Full textThe aim of this study was to highlight relevant stone parameters on which the durability of Triassic siliceous sandstones could be predicted in order to contribute to the selection of the potential restoration stones in the built heritage and especially on the cathedral of Strasbourg. An experimental comparative study was made on 5 quarry sandstones to discriminate and 2 exposed sandstones from the monument. The two exposed pieces showed opposite weathering behaviors and states of cohesion that could allow a better definition of the parameters involved in the salt weathering of sandstones. The pore structures and the clay coating properties of sandstones underlined the major role of the clay minerals (quantity, nature and specific surface area) in the dilation behavior under humidity variations as well as in hydrodynamical and mechanical behaviors of sandstones. Three types of salt weathering test were carried out on sandstones. The clay-salt interaction was emphasized by the modifications of the dilation behaviors after salt contamination upon salt nature, NaCl or Na2SO4. A classification of stone susceptibility to salt damages had been proposed as well as an index of salt susceptibility of sandstone had been formulated. The mineralogical and mechanical contributions could justify stone susceptibility to salt damage

Full textIn the framework of research of ANDRA about reversible deep geological radioactive waste, a microbiological study was conducted on pore water and Callovo-Oxfordian clay layer (-490m and 165 million years). Two types of studies were conducted, a cultural approach and a molecular approach.Despite various attempts of extraction, and as for the previous, no DNA could be extracted in this work. However, the cultural approach has highlighted the presence of a sparse microflora but viable and metabolically quite varied: nine aerobes species including four facultative anaerobes and two strictly anaerobes. They represent different metabolic types: sulfate-reducing, iron-reducing, fermentative and complete oxidation of substrates into CO2. In view of the availability of in-situ sources of carbon and energy required for bacterial growth, the production of acetate and other volatile fatty acids as well as hydrogen production could potentially be active in the clay layer of Cox and open to varied bacterial growth. The study of metabolic products has also identified several biotic agents (including hydrogen sulfide) having a potentially biocorrosive activity. Through this work it appears that the biological component is to be taken into account in the design of radioactive waste storage, in particular to avoid or minimize any contribution of exogenous organic matter in the clay formation. This biological consideration appears crucial to attempt to restrict bacterial trophic network on these initial conditions, that is to say those that are potentially present on the storage site, that concern solely autochthonous carbon and energy sources

Full textThe studies of electrical , hydraulic properties of the Fontainebleau's sandstone (without clay) and the Sihapas's sandstone (with clay) show that permeability and formation factor are well correlated. On the presence of clay, the hydroelectric parameter's (permeability and formation factor) are always well proportioned, but the hydraulic parameters (permeability and porosity) are indented. The size of grains that control the relation of hydroelectric parameters. In the Fontainebleau sanddstone, grain size increase in reduced porosities, by cementing in silica, in turn permeability decrease and formation factor increase. The reduction of porosity conducts a porosity threshold for hydraulic and electric transports. The hydroelectric porosity threshold obtained is 0. 019. In favour of compression velocity, the compression modulus of pores and the volume fraction of effective cement can be determined. In the observed porosity range, the compression modulus of pores is constant which indicates that the nature of contacts between grains is not modified by cementation. The volume fraction of cement effective is well correlated with porosity, permeability and formation factor. We measured certain physical parameters (density, porosity, elastic wave velocities, thermal conductivity, formation factor and magnetic susceptibility), in laboratory conditions, on rock samples representative of crust lithology. By using the method of statistic (clustering analysis, gaussian classification and discriminate analysis), within a lithological context given, we can determine discriminate hierarchy of the parameters in order to distinguish well the lithotypes in a geological formation

Full textNigerian uraniferous deposits are located in carboniferous and jurassic formations of Tim Mersoï basin. AREVA is shareholder of 3 mine sites in this area: SOMAÏR and COMINAK, both in exploitation since 1960’s and IMOURAREN, 80km further South, whose exploitation is planned for 2015. Mineralization of Imouraren deposit is included in the fluvial formation of Tchirezrine 2 (Jurassic), composed of channels and flood plains. Facies of channel infillings range from coarse sandstones to siltstones, while overflow facies are composed of analcimolites.Secondary mineralogy was acquired during 2 stages: 1- diagenesis, with formation of clay minerals, analcime, secondary quartz and albites, and 2- stage of fluids circulations, which induced alteration of detrital and diagenetic minerals, formation of new phases and uranium deposition. A mineralogical zoning, at the scale of deposit resulted from this alteration. The heterogeneity of Tchirezrine 2, at the level of both facies and mineralogy, is also evidenced during ore treatment, as ore reacts differently depending on its source, with sometimes problems of U recovery. Ore treatment tests showed that analcimes and chlorites were both penalizing minerals, because of 1- the sequestration of U-bearing minerals into analcimes, 2- their dissolution which trends to move away from U solubilization conditions (pH and Eh) and to form numerous sulfates, and 3- problems of percolation. A detection method of analcime-rich ores, based on infrared spectroscopy, was developed in order to optimize ore blending and so to reduce negative effects during ore treatment process

