The goal of the article is to show the potential of the war metaphor applied in the picturebook medium and reflect upon the cultural premises of its use. The analysed material includes three Polish and two Scandinavian books, published within four years, 2011–2014: Pamiętnik Blumki1 (Blumka’s Diary, 2011) by Iwona Chmielewska, Powieki (The Eyelids, 2012) by Michał Rusinek and Ola Cieślak, Ostatnie przedstawienie panny Esterki (Miss Esterka’s Last Performance, 2014) by Adam Jaromir and Gabriela Cichowska, Lejren (The Camp, 2011) by Oscar K. and Dorte Karrebæk and Krigen (The War, 2013) by Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus.

In this article we analyze two films about picturebooks, made in student-led groups in a children’s literature course at university level. We also investigate the self-assessments the students wrote. The assignment was designed to explore specific Norwegian picturebooks, in this case Snill (What a girl!) by Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus and Garmanns Sommer (Garmann’s Secret) by Stian Hole. Our aim is to highlight in which ways this assignment expanded the students’ knowledge on picturebooks and literature didactics. For this purpose, we build upon picturebook theory, theories on multimodality and theories on collaborative learning processes.
 Our findings support results and ideas in other studies on how to use and produce multimodal artefacts and digitized media in collaborative learning contexts (Jewitt, 2006; Jewitt, 2013; Kress & Selander, 2011; Selander, 2015), and studies on the potential of collaborative teaching and learning processes, and of students’ self-assessments (Alexander,2017). Both films present and discuss the interplay between words and images in ways that demonstrate solid knowledge of picturebook theory. The analyses also indicate that this kind of film making project may foster a high degree of student engagement suited to achieve in-depth knowledge on topics within the field of children’s literature.

Abstract The article explores two aspects of translations of Nordic children’s literature, which is more and more often defined by its authors as aimed at all readerships with no respect to age (allålderslitteratur). This stance may affect the theory of translation in reference to the category of the implied reader, which will have to be reconsidered. The concept of all-age literature is presented in the article as a solution to long academic discussions about the presence of an adult implied reader of children’s literature. The other perspective shows the presence of Scandinavian picturebooks on the Polish book market which have been published within the latest decade (e.g. by Svein Nyhus, Gro Dahle, Pernilla Stalfelt, Pija Lindenbaum, and Ulf Nilsson). These books are brave, taboo-breaking and translated without purifications, which refutes Elżbieta Zarych’s (2016) observations about the rules and mechanisms which are prevalent, i.e. that translators are still expected to mitigate and omit painful moments. The final part combines two aspects - the above-mentioned translations are free of adaptations, but it is difficult to assess whether the translators have taken into account the postulates of Scandinavian authors and their ambition to create all-age literature. Answers to the questions posed at the end (e.g. if the books are created for all, should they be translated for all?) might complete the translation studies with important and future-oriented insights.

Este artículo analiza lo que es el giro decolonial en el siglo XXI. La reflexión teórica sobre el giro decolonial es reciente, está vinculada a la población latina en universidades norteamericanas. Aún no hay una definición exacta al respecto ni una comunidad homogénea que se circunscriba estrictamente a ello. Este es un concepto en desarrollo. Es trabajado por un grupo heterogéneo de docentes e intelectuales que conjugan teoría y práctica para darle sentido a una serie de preocupaciones que comparten relacionadas con la crítica de la colonialidad del poder. Dada la amplitud del tema, me limitaré a mencionar algunos temas, autores y autoras, y bibliografía para tener una idea al respecto.

Molti interrogativi sull'esistenza di strutture cerebrali implicate nella percezione e organizzazione dello schema corporeo nascono giŕ nel diciannovesimo secolo dall'osservazione clinica di pazienti affetti da "turbe" dell'immagine corporea. Dalle prime descrizioni di Gerstmann, Pick, Babisnski e altri, molti studi successivi hanno aggiunto informazioni e hanno chiarito aspetti fondamentali di sindromi quali l'autotopoagnosia, la sindrome del giro angolare, l'anosognosia o la somatoparafrenia. Questo studio mira a verificare se gli strumenti neuropsicologici utilizzati in queste sindromi possono essere efficacemente applicati ai pazienti dopo un periodo di coma.

Este artículo comprendió los sentidos que le otorgan las personas Usuarias de silla de ruedas, a sus experiencias recreativas, en Popayán Cauca. Metodológicamente se ubicó en una investigación cualitativa de corte histórico hermenéutica, con diseño teoría fundamentada, recurriendo a observaciones no participante, entrevistas abiertas y entrevistas a profundidad, que propiciaron la escritura de la teoría emergente. Los resultados destacaron que los usuarios de silla de ruedas logran darle un sentido de re-significación a sus experiencia recreativa, surgiendo a partir de la recreación como un dispositivo relacional, que permite de esta manera darle un giro a las prácticas activistas de la recreación y al concepto de discapacidad; dicha re-significación se mueve en torno a los sentido de la recreación como un símbolo, como una red de relaciones y la familia como actores fundamentales en la construcción de identidad individual y social, dentro del proceso experiencial. Primero, Las representaciones de las experiencias recreativas a través del intercambio de ivencias;segundo, La recreación como una forma de fortalecimiento y superación; tercero, La familia como eje principal de emociones primarias entre el tiempo libre y el esparcimiento. Finalmente se concluyó con la categoría central denominada: La recreación como un dispositivo de re-significación: Otra mirada desde la silla de ruedas.

La información como arte es una lectura del cambio de paradigma dentro del campo estético y de producción sugerido por el arte de concepto en la década de 1960. Muchas de las expresiones artísticas producidas por artistas conceptuales tenían en común el uso de datos e información como materia prima, a partir de entonces se abre una nueva perspectiva que dará paso al uso de las tecnologías de la información para la producción artística. Estos son los inicios de un arte pre-neomedial, en tanto que comparten unas formas de creación y crítica al propio medio de las obras. Con los esfuerzos críticos del arte conceptual, logran darle un giro al paradigma estético, llevando a que la información exista en función del arte, y no el arte en función de la información.

