Full textDespite the widespread recognition of the paybacks of “going green” and “going clean”, limited research has focused on the impact of lean-green strategy on firm growth. In this study, we contribute to strategy and environmental sustainability literatures by investigating the possibility that the influence on lean-green strategy and firm growth is driven by different levels of industry competition, managerial power and family ties. Using panel data from 732 firms in four major industrialised economies (the US, Germany, France and the UK), we found that lean-green strategy positively relates to firm growth and this relationship is amplified at higher levels of competition, managerial power and family ties. Theoretical and practical implications of the study are also discussed.

Full textEnvironmental issues are critical for business either as a constraint or an opportunity. Hence, they should be addressed by firms as a strategic priority integrated in their operations strategy. In order to do so, firms need to develop green capabilities and assets that support their green strategies. This paper discusses the green capabilities necessary to develop green innovation initiatives. It presents a framework that structures the relationship between drivers of green operations strategies, firms’ resources and green innovation as a source of competitive advantage. Case study research is used to support and extend the framework. Case study evidences validate the framework, provide additional insights and suggest new lines of research on these topics.

Full textThis case study explores why the strategic positioning of the wall-panel heater, manufactured by Econo-Heat, justifies a green marketing strategy. The primary research objective is to provide Econo-Heat with a coherent marketing strategy framework, based on the outcome of the strategic analysis of the competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater. The following factors form the context of the study: the impact companies have on the environment, the energy crisis and the rising “green economy” in South Africa, and the increased consumer awareness about lifestyle consequences for the environment. The wall-panel heater uses convection-heating technology to warm rooms and has unique selling properties, such as being energy efficient, economical, effective and safe. Other space-heating products found in South Africa do not encapsulate all these qualities in one product. A strategic analysis done of the company revealed that the current competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater is a best-cost strategy. However, based on a literature review, the strategic analysis of the company and an exploration of the small household appliance consumer profile, the study found that the current competitive positioning of the wall-panel heater could be augmented. The combination of factors revealed by this study could be interpreted as push-factors towards the implementation of an applicable green marketing strategy that could support the re-positioning of the wall-panel heater to a broad-differentiated competitive positioning. These factors are the unique selling properties of the wall-panel heater, the lean manufacturing principles of the company, the rising green economy in the country, the energy crisis and the slow recovery from the global financial crisis in South Africa, as well as the unique characteristics of the environmentally-focused consumer. The view is held that green marketing can mitigate mass consumption. The case study suggests a future marketing strategy framework that consists of three combined elements. First, the argument is made that the unique selling properties of the wall-panel heater in combination with the unique operations of the company, against the backdrop of external factors that influence companies and consumers (i.e. the rising green economy and the energy crisis), could be utilised to discover new market space. The concept of “lateral marketing” is suggested as a framework should the company position itself to differentiate along the green dimension. Secondly, the “green marketing strategy matrix” is suggested as a framework to establish the size and greenness of its consumer segment, as well as the ability to differentiate along the green dimension. Lastly, the suggestion is made that the marketing objective of the company (its greenness) can be measured through the application of a “green marketing grid” that leads to innovation and the challenging of consumer behaviour. The combination of these elements is thought to form a coherent green marketing framework that could in future place the product at a strategic and competitive advantage within the space-heating industry.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Manufacturers can gain a competitive advantage through lower production cost, better quality, better efficiencies and being more flexible and dependable than its competitors. Lower production cost can be a result of first-time-right quality products and efficient production processes in terms of throughput. Low production cost is not a destination but a journey where the goalpost will always move as competitors will continuously come up with ideas to lower prices and margins have to be cut in order to stay competitive. This is where manufacturers must come up with initiatives to continuously drive its operational metrics to remain competitive. This research report will explain how Distell's biggest bottling plant, Green Park, successfully introduced Process Control to increase its quality operational metric and a Six Sigma project to reduce downtime to increase its efficiency operational metric to drive its operational costs down. Process Control was introduced as a TOM initiative with a subsequent reduction in rework due to poor quality (thousands) from R1 585 to R484. This contributed to 'first-time-right' production, better efficiencies and not tying up valuable production time with reworks. The Six Sigma principles were used on a production line to introduce initiatives to reduce changeovers and unplanned downtime to improve its GEE. This initiative has a projected benefit of R687 (thousands). The report also indicated that a 1% increase in Green Park's overall GEE will result in 1% saving of production hours resulting in a 1% saving of variable cost. This will result in an OEE of 63% that will save 226 hours and R410(thousands).

Full textResults indicate that the PRC presents accommodative structures that are compatible with those found in Quebec, but an inappropriate level of protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs). This scenario gives the PRC a certain advantage since most local firms are able to reproduce foreign technologies without being constrained by issues of intellectual property. Combining theoretical and practical approaches, the thesis uncovers that accommodative conditions do not supersede the question of IPRs when attempting to ensure transfers. Even though the current state of these factors affects the nature of the agreements, the environmental aspect of these technologies seems to facilitate the transactions.

With the global warming, people are considering more about environment. After Freeman’s book published in 1984, the stakeholder concept was prosperous. In this study, we investigate the antecedent role of stakeholders on green innovation. Then we explored whether a firm implements green innovation can influence its environmental and firm performance. In this study, we wanted to examine the differences between service and manufacturing industry. We conducted an empirical research within hotels, logistics, contractors, photoelectric, computer peripherals and automobile manufacturing industries. Due to the small sample size and the response between service and manufacturing industry was no significant different, we combined service and manufacturing data. Overall, this study analyzes the data we received 202 respondents from six industries. We adopted SPSS and Partial Least Square (PLS) to analyze our data. The research findings indicated that external stakeholders’ pressure and employees’ pressure can promote firms to adopt green innovation. Moreover, firms who implement green innovation will generate better environmental and firm performance.
