The present research examined those factors that affect gross savings in the developing economy of Pakistan. Data from the period of 11 years from 2010 to 2020 was gathered from secondary sources. The study found that the inflation rate has a negative and significant relation with gross savings. It is also found that the interest rate has a negative and significant relation with gross savings. We also found that openness to the economy has a positive and significant relation with gross savings. Implications, discussion and future directions are also highlighted.

The mobilization of domestic resources is one of the key determinants of sustained economic growth. Improving domestic resource mobilization involves raising the level of national savings to enable a higher level of investment, hence a faster rate of economic growth. Over the past several years, Pakistan has maintained an economic growth of more than 6 percent which is laudable, but her performance with regard to savings has been poor. Abstract:
This chapter visits major macroeconomic parameters, such as gross domestic product, savings, and investment, and studies their movement, especially the peaks and troughs in the six decades of planning, 1951–2011. The growth performance of the economy is assessed by comparing the realized growth rate with the target set in the Five Year Plans. It identifies the periods when the growth rate failed to meet the target, and pinpoints the reasons behind the shortfall. The growth rates are measured for agriculture, industry, and services sectors, and the structural changes in the economy are explored. Tracing the course of investment in the public and private sector in the mixed-economy framework, it shows how the share of these two sectors in total investment and domestic product altered over time. Finally, it unfolds the nexus between savings, investment, and economic growth that is evident in different phases of the Plan periods.

This chapter provides additional empirical evidence on the efficiency in cooperative banks and savings banks by applying a stochastic frontier model to estimate the cost efficiency from nine countries over the period 2005 to 2011. The empirical results suggested that a higher rate of the gross domestic product (GDP) growth implies an increase in the inefficiency level, while smaller cooperative and savings banks are more efficient in managing costs compared to larger banks.

Abstract:
This study examines the effects of gross saving rates, gross capital formation, population aging, and life expectancy on income growth between 1985 and 2018 for selected emerging market and middle-income economies. The estimates by feasible generalized least squares (FGLS), fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), canonical cointegrating regressions (CCR), and Driscoll-Kraay methods show the impact of population aging on income growth is positive. However, life expectancy gives positive results for gross domestic product per capita growth and negative results for gross domestic product growth. The results confirm that there is still an increasing population for emerging economies in general. In this respect, they also point to the neutral view approach for these countries. This situation highlights the importance of considering the effects of population aging on sustainable economic growth in emerging countries. For this reason, decision makers in these economies must monitor population structures closely and carefully.

Abstract:
In discussing the life-cycle model, we focused on the individual-choice problem without taking into account the interaction between households, the production sector of the economy, and the government. In this chapter we take a broader perspective and embed the life-cycle model into a general equilibrium framework. In this framework, prices adjust in order to balance supply and demand in goods and factor markets and the government has to operate under some balanced-budget rules. As in the previous chapter, individuals save in order to smooth consumption over the life cycle. However now, individual savings behaviour endogenously determines the capital stock. This is the central difference from the static general equilibrium model discussed in Chapter 3. Since in our equilibrium framework we have to distinguish households within a given period according to their age or birth year, the models we study are called overlapping generations (OLG) models. In this chapter we introduce the most basic version of the OLG model and discuss the computation of a transition path and the intergenerational welfare effects of policy reforms. In Chapter 7 we extend this baseline model version in various directions. This subsection sketches the economic environment used in this chapter and Chapter 7. We describe the lifetime of people who inhabit the economy as well as their consumption decisions. Then we move on to the production side and the government structure. Finally, the equilibrium conditions for goods and factor markets which close the model are derived. Demographics As in Chapter 5 we assume that households in the model live for three periods. For simplicity we do not account for income and lifespan uncertainty. However, now in each successive period t a new cohort is born, where the number of households Nt in this cohort grows at a rate np,t, i.e. Nt = (1 + np,t)Nt−1. From Figure 6.1 one can understand why this demographic structure is called ‘overlapping generations’. In each period t a cohort Nt is born, but this ‘new’ cohort overlaps with the two cohorts Nt−1 and Nt−2 born in the previous two periods.