Leonardo Foscolo (Venecija, 1588.–1660.) bio je generalni providur za Mletačku Dalmaciju i Albaniju od 1645. do 1650. godine. Sjedište providura i državne administracije koja je upravljala pokrajinom bilo je u Providurovoj palači u Zadru. U prvom dijelu studije analiziraju se oni portreti providura Leonarda Foscola izvedeni uljem na platnu i u grafici koji su povezani s njegovom vladavinom i djelovanjem u Dalmaciji. Jedini portret izveden uljem na platnu čuva se u samostanu sv. Lovre u Šibeniku. Veća je skupina grafičkih portreta na kojima su uz Foscolov lik prikazani i pojedini gradovi, naselja i utvrde u Dalmaciji u kojima je poduzimao ratne oslobodilačke akcije. Drugi dio studije istražuje Foscolovu donatorsku i mecenatsku ulogu. U tome se izdvaja njegova uloga u oblikovanju oltara sv. Šimuna u istoimenoj crkvi u Zadru. Foscolo je ostavio trag i u Šibeniku. Prema nepotvrđenoj predaji na zvonik crkve sv. Ivana ugradio je satni mehanizam koji je kao ratni plijen prenio iz osvojenog Drniša o čemu svjedoči natpis upisan u njegovoj lođi na koju je obješen i Foscolov grb s providurskom kapom. Isti grb ugrađen je i na pročelje crkve sv. Nikole u Šibeniku. Foscolo je u Dalmaciji stekao ugled što je rezultiralo činjenicom da su mu brojne komune dale podići spomenike o čemu se raspravlja u trećem dijelu studije. Navode se djela u Šibeniku, Splitu, Hvaru, Korčuli, Pagu i Islamu Grčkom.

El texto expone la necesidad darle un giro epistemológico a la didáctica de la lógica, a partir del concepto de la razonabilidad, abordada por diversos autores, entre los que se destaca a Peirce (2010) y Barrena (2015). Sus postulados tienen en cuenta las relaciones entre el arte y la experiencia, esta última, en su dimensión estética, contempla ramas de la ciencia como la lógica, la ética, la hermenéutica, los estudios literarios, la pedagogía, la educación pragmatista y matemática. Esta dialogicidad de la experiencia estética, se convierte el punto de partida para la construcción de una estrategia didáctica con 18 maestros en formación de Matemáticas, adscritos a la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de Antioquia. Los resultados muestran, que ellos se dejan convocar y afectar por lo estético, pues reconocen la literatura como portadora de emociones y elementos lógicos; aspectos que les permite imaginar situaciones didácticas divergentes y los preparan para la lectura de textos científicos. Así, el arte y la ciencia los forma para la investigación en el aula.

En este artículo, el autor reflexiona sobre el problema de la paz, en un pais en donde el principal obstáculo cultural para apropiarnos de las posibilidades de convivencia padfica es la creencia de que las relaciones pacíficas son utopía en El Salvador. Precisamente, las relaciones conflictivas se nos presentan cada día como realidad ineludible y son las que nos han motivado a reflexionar sobre la paz como un problema. Esta reflexión, por muy teórica que pueda parecer, es urgente, ya que en la medida en que tengamos no solo claridad, sino también argumentos sólidos para fundamentar y orientar nuestras acciones, de ese mismo modo nuestra cosecha en el campo de la construcción de paz será mayor a largo plazo. El acrual contexto mundial, donde el viejo adagio latino, "si quieres paz, prepárate para la guerra", está siendo puesto en acción, en la llamada guerra contra el terrorismo, nos invita también a reflexionar sobre la paz. Ojalá que esta reflexión ayude a darle un giro a la lógica contradictoria de este adagio latino y a tomar concienciade que si queremos la paz, tenemos que prepararnos para la paz.

La tecnología hoy en día juega un rol muy importante en la manera como las empresas se manejan para conseguir ventaja competitiva en el mercado; por lo cual, la presente investigación se enfoca en el impacto que genera la tecnología Business Process Management (Gestión de procesos de negocio) en la atención a clientes de organizaciones privadas, es por ello que el objetivo de estudio es evaluar la influencia de la BPM en la mejora de los procesos que se realizan dentro del área de atención al cliente; con este fin se identificaron las actividades que se desarrollan en el departamento de atención al cliente, donde se detectaron los cuellos de botella y se analizaron las ventajas-desventajas de utilizar BPM dentro de las organizaciones. La metodología utilizada es exploratoria-descriptiva, donde se aplicó una encuesta a 458 gerentes y/o encargados empresariales, además se utilizó la herramienta SPSS-25 para el análisis de datos, por lo cual, se concluyó que de las empresas que conocen de la existencia de la BPM, son muy pocas las que lo aplican al software ya sea por desconocimiento de las ventajas que pueden lograr tanto en automatización de procesos, mejora de tiempos, eficiencia en la atención al cliente; aunque poco a poco se está cambiando la mentalidad de los encargados implementando páginas web, compras online, facturación electrónica, entre otros, aún falta darle un giro al modelo de negocio y establecer nuevas estrategias que llevarán a la empresa al éxito, por lo cual, se ha considerado que para futuras investigaciones se debe realizar un análisis específico de acuerdo con el giro del negocio y el tipo de cliente que tiene cada empresa.

Son muchos los artículos, los textos y las publi-caciones que hacen referencia a la resistencia y la resistencia civil, pero muy pocos los que hablan de la noviolencia como uno de sus pilares. Es más, es tal su desconocimiento que noviolencia la escriben indistintamente (no violencia, novio-lencia o no-violencia). Por esa razón, el objeto de este artículo es darle un giro a estas ideas, y mostrar cómo la noviolencia es el sustento de las nociones de resistencia y resistencia civil. Gracias a los estudios y las luchas gandhianos es que estos dos conceptos cobraron mayor sentido y en esa medida es que se les puede reconocer como luchas distintas de las militares o bélicas. El fundamento teórico de la noviolencia permite ver tanto la importancia que tiene el factor de lo no armado como la relevancia del estudio de los medios-métodos y fines-estrategias. To-mar como base estas dos variables amplía las perspectivas de análisis y, sobre todo, permite in-cluir valores, como el de la paz, en medio de una constante tan predominante como la violencia. Pensar desde el punto de vista de la noviolencia y sus diferentes acepciones facilita entender y conceptualizar las luchas sociales de forma más precisa y sistematizada.

