Abstract:

In 2009 the oldest documents concerning the place Greiz in Eastern Thuringia were published by a historian. This article now provides a linguistic approach to that publication and its interpretation of the mentioned area in Medieval times. The results may be considered as a contribution to a book of reference for place names of Eastern Thuringia. In this respect some questions have been asked, e. g. whether the region along the river Weiße Elster between the places Weida and Plauen had really been an unsettled area until the 12th century. There is hard evidence that the historian’s assumptions are wrong because of the obvious Slavonic names of settlements in this area dating from the 8th until the 10th centuries. Based on a document from 1209 – respectively its copy from 1510 – as well as on a document from 1225 several facts are discussed in detail with consequences for toponymy and history of settlement with the help of historical linguistics. Thus it becomes evident that it is necessary to exchange ideas and to communicate for representatives of history as well as linguistics. At the same time it is obvious that the publication of documents and their analysis by historians will always be very helpful for linguistic exploitation. As a result the prospective edition of a historical dictionary of place names in Thuringia or of Eastern Thuringia respectively has been asserted as dependent on the continuous co-operation between historians and linguists.

Abstract:

Central to this thesis are the various ways in which postmodern discourse has influenced Christian theological methodology. In particular, it is concerned with the response of evangelical theology, which is particularly interesting because, it is argued, it has become shackled to Enlightenment thought. The result of this reliance on modernism has led to some uncritical assumptions regarding theological methodology. As a consequence evangelical theological methodology has been neglected until relatively recently. There is now a growing desire among evangelical theologians to rethink theological methodology. The principal theological focus of this work is Stanley J. Grenz, an American Baptist theologian who, more than many of his peers, has taken postmodern thought seriously and, accordingly, developed and adapted his theological methodology. How successful his attempt has been in staying within what many understand to be the boundaries of evangelical theology will be discussed in the thesis. It is certainly the case that many scholars consider his work to accommodate postmodernism too easily and uncritically. In Part One, three principal themes within postmodern thought that have had a direct impact on evangelical theology will be examined: the demise of the metanarrative; deconstruction; and the de-centred self. In Part Two, the work ofLudwig Wittgenstein and George Lindbeck will be discussed, not only because both have had an influence on contemporary theology, but, more significantly for this thesis, they have been important for Grenz. Part Three is a detailed examination of the work ofGrenz which focusses specifically on the development of his thought in Beyond Foundationalism. An assessment ofwhether Grenz can be faithful to a broadly evangelical theological methodology will be made. It is argued that, whilst creative and constructive, in the final analysis, his project fails. Finally, Part Four offers some suggestions as to how Grenz's thought might be employed. In this concluding part, the ideas of Grenz are developed in dialogue with John Searle, J. L. Austin, Alister MacIntyre, Alvin Plantinga, and critical realism.

Abstract:

En les societats industrialitzades, com la nostra, la millora del transport, les noves tecnologies i l’abundància d’aliments estan incrementant els índexs d’obesitat de forma epidèmica. La seva prevenció esdevé prioritària especialment en nens. La determinació de l’obesitat infantil a les consultes de pediatria habitualment s’ha realitzat a través del Body Mass Index (BMI), que s’ha intentat corregir en funció de l’edat, tipus i origen de la població. Aquest índex no té en compte variables importants com la densitat i la composició corporal, el grau d’hidratació, la sobrecàrrega d’hidrats de carboni o el tipus d’esport practicat. Entre els principals objectius terapèutics es busca reduir el BMI incrementant l’exercici físic, però en un estudi comparatiu, no s’han trobat diferències significatives del BMI entre nens no esportistes respecte de nens esportistes. S’ha trobat bona correlació global entre el BMI corregit i el percentatge de greix Faulkner i el plec abdominal. Les bones correlacions anteriors també es troben en les diferents categories INSO i es mantenen de forma independent a l’edat, el sexe, el pes, l’alçada o la dècada. Amb l’anterior, a partir del plec abdominal, es proposa el %Greix NAT i NAT (INSO) com a un nou mètode d’estimació i classificació, respectivament, del percentatge de greix en nens, tant en esportistes com en tota la població infantil en general. L’aplicació en esportistes dels nous estimadors del greix NAT respecte al BMI permet comparar les diferents classificacions en funció de l’edat, el sexe o la dècada estudiada. Podem comprovar com els estimadors NAT són més precisos i com en la última dècada s’ha incrementat el percentatge de greix especialment en les noies adolescents.
En las sociedades industrializadas, como la nuestra, la mejora del transporte, las nuevas tecnologías y la abundancia de alimentos están incrementando los índices de obesidad en forma epidémica. Su prevención resulta prioritaria especialmente en los niños. La determinación de obesidad infantil en las consulta de pediatría habitualmente se han realizado a través del Body Mass ndex (IMB), que se ha intentado corregir en función de la edad, tipos y origen de la población. Este tipo de índice no tiene en cuenta variables importantes como la densidad y la composición corporal, el grado de hidratación, la sobrecarga de hidratos de carbono o el tipo de deporte practicado. Entre los principales objetivos terapéuticos se busca reducir el BMI incrementando el ejercicio físico, pero en un estudio comparativo no se han encontrado diferencias significativas del BMI entre niños no deportistas respecto a niños deportistas. Se ha encontrado una buena correlación global entre el BMI corregido y el porcentaje de grasa Faulkner y el pliegue abdominal. Las buenas correlaciones anteriores también se encuentran en las diferentes categorías INSO y se mantienen de forma independiente a la edad, el sexo, el peso, la altura o la década. Constatado esto, a partir del pliegue abdominal, se propone el %Greix NAT y NAT (INSO) como nuevo método de estimación y clasificación respectivamente del porcentaje de grasa en niños, tanto en deportistas como en toda la población infantil en general. La aplicación en deportistas de los nuevos estimadores de la grasa NAT respecto al BMI permite comparar las diferentes clasificaciones en función de la edad, el sexo o la década estudiada. Podemos comprobar cómo los estimadores NAT son más precisos y cómo en la última década se ha incrementado el porcentaje de grasa especialmente en las jóvenes adolescentes.
n the industrialized societies, like ours, the improvement of the transports, the new technologies and the amount of food are making the index of obesity increase epidemically. Its prevention becomes a priority especially in children. The determination of child obesity on the paediatric queries usually is made by the Body Mass Index (BMI), which depends on the age, type and population origin. This index does not take into account important variables like density and body build, the hydration degree, the carbohydrates overload or the sort of sports done. One of the main therapeutic proposes is to reduce the BMI increasing physical exercise, but there were no significant differences of BMI between children who practice sport and the ones who do not. There is a good global correlation between the mended BMI and the Faulkner fat percentage and the abdominal skinfold. The previous good correlations are in the different INSO categories and are independent from the age, gender, weight, height or decade. Having said that, from the abdominal fold, it is suggested a new method of estimation and classification of the %Fat NAT and NAT (INSO) of children who practice sport as well as the children population in general. The usage on athletes of the new NAT fat estimators with regard to the BMI allows a comparison between the different classifications depending on the age, the gender or the studied decade. We can prove the NAT estimators are more precise and that in the last decade the fat percentage of teenage girls has increased.

Abstract:

Focusing on a source text of music journalism, this study sets out to investigate the role of metaphors in translation techniques from English to Swedish. The study turns to the conceptual metaphor, as presented by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (1980), and considers a range of translation strategies prescribed by scholars such as Christina Schäffner (2004, 2012) and Grace Crerar-Bromelow (2007). Drawing upon these sources, the aim is to quantify, categorize, and translate the metaphors of the source text, premised on Lakoff and Johnson’s three conceptual categories of structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors. Focusing on their frequency, overlaps, and role in the source and target texts, the study traces what bearing these conceptual categories have on the translation practice. The results show that Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphors have great merit in the translation of metaphors by helping the translator capture nuances, double meanings, and idiomatic properties in both source and target texts and contexts.

La presente memoria representa un intento de dar una mirada a la vida, y en particular a la obra política y legislativa de dos juristas del siglo pasado, ambos hermanos, me refiero a don Manuel Antonio y Enrique Tocornal Grez. A ellos les correspondió la tarea de ser protagonistas de su tiempo, en un Chile, que ha mediados del siglo pasado, se encuentra marcado principalmente por hechos o circunstancias que tuvieron relevancia nacional, y que se suscitaron en torno a determinadas instituciones, que quedaron, podríamos decirlo, como herencia de la administración española, y que Chile como estado independiente quiso ejercer, son el Patronato y el Mayorazgo.

Abstract:

