Abstract:
To date, little attention has been paid to the fact that a whole section in Wilhelm Griesinger’s textbook is devoted to suicidality. Griesinger perceived suicide as a distinct entity. In his opinion, only one-third of all suicides were committed by people suffering from mental disorders; heredity and brain anomalies could also be involved. Therapeutically, Griesinger recommended removing all potential means for suicide and admitting people at risk to a psychiatric hospital. Since his textbook was a standard work, his views reveal what young doctors could have learned about suicidality in German psychiatry of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Both Griesinger and Dies identify Johann Mattheson’s treatise, Der vollkommene Capellmeister (1739), as an important influence on Haydn’s musical development in his youth. Perhaps because Griesinger then gives more emphasis to Fux than Mattheson, and Dies reports some disparaging remarks on the treatise by the aged Haydn, the range and nature of Mattheson’s likely influence on the young musician have not been fully explored. Several authors have alluded to the relevance of Mattheson’s comments on aesthetic matters but, in a more behavioural mode, the treatise lays emphasis too on the duties and expectations of a being a successful Kapellmeister, qualities that were to be exemplified in Haydn’s long career. The essay documents this wider, formative role, including Mattheson’s enthusiasm for all things English. Consideration of Mattheson’s influence leads to a more nuanced understanding of Haydn’s personal and musical education, or Bildung to a use a later concept.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the ways in which psychiatrists and researchers have developed new tools to deal with the unknown in psychiatric classifications. In the following four chaptersI seek to understand why the modes of thinking that dominated late nineteenth century psychiatry have proved to be durable and stable, and why the history of what is now called schizophrenia is the history of psychiatry itself. In this context, I situate my argument within the debates regarding the historiography of psychiatry, and more specifically the historiography of schizophrenia. My approach can be understood as an attempt to move away from common approaches to the history of psychiatric classifications. In my view, the influence of German psychiatry, from Griesinger’s unitary psychosis to Bleuler’s schizophrenia tells us more about psychiatry and its modes of conceptualization, than thus far recognized.Against the narratives that presuppose a direct line of development, I argue that the path starting with primäre Verrücktheit—one of the most commonly diagnosed psychic diseases in 1870s – leading to ”paranoia”—a term used as synonym for insanity by most authors in the1880s and 1890s – and ending in “dementia praecox” and schizophrenia was not a linear one.By tracing the detours followed by psychiatric research in the last three decades of the nineteenth century, I show how, paradoxically, the progress in the special nosology delayedconsiderably the future development in psychiatric theories

Abstract:
This chapter outlines Wilhelm Griesinger's model of the etiology, symptomology, and treatment of mental diseases as a politically activist and scientifically empiricist reading of German Idealist traditions, combining the therapeutics of modern medical practice (including pathology, neurology, anatomy, and medical chemistry) with the kind of Left Hegelian demands on praxis that will emerge in Marx's work. Griesinger (1817-1868) is remembered today as an innovator in medicine and psychiatry who pointed the way for modern-day psychiatric clinical practice, to advances in neuropathology, and to modern strategies for the diagnostics and treatment of mental diseases. Yet his ground-breaking textbookMental Pathology and Therapeuticswas heavily influenced by idealist philosophy in the traditions of Johann Friedrich Herbart and Georg W. F. Hegel. Griesinger situates his own work at the juncture between and clinical or medical psychology and university psychology, what his translators refer to as "medico-metaphysics," a scientific metaphysics of the mind. His project documents a reception of German Idealism stressing nurture, social transformation, and somatic knowledge rather than cognitivism, and provides evidence for a scientific paradigm accommodating induction from material evidence as well as deduction from premises.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter centres on the development of a neurophysiological model of melancholia, which emerged within the new academic psychiatry in the German states at mid-century, and was taken up into British literature in the 1860s and 70s. It considers Wilhem Griesinger’s model of psychological reflex action, which he used to explain the aetiology of mental disorders. Building on Griesinger’s model, Richard von Krafft-Ebing in Germany and Henry Maudsley in Britain offered two of the period’s most comprehensive descriptions of melancholia as a modern biomedical mood disorder. Finally the new neurophysiological model of melancholia is considered in relation to neurasthenia, a fashionable diagnosis in the United States in the last quarter of the century.