“Picturebooks between Readers. Controversial Picturebooks in Norway and Denmark”When reading contemporary Scandinavian picturebooks, one may wonder who they are aimed at. The two picturebooks to be discussed in this article are the Danish book De skæve smil (The Crooked Smiles) (2008) by Oscar K. and Lilian Brøgger, and the Norwegian book Krigen (The War) (2013) by Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus. De skæve smil is a challenging picturebook about aborted foetuses, “those who never were born”. Krigen uses war metaphors to tell about a different kind of war, the war between two divorcing parents. Both books are existential picturebooks, illustrated in a naive drawing style with complex multi-layered narrative devices. They are challenging both thematically and in terms of their verbal and visual narrative devices. But unlike many other challenging Scandinavian picturebooks, they are also controversial and likely to offend their adult reader. What makes these picturebooks not only challenging but also highly controversial? This, in turn, leads to the question of audience: who are these picturebooks for?

Y esta es la aproximación que quiero darle en este artículo de COMeIN: centrarme en algunas manifestaciones de la crisis en las redes sociales, en forma de historias, ficcionadas o no.

Este artículo constituye una presentación del conjunto de los trabajos reunidos en este número de Economía, Sociedad y Territorio, dedicado al tema de la "reestructuración territorial". A fin de darle profundidad a la presentación hemos optado por hacer una breve reconstrucción del campo de los estudios urbanoregionales desde las disciplinas que lo han constituido, y lo siguen haciendo, teniendo en cuenta que es dentro de este campo que surge la propuesta analítica de la "reestructuración territorial". Esto no debería entenderse como un balance de la investigación urbano-regional, no es el objetivo y para ello nos remitimos a numerosos trabajos ya realizados.La rápida revisión de las tradiciones disciplinarias del campo de los estudios urbano-regionales nos permite postular un "giro hacia las políticas" como una característica de este campo en el contexto mexicano, que aun cuando pueda tener particularidades también reconoce similitudes con lo que sucede en este campo en otros países. Asimismo, consideramos una cuestión metodológica que de alguna manera ha operado como una constante en el campo: la concepción del territorio en escalas. Finalmente, hacemos un breve repaso de conceptos que se han ido acuñando o matizando en los últimos años para comprender fenómenos actuales. Entre ellos, sin duda el de reestructuración territorial ocupa un lugar destacado.

Pappa2 is a metalloproteinase which specifically cleaves IGFBP-3 and IGFBP-5 and in turn releases IGF-1. Recently, we have shown that a subcongenic Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rat strain containing a 0.71 Mbp of chromosome 13 which includes Pappa2 gene from salt-insensitive Brown Norway (26-P strain) is protected significantly (24 mmHg) from salt-induced hypertension (Cowley et al., 2016). Although it is recognized that Pappa2 modulates development of bone size, cranial cartilage and angiogenesis, its role in kidney development and function is unknown. The present study determined the contribution of Pappa2 to nephron development by comparing SS and 26-P rat strains. It was found that Pappa2 mRNA expression was 5-fold higher in embryonic kidney (day 20.5) of the salt-resistant 26-P rats compared with age-matched SS rats. Pappa2 mRNA expression significantly increased with age of kidney reaching a maximum at postnatal day 5 in both strains. Pappa2 mRNA expression at postnatal day 15 was found to be 9-fold higher in the kidney of 26-P compared with SS strain. Immunohistochemistry studies revealed that Pappa2 co-localized with IGFBP-5 in the ureteric bud indicating that Pappa2 could be important for ureteric branching and nephron endowment. Glomerulus/mm 2 was therefore determined by counting total number of glomeruli in kidney sections from pups starting from P0 to P20. The salt-resistant 26-P congenic strain exhibited significantly greater nephron density 9.03 and 7.07 glo/mm 2 compared to 6.89 and 4.85 glo/mm 2 in SS rat at day P15 and P20, respectively. It appears that the Brown Norway pappa2 allele variant prevents the reduced nephron numbers observed in SS rats and thereby protects these congenic rats from salt-induced hypertension.

This study aimed to assess the effects of a heterofermentative microbial inoculant and storage length on fermentation profile, aerobic stability, and nutrient composition in whole-plant sorghum silage (WPSS) from different varieties. Experiment 1, a completely randomized design with a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement, evaluated microbial inoculation [CON (50 mL distilled water) or LBLD (Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 21762, L. buchneri DSM 12856, and L. diolivorans DSM 32074; 300,000 CFU/g of fresh forage)] and storage length (14, 28, or 56 d) in forage WPSS. The LBLD silage had lower pH compared to CON, and greater concentrations of succinic acid, ethanol, 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD), 1-propanol, 2,3-butanediol and total acids. After 56 d, lactic acid concentration was greater for CON, while acetic acid and aerobic stability were greater in LBLD silage. Experiment 2, a completely randomized design with a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement, evaluated effects of microbial inoculation (same as experiment 1) and storage length (14, 28, or 56 d) in WPSS of three varieties [forage sorghum (Mojo Seed, OPAL, Hereford, TX), sorghum-sudangrass (Dyna-gro Seed, Fullgraze II, Loveland, CO, United States), or sweet sorghum (MAFES Foundation Seed Stocks, Dale, MS State, MS)]. The LBLD forage sorghum had greater acetic acid and 1,2-PD concentrations at 56 d and 28 d, respectively, but lower concentrations of propionic acid at 56 d and butyric acid at 14 and 28 d. Additionally, WSC concentration was greater for CON than LBLD at 28 d. Furthermore, CON sweet sorghum had greater lactic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid concentrations. However, greater acetic acid and 1,2-PD were observed for LBLD sweet sorghum. The CON sweet sorghum had greater concentration of WSC and yeast counts. The CON sorghum sudangrass had greater lactic and butyric acid concentrations than LBLD at 14 d, but lower acetic acid and 1,2-PD concentrations at 56 d. Yeast counts were greater for CON than LBLD sorghum sudangrass silage. Overall, results indicate inoculation of WPSS with Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 21762, L. buchneri DSM 12856, and L. diolivorans DSM 32074 improves heterofermentative co-fermentation allowing the accumulation of acetic acid concentration and increasing antifungal capacities and aerobic stability of WPSS.