Full textIn this work, a new bond model with nonlinear shear failure criterion is first proposed and implemented in PFC for describing mechanical behavior of isotropic cohesive granular materials such as sandstone. A large number of compression tests have been performed on 3D samples. The results show that the effect of confining pressure on compressive strength and failure pattern is well described by the proposed bond model. Effects of loading path and the intermediate principal stress on deformation and failure have been also investigated. After further extending parameters on elastic and strength, two bond models: the proposed bond model and the improved smooth joint model, are coupled to character the anisotropy of strength and deformation in anisotropic cohesive materials such as sedimentary rocks. A series of conventional triaxial compression tests with different loading paths have been performed and numerical results are in good agreement with experimental data, especially for elastic response and strength properties. The failure mode transformation between weakness layer and rock matrix under different confining pressures has been well described. Furthermore, the proposed bond model has been extended to study hydraulic fracturing process in cohesive materials. A representative hydraulic fracture propagation process has been presented. Influences of different factors, such as confining pressure, fluid viscosity and fluid injection rate, on hydraulic fracture extension have been investigated. Finally, we have developed a dimensional reconstruction method of block shape irregularity and studied its effects on block impacts using an energy based approach

Full textBecause they offer the oldest and longest-lived sedimentary basins and they are a cross-over area between Cenozoic and Cretaceous rifts, the Northern (NKR) and Central (CKR) Kenya Rifts are among the most important areas of the East African Rift for hydrocarbon prospecting. During the 70s and 80s, the interest of oil companies focussed in the Turkana depression and the northeastern region of Kenya. Seismic reflection surveys and several exploration wells allowed the identification of several deep buried basins: 1) In the NKR, 3 strings of N-S oriented half-grabens, the oldest known basins being of Cretaceous(?)-Paleogene to middle Miocene age; 2) In the CKR, two N-S half-grabens, the Baringo Basin (Paleogene-Present) and the Kerio Basin (Paleogene-upper Miocene). All basins are filled by up to 8-km thick of alluvial, fluvio-deltaic or lacustrine sediments and volcanics of late Eocene to Neogene age. New sedimentological studies have focussed on reservoir/source rock quality in several of these basins. In terms of hydrocarbon potential, arkosic sandstones in CKR/NKR such as the Lapur Sandstone Formation or the Muruanachok Sandstone Formation demonstrate a good reservoir quality with porosity up to 25 %. Strong changes in terms of diagenetic alteration relate to deformation events (burial/uplift) or change in sediment source. High quality source rocks relate to freshwater lake environments under tropical climate. Such environments have been identified during Cretaceous-Paleogene in the NKR and lower Neogene in the CKR and can be envisaged to occur in basins of same age that are highly under-explored

Full textThe scientific and cultural transfers between the muslim Orient and the Christian Western civilisation have evolved unevenly. Indeed, with the advance of Islam, the transfers between the two in the field of science, philosophy and Hellenistic art had known a rare intensity. It is on this basis that that the Arab-Muslim culture developed its own identity. Their close relation with the Western civilisation favored a most fruitful exchange which varied according to the different geographical regions (the city-state of Jerusalem, Maghreb, Andalucia, central Europe and naval exchanges). This exchange would continue to intensify across the Middle Ages only to gradually lessen. In the 12th Century a second intense period of translation allowed the Christian West to acquire the knowledge of Arab science and philosophy and through this the Hellensitic bases which founded the renaissance and on a long term basis, European rationalism. A particular attention is dedicated in this thesis to ceramic, used as a marker of the differing deep and intense trends, which were, what is less well known, more even than one once thought. The example of Majolica is exemplary, the ramifications of which extend to Latin America
