This paper explores the effectiveness of Juilland’s D as a measure of vocabulary dispersion in large corpora. Through a series of experiments using the BNC, we explored the influence of three variables: the number of corpus-parts used for the computation of D, the frequency of the target word, and the distributions of those words. Computer-assisted stylistic analyses regularly employ the calculation of keywords. We show that the inclusion of a separate dispersion measure in addition to a frequency measure into keyword analysis (or more generally: keyness analysis), as proposed by Gries (2021), is a necessary extension of said analyses. Abstract:

We use a relational characterization of binary direct sums to model sequences within the relation-algebraic manipulation and prototyping system RelView in a simple way. As an application we formally derive a RelView program for computing equivalence classes of an equivalence relation, where we combine relation-algebraic calculations with the so-called Dijkstra-Gries program development method. Also a refinement of the simple modeling is presented, which leads to the classical datatype of stacks, and a further application is sketched.

Recent corpus studies have shown that learners of English are aware of systematic associations between verbs and their preferred argument structures to an extent that is similar to that of a native speaker of English (e.g., Gries and Wulff, 2005 ). Given evidence for similarly systematic associations in native speaker data at the lexis–morphology interface (e.g., Römer, 2005a ), the question arises whether, and to what extent, learners of English are also sensitive to lexical dependencies at the level of morphology, and how their verb-aspect associations compare with those of native speakers.