El espíritu emprend-edor nos es adquirido genéti-camente, es un proceso de moldeado desde las aulas en términos de identificar y desarrollar las potenciali-dades del futuro empresario.Introducción Existen dos tipos de emprendimiento: Empren-dimiento por Oportunidad y Emprendimientos por Necesidad. Emprendimiento por oportunidad son las acciones que permiten identificar oportunidades, tendencias de mercado y generar una idea para satisfacer esas necesidades, un ejemplo podemos citar al creador de Facebook Mark Zuckerberg quien renovó el ecosistema digital, cambiando la forma de relacionarse con las personas, él no descubrió ni tampoco inventó nada nuevo, lo que hizo es innovar lo que ya existía en ese tiempo; según algunas revelaciones importantes, mencionadas por Oyuki Aceves, directora comercial de la empresa The Happy Freaks Factory, ya existieron otras organizaciones como como SixDegrees y LiveJournal.com quienes fueron los que desarrollaron las primeras redes sociales y fueron los primeros que ofrecía perfiles, chats cerrados, comunidades, blogs para que la gente interactuara entre sí. Pero solo Zuckerberg vio una oportunidad y en lugar de que sea una comunidad social cerrada, lo que hizo es darle un sentido más humano a la computación y abrirlo al mundo entero; le dio un giro de innovación a lo que ya existía. Este claro ejemplo es de una persona con visión de futuro y que buscó emprendimiento por oportunidad, a tal punto que él desecho ofertas tales como de la empresa Yahoo.com que ofreció comprarla por USD 1.000 millones en el año de 2006. Hoy en día esta red social está valorada sobre los USD 55.000 millones, tiene más de 900 millones de usuarios con un crecimiento de 100 millones por año, genera 450.000 puestos de trabajo.

