The development and adaptation of gear technologies to local fisheries has been a management-oriented research strategy commonly used to mitigate the ecological effects of pelagic longline (PLL) gear on bycatch species. Grenada’s PLL fishery primarily targets yellowfin tuna, however while minimal, their bycatch of blue marlin and white marlin exceeds the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) allowed by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). This thesis examines how rival national interests and relations between European states, principally France and Britain, affected ethnic relationships on the island of Grenada, West Indies throughout the period of 1763-1800. The arguments postulated are: 1. Imperial ideologies reinforced assumed superiority and right to rule that relegated all other groups to inferior status. 2. An ethnic model rather than a racial model is the best way to study Grenada plantation society. 3. It is shown that the theoretical approaches which dominated the tourism literature in the late 1970s and 1980s are unable to cope with the rapid changes occurring in the industry. Abstract:
The deep-sea has long been perceived as a food limited environment. The recent discovery of seasonal inputs of organic matter into the deep, in areas of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans, has led to questions about the behaviour of deep-sea demersal animals. This thesis describes an autonomous acoustic tracking system (AUDOS: Aberdeen University Deep Ocean Submersible) developed to address the behaviour question; primarily of the demersal grenadier fish, Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus, but also other shallower living species. Moreover, businesses wishing to operate in perpetuity are challenged by the socio-ecological system that constitutes sustain
