Abstract:
Nowadays, human beings’ relationships take many forms. People are either parents, friends, colleagues, partners, lovers etc. As far as lovers are concerned, we sometimes observe excesses in their interactions. However, not everybody experiences love in the same way. Love, for some is joy, happiness while other people regard it as source of problems and sufferance. In Corneille’s Le Cid, Rodrigue and Chimène are paralyzed by love and suffering, while Romeo and Juliette get to the capital sacrifice for their intensive and polemical love affair in Shakespeare’s Romeo in Juliette. This study aims at exploring the concept of obsessive love and its consequences through the characters of Graham Green’s The End of the Affair. To succeed in this study apart from books on the selected topic, I have used psychoanalysis as literary theory to access the issue. I examined the difference between obsessive love and true love. Of the results I came up with I can briefly say but a few that obsession can be destructive namely for the obsessed. It can also negatively affect the other members of the family tissue. Obsessive love unfortunately often replaces true love. Ways and means are suggested to cope with any sorts of love.

Abstract:
During the archaeological excavations in Cape Ploča conducted from 1996 to 1998, numerous personal items were found besides the ceramics, including eight engraved gems. One of them, worked in the intaglio technique, is made of carnelian and oval shaped, and for the lack of analogies hitherto interpreted as a “highly stylized chimera”. The article brings new insights that are primarily based on stylistic analysis and iconographic reinterpretation. The intaglio’s origin has been redefined: instead of the previous assumption about its Egyptian provenance, the author has identified it as stemming from central Italy. Moreover, a new date of origin has been proposed, namely the 2nd century BC, which complements the hypothesis on Greek seafarers as the visitors of Diomedes’ shrine and, more precisely, the inhabitants of Greater Greece as its potential users.

Abstract:
Scientists today are intensively seeking alternatives to petrochemical materials. Among others, lignin is a promising candidate because it is available in large quantities while its chemical structure makes its use possible in a variety of chemical reactions. Lignin, received by numerous methods from various feedstocks, is a promising material for the synthesis of many products like active carbon, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, surfactants, phenolic chemicals, etc. In this paper, the potential of using Biolignin – a trademarked organosolv lignin from straw prepared by Compagnie Industrielle de la Matière Végétale (CIMV; Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) – in the synthesis of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins was studied by CHIMAR HELLAS S.A. (Kalamaria, Greece). Before its use, Biolignin was further purified and subjected to mechanical treatment for the reduction of its particle size in order to increase its reactivity. The effectiveness of the treatment was verified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements that were carried out by SYNPO Company (Pardubice, Czech Republic). Resol phenolic resins were prepared with various substitution levels of phenol up to 80%. However, their synthesis process was smooth only up to the substitution level of 50%. The properties of the resins were determined with typical lab analysis. Their thermal behavior was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements that were conducted by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. Their bonding ability was evaluated by CHIMAR HELLAS via their application in the production of plywood panels of three layers that were prepared following a simulation of the industrial process. The panels were tested for their properties according to the relevant European standards, while their performance relative to fire was studied with cone calorimetry measurements that were performed by the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LIWC; Riga, Latvia). All results were compared with that of a typical PF resin. It was found that the particle size of lignin affects the performance of the resins, while lignin-based PF resins are suitable for the production of plywood panels and have somewhat better performance relative to fire than typical PF resins. This study has been performed within the framework of the European project BIOCORE (biocommodity refinery for biofuels, chemical intermediates, polymers and materials).

Abstract:
Abstract. This study examines the uncertainties on air quality modeling associated with the integration of wildfire emissions in chemistry-transport models (CTMs). To do so, aerosol concentrations during the summer of 2007, which was marked by severe fire episodes in the Euro-Mediterranean region especially in the Balkans (20–31 July, 24–30 August 2007) and Greece (24–30 August 2007), are analyzed. Through comparisons to observations from surface networks and satellite remote sensing, we evaluate the abilities of two CTMs, Polyphemus/Polair3D and CHIMERE, to simulate the impact of fires on the regional particulate matter (PM) concentrations and optical properties. During the two main fire events, fire emissions may contribute up to 90 % of surface PM2.5 concentrations in the fire regions (Balkans and Greece), with a significant regional impact associated with long-range transport. Good general performances of the models and a clear improvement of PM2.5 and aerosol optical depth (AOD) are shown when fires are taken into account in the models with high correlation coefficients. Two sources of uncertainties are specifically analyzed in terms of surface PM2.5 concentrations and AOD using sensitivity simulations: secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from intermediate and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/S-VOCs) and emissions' injection heights. The analysis highlights that surface PM2.5 concentrations are highly sensitive to injection heights (with a sensitivity that can be as high as 50 % compared to the sensitivity to I/S-VOC emissions which is lower than 30 %). However, AOD which is vertically integrated is less sensitive to the injection heights (mostly below 20 %) but highly sensitive to I/S-VOC emissions (with sensitivity that can be as high as 40 %). The maximum statistical dispersion, which quantifies uncertainties related to fire emission modeling, is up to 75 % for PM2.5 in the Balkans and Greece, and varies between 36 % and 45 % for AOD above fire regions. The simulated number of daily exceedance of World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for PM2.5 over the considered region reaches 30 days in regions affected by fires and ∼10 days in fire plumes, which is slightly underestimated compared to available observations. The maximum statistical dispersion (σ) on this indicator is also large (with σ reaching 15 days), showing the need for better understanding of the transport and evolution of fire plumes in addition to fire emissions.