This article is based on the Cognitive Psychology /Information Processing Theory, with emphasis on the study of the learning strategies used by university teachers in order to learn. This study is to analyze the frequency which undergraduate professors from a university in the north of Paraná use learning strategies related to sociodemographic variables. A total of 56 teachers participated in the study, being 57.14% female and 42.46% male ones. The data collection was done online using the Google Drive forms. The results showed that most of the teachers use more the Cognitive and Metacognitive Self-Regulation strategies comparing to the ones of Internal Resources Self-regulation and Contextual and Social. That female participants and teachers from the Letras Vernáculas (Portuguese teaching course) department are the most strategic teachers comparing to the one’s. It is important to emphasize the need for undergraduate courses to include in their syllabus some content about learning strategies, in order to provide to the teachers access to new models of teaching how to learn.ResumoEste artigo fundamenta-se na Psicologia Cognitiva/Teoria do Processamento da Informação, com ênfase no estudo de estratégias de aprendizagem utilizadas por professores universitários para aprender. Analisa a frequência do uso de estratégias de aprendizagem de professores de uma universidade do norte do Paraná em função de variáveis sociodemográficas. Participaram da pesquisa 56 professores, sendo 57,14% do sexo feminino e 42,46% do sexo masculino. A coleta de dados foi online, por meio de formulários do Google Drive. Os resultados evidenciaram que grande parte dos professores utilizam com maior frequência as estratégias de Autorregulação Cognitivas e Metacognitivas se comparado as de Autorregulação de Recursos Internos/Contextual e Social. Os participantes do sexo feminino e professores do departamento de Letras Vernáculas apresentaram-se mais estratégicos. Ressalta-se a necessidade de incluir nos cursos de licenciatura os conteúdos sobre estratégias de aprendizagem, a fim de possibilitar aos professores acesso ao conhecimento de novos modelos de ensinar a aprender.ResumenEste artículo se fundamenta en la Psicología Cognitiva/Teoría del Procesamiento de la Información, con énfasis en el estudio de estrategias de aprendizaje utilizadas por profesores universitarios para aprender. Analizar la frecuencia de uso de estrategias de aprendizaje por parte de profesores de cursos de licenciatura de formación docente de una universidad del norte de Paraná, en función de variables sociodemográficas. Participaron de la investigación 56 profesores, de los cuales un 57,14% es de sexo femenino y un 42,46% de sexo masculino. La recolección de datos se realizó en línea, por medio de formularios de Google Drive. Los resultados evidenciaron que la mayor parte de los profesores utilizan más las estrategias de Autorregulación Cognitivas y Metacognitivas en comparación con las de Autorregulación de Recursos Internos/Contextual y Social. Los participantes del sexo femenino y profesores del departamento de Letras Vernáculas son los más estratégicos comparados con los demás. Se destaca la necesidad de que los cursos de licenciaturas de formación docente incluyan en sus contenidos sobre estrategias de aprendizaje, con el fin de posibilitar a los profesores el acceso a conocimiento de nuevos modelos de enseñar a aprender.Palavras-chave: Psicologia cognitiva, Estratégias de aprendizagem, Formação de professores. En 2004, X. Andrade, antropólogo, creó una plataforma de arte llamada Corporación Full Dollar. Entre junio y agosto de 2013, Andrade presentó The Full Dollar Collection of Contemporary Art, en la galería dpm (Guayaquil) y en El Conteiner (Quito). The Full Dollar es una serie de 23 imágenes elaboradas por Victor «Don Pili» Escalante, oriundo de Playas, quien, en su propuesta, se apropia de obras de arte contemporáneo y las reconstruye bajo el lenguaje de la gráfica popular. post(s) presenta una conversación con Andrade sobre los temas que giran alrededor del proyecto: la crítica al mercado, la réplica, la cultura popular…Anamaría Garzón (AG): En las últimas décadas, las tendencias del arte contemporáneo apuntan hacia corrientes que convierten al artista en etnógrafo (Hal Foster) o en historiador (Mark Godfrey). Haces un proceso a la inversa: el antropólogo como artista. ¿Puedes explicar cómo ejecutas ese tránsito inverso?X. Andrade (XA): Recorro un camino de doble vía plagado de obstáculos. Por un lado están las discusiones del arte, que hablan del artista como etnógrafo, y dan cuenta de un traslado de los artistas hacia otro tipo de praxis a través de estrategias distintas a las usuales. Y, por otro, está el interés de la antropología por el arte contemporáneo, trazable a partir de una genealogía más bien corta, a un par de nichos de discusión que están centrados en Europa, a través de Amanda Ravetz, Arnd Schneider y Christopher Wright, quienes han publicado varios volúmenes en esta dirección; y en Estados Unidos, a través de los aportes de George Marcus, Fred Myers, Sally Price y James Clifford. Mis influencias teóricas más importantes vienen del lado de la antropología y de las discusiones sobre las formas posibles de hacer trabajo de campo, ya no como una instancia de observación participante, sino como una instancia de catalización de procesos de conocimiento donde el antropólogo moviliza discusiones a partir del reconocimiento sobre su presencia activa en el campo. Las exhibiciones de The Full Dollar Collection of Contemporary Art son cortes en un proyecto de investigación más amplio que he tratado de sistematizar alrededor de «lo popular» en distintos años. Ahora trabajo con el lenguaje de la ilustración popular en diálogo directo con un pintor heredero de dicha tradición, «Don Pili» Escalante, del pueblito pesquero de Playas, Ecuador. El hecho de que sea un trabajador de provincia es importante porque su trabajo como rotulista habla fehacientemente de la importancia de la localidad y de cómo aquella expresa flujos regionales y globales paralelamente.Hugo Burgos (HB): Hay una doble entrada: el sentido que viene dado por lo artístico, y la antropología renunciando a la objetividad para empezar a colaborar. Pero al generar este giro debes transparentar: ¿dónde está tu intención política, tu relación ética con la obra? Podríamos asumir que no te debes a nadie, pero es un trabajo colaborativo. Hay un tallerista, y si bien el producto es ilícito, la persona no escapa de ese doble anclaje. ¿Cómo lo negocias y dónde están esas costuras?XA: Esta exhibición ha despertado una serie de preguntas, porque una cosa es establecer una relación dialógica con un informante en un proceso etnográfico, y otra es trabajar con alguien a quien comisionas obra y [donde] el punto de partida es un intercambio económico. Mi interés sobre el coleccionismo parte de la lectura del libro del Lindemann [Coleccionar Arte Contemporáneo],1 que es una especie de biblia para mi proyecto, donde se compilan las voces de la gente dura del coleccionismo —los que hacen billete—, y la única voz que está excluida es la del artista. Entonces, ¿es una relación etnográfica la establecida para mi colección? Sí y no. Tenemos un diálogo que está sujeto a la lógica de producción de una obra que yo comisiono y parte de un intercambio mercantil claro y sin misterios. Don Pili espera un pago, determinado por cómo tasa su obra con respecto a las obras o trabajos que hace cotidianamente desde hace mucho tiempo, y ese precio ha ido evolucionando de manera sui géneris durante estos cuatro años de colaboración. Son solo 23 piezas producidas desde 2009. No he logrado comisionarle una por mes, por ejemplo, para que tenga un recurso estable adicional a su salario. Pero eso ya marca una diferencia. En el momento en que entras a una relación económica, mi política es tener las reglas claras. Parte del método es distinguir cómo establecemos el diálogo sobre las obras; la otra parte es cómo manejamos la creación de valor de las obras. Cuando se exhibieron en Guayaquil se vendieron siete, y para cada uno eso significa algo diferente. Ha generado probablemente una serie de sospechas de parte de Don Pili hacia mí, sospechas en el buen sentido. No se han desatado tensiones, pero sí preguntas sobre el modus operandi del arte. Mi posición es más compleja que en una etnografía tradicional porque en este momento puedes leer mi rol como el de un marchante de la obra de Don Pili, como un curador, o como un coleccionista de la obra que forma parte de mi colección privada de arte que ahora se hace pública y sale por primera vez a la venta. Porque así nació el proyecto, con el afán de crearme —para mi propio consumo— una colección de arte contemporáneo en el lenguaje de la