of the architect's thought process through the different urban models of his studies, to then dwell especially on the idea of the Green Factory and the “linear industrial city ”, applied to the project for the arms factory in Aubusson (1940). Here trees, landscape, circulation and spaces give work a different and alternative meaning that is very distant to the mechanical rhythms of the production line. This concept is nurtured by cultural and architectural references, amongst which figures that of the trade unionist and factory worker Hyacinthe Dubreuil. Le Corbusier translates Dubreuil's thought in a project for a factory that wishes to conciliate functional machinism with nature, by using "organic" compositive solutions and relationships rather than mechanical ones.
