Abstract:
The predaceous midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae; tribe Ceratopogonini) in the genera Schizonyxhelea Clastrier & Stilobezzia Kieffer in Mexico were recently addressed by Huerta & Grogan (2017) who described one new species in each of these genera. A re-examination of specimens in the Colección de Artrópodos con Importancia Medica (CAIM), from the states of Morelos and Yucatan, revealed an undescribed species that was previously identified as Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) femoralis Lane & Forattini from Yucatan by Huerta (2002) and Huerta & Grogan (2017). Herein, we describe and illustrate this species from the states of Morelos & Yucatan, Mexico, as Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) tobiasi Huerta & Grogan n. sp.

Crop and Pasture Science 61, no. 6 (2010): 435. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/cp09344.

Full text
Abstract:
Changes in pasture yield and botanical composition due to gypsum application were examined on Vertosols at two locations of differing soil sodicity, Grogan and Morangarell, in southern New South Wales. Two pasture treatments were examined. One was an annual pasture comprised of 3 annual legumes (2 subterranean clover Trifolium subterraneum L. cultivars, Clare and Riverina, and balansa clover T. michelianum Savi cv. Paradana), while the second treatment consisted of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) cv. Aquarius sown in a mixture with the same annual legumes. Gypsum had no effect on the establishment or persistence of lucerne at either site. Gypsum increased the number of subterranean clover seedlings present in autumn in annual swards at the more sodic Grogan site in each of the 4 years, but provided no difference when the clover was in a mixture with lucerne. Annual legume seed yields in annual-only swards increased with gypsum by up to 58% at Grogan and 38% at Morangarell. Seed yields of both cultivars of subterranean clover declined as a proportion of the total annual legume seed bank when lucerne was included in the mixture, in contrast to balansa clover (at Grogan) and the naturalised annual legumes, burr medic (M. polymorpha L.) and woolly clover (T. tomentosum L.), which all increased in relative seed yield in the presence of lucerne. Total pasture production at the Grogan site increased with gypsum by up to 15% per annum in annual swards and 36% in lucerne swards depending on the season. Yield responses to gypsum by the lucerne component were observed in 10 of the 13 seasonal yield measurements taken at Grogan. However, total pasture yield and seasonal yields were unaffected by both gypsum and pasture type at the less sodic Morangarell site. It was concluded that sowing a diverse mixture of annual legumes or polycultures was conducive to maintaining productive pastures on these spatially variable soils. Lucerne dried the soil profile (0.15–1.15 m) more than annual pastures at both sites. The combination of gypsum and lucerne enhanced water extraction at depth (0.6–1.15 m) at the Grogan site increasing the size of the dry soil buffer whereas gypsum increased soil water at depth (>0.6 m) under annual swards.

Abstract:
There are 160 valid species of Culicoides Latreille described from the Nearctic Region, but many are unknown as immatures or, although partially described, cannot be readily identified. We provide pupal diagnoses, descriptions, and a key to all seven known species of Culicoides subgenus Monoculicoides Khalaf occurring in the Nearctic biogeographic region. A diagnosis of several characters unique to this subgenus is provided to allow for the recognition of the included species from those of other subgeneric groupings. Microphotography of important morphological characters for both the key and descriptions are provided. This study highlights the usefulness of examining the pupae of Culicoides as a tool for species identification. The pupae of Culicoides grandensis Grogan & Phillips, C. occidentalis Wirth & Jones, and C. shemanchuki Grogan & Lysyk are newly described and those of C. riethi Kieffer, C. stigma (Meigen), and C. variipennis Wirth & Jones are redescribed in detail. The seventh species, C. sonorensis, was fully described recently.

Abstract:
The genus Downeshelea was described by Wirth and Grogan based on the diagnostic characters of the Monohelea multilineata species group. The first descriptions of species were based on body coloration, which resulted in confusion and misunderstanding of their identification. The aim of this study was to provide an updated diagnosis and description of Downeshelea, describe 18 new species, and redescribe 10 previously poorly described species. New records of species, a key for identification of all New World species, and a table with important morphometric data to distinguish both males and females of the various species are provided along with distribution maps of the 46 known New World species.

InBezzia varicolor(Coquillett) they are attached by muscles to dorsal internal tergal apodemes. When retracted, the sacs lie along the length of the apodemes. Suggested functions of the eversible sacs have ranged from roles in mating, mimicry of adult mayfly cerci to enhance predation, to glandular. However, histological examination showed no evidence of glandular tissue associated with the sacs, so a glandular function is discounted. We suggest other possible functions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Adrenal-renal fusion is a rare entity wherein the capsule of the adrenal gland is fused to the kidney. Here, we report a case of adrenal-renal fusion making intraoperative dissection challenging. We also report on four other cases of adrenal-renal fusion at our institution and a review of the literature. Although rare, radiologists and surgeons must be aware of this condition and consider it as a possibility, especially when dealing with upper pole renal lesions in order to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary resections. Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe genus Neurohelea Kieffer is restricted to its type species, N. luteitarsis (Waltl) and is returned to the Heteromyiini. The Nearctic species previously recognized as Neurohelea nigra Wirth and N. macroneura (Malloch) are members of the Ceratopogonini and are placed in the new genus Atyphohelea. Neurohelea nigra Wirth is a new synonym of the type species Atyphohelea macroneura (Malloch), new combination. The Baltic amber species Neurohelea cothurnata (Meunier) is also placed in Atyphohelea as a new combination. An unnamed species from Taiwan is described and the pupa of A. macroneura is newly described. The male of Neurobezzia granulosa (Wirth) is described for the first time. The male previously identified as N. granulosa by Grogan & Wirth (1978) is probably the male of Amerohelea frontispina (Dow & Turner) in the Palpomyiini. Medeobezzia Yu is regarded as a new synonym of Neurobezzia Wirth & Ratanaworabhan, which now includes three species. A new world key to the genera of male and female Heteromyiini is provided. The phylogenetic relationships of the described genera are discussed.
