Abstract:
Recent decades have seen an increase in feminist critiques of the works of Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872), and a growing awareness that these deal with contemporary issues around the social roles of women. This study builds on exsiting feminist-themed examinations of Grillparzer's works to show more fully how they fit into the context of calls for women's rights in nineteenth-century Austria. New interpretations of Grillparzer's heroines are made possible by considering the full spectrum of the author's intellectual interests and examining his dramas through the lenses suggested by his reading.

Bartlett, Keith Alan. "Space and symbolism in the Restauration Novelle : with particular reference to Jeremias Gotthelf's 'Die Schwarze Spinne', Adalbert Stifter's 'Der Hochwald' and Franz Grillparzer's 'Der Arme Spielmann'." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35089.

Abstract:
The study looks at symbolism, especially the symbolism of space and visuality, in three Restauration Novellen. Gotthelf's Die Schwarze Spinne presents a religious dilemma in spatial form. Specific motifs such as changing shape and absence of position become consistent correlates of evil. If the godless characters are foreigners who have abandoned their former homes, the Christian ones affirm and restore existing space, remaining where they were born. This contrast relates to the over-riding concept of "Neu-gier" in the Novelle. Gotthelf's ultimate rejection of anything new is given spatial for

Abstract:
This dissertation draws on contemporary philosophical and sociological approaches to trust and engages them in a dialog with literary, poetological, and philosophical texts from the nineteenth century. In doing so it seeks to explore both what other disciplines have to offer to literary studies with regard to the interpretation of trust as a literary motif, as well as to show how literary texts evoke compelling scenarios in which the conceptual and semantic complexities of the phenomenon of trust take on theatrical, rhetorical, and narrative forms that can both illustrate and challenge sociolo

The protagonists in Grillparzer’s "Der arme Spielmann" and "Sappho" are two kinds of artists. The protagonist in "Der arme Spielmann" is Jakob, who is an absurd, laughable and strange begging musician. Sappho, the protagonist in "Sappho", is a talented poetess, who won the laurel wreath in a poetic competition. They both experience the existential nihility and have to face the problem of the artist’s existential crisis as well as the conflict between art and life. I

Abstract:
The thesis discusses problems of the reception of the work of the prominent Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer by Czech audiences. An emphasis is placed upon the plays König Ottokars Glück und Ende, Libussa and Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg, which are inspired by stories from Czech history and mythology. Up to these days, these plays have never been staged in Czech theatres nor translated into Czech. Czech audiences did not accept them because of the way the dramatist depicted Czech history and harsh criticism of Czech people which mostly appears in the tragedy König Ottokars Glück und Ende. T