Estudis amb animals d'experimentació han suggerit que l'efecte promotor de la carcinogènesi pel greix dietètic no depen tan sols de la quantitat, sinó del contingut específic d'àcids grassos (AG). En aquest sentit, l'efecte dels AG de la sèrie n9, presents principalment en l'oli d'oliva, han sigut escassament estudiats.
Objectius: i) Avaluar l'efecte d'una dieta amb un 5% d'oli d'oliva (n9), en comparació a dues dietes isolipídiques a base d'oli de peix (n3) i oli de càrtam (n6), a les fases de iniciació i promoció tumoral en un model de carcinogènesi induïda per azoximetà. ii) Estudiar el canvis en la composició del contingut d'AG de la mucosa colònica. iii) Quantificar la producció d'eicosanoides a la fase inicial de la carcinogènesi colònica.
Mètodes: 108 rates Sprague-Dawley foren dividides en tres grups segons la font de greix emprada: n9, n3 i n6. El contingut de total greix fou normolipídic per a rates (5%). La meitat d'animals de cada grup foren induïts amb AOM (7.4 mg/kg/setmana, s.c.) durant 11 setmanes, a la resta d'animals se'ls injectà un volum equivalent de salí. A la setmana 12, desprès de la primera dosi d'AOM o salí, es practicà un diàlisi intracolònica per valorar la producció local d'eicosanoides (PGE2, PGE3, LTB4 i LTB5; HPLC i EIA); desprès de la colectomia, s'avaluà l'aparició de lesions preneoplàsiques (criptes aberrants i focus de criptes aberrants). A la setmana 19, desprès del sacrifici, s'estudià el nombre, incidència (% de rates amb tumors), multiplicitat (número de tumors/rata), localització i grau de diferenciació histològica dels tumors. A més, tant a la setmana 12 com a la 19, es determinà el patró d'AG a la mucosa colònica (C16:0 a C24:0; CGL), així com la relació àcid araquidònic (AA): àcid eicosapentaenoic (EPA).
Resultats: Les rates tractades amb AOM del grup dietètic n6 mostraren un major nombre tant de criptes aberrants (p=0.004) com de focus de criptes aberrants (p=0.006) respecte als animals alimentats amb les dietes n3 i n9. La incidència tumoral fou 58%, 45.5% i 83% (p=0.15) i la multiplicitat 0.8±0.2, 0.7±0.3 i 2.5±0.8 (p=0.03) per les dietes n9, n3 i n6, respectivament. No apareguè cap adenocarcinoma pobrament diferenciat en el grup n9, mentre que en el grup n3 i n6 les taxes foren un 25% i 60% (p=0.01, n9 vs n6), respectivament. Els tumors foren de localització, preferentment, distal en els grups n3 i n6 (p=0.006, n9 vs n6). D'altra banda, la relació AA:EPA no fou diferent entre les rates tractades amb AOM o salí, així, a la setmana 12, i de forma similar a la setmana 19, aquest quocient fou 69.4±7.4, 0.97±0.0 i 135±3.3 (p=0.001) per les rates amb AOM dels grups n9, n3 i n6, respectivament. El tractament amb carcinogen produí, en el grup n6, un significatiu augment en la producció de PGE2 (p=0.004) i LTB4 (p=0.004) respecte a les tractades amb salí; aquest efecte no s'observà, o fou de menor magnitud, en les rates dels grups n3 i n9. A més, en les rates amb AOM del grup n6 s'observà un augment de PGE2 (p=0.002), LTB4 (p=0.01) i LTB5 (p=0.01) respecte a n3 i n9. En el grup n3, les rates tractades amb AOm mostraren una reducció dels nivells de PGE2 (p=0.025) i PGE3 (p=0.008) respecte a lesd tractades amb salí.
Conclusions: L'oli d'oliva exerceix un efecte inhibidor del desenvolupament de lesions preneoplàsiques i tumors similar a l'observat per l'oli de peix, però amb un efecte addicional sobre el grau de diferenciació. Aquests efectes poden ésser deguts, en part, a la modulació del metabolisme de l'AA i la síntesi de PGE2.
Animal model studies have shown that the colon tumor promoting effect of dietary fat depend not only on the amount but on its fatty acid composition. With respect to this, the effect of n9 fatty acids, present in olive oil, on colon carcinogenesis has been scarcely investigated.
Aims: i) To assess the effect of a 5% fat olive oil based diet (n9), in comparison with isolipidic fish (n3) and safflower oil (n6) baset diets, on the early and late phases of azoxymethane (AOM) induced colon carcinogenesis. ii) To examine the changes in mucosal fatty acid composition. iii) To determine the eicosanoid production on the precancer phase.
Methods: 108 rats were divided into three groups to receive isocaloric diets (5% of the energy as fat) rich in n9, n3 and n6 fat, and were administered AOM subcutaneously once a week for 11 weeks at a dose rate of 7.4 mg/kg body weight. Vehicle treated groups received an equal volume of normal saline. Groups of animals were colectomised at weeks 12 and 19 after the first dose of AOM or saline. Mucosal fatty acids and the ratio araquidonic acid (AA): eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were assessed at 12 and 19 weeks (from C16:0 to C24:0; CGL). Aberrant crypt foci and local eicosanoid production were assessed at week 12 (PGE2, PGE3, LTB4 and LTB5; HPLC and EIA). Tumor formation, incidence (number of rats with colonic tumors), multiplicity (number of colonic tumors per rat), localisation and histological degree of differentation were studied at week 19.
Results: Rats on the n6 diet showed more colonic aberrant crypts (p=0.004) and aberrant crypts foci (p=0.006) than those consuming either the n9 or n3 diet. The tumoral incidence was 58%, 45.5% and 83% (p=0.15) and the tumoral multiplicity was 0.8±0.2, 0.7±0.3 and 2.5±0.8 in n9, n3 and n6 diets, respectively. Animals fed with n3 and n6 diets had a predominance of colon tumors in the distal half of the colon as compared with those on the n9 diet (p= 0.006 n9 vs n6). Moreover, rats on the n9 diet showed a lower percentage of poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas than those fed n3 and n6 diets (0%, 25% and 60%; p=0.01 n9 vs n6). On the other hand, both at week 12 and 19, there were no differences in mucosal AA:EPA ratio between AOM and saline treated rats, but there were significant differences in AA:EPA ratio among diets (p<0.0005; n6 vs n3 and n9; n9 vs n3). Carcinogen treatment induced an appreciable increase in PGE2 (p=0.004) and LTB4 (p=0.004) formation in rats fed the n6 diet, but not in those fed the n3 and n9 diets. Additionally, AOM treated rats fed n6 fat released significantly higher amounts of PGE2 (p=0.002), LTB4 (p=0.01) and LTB5 (p=0.01) into the colonic lumen than both the other AOM treated groups and vehicle treated rats. In contrast, rats on the n3 diet treated with carcinogen showed a slight but significant decrease in the release of PGE2 (p=0.025) and PGE3 (p=0.008) as compared with saline treated rats.
Conclusions: Dietary olive oil prevented the development of aberrant crypt foci and colon carcinomas in rats, suggesting that olive oil may have chemopreventive activity against colon carcinogenesis. These effects may be partly due to modulation of AA metabolism and local PGE2 synthesis.

