In 2017, the world celebrated 100 years since the birth of Algirdas Julien Greimas (1917–1992). The anniversary inspired many commemorative works, events, conferences, research projects, etc. That is also the case with this paper. Here, instruments of semiotic analysis are applied to a rather unusual object – a bridge located in the town of Prienai, Lithuania. In 2010, the bridge was given the name of Greimai by the Government of Lithuania as a way of paying tribute to Julius Greimas (1882–1942), schoolteacher and burgomaster of Prienai (1934–40), and his son Algirdas Julien Greimas, literary s

The paper examines Algirdas Julien Greimas’s criticism on literature and arts and demonstrates that it is guided by three relatively independent theoretical perspectives. Greimas’s vision of the development of the Lithuanian novel implies a sociocultural literary theory, which expands on the premise that in its narrative forms, literature registers society’s sociocultural structure and simultaneously offers to its readers ways of self-perception. Hence the novel, according to Greimas, must capture the tensions of an individual’s self-positioning in his sociocultural milieu. The history of the

MacIntyre’s dismissive attitude toward traditionally feminine household duties contrasts with Greimas’s careful analysis and his unexpected invocation of a law that had a major impact on French women’s lives. Abstract:
The emergence of New Realism in philosophy and the Ontological Turn in anthropology testify to the increasing attention paid in the human sciences to the topic of ‘reality’. The aim of this essay is to reread and translate Greimas’ proposal of a semiotic of the natural world, so as to suggest how his concepts might contribute to the contemporary intellectual debate. From a discussion of Greimas’ attempt to solve the problem of the relation between ‘language’ and ‘world’ in nonreferentialist terms, the essay will then move to identify the four forms of correlation that constitute natures and wo

This interview is the result of a research with twelve “disciples” of Greimas about the possible “black boxes” in his semiotics and seeks to answer the following questions: Did “the black boxes” exist? If they did, what were they? What do Greimas followers have to say? Initiated in 2014, the research project ““Black boxes” and the importance of French semiotics in the analysis of verbal, non-verbal and syncretic discourse lasted seven years and approached the survey through readings of articles and books, the contributions of semioticians such as José Luiz Fiorin, Luís Hébert, Silvio de Santan