rotulación popular.HB: ¿Después eso se desborda a la academia, a la academia dura de papel y presentaciones? Porque también es ilícito por ese lado, hay un tráfico de una práctica mercantilizada.XA: Soy consciente de que el proyecto genera un espacio dialógico bastante particular porque sé que mi circuito no se intersecta normalmente con el de Don Pili. En Los Ángeles2 traté de usar el mismo método, con un artista visual que cede su obra y un rotulista a quien le pido que se apropie y la convierta en un rótulo comercial. Pero en esa instancia de diálogo los rotulistas piden que se les trate como artistas. Ello revela que, en Los Ángeles, las relaciones de poder entre arte y rotulismo son diferentes, se cruzan, los rotulistas son gente formada en escuelas, etc. Entonces esa etiqueta que la manejo tan fácilmente aquí —si ves cómo la prensa lidia con Don Pili es fascinante, ciertos periodistas lo ven como un «rotulista» y creo que hasta ahora nadie lo califica como «artista», que es como yo lo veo— refleja desencuentros y un contexto de relaciones de poder claramente estructuradas y desiguales, de las que yo soy consciente. Hay expectativas y agendas diferentes de mi parte y de parte de Don Pili, quien quiere aprovechar el proyecto para hacerse ver como un artista capaz de reproducir lo que le pongas en frente.AG: ¿Cómo es el proceso de toma de decisiones, la selección de obras y de títulos? ¿En qué medida aporta Don Pili en la intervención?XA: En 2009, fui a Playas con el libro referido y le pedí que trabajáramos sobre tres imágenes: las de Sarah Lucas, Gilbert and George y Paul McCarthy, una selección arbitraria realmente. Le pedí que hiciéramos una prueba, que destacara los materiales que usa para pintar, el esmalte, el colorido… Le pedí que absorbiera desde su tradición tipográfica y que creara unos rótulos donde la tipografía se articulara con la imagen, y que de esa manera sirviera para ilustrar un negocio hipotético. Don Pili lo entendió a su manera y la única pregunta que hizo fue: «¿El rótulo va a ser colocado dentro o fuera del negocio?», pensando las obras desde su propia locación y lectura del proyecto. Quise tener un método que funcionara de forma automática, donde jugáramos con el nombre del artista o de la obra, y viéramos hasta qué punto podemos lidiar con el poder ilustrativo de la imagen.AG: ¿Crees que más que hablar de apropiación de imágenes se puede hablar de reconstrucción en el lenguaje de la gráfica popular? Porque no solo se apropian y replican, sino que crean con otros medios, es evidente en los materiales, las pinceladas, los colores…XA: Sí. No es mera apropiación. En Los Ángeles, Irene Tsatsos, directora del The Armory Center for the Arts, me decía que es un proyecto basado en la falsa traducción, porque cuando Don Pili traduce una imagen como la de Gilbert and George, lo hace a partir de su tradición rotulista y altera significativamente la imagen. El original de esa obra, Sting-land, es de enorme escala, y Don Pili lo reduce a una placa de madera y esmalte, agrega tipografía y texto para que funcione como rótulo, y en esa traducción hay una suma de traducciones fallidas en el camino. También hay que tener en cuenta que Don Pili necesita optimizar su tiempo, entonces utiliza talleristas; y cuando meten la pata, pone el grito en el aire y decide hacer la obra él mismo. Esas cosas juegan bien con el proyecto, que es copia de copia, copia fallida de copia.Y con referencia a la pregunta sobre la academia, algo que me fascina es que ahí se acostumbra a defender el derecho autoral, pero aquí no. ¿Quién es dueño de qué? Don Pili hace patente su autoría en algunas de las obras, no en todas. El proyecto es mío, la factura manual es suya, pero algunos giros y textos son míos. Entonces es muy complicada esa cuestión de autoría. El rótulo principal de la galería, donde dice Full Dollar Collection, es una apropiación de Don Pili de un diseño de Oswaldo Terreros, quien a su vez intenta aludir a un diseño desde la gráfica popular. Todos terminamos en esa lógica de la réplica, y eso es lo valioso para mí como artista/antropólogo. Hablamos de La vida social de las cosas a partir de Appadurai, y seguimos enfatizando en el referente único y auténtico cuando la mayoría de nosotros vivimos con réplicas, las adoramos, tenemos altares de réplicas religiosas en nuestras casas… Como antropólogo, me interesa el valor de la réplica. Como artista, mis verdaderos intereses están en las copias. Con tanto legado visual creado, ¿para qué me voy a preocupar de ser original? Con la derrota del genio artístico, ¿para qué reiterar su valor? Lo popular es algo imbuido de la naturaleza serial de las cosas; eso es lo que me interesa destacar: la serie y el aura que emite la copia.AG: Al hablar del valor de la réplica y de economía visual, también propones un juego para encontrar referentes en un lugar donde las obras de muchos de los artistas ni siquiera se conocen, y propones una crítica al hipermercantilismo en un lugar donde no hay siquiera un mercado.XA: Buen punto, y se puede ver que hay una decisión explícita al respecto, reflejada en la ausencia de placas museográficas. La muestra está diseñada para ser una especie de prueba sobre el saber del arte contemporáneo en el medio ecuatoriano. La primera opción de los visitantes es total ignorancia: alguien entra, lee la serie como rótulos y dice: «¿Qué hace eso en la galería?». La segunda es que tal vez se topen con Jeff Koons o con Damien Hirst, que son imágenes icónicas de los noventa, y tengan una pista; pero después tienes esta serie de rótulos que son absurdos, rótulos que son jocosos, irónicos, sarcásticos. Es una crítica al coleccionismo de arte a nivel global, que ciertamente no alude a dinámicas locales, y por otro lado está la idea de jugar con el nivel de conocimiento que tenemos sobre esas tradiciones. Además, el arte juega con estrategias con las que me identifico plenamente porque los códigos de corrección política de la academia me resultan extremadamente aburridos. El sarcasmo, la ironía, la parodia, esos códigos que están excluidos de la academia me permiten hacerlos patente en todos los proyectos que hago con Full Dollar. El arte me salva de la academia, aunque lo que hago sea antropología por otros medios.HB: ¿El énfasis por usar rotulación, que es un lenguaje mercantilizado, como elemento de traducción para Don Pili, tiene que ver con la idea de dar una visibilidad emblemática a la cultura popular, que también condensa lo mercantilista, el mundo de consumo?XA: Exactamente. Cuando me dijeron que definiera el proyecto, dije que es una crítica al coleccionismo contemporáneo a través del lenguaje de la rotulación popular; y eso tiene una doble misión. Por un lado, entrometer las dinámicas de rotulación o las tradiciones de la gráfica popular dentro de espacios legitimados del arte, con todo lo precarios que son en el medio. Desde mi mirada de antropólogo interesado en culturas populares, también quise resaltar que tenemos un legado interesante al respecto, porque la rotulación en Ecuador es bastante similar a la de Perú o Argentina, y no conocemos la genealogía de esos flujos. Entonces, la importancia de la rotulación popular tiene que ver con formular una crítica al coleccionismo desde esa lógica, mostrando un conflicto entre esos mundos, si se quiere, entre lo bajo y lo alto, que es tan problemático. Y aparte está una de las misiones que tiene este tipo de proyectos, que es visibilizar un legado cuyo estatus de «ecuatoriano» es dudoso precisamente por sus conexiones con flujos más amplios y que necesitan todavía ser trazados desde la historia, en este caso representado magníficamente por el trabajo de Don Pili.HB: Es interesante pensar también que todo esto es muy benjaminiano, en el sentido de «la obra de arte en la era de la reproductibilidad técnica». Creo que nunca se aboga o se espera el original. Vivimos en un mundo de falsos, de copias de las copias. Escoge un ámbito y es un reciclaje. Vivimos eternamente en el pasado, citando a Jameson o a Appadurai. Entonces, ¿cuál es el siguiente nivel de discusiones que podemos punzar, potenciar o movilizar?XA: Creo que hay varios. Uno tendría que ver con las discusiones que tenemos en antropología: ¿qué tipo de tradiciones de estudios se establecen? ¿Cuáles son los objetos legítimos de reflexión antropológica? Ahí viene la idea de la réplica y la apropiación, y creo que hay que tratarlo como un campo de legitimación. La gente que investiga en cultura material está abogando por eso. Para la subdisciplina de antropología visual, que es el campo donde me muevo en el país, lo que me interesa es fomentar otros tipos de referentes y objetos de estudios, quizás contrarios a la trayectoria andeanista de la disciplina. En el campo del arte no soy el primero que hace eso, ni mucho menos. Todo lo contrario. Hay casi un siglo de transposiciones desde el ready made, el collage surrealista, las apropiaciones y recontextualizaciones dadaístas, y las convenciones pop, pero estoy tratando de provocar una discusión que tiene que ver con las fronteras entre quién es artista y quién no; las relaciones de poder en la producción del sistema del arte; por qué un antropólogo puede pasar las fronteras del arte y un artista tiene más reticencias para ser acogido en el campo de la teoría; quiénes me brindan la autoridad para hablar desde el campo del arte; cuáles son los dispositivos que legitiman mis prácticas; cómo se generan sospechas o indiferencia en el arte y en la antropología. El camino que recorro es de doble vía pero poblado de obstáculos disciplinarios, resultantes de la multiplicidad de sospechas y competencias que han constituido históricamente la relación entre antropología y arte, desde la eficacia simbólica de Lévi-Strauss, pasando por la etnoestética de Howard Murphy hasta, con Alfred Gell, la comprensión del arte de la otredad a través de las preguntas puestas sobre la mesa por el arte conceptual. Si el peso de la mirada modernista ha encapsulado buena parte del debate entre ambos campos —preguntas sobre autenticidad, originalidad, genio, funcionalidad, etc.