Abstract:

Current technology has made possible the fabrication of multilayered optical elements for soft x-ray radiation. These structures find a variety of important applications. Difficulties in the design and fabrication of multilayers for soft x-rays are related to the lack of information about the properties of materials in the very thin layers (~5-100 Å) required. Imperfections cause the measured optical properties of the multilayers to deviate strongly from ideal behavior. Realistic calculations of reflectance must take these imperfections into account. We review the pertinent theory, with attention to the problem of including non-ideal properties. We also review characterization techniques suitable for the measurement of relevant structural and stoichiometric parameters of the multilayer. A detailed characterization procedure is presented. This procedure is capable of accurately determining the layer thicknesses, material densities, interfacial rms roughness or diffusion values, crystalline structure, concentration of contaminants, and extent of surface oxidation. The techniques used included low-angle x-ray θ-2θ diffraction with parallel-beam and Bragg-Brentano geometries, wide-film Debye-Scherrer ("Read") camera and Seemann-Bohlin diffractometer, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Si/W multilayer mirrors were designed for normal-incidence 210 Å radiation. Samples were fabricated using a magnetically-confined-plasma dc-triode sputtering technique. Our characterization procedure was applied to these samples. To our knowledge, this is the first time such a comprehensive set of characterization techniques has been applied to a multilayer x-ray optical element. The same samples were tested with synchrotron radiation over a wide spectral range, and for several incidence angles. The measured reflectance is in excellent agreement with curves calculated using the information obtained from the characterization results, with no adjustable parameters. The Si/W combination is shown to have good layering characteristics. The near-normal reflectance of the multilayers was 20 to 30 times better than the reflectivity of the best single-surface mirrors at the same wavelengths.

Abstract:

This thesis provides an examination into the primary features in the theology of one of the turn of the century's leading evangelical theologians, Stanley J. Grenz. It begins by establishing the controversial nature of Grenz's project within evangelical theology, and how his aims were misread by a number of evangelical scholars. It then argues that the primary feature in his writings was the doctrine of the Trinity, giving shape to his methodology, theology, and ethical engagement. Accordingly, this thesis identifies the most significant features he adopted and adapted from Wolfhart Pannenberg, whose influence on Grenz is readily seen. These features include not only how Grenz derived particular methodological aspects from Pannenberg (chap. 2), but also those related to the shape of his trinitarian theology itself (chap. 3). Next, while realizing that Grenz's new-found emphasis on a trinitarian project was not placed on a tabula rasa, a wider account of his trinitarian background is considered (chap. 4), as is the particular developmental shape of his doctrine of the Trinity itself (chap. 5). Following this, an examination is made into how Grenz accessed this doctrine of the Trinity, through the imago Dei concept, informed by a theological hermeneutic, theological exegesis, and weaved through the traditional systematic loci (chap. 6). Finally, the shape of his trinitarian ethical work is considered in light of the overall coherence of his body of writings, both in its early form as a Christian ethic as well as in the test-cases that were part of his engagement (chap. 7). This is followed by a summary of the reception of Grenz's project, which is deemed consistent with his aims of being both a distinctly evangelical and trinitarian theologian.