Abstract. Emission of non-methane Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) to the atmosphere stems from biogenic and human activities, and their estimation is difficult because of the many and not fully understood processes involved. In order to narrow down the uncertainty related to VOC emissions, which negatively reflects on our ability to simulate the atmospheric composition, we exploit satellite observations of formaldehyde (HCHO), an ubiquitous oxidation product of most VOCs, focusing on Europe. HCHO column observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) reveal a marked seasonal cycle with a summer maximum and winter minimum. In summer, the oxidation of methane and other long-lived VOCs supply a slowly varying background HCHO column, while HCHO variability is dominated by most reactive VOC, primarily biogenic isoprene followed in importance by biogenic terpenes and anthropogenic VOCs. The chemistry-transport model CHIMERE qualitatively reproduces the temporal and spatial features of the observed HCHO column, but display regional biases which are attributed mainly to incorrect biogenic VOC emissions, calculated with the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosol from Nature (MEGAN) algorithm. These "bottom-up" or a-priori emissions are corrected through a Bayesian inversion of the OMI HCHO observations. Resulting "top-down" or a-posteriori isoprene emissions are lower than "bottom-up" by 40% over the Balkans and by 20% over Southern Germany, and higher by 20% over Iberian Peninsula, Greece and Italy. We conclude that OMI satellite observations of HCHO can provide a quantitative "top-down" constraint on the European "bottom-up" VOC inventories.

Abstract:
In embryogenesis the skeletal myogenesis takes place in somites after the myogenic regulatory factor (MRF) activation. This process depends on environmental cues. Out of MRF, the transcription factors Pax3 and Pax7 which belong to the same factor family are also involved in myogenesis. They are both expressed in somites and neural tube. Their somitic influence from the neural tube is poorly documented. We demonstrate that the neural Pax3 upregulation leads to inactivation of the MRF MyoD and Myf5, and of the Wnt11 gene in the somites. The neural Pax7 upregulation only leads to Wnt11 and Sim1 misregulation. The neural downregulation of Pax3 has no effects about somites. When Pax3 is totally absent in neural tube through Pax3 deletion, Myf5 is no more activated in somites. The neural downregulation of Pax7 leads to the misregulation of Sim1 and Wnt11. It seems that the neural Pax3 acts on epaxial somite (via Myf5, MyoD, and Wnt11) and Pax7 on epaxial and hypaxial somite(via Wnt11 and Sim1). Our results must do accept that Pax3 and Pax7 influence somitic myogenesis from the neural tube. Otherwise we can induce in neural cells the ectopic expression of myogenic genes (MyoD, Wnt11, and Sim1). Consequently we propose a new scheme about the neural tube/somite interactions

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis work concerns the synthesis of 5,10 single and bis-strapped porphyrin ligands (6, 11, 8i and 14i) bearing an overhung carboxylic acid group with/without an additional functional group (cyano and pyridine). The 5,10 meso linkage promotes a flexibility of the strap which allows the carboxylic acid group to be in two identified positions (in/out). The synthesis and characterization of the compounds are discussed in details, and the coordination of the ligands (6, 11, and 8i) with metals Zn(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and Bi(III) have been investigated. In the case of Zn(II), five-coordinated metal in a square pyramidal geometry, the metal was stabilized by either an intramolecular carboxylic acid group or an exogenous molecule (DMSO or H2O). In the case of Hg(II), both monometallic and bimetallic species were obtained where for lead, two monometallic species were formed in which Pb(II) is coordinated from the same / opposite side of the strap with different ratios. Finally, Bi(III) promotes a new second sphere of coordination which is responsible for the side selective insertion of the metal. Beside, a transmetalation process speeds up the kinetic insertion of bismuth. In addition, the presence of a cyano group in the α position of the carboxylic acid group creates a steric effect on coordination (in case of Pb(II)) which forces the metal to coordinate from the opposite side of the strap

When copolymerizing -aminoacids-NCA in water at pH 6. 5, the formation of hydrosoluble copolypeptides was observed. That proves that the concept described by the primary pump for peptide synthesis is valid. During the copolymerization, the competitive formation of hydrophobic peptides with narrow molar mass distribution was observed. These peptides can be easily separated from the reaction medium. In the second part of this work, we used this observation for synthesizing original nanomaterials with auto-controlled structures (namely the dendrigraft polylysines, DGPK). The auto-control of the structure and the reproducibility in the synthesis were ensured the hydrophobicity and the precipitation of the intermediate compounds obtained at each generation. The DGPK were characterized by different techniques such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, capillary electrophoresis, size exclusion chromatography coupled to a double or a triple detection, NMR, and Taylor diffusion analysis. DGPK are highly branched materials with physico-chemical behaviour close to dendrimers of functionality 3 (exponential growth of the molar mass and linear variation of the hydrodynamic radius with the generation, maximum of intrinsic viscosity for the fourth generation)

Abstract:
This chapter covers King Ferdinand's planned series of Levantine conquests stretching from Egypt through the Holy Land to Greece, Turkey, and eastward into Asia. While the planned conquests never attained fruition, the chapter provides an analysis for the legal arguments upon which they were predicated. It also describes King Ferdinand's conquest of the kingdom of Naples, where he had obtained the title to the defunct crusader kingdom of Jerusalem. The seemingly symbolic title to Jerusalem served as the foundation for the legal arguments mentioned in the chapter on how King Ferdinand crafted a just war against non-Christian people both in the Mediterranean and beyond. The chapter also talks about the religious politics of the Mediterranean basin that played a vital role in the formulation of the legal doctrines that were subsequently applied in other spheres of expansion, allowing Ferdinand to portray himself as an evangelical prince and imbuing Spanish conquests in other regions with legal and moral legitimacy.
