Abstract:
This paper presents a parametric stability study of groin, or cross vaults, a structural element widely used in old masonry construction, particularly in Gothic architecture. The vaults’ stability is measured using the geometric safety factor (GSF), computed by evaluating the structure’s minimum thickness through a thrust network analysis (TNA). This minimum thickness is obtained by formulating and solving a specific constrained nonlinear optimisation problem. The constraints of this optimisation enforce the limit analysis’s admissibility criteria, and the equilibrium is calculated using indep

An examination of at least six views of Lindisfarne Priory dating from the late eighteenth century, at which time most of the nave was still standing, led to the surprising conclusion in an earlier study that the nave was covered by groin vaults. Because of the unequivocal evidence of ribbed vaults in the choir, transept arms and crossing, as well as in the nave aisles, it would be expected that the form of the nave vault was the same. Since the evidence provided by the early views has been greeted with some scepticism, this study documents the collapse and restoration of the nave during the n

In his article on "Hereford Cathedral" published in the Archaeological Journal in 1877, Sir George Gilbert Scott suggested that the Romanesque presbytery was originally covered with a high groin vault on the basis of the suitability of the broad pilasters on the piers for supporting transverse arches of such a vault. While Scott's case for a high vault has been generally accepted, it has not been seriously tested through a detailed examination of the fabric. This note presents new evidence in the masonry above the eastern crossing arch in support of a Romanesque high vault, considers the manne

The Basilica of Maxentius in Rome features the largest opus caementicium vaults known to have been constructed in the Roman Empire. The present paper presents a structural reconstruction of the building and initial stability analysis of its original geometry. The barrel vaults and groin vaults are analysed, together with the stability of the supporting and buttressing elements. This initial study yields that the original construction was stable. However, two of the three naves of the Basilica have collapsed and further study will be necessary for determining the causes of such structural failu

This research presents a new intervention methodology on arches and vaults of a Renaissance factory in the Colegio Santo Domingo de Orihuela (16th century) using 3D software LIDAR technology that verifies the execution process of the works studying the different charges states and structure behavior. This document aims to explain a working methodology in the monitoring of structural repair interventions in the architectural heritage, in the specific case of the replacement of traditional one-way timber joist frame slabs on structures of former, splay and groin arches between vaults. The present thesis is part of the wide work required by the SEBESMOVA3D (SEeismic BEhavior of Scaled MOdels of groin VAults made by 3D printers) project whose first motivation is the preservation of the cultural heritage in case of seismic events. Therefore, the main topic of the thesis is the analysis of the seismic response of scaled models of groin vaults, made of plastic 3D printed bricks filled with mortar, and subjected to shaking table tests performed at the EQUALS laboratory of the University of Bristol. The work has been developed on two parallel binaries: the processing of the displ

Vaults are an architectural element which during construction history have been built with a great variety of different materials, shapes, and sizes. The shape of these structural elements was often dependent by the necessity to cover complex spaces, by the needed loading capacity, or by architectural aesthetics. Within this complex scenario masonry patterns generates also different effects on loading capacity, load percolation and stiffness of the structure. These effects were been extensively investigated, both with empirical observations and with modern numerical methods. While most of them

Preserving monumental historic buildings has not been an easy task due to their high vulnerability to seismic events. Throughout the years, several studies have tried to predict their behavior with the use of different numerical models, but the response is such complex that it remains a challenge. One of the trending tools to simulate masonry is the Discrete Element Model (DEM), but unfortunately few researches have implemented the physical simulation to validate the numerical results, and that is the main motivation of this study, which aims to contribute to the better understanding of mason

The aim of this novel experimental study is to investigate the behaviour of a 2m x 2m model of a masonry groin vault, which is built by the assembly of blocks made of a 3D-printed plastic skin filled with mortar. The choice of the groin vault is due to the large presence of this vulnerable roofing system in the historical heritage. Experimental tests on the shaking table are carried out to explore the vault response on two support boundary conditions, involving four lateral confinement modes. The thesis deals for example with a possibility of occurrence of vault and with it associated change of state of stress, or with the pressure surges in the container. The settlement of Pučišća was particularly vulnerable. Therefore, the settlement was intensively fortified, and a series of thirteen individual small coastal towers was built, after which the entire settlement was named Castello Pucischia in 1600.