—, ahora hay una interrogación más productiva sobre el arte y el mundo de losobjetos. Y ver eso es fascinante, porque abre preguntas sobre qué significa hacer una réplica y hacer evidente las variaciones que se dan a nivel manual, que fueron elecciones deliberadas de Don Pili, para que el cuadro no sea una copia, pese a que esa era la consigna.HB: Mary Douglas decía que la antropología es la disciplina textual por excelencia: traer el conocimiento, la experiencia, y ponerla en otro texto. Don Pili hace eso, en un registro limitado, pero ocurre. Hay un conocimiento y una manera de acceder. Es interesante leerlo de esta manera, como un juego de espejos, porque hay una lectura de Don Pili sumada a las reglas del sistema de representación. IntroductionCatastrophe surrounds us perpetually: from the Queensland floods, Christchurch earthquake, global warming, and Global Financial Crisis to social conflicts, psychological breaking points, relationship failures, and crises of understanding. As a consequence of the pervasiveness of catastrophe, its representation saturates our everyday awareness. On a daily basis we encounter stories of people impacted by and coping with natural, economic, ecological, and emotional disasters of all kinds.But what is the relationship between culture, catastrophe, and creativity? Can catastrophe be an impetus for the creative transformation of societies and individuals? Conversely, how can culture moderate, transform, and re-imagine catastrophe? And in the final analysis, how should we conceive of catastrophe; does catastrophe have a bad name? These questions and others have guided us in editing the “catastrophe” issue of M/C Journal. The word catastrophe has been associated with extreme disaster only since the 1700s. In an earlier etymological sense, catastrophe simply connoted “a reversal of what is expected” or, in Western literary history, a defining turn in a drama (Harper). Catastrophe derives from the Greek katastrophe for “an overturning; a sudden end.” As this issue clearly demonstrates, whilst catastrophes vary in scale, context, and meaning, their outcomes are life-changing inversions of the interpersonal, social, or environmental norm. In The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization, political scientist Thomas Homer-Dixon echoes this definition and argues that catastrophe “can be a source of immense creativity—a shock that opens up political, social, and psychological space for fresh ideas, actions, institutions, and technologies that weren't possible before” (23). According to Homer-Dixon and on a hopeful note, “in any complex adaptive system, breakdown, if limited, can be a key part of that system's long-term resilience and renewal” (308). Indeed, many of the articles in this issue sound a note of hope. Catastrophe and Creativity The impetus for this issue comes from the Catastrophe and Creativity symposium convened at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, in 2012. The symposium brought together artists and researchers from around Australia to engage with the theme “catastrophe.” The organisers encouraged participants to conceptualise catastrophe broadly and creatively: from natural disasters to personal turning points, and from debilitating meltdowns to regenerative solutions. As a result, the topics explored in this issue stretch deeply and widely, and demonstrate the different forms and scales of catastrophe. Many of the 24 articles submitted for possible inclusion in this issue emerged as responses to the symposium theme. Distinct moods and meanings of catastrophe reverberate in the final selection of 12. The articles that shape the issue are intimate, collective, and geographical engagements with and reflections upon cataclysm that move from the highly personal to the global and speak of countries, communities, networks, friends, families, and colleagues. As a collection, the articles re-envision catastrophe as a pathway for creative interventions, artistic responses, community solidarities, social innovations, individual modes of survival and resilience, and environmental justices. In thinking through the relationship between catastrophe and culture, the authors challenge existing discourses and ways of knowing trauma, and offer fresh interpretations and hope. Catastrophe leads to metanoia: a change of perception after a significant crisis. The editors appreciate that there are no hierarchies between interpretations of catastrophe. Instead, the articles represent a dialogue between diverse experiences of pain, disaster, and abuse, as well as different theories about the nature of catastrophe—from the catastrophic loss of millions through genocide to the impact of trauma on an individual’s body and psyche. Part of the challenge of crafting this issue of M/C Journal has been in delineating what constitutes catastrophe. Admittedly we end up with more questions than we started with. Is catastrophe the same as trauma? Is it disaster? When is it apocalypse? Can catastrophe entail all these things? Who is silenced, and who can tell the narratives of catastrophe? How? Despite these unanswerable questions, we can be certain that catastrophe, as described by the authors, foundationally changes the fabric of human and non-human being in the world. The authors leave us with the lingering reverberations and resonances of catastrophe, revealing at the same time how catastrophic events can “reverse the expected” in the true sense of the word. The transformative potential of catastrophe is prominent in the issue. Some authors call for justice, support, inspiration, and resilience—on personal and community levels. The contributions remind us that, after catastrophe, the person, society, or planet will never be the same. Responses to Catastrophe The issue opens with the intimate nature of catastrophes. A feature article by esteemed Canadian academic and poet Lorri Neilsen Glenn takes the form of a lyric essay originally presented as the keynote address at the symposium. Composed of extracts from her book Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry (published here with kind permission of the author and Hagios Press) and reflective interludes, Neilsen combines her acute academic insights with personal experiences of loss to create evocative prose and poetry that, as she says, “grounds our grief in form […] connects us to one another and the worlds.” Her work opens for the reader “complex and nuanced understandings of our human capacities for grief.” In this piece, Neilsen speaks of personal catastrophe through lyric inquiry, a method she has described eloquently in the Sage Handbook of the Arts in Qualitative Research. The second feature article is a commentary on Neilsen’s work by the equally esteemed feminist scholar Lekkie Hopkins. In her article, Hopkins explains Neilsen’s journey from literacy researcher to arts-based social science researcher to poet and lyric inquirer. Hopkins uses her reflections on the work of Neilsen in order to draw attention, not only to Neilsen’s “ground-breaking uses of lyric inquiry,” but also to another kind of communal catastrophe which Hopkins calls “the catastrophe of the methodological divide between humanities and the social sciences that runs the risk of creating, for the social sciences, a limiting and limited approach to research.” In her article “Casualties on the Road to Ethical Authenticity,” Kate Rice applies a powerful narrative inquiry to the relationship between catastrophe and ethics. As a playwright experienced in projects dealing with personal catastrophe, Rice nevertheless finds her usual research and writing practice challenged by the specific content of her current project—a play about the murder of innocents—and its focus on the real-life perpetrator. Ambivalent regarding the fascinated human response such catastrophe draws, Rice suggests that spectacle creates “comfort” associated with “processing sympathy into a feeling of self-importance at having felt pain that isn’t yours.” She also argues against a hierarchy of grief, noting that, “when you strip away the circumstances, the essence of loss is the same, whether your loved one dies of cancer, in a car accident, or a natural disaster.” In an article tracing the reverberation of catastrophe over the course of 100 years, Marcella Polain explores the impact of the Armenian Genocide’s 1.5 million deaths. Through a purposefully fragmented, non-linear narrative, Polain evokes with exquisite sensitivity the utter devastation the Genocide wreaked upon one family—her own: “When springs run red, when the dead are stacked tree-high, when ‘everything that could happen has already happened,’ then time is nothing: ‘there is no future [and] the language of civilised humanity is not our language’” (Nichanian 142).The potentiality that can be generated in the aftermath of catastrophe also resonates in an article co-authored by Brenda Downing and Alice Cummins. (A photograph of Downing’s performance aperture is the issue’s cover image.) In their visceral evocation, the catastrophe of childhood rape is explored and enfleshed with a deft and generous touch. Downing, embodying for the reader her experience as researcher, writer, and performer, and Cummins, as Body-Mind Centering® practitioner and artistic director, explore the reciprocity of their collaboration and the performance aperture that they created together. Their collaboration made possible the realisation that “a performance […] could act as a physical, emotional, and intellectual bridge of communication between those who have experienced sexual violence and those who have not.” Maggie Phillips evokes the authoritative yet approachable voice of her 2012 symposium presentation in “Diminutive Catastrophe: Clown’s Play;” her meditation on clowns and clowning as not only a discipline and practice, but also “a state of being.” In response to large-scale catastrophe, and the catastrophic awareness of “the utter meaninglessness of human existence,” the clown offers “a tiny gesture.” As Phillips argues, however, “those fingers brushing dust off a threadbare jacket may speak volumes.” By inducing “miniscule shifts of consciousness” as they “wander across territories designated as sacred and profane with a certain insouciance and privilege,” clowns offer “glimpses of the ineffable.” In “Creativity in an Online Community as a Response to the Chaos of a Breast Cancer Diagnosis,” Cynthia Witney, Lelia Green, Leesa Costello, and Vanessa Bradshaw explore the role of online communities, such as the “Click” website, in providing support and information for women with breast cancer. Importantly, the authors show how these communities can provide a forum for the expression of creativity. Through Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “flow” (53), the authors suggest that “becoming totally involved in the creative moment, so as to lose all track of time” allows women temporary space to “forget the trials and worries of breast cancer.” By providing a forum for women and their supporters to reach out to others in similar situations, online communities, inspired by notions of creativity and flow, can offer “some remedy for catastrophe.” A different impulse pervades Ella Mudie’s insightful examination of the Surrealist city novel. Mudie argues against the elision of historical catastrophe through contemporary practices; specifically, the current reading in the field of psychogeography of Surrealist city dérives (drifts) as playful city walks, or “an intriguing yet ultimately benign method of urban research.” Mudie revisits the Surrealist city novel, evoking the original “praxis of shock” deployed through innovative experiments in novelistic form and content. Binding the theory and practice of Surrealism to the catastrophic event from which it sprang—the Great War—Mudie argues against “domesticating movements” which “dull the awakening power” of such imaginative and desperate revolts against an increasingly mechanised society. Through discussions of natural disasters, the next three articles bring a distinctive architectural, geographical, and ecological stream to the issue. Michael Levine and William Taylor invoke Susan Sontag’s essay “The Imagination of Disaster” in conceptualising approaches to urban recovery and renewal after catastrophic events, as exemplified by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The authors are interested explicitly in the “imagination of disaster” and the “psychology, politics, and morality of rebuilding,” which they find absent in Sontag’s account of the representation of urban cataclysms in 1950s and 60s science fiction films. Levine and Taylor’s article points to community ethics and social justice issues that—as they outline through different examples from film—should be at the centre of urban reconstruction initiatives. Interpretations of what is meant by reconstruction will vary substantially and, hence, so should community responses be wide-ranging. Extending the geo-spatial emphasis of Levine and Taylor’s article, Rod Giblett theorises the historical and environmental context of Hurricane Katrina using Walter Benjamin’s productive notion of the “Angel of History.” However, Giblett offers the analogous metaphor of the “Angel of Geography” as a useful way to locate catastrophe in both time (history) and space (geography). In particular, Giblett’s reading of the New Orleans disaster addresses the disruption of the city’s ecologically vital habitats over time. As such, according to Giblett, Katrina was the culmination of a series of smaller environmental catastrophes throughout the history of the city, namely the obliteration of its wetlands. Benjamin’s “Angel of History,” thereby, recognises the unity of temporal events and “sees a single, catastrophic history, not just of New Orleans but preceding and post-dating it.” Giblett’s archaeology of the Hurricane Katrina disaster provides a novel framework for reconceptualising the origins of catastrophes. Continuing the sub-theme of natural disasters, Dale Dominey-Howes returns our attention to Australia, arguing that the tsunami is poised to become the “new Australian catastrophe.” Through an analysis of Australian media coverage of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, Dominey-Howes asks provocatively: “Has extensive media coverage resulted in an improved awareness of the catastrophic potential of tsunami for Australians?” After speaking with more than 800 Australians in order to understand popular attitudes towards tsunami, the author responds with a definitive “no.” In his view, Australians are “avoiding or disallowing the reality; they normalise and dramaticise the event. Thus in Australia, to date, a cultural transformation about the catastrophic nature of tsunami has not occurred for reasons that are not entirely clear.” As the final article in the issue, “FireWatch: Creative Responses to Bushfire Catastrophe” gives insights into the real-world experience of managing catastrophes as they occur, in this case, bushfires in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. Donell Holloway, Lelia Green, and Danielle Brady detail an Australian Research Council funded project that creatively engages with Kimberley residents who “improvise in a creative and intuitive manner” when responding to catastrophe. The authors capture responses from residents in order to redesign an interface that will provide real-time, highly useable information for the management of bushfires in Western Australia. Conclusion This “catastophe” issue of M/C Journal explores, by way of the broad reach of the articles, the relationship between culture, creativity, and catastrophe. Readers will have encountered collective creative responses to bushfire or breast cancer, individual responses to catastrophe, such as childhood rape or genocide, and cultural conceptualisations of catastrophe, for example, in relation to New Orlean’s Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The editors hope that, just like the metanoia that catastrophe can bring about (demonstrated so articulately by Downing and Cummins), readers too will experience a change of their perception of catastrophe, and will come to see catastrophe in its many fascinating iterations.
