Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis we present GrMPy, a library of classes and functions implemented in Python, designed for implementing graphical models. GrMPy supports both undirected and directed models, exact and approximate probabilistic inference, and parameter estimation from complete and incomplete data. In this thesis we outline the necessary theory required to understand the tools implemented within GrMPy as well as provide pseudo-code algorithms that illustrate how GrMPy is implemented.<b

In this thesis I describe construction of Lie group and Lie algebra and its following usage for physical problems. To be able to construct Lie groups and Lie algebras we need define basic terms such as topological manifold, tensor algebra and differential geometry. First part of my thesis is aimed on this topic. In second part I am dealing with construction of Lie groups and algebras. Furthermore, I am showing different properties of given structures. Next I am trying to show, that there exists some connection among Lie groups and Lie algebras. In last part of this thesis is used just for show

Abstract:
This thesis explores the process of building community over time, through collaboration, to rehearse and produce a portable production of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, looking at the elements of time, trust and age with an ensemble of ten men, all actors over the age of 55. The building of trust over time was vital to the production process and the actors had the time to embody their roles and the language of the play. We look at the questions “why this play,” “why all men?” and “why theatre?” and investigate the physical nature of the play and its violence a la Three Stooges or Pun

This Master's thesis relates to continuum mechanics and its connection with selected directions of modern differential geometry, which deal with geometric structures and objects. These are mainly tensors, bundles, varieties and jets. The first part is devoted to the mechanics of the continuum itself and its description in several areas, others deal with mathematical concepts and their possible application in mechanics.

Abstract:
The first part of the thesis presents elementary facts and results of the theory of groups. The second part explains Sylow's subgroups theory containing, among others, formulations and proofs of the three Sylow's theorems which are important tools in analysing the structure of mainly nonabelian groups. The goal of the following part is to describe the structure of all finite groups up to order 15. Basically, there are two possible approaches to the characterization of these groups - one can either focus just on these particular groups or describe groups with order of e.g. prime power and then

Abstract:
This thesis covers the topic of the computation of Galois groups over the rationals. Beginning with the classic algorithm by R. Stauduhar, we then review the theory necessary to explain the modular algorithm by K. Yokoyama. More precisely, we discuss the notion of the universal splitting ring of a polynomial. For a separable polynomial, we then study idempotents in the universal splitting ring. The modular algorithm involves computations in the ring of p-adic integers. Examples are given for polynomials of degree 3 and 4.

Density matrix renormalization group is a powerful numerical approach originating in solid state physics. Since its introduction to quantum chemis- try it has been successfully applied to many challenging problems and proved especially efficient for systems with strong multi-reference character. As the method is not invariant to the change of orbital ordering, we implemented the automatic orbital ordering optimization procedure built around the entan- glement analysis and employing the Fiedler method. A technique for active space selection based on one-orbital entropy is introduced. We followe

We characterize various types of σ-porosity via an infinite game in terms of winning strategies. We use a modification of the game to prove and reprove some new and older in- scribing theorems for σ-ideals of σ-porous type in locally compact metric spaces. We show that there exists a closed set which is σ-(1 − ε)-symmetrically porous for every 0 < ε < 1 but which is not σ-1-symmetrically porous. Next, we prove that the realizable by an action unitary representations of a finite abelian group Γ on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space H form a comeager set in Rep(Γ, H). 1

In the presented work we focus on applications of decision problems from combinatorial group theory. Namely we analyse the Shpilrain-Zapata pro- tocol. We give formal proof that small cancellation groups are good platform for the protocol because the word problem is solvable in linear time and they are generic. We also analyse the complexity of the brute force attack on the protocol and show that in a theoretical way the protocol is immune to attack by adversary with arbitrary computing power.

The aim of this work is to study the Hamiltonian quaternions H and quaternion alge- bras. The first two chapters are based on the article Quaternion algebras by K. In the beginning, we mainly develop the theory about quaternions, quaternion algebras and study equivalent condi- tions for being a split or non-split quaternion algebra. After that, we also characterize, up to isomorphism, quaternion algebras over several fields such as R, C or Fp. In the third chapter, the thesis deals with orders in quaternion algebras, especially

Jan Žemlička, Ph.D., Department of Algebra Abstract: This thesis is about finding idempotents in a group ring. We describe three techniques of finding idempotents in a semisimple group ring and in the last chapter there is an attempt to find idempotents in a group ring that does not have to be semisimple. The first technique uses representations and characters of a group. The second technique finds idempotents through the use of Shoda pairs. The third tech
