Abstract:
With the 'Proceedings of the 1st virtual symposium on cosmic ray studies with neutron detectors' launches the new open access series 'Cosmic ray studies with neutron detectors'. The volume comprises the papers presented at the online meeting held in July 2020. The contributions show that neutron detectors on the ground provide significant results for studying the interaction of galactic cosmic rays with magnetic fields in the heliosphere, for accelerating energetic particles, and for a growing number of applications, including geophysics and space weather. The easily accessible databases around the project 'Real-Time database for high resolution Neutron Monitor measurements' (NMDB) make the original data readily available to a large user community.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the claim that that news from outside the United States has been declining. For over a century, prominent figures have been describing the citizenry as ill informed, especially about geography, and not merely inattentive but lazy or too stubborn to change. Former Sunday New York Times Editor Lester Markel, after a year of studying what he called the global challenge to the United States in the mid 1970s, concluded that “the public has scant information” and “makes little effort to understand.” After leading panel discussions with press, academic, and government experts and conducting interviews and surveys, he reported that prominent figures ranging from pollster George Gallup to Times editor C. L. Sulzberger were in consensus: people knew little about distant places. Not much has changed in the ensuing years. And as online access to information grew, the Columbia Journalism Review noted that “the American public is no better informed.”

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on grounding. In what sense might grounding be primitive? Perhaps conceptually or methodologically, but not metaphysically. Several ways of defining up a relation of grounding in terms of some kind of ontological superiority plus other connecting relations are explored. The chapter argues that the grounding pluralist, who accepts many metaphysically important grounding relations, and the grounding monist have reasons to believe in an additional relation of ontological superiority. The pluralist does because she needs to account for the unity of the generic relation of ground; it is not a mere disjunction, and so it is either a determinable or an analogous property. But these distinctions were accounted for in terms of naturalness, which is a kind of ontological superiority. The monist about grounding needs some way to defuse grounding variantism, a view analogous to quantifier variantism, and here again appealing to naturalness does the job.

Prasad, Purendra, Amar Jesani, and Sujata Patel, eds. Equity and Access. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199482160.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Equity and Access attempts to unravel the complex narrative of why inequities in the health sector are growing and access to basic health care is worsening, and the underlying forces that contribute to this situation. It draws attention to the way globalization has influenced India’s development trajectory as health care issues have assumed significant socio-economic and political significance in contemporary India. The volume explains how state and market forces have progressively heightened the iniquitous health care system and the process through which substantial burden of meeting health care needs has fallen on the individual households. Twenty-eight scholars comprising social scientists, medical experts, public health experts, policy makers, health activists, legal experts, and gender specialists have delved into the politics of access for different classes, castes, gender, and other categories to contribute to a new field of ‘health care studies’ in this volume. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach within a broader political-economy framework, the volume is useful for understanding power relations within social groups and complex organizational systems.

Full text
Abstract:
The main goal of this chapter is to argue that accessibilism in epistemology is incompatible with vehicle externalism in the philosophy of mind (also known as “the extended mind thesis”). As we shall see, however, there are strong arguments for both of these positions. On the one hand, there is a compelling argument for vehicle externalism: the parity argument from Clark and Chalmers (1998). On the other hand, there is a compelling argument for accessibilism: the Moorean argument from Smithies (2012). If accessibilism is incompatible with vehicle externalism, then both arguments cannot be sound. I resolve the tension by arguing that the Moorean argument succeeds, while the parity argument fails, and hence that vehicle externalism should be rejected on broadly epