Abstract:
The present study aims at analyzing the narrative structure of the famous short story “The Gift of the Magi” by implementing Greimas’s (1966) Actantial Model. “The Gift of the Magi” is written by O. Henry. It is quite enigmatic to find out the real subject of the story as both Della and Jim seem to be the subject and object at the same time. The Actantial model of Greimas is a wonderful framework to solve this puzzle. Therefore, the study tries to identify the real ‘subject’ of the story, analyzing the text of the story by applying Greimas’ model of Actantial. Not only this, but the study also identifies the other actants’ roles such as the object, the helper, the opponent, the sender, and the receiver in the story, their contribution to the narrative structure, the character and non-character actants and their role in the development of the plot. The textual analysis of the narrative, by the implementation of Greimas’ model, shows that Della is the real ‘subject’ of the story, Jim the object and the receiver both, the non-character actant ‘Christmas’ as the sender, Della’s passion of love and sacrifice as the helpers and her poverty as the opponent.

Abstract:
This article focuses on applying the two of the narrative syntax theories proposed by Algirdas Greimas to find the basic structures of fairy tales, namely the Narrative Quest Model and the Actantial Model, to analyze Hunger Games movie. As Greimas’ claims to have found theories which are applicable to all narrative structures, the writer is interested to see whether the two chosen theories are indeed applicable to scheme in the movie. The theories are not used to explore the theme or the message that underlies the story; instead it focuses mainly to find the basic structure of the narrative as trajectory and the schema or paradigmatic connection among the major elements in the story. The research uses descriptive qualitative approach in which the data are obtained through a series of thorough reading before the story is redacted into a summary. Afterwards, the summary is divided into smaller narrative units using the Narrative Quest Model and the major elements and characters of the story are selected based on their functions in Greimas’ Actantial Model.

AbstractA short story is one of the literary works that is not very long and generally focuses on a single event with one or two characters. This paper tries to describe the narrative structure in the story ツルの恩返し. Source of data uses short story ツルの恩返し, taken from https://www.wasabi-jpn.com. The research approach uses structuralism especially Greimas’s actantial scheme and the functional narrative model. The results show that the short story ツルの恩返し formed by one functional narrative model and 6 actual schemes. The functional narrative model consists of initial situation, transformation stage (qualifying test, main test, glorifying test), and the final situation. From 6 actan schemes, there are 4 complete actantial schemes and 2 incomplete actantial schemes (actantial schemes without opponent). There are 6 acting roles that make up the short story ツルの恩返し;sender, receiver, subjects, objects,  helpers, and opponent .

Abstract:
Through the characters of Zhenya and Boris, the film Nelyubov (2017) explores the issue of a toxic marriage. The story's theme reflects the complexities of the characters' relationships and the resulting problems. This theme adds intrigue to the film's problem articulation, particularly how the film's conflict can be constructed. Accordingly, this study seeks to identify the actant schemes created in the Nelyubov film. This study examines the location of individuals in the film using Algirdas Julien Greimas' Actantial Model theory. Further, this article employs Mills' Discourse Analysis and Smith's Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results indicate representations for the subject, object, helper, opposer, sender, and receiver in the Nelyubov film, allowing for the fulfillment of the three kinds of axis: the axis of desire, the axis of power, and the axis of transmission/knowledge. The film's subject is Zhenya, and the object is the happiness he seeks.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze plot structure in Collins’ The Hunger Games. There are several questions that researcher wants to find, what the elements of plot are, how do the elements of plot compose the plot structure of the story, and what kind of plot is applied in the novel. This study is a qualitative analysis by applying A.J. Greimas approach. The data were collected by reading, identifying, interpreting and analyzed using the approach and theories which used in this study by using actants. The result of this study were the elements of plot consist of beginning, problem of the story, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. To find out the main plot structure, this study classifies the function of each character into six actants, they are sender, receiver, subject, object, helper and opponent. Finally, the researcher concluded what kind of plot and how the ending of the novel is. The plot of the novel is dramatic or cronological plot because the story through in chronological order. In addition, the novel is closed plot because the problem of the story is solved.

Abstract:
Class distinction has been an ongoing phenomenon throughout human history and has become particularly evident with industrialization. Marx's Theory of Classes explains how modes of production give rise to class distinction. For this reason, this study examines Marx's concept of class distinction and how the social effects of class distinction and the roles of ruler and ruled are reflected in cinema. By analyzing the film "Snowpiercer" directed by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, the impact of cinema on the social structure and its semantic structures are discussed. In the study, Marx's Theory of Classes and Greimas' Actantial Model were employed to analyze the film. "Snowpiercer" deals with class distinction as a fundamental theme. The film focuses on the impact of class distinctions on society, and the roles of ruler and ruled within class distinction. The semiotic analysis of the film is based on Greimas' Actantial Model. This analysis aims to reveal the semantic structures of the movie and presents the findings.

Abstract:
This study aims to describe the actantial schema and functional structure of the German fairy tale "Die Gänsemagd". The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. This method is used to determine the structure of actantial and functional models in the German fairy tale "Die Gänsemagd (The Goose Girl)" based on A. J. Greimas's theory. The data source in this study is a collection of German fairy tales by Brother Grimm (Deutsche Märchen von den Brüdern Grimm, Hauff, Beschstein und anderen) published by Artia Verlag, Prague in 1986. This study's data covered the unit of fairy tales that materialize in paragraphs, dialogues, and narratives of characters that show various conflicts following the research's objectives. The data were collected using documentation study techniques. Data analysis started by identifying the story's actantial and functional structure by reading the entire story content. After that, the actantial structure is determined by analyzing the characters' actions in the story to find their roles. The actantial structures that are determined are subject, object, opponent, assistant, and receiver. The analysis is continued by compiling a functional model by analyzing the story movement, which is divided into three parts; initial situation, transformation, and final situation. Based on the results of Greimas' narrative analysis of the German fairy tale "Die Gänsemagd," it can be concluded that there are two actantial schemas whose characters have several functions and roles in each schema. The first actantial schema consists of a subject, object, sender, receiver, assistant, with no opponent. Meanwhile, the second actantial schema consists of all the actants, namely, subject, object, sender, receiver, assistant, and opponent. The functional structure found in the story is the initial situation, the transformation (proficiency test stage, the main stage, and the glorious stage), and the final situation.

Abstract:
Being the contemporary of Roland Barthes and also prominent scholar in French Semiotics, and also known for founding the Parisian School of Semiotics, Algirdas Julien Greimas, with his formal trainings in structural linguistics shaped the theory of signification by adding plastic semiotics. Indeed, his masterly contributions that had given a new direction in the study of narratives include the famous semiotics square, actantial model, concepts of isotopy, narrative programme and the semiotics of the natural world. However, the actantial model developed by Greimas in 1966 provided an analytical tool for studying various actions carried out by different actors (“actants”) in a real or fictional story. Although developed from the suggestion given by Vladimir Propp that his [Propp’s] seven dramatis personae such as ‘villain’, ‘donor’, ‘helper’, ‘princess/sought-for-person’, ‘dispatcher’, ‘hero’, and ‘false hero’ could be reduced further, Greimas proposed the actantial narrative schema with six actants that manifest their movements of relationship along the line founded on knowledge and power. However, the ‘false hero’ as one of the dramatis personae could be seen as important as, and as similar to, others in the narrative structure, its modality is quite interesting, and it tends to warrant an academic discussion to contemplate its morphology. Taking few examples from folktales and drawing insights from the Greimasian actantial model, this study presents the semiotic account of the ‘false hero’ to highlight the fact that the ‘false hero’ occupies a significant place not only within the real and fictional stories but also in daily life, by explaining the veridictory modality structure of truth and falseness. By drawing examples from folktales, this article comprehends the nature of the ‘false hero’, who is neither a hero nor a villain, for providing a grammatical framework that facilitates our smooth handling of the notion that is indispensably occupying our everyday life. Therefore, the significance of this paper is that it is lessening our efforts to decipher the nature of different characters in different forms of narratives and their presentations in different media.

Abstract:
The study analyses Sohni Mahiwal, the renowned Punjabi folktale, by applying Greimas Actantial model for structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to explore the narrative structure and discover the character functions based on the model. Folktales are considered the simplest and oldest form of stories embedded in the local cultures. They broadly refer to orally transmitted, traditional narratives that carry cultural information. The findings show that all the major actantial categories proposed by Greimas such as subject, object, sender, receiver, helper, and opponent have been depicted in the selected folktale. The analysis revealed that many characters were found involved in several actant classes simultaneously. Structural analysis of the folktale uncovered two parallel acts/episodes. The parallelism in the contents of two acts of the tale serves a didactic function at the socio-cultural level besides entertaining the readers/ listeners proving the strength of true love. As far as the function is concerned, the tale successfully validates the culturally imparted message that the individuals who transgress the social norms are destined to perish.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of the story of Maryam in the Qur'an using the narrative semiotics theory developed by A.J. Greimas. The story of Maryam, as found in Surah Ali-'Imran (3:35-37, 42-44), Surah At-Tahrim (66:12), Surah Al-Anbiya (21:91), and Surah Maryam (19:16-34), contains profound moral, spiritual, and theological messages. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with a literature review method. Greimas' actantial model is applied to identify actantial functions such as sender, receiver, subject, object, helper, and opponent within the narrative structure. The analysis results indicate that the story of Maryam reflects the spiritual struggle and steadfast faith of a woman chosen by Allah to undertake a significant role in the divine plan. The narrative structure of this story embodies values of submission to Allah, sincerity, and deep faith. By applying Greimas' theory, the meaning within Maryam's story can be analyzed systematically and comprehensively, offering a new perspective in understanding the spiritual narratives of the Qur'an. This study contributes to enriching Qur'anic exegesis through the narrative semiotics approach, which is rarely used in analyzing sacred texts, and provides a more structured understanding of the moral and spiritual messages in the story of Maryam.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION. Philological study of texts is a new step in studying the entire repertoire of the fairy tale fund in a wide comparison with the texts of other works. Philologists, writers, screenwriters use the concept of V.Ya. Propp and the methodology of A.J. Greimas in modern text theory. Close attention is paid to the concept of actant, actant model and basic functions in fairy tales, which are important for constructing the plot of any text, building a scheme of functional characters. The purpose of the study is to compare the characters of the author’s fairy tale by P.P. Bazhov “The Malachite Box” with the Ural folk tale “The Stone Bowl”.MATERIALS AND METHODS. By means of functional analysis, based on the concept of the famous Russian philologist, folklorist V.Ya. Propp (1895–1970) and actantial analysis, developed by the French linguist, philologist A.J. Greimas (1917–1992), we can see the structure of the fairy tale text, identify its actantial model and describe its specificity, which reflects the culture of the people.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. The results obtained during the study have added to the body of achievements in folklore studies and linguacultural studies. The philological method of identifying actant models used in the work allows scientists to better see the cultural specificity of the Ural people. The methods of work can be used to study not only folklore texts, but also for authorial works.CONCLUSION. The research of V.Ya. Propp and A.J. Greimas allows us in our time, using the seven-character scheme of V.Ya. Propp and the actant model of A.J. Greimas, to analyze any text, designating the meanings of actants and their functions. The conclusions of this study can be used in the process of teaching the Russian language in classes on folklore and philological analysis of the text.

Abstract:
The research attempted to examine the contribution and relevance of structuralism as a theory, method, and paradigm, especially in the study of feminist literary criticism in the novel entitled The Story of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith. Many researchers had scrutinized the novel from various approaches, such as socio-cultural, historical political, and post-colonial studies. However, analysis using actantial models had not been conducted and reported in scholarly journals. The qualitative research utilized textual analysis that practiced a narrative semiotic approach proposed by Greimas. The research used the actantial model proposed by Greimas to evaluate the narrative’s deep structure so as to reveal gender stereotypes of male and female characters in the novel, written in 1906. Although the female character appeared as the main character, she was portrayed as sentimental, emotional, weak, and dependent on the male characters’ help. In contrast, the male characters were shown as dominant figures. They were portrayed as physically strong, rational, thoughtful, and able to prioritize the interests of the wider community and independently achieve the goals they wanted. It is found that the discussion about gender stereotypes in literary works is still relevant to be carried out, especially in literary works, because several kinds of research showcase that the portrayal of stereotyped characters has an unfavorable impact on children’s cognitive and affective development.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss what kinds of messages about the risks of polydrug use are mediated in YouTube video blogs and on what kinds of norms and values do the vloggers base these messages. Design/methodology/approach The data consist of 12 YouTube videos where vloggers share their own experiences of the risks and harms of polydrug use. In the analysis, the actantial model of Greimas’ theory of structural semiotics was applied. Findings Two main types of videos were identified – sobriety and controlled use – where polydrug use has different meanings. In sobriety videos, polydrug use is presented as the heavy use of multiple substances. In the videos dealing with controlled use, polydrug use is taken as the combining of certain substances. Whereas the sobriety videos emphasized total abstinence from all substances due to their destructiveness, the videos about controlled use emphasized risk awareness when combining substances. Despite modern digital media and a new generation operating in this space, the messages of the risks of polydrug use mainly repeat those of familiar discourses. Originality/value This paper offers an analytical insight into the ways in which the risks of polydrug use are conceptualized in a YouTube context that is increasingly gaining a foothold among the youth. Greimas’ actantial model offers a fruitful tool to find semiotic meanings that hide under the surface. The model has not been applied in previous drug research.

Abstract:
The tale of the Sleeping Beauty is still one of the well-loved and popular fairy tales among children, especially girls. The story has been adapted into various versions but has not changed essentially—it is always about a princess saved from a curse, about good versus bad. Due to the simple nature of the story, most literary researchers no longer deem this story a valuable source of data anymore although there are still more to uncover from the fairy tale. This study attempts to examine how the female characters in the story are represented from the structural semiotics perspective using two theories proposed by A. J. Greimas, namely the Actantial Model and the Narrative Trajectory. The qualitative method is applied to interpretatively divide the story into different major events, from which an actantial diagram and a trajectory can be made before the representation is drawn. The findings suggest that the female characters in the story are mostly placed as an object of the actantial diagram and a goal in the trajectory; this means that the story puts the female characters in passive roles that comply to the traditional gender roles and female stereotypes.

It also studies sundry mises-en-scène of LDE at the USA Chamizal National Memorial, the Almagro Corral de Comedias, the New York Repertorio Español, and, as the zarzuela Doña Francisquita, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse. LDE, although farcical, should be read and staged as a “middle” Lopean comedy: between Plautine jocularity and Terentian sobriety.

Abstract:
In this paper, our purpose is to demonstrate that the mythologizing symbolic image plays an important role in the advertising construction, leaving, by extension, its mark on the entire cultural and mental landscape of the contemporary world. Among the traditional mythical structures, several models which are able to steer imagination and reading, but above all, enable performative reflexes influencing consumer's actions, are frequently circulated in the advertising field; they are representative and effective, thus creating fantasy around consumer goods, by inciting desire to buy among customers who can relate to the story portrayed. We are also looking into models of narrative analysis that are most suited to advertising storytelling, focusing mainly on the actantial model proposed by A.J. Greimas and the model developed by Claude Bremond, which bring complementary perspectives: Greimas' model reveals that a product may be either an adjuvant/helper or an opponent in fulfilling a desire (of the consumer), whereas the Bremondian model integrates the product-consumer relationship in a procedural framework which is influenced by the transformation of the states of degradation and amelioration in order to fulfil a desire.

Abstract:

In tile art, one of the world-famous Turkish Handicrafts, a wide variety of patterns are used on tile objects. The most common of these, after the tulip pattern, is the naturalist clove pattern. Different meanings were assigned to this pattern within the boundaries of form, color and design. Identification and perception of these meanings have a special place within the frame of the culture that they relay. In this present study the fields of meaning of the clove pattern frequently used in tile decoration arts among Turkish handicrafts were tried to be determined. By taking Greimas' Actantial Model as the theoretical model, in the study visual discourse analysis of the clove pattern will be made.

The present article is part of a larger project which investigates the occupational status of professional translators. The studies conducted so far within the framework of the project have been based on questionnaires and mainly been of a quantitative nature. The present article reports on a qualitative analysis of the wealth of comments which the translators who participated in the questionnaire studies wrote in response to an open invitation to comment on anything in relation to the study and its subject. In order to structure the translators’ comments, we have relied on Algirdas-Julien Greimas’ actantial model. Themes identified as important facilitators of or barriers to status included translator training, recognition of translators’ expertise, authorization, level of professionalization and income.

Being a part of a certain culture makes a literary work is not immune from its influence. This applies also to literary works which deliver stories from the past, Pramoedya Ananta Toer's The King, The Witch and The Priest for example. To confirm the influence, this article would like to see the structure of myth in this story with the help of Greimas' Actantial Model. Under the approach of structuralism, finding the six actants of some important actions selected from the plot analysis is conducted to discover the pattern. The pattern then is used to understand the structure of mythfound in the story. This study results on the existence of the structure of myth whereby the good one always wins at the end of the story, no matter how powerful the evil is.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify the similarities and differences of Teahouse painting of Rustum and Sohrab, based on Shahnameh and its poem utilizing intersemiotic approach. The corpus of this investigation is the Rustum and Sohrab painting by Mansour Vafaei and the translated version of it by Mathew Arnold. The triadic model of Peirce and actantial model of Greimas are employed in this research as the major theoretical frameworks, in order to analyze the signs and specify their related representamens, objects and interpretations that would direct the audience to desired signification. This intersemiotic research intends to bridge the gaps of literature and translation, in the process of interference of meaning through media of painting and poetry. The researcher attempts to accomplish a new insight by examining the intricate techniques of Persian traditional Teahouse painting codes and exploring the possible significations of the signs of the Rustum and Sohrab story.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a qualitative and descriptive study of textual genre, based on the epistemological concept of Socio-Discursive Interactionism. As a study concerning language and identity, it focuses on identity construction of the bank, its customers, and products in seven Portuguese bank pamphlets. Being aware of the pamphlets’ multimodal nature, the author employs the analytical model to examine both their verbal and non-verbal components. The model incorporates four theoretical approaches: the notion of personal deictic markers proposed by Socio-Discursive Interactionism, Greimas’ actantial model, symbolic attribute and suggestive processes, as well as the ideational and interpersonal functions proposed by the Grammar of Visual Design. The analysis presents three-fold conclusion. Firstly, the three major stakeholders’ identity in the pamphlets under analysis is multimodally constructed. Secondly, construction of the said identity is both denotative and connotative. Thirdly, besides relating advertising ideology in general, such identity construction also incorporates social meaning of the three major textual participants in the data already analyzed.

Abstract:
Anime can, to a certain extent, symbolize the growth of Japanese feminism as one of the most significant literary creative forms in contemporary Japan. Although the trend of female characterization in anime in recent years is diversified, there is a lack of independent female characters that break through the traditional gender division. A hugely popular anime called Violet Evergarden in 2018 tells the story of a young girl named Violet who lost her arms in a war, but fortunately regained robotic arms and started to help others write letters. In the process, she, who once knew only combat skills, gradually learned to express her emotions. Her story is a journey of seeking out the true meaning of love. The anime adaptation focuses on her growth and inner self, breaking the gender stereotype and showing Girl Power. This essay examines the feminist implications of Violet Evergarden, revealing its role in the growth of Japanese feminism by using Greimas' actantial model and the semiotic square following structuralism's theoretical thinking.

Abstract:
The continuous diversification of new narrative tools due to technological advancements highlights the significance of content and form issues in fiction, as these tools gain social functionality. Each new tool possesses distinct features that imbue it with meaning. The strong relationship between technological tools and society brings the social benefits of these tools to the forefront. Among the hotly debated topics is the impact of virtual reality technologies on communication. Virtual reality creates an immersive experience, enveloping individuals within compelling narratives. Consequently, understanding the structure of the existing content becomes crucial, particularly in the transformation of social issues into experiential Virtual Reality (VR) narratives. This study focuses on exploring the connection between virtual reality technologies and society, as well as the potential of VR content to contribute to social benefit. The chosen sample for analysis is “Fight Back VR,” which employs a 360-degree narrative format to address gender-related themes. The determined sample is analyzed through Greimas’ Actantial Model, which is a structural semantics analysis method. The results indicate that VR’s effects, such as immersion, presence, embodiment, and experiential engagement, enhance the narrative content, converting it into semantic benefit. “Fight Back VR” addresses gender issues through the lens of women’s experiences and positions the participant as a heroic figure. The participant’s struggle within the narrative creates a sense of action, which plays an educational role both within the story and the individual lives of the participants. Thus, although virtual reality narratives create a personalized experiential space, they also embody the concept of “experiential activism” through their narrative subject matter and distinctive features. Because it positions the participant as a part of the story, and even as a guide.

Abstract:
<p>This article presents empirical research conducted with French speaking adults studying for a diploma. Their training took place mainly in e-learning. The goal of this research was to identify and explain the processes of influence existing between two specific dimensions: the degree of openness of the components of the e-learning situation and students’ self-regulated behaviors in the management of these components. This research was based on the socio-cognitive theory of self-regulation (Bandura, 1986; Schunk & Zimmerman, 2007; Zimmerman, 2002) and on a theoretical definition of the notion of “openness” (Jézégou, 2005). It applied the “actantial model” (Greimas, 1966; Hiernaux, 1977) for analyzing data collected while using a specific validated instrument of assessment of openness (Jézégou, 2010a). The main results of this empirical work are the role played by three psychological dimensions in the influence processes identified. More empirical study is required to confirm their validity.</p>

He observes the dangers inherent in this effort: words can break, can become simply unintelligible. Such broken words can no longer function within the fixed constraints of grammar and thus ‘will not stay in place, | Will not stay still’. A.J. Greimas in Structural semantics defined an ‘actantial’ model of language:If we recall that functions in traditional syntax are but roles played by words – the subject being ‘the one who performs the action’, the object ‘the one who suffers it’ – then according to such a conception, the proposition as a whole becomes a spectacle to which homo loquens treats himself.

Abstract:
This study closely examines the character of Alita in the film Alita: Battle Angel to determine whether she represents women’s empowerment. Heroines are often portrayed as powerful and independent figures who challenge traditional gender roles. To analyze Alita's character, this study utilizes Greimas' actantial model of narrative structure and Donna Haraway’s concept of the cyborg from A Cyborg Manifesto. Greimas' model helps dissect the narrative roles and relationships, while Haraway's concept aids in understanding the intersection of technology and gender. The analysis reveals that Alita embodies certain elements of women’s empowerment. She displays physical strength, resilience, and a sense of autonomy that are typically associated with empowered female characters. Alita's journey of self-discovery and her fight against oppressive forces resonate with themes of independence and empowerment. However, a deeper examination of the film's narrative structure and character dynamics uncovers underlying patriarchal elements. Despite Alita's strengths, the film presents a technological hierarchy where male characters, particularly Dr. Dyson Ido and Vector, hold significant control and influence over Alita and other female characters. This dynamic suggests that while Alita is portrayed as a powerful figure, her agency is still constrained within a male-dominated technological framework. Furthermore, the film's depiction of Alita as a cyborg complicates the narrative of empowerment. Haraway's cyborg theory suggests that cyborgs can transcend traditional gender boundaries and challenge patriarchal structures. Yet, in Alita: Battle Angel, the cyborg nature of Alita is used to emphasize her otherness and dependence on male characters for her identity and purpose. This reinforces traditional gender hierarchies rather than subverting them.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recognition of the central place that the concept of tragedy holds in the historical understanding of culture and society, this paper features an analysis of its presence, current state, and value in the digital environments of the postmodern era, with special attention to videogames. Thus, the overcoming of a classic model of tragedy in the cybertextual condition is first determined, along with the discursive dimension underlying said overcoming. To this end a theoretical statement to the issue of tragedy is proposed, from the perspective of the cybertext as procedural rhetoric. This will establish the formulation of a semiotic analytical model that problematizes Greimas’ actantial system under the light of the digital and interactive reality of videogames. To avoid this constraint, we propose to attach a new variable to the base of the generative trajectory: the “configurative synthesis,” product of the so-called “gaming/playing function.” This addition will integrate the figures of the game and the player in the dynamic distinction of the “quasi-Actant.” Finally, a sample of 79 cases will be observed in regards to the implications of the cybertextual notion of tragedy to the narrative and discourse of videogames.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, semiotics has put “life” at the center of the subject of study. There is the desire to be successful in the lifestyle and the desire to convey the right knowledge to the recipient or the correct use of practices in life. A semiotic theory developed by Jacques Fontanille recently showed that strategy can also be used in semiotic analysis. So, the way of life that Fontanille talks about is not just strategy. The process we call “lifestyle” has an order from small to large: There are basic signs, texts, objects, actants, practices, action phases, strategies, and finally lifestyle. In this study, we question the function of strategy, but generally of productive pursuit, in the analysis of political discourses. In our study, we reveal the approach of semiotics to political discourses that concern the whole world and discuss whether they are valid in every society. We emphasize political semiotics, which is used to understand the general structure of political discourses, and show the general functioning of political discourses with Greimas’ Actantial Model. We conclude that politicians can influence target audiences by using various methods and discourse strategies.

Abstract:
Intimate relationships are often depicted in terms of a beautiful idealism, especially in the mass media. However, the evidence shows a vast number of women while in such a relationship have been subjected to physical, emotional, and/or sexual violence by their partner. Media plays an important part in shaping and reflecting social life, resulting in audience consumption of romanticized abusive behaviour. Its audiovisual content can perpetuate the point of view that some violence is normal – even romantic. Such a point of view can be found in Korean dramas, which have been popular with its Indonesian audience for some 20 years and do not show any signs of a decline in popularity. This study aims to reveal a narration of intimate partner violence portrayal as romance in the Korean drama The Heirs (2013). A qualitative method is used drawing on Propp's Seven Characters and Greimas' Actantial narrative analysis model. The research results show how The Heirs project romantic imagery masking abusive traits by establishing the male main character as a subject who forces a relationship without accepting rejection. Moreover, this study found the romanticization of abuse was amplified by depicting the female protagonist as an object expressing her objection to giving male characters the thrill of the chase. The findings in this research is consistent with the concept of romanticized media, particularly in portraying the romanticization of intimate partner violence.

Abstract:
The Swiss linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, is one of the forefathers of structuralism whose works have inspired and influenced many of current modern thinkers. Binary opposition is one of many of his thoughts. This notion came up from his theory explaining that in fact in humans attempt at deriving conceptual meanings, their minds work by distinguishing the differences between things. Thus, Saussure basically suggests the idea that humans first logical operation is by discerning things through their relationships; one of Saussures basic relationships is binary opposition. For this reason, this study is conducted to prove this basic yet comprehensive theory as the narrative structure of Williams Summer and Smoke. Tennessee Williams Summer and Smoke (1948) is chosen since it is richly endowed with binary symbols and characters. Moreover, the course of the narrative is also structured in dichotomies. The results of this study are: first, the binary symbols and characteristics found in the play reveal the dichotomies concerning the importance of soul/body, spirituality/sexuality, life/death, physical lust/divine love; second, the binary symbols and characters prove that the narrative structure of Summer and Smoke is constructed upon the binary oppositions as proven by the binary quests of soul and body and the binary role transformations between Alma and John as revealed by A.J. Greimas three pairs of actantial model.

Abstract:
Ibn Ḥaǧar al‑ʿAsqalānī’s accounts of the al‑Harawī affair have been extensively studied by Joel Blecher. Yet, this article proposes a new focus on that passage of the Inbāʾ al‑Ġumr, from a narratological perspective. It aims to analyse the narratological processes through which Ibn Ḥaǧar constructed a narrative of this fact, turning it into a narratological event. Compared to other chronicles, the textual space given to this academic discussion and the way the protagonists—among whom Ibn Ḥaǧar himself—are staged show how the narration is a particular occasion for historicizing the Self. The action is organised by the author according to a dialectical composition that leads to the denunciation of the fraud and the revelation of the author as the true master in ḥadīṯ, and finally announces the deferred achievement of the narrative sequence. The constructed emplotment of the event appears even more clearly through the roles that are given to each character that can be analysed thanks to Greimas’ works on the actantial model in tales. The narratological value of these roles is emphasized through the obvious shift which Ibn Ḥaǧār creates between the socio‑political life of the sultanate and the narration of this event. The emplotment of the disruption provoked by al‑Harawī’s arrival in Cairo is an occasion for Ibn Ḥaǧar to present himself as the subject of history, participating in the creation of his own fame as the restorer of religion and justice.

Abstract:

Power is a defining feature of organizational life in general and in organisational socialisation in particular. In this study we aim at developing a deeper understanding of the tension between newcomers’ search for expressing their authentic selves and the pressure to comply with what we call the myth of the ideal employee. We conceptualise the myth of the ideal employee as a dominant narrative that structures the process of membership negotiation as discussed by McPhee and Zaug (2000). Drawing on Alvesson and Wilmott (2002) and Ashforth and Schinoff (2016), we conceptualise the process as identity regulation pertaining to how newly hired graduates come to define “who they are” in a large corporation. We present findings from a longitudinal, qualitative study with data consisting of sixty-two interviews with a cohort of graduates in a corporate graduate programme. Over a period of six months, three interviews were conducted with each graduate; one before entering the organization, one after three months, and one after six months. As we conceptualise identity as embedded in narrative, the data has been analyzed through a narrative analysis, using Greimas’ actantial model. Our analysis dives into each interview round as well as narrative trajectories across interview rounds with a central emphasis on identity regulation and becoming a member.
The findings demonstrate how the myth constrains graduates to match a specific narrative identity and ideology in accordance with the organization’s own and how the newcomers strategize to establish a particular presence in the organization. It also reveals small but consequential attempts to “stay true to oneself”, thus unravelling the complex, ongoing negotiation of “who one is” and the key stakeholders involved.

Abstract:
In the era of digital convergence, transmedia storytelling, which expands narratives by intertwining and combining multiple media, is creating a new paradigm for narrative creation. Puss in Boots, who appeared as a supporting role in <Shrek2>, is a character derived from Charles Perrault's The Master Cat or Puss in Boots, and has gained significant popularity among the public. Due to its popularity, Puss in Boots became the main character in <Puss in Boots1>, a spin-off of <Shrek2>. Subsequently, as <Puss in Boots1> achieved success, various transmedia content featuring Puss in Boots as the main character was produced across different media platforms, including mobile games, theatrical animations, OTT animations and interactive animation.
This article aims to provide a detailed examination of the requirements and characteristics of transmedia storytelling. It also analyzes various instances of transmedia content utilizing the character of Puss in Boots. To scrutinize the transformation of characters' roles and the expansion of narrative structures, which are essential aspects of transmedia storytelling, we apply the 'actantial model' developed by A.J. Greimas to each content. Through this analysis, we can explore how the character of Puss in Boots serves as a pivotal link between transmedia contents and functions as a narrative mechanism. It becomes evident that discovering archetypal and fantasy characters, adapting their roles and personalities, and strategically reintroducing secondary characters while setting up foreshadowing are crucial elements in successful transmedia storytelling. Furthermore, it is essential to create an “integral” story universe that considers various types of connections between content, such as sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and reboots. This should be done while leveraging diversified media platforms that engage users in immersion and participation.

Abstract:
As polities of all kinds are under pressure to achieve socio-environmental sustainability and resilience, existing assessment tools diagnosing communities’ vitality assets and vulnerabilities face challenges. These include grappling with incomplete data, incongruent models, and diverse indicator schemes from various scientific and professional domains. Moreover, these assessments draw upon multiple, sometimes unclear, and occasionally overlapping conceptualisations of ‘sustainability’ and ‘resilience’. This complexity makes monitoring system dynamics difficult, particularly in smaller rural communities with limited resources. This essay addresses this science policy and epistemic dilemma by proposing Greimas’s actantial model as a solution. The model, initially designed for understanding language and stories, is adapted to connect and integrate diverse data and indicator narratives across disciplines to inform policies at various levels of governance. This essay discusses recent debates on the conceptualisation of sustainability/resilience and its associated challenges, exploring how Greimas’s model may allow more constructive dialogue about conflicting views on resilience and sustainability. The model is presented as a planning template to foster communication across disciplines, social actors, and polities. The conclusion emphasises the model’s simplicity as a tool to overcome jargon, bridge communication gaps, and provide guidance for smaller rural communities facing resource constraints in assessing and implementing initiatives for sustainability and resilience.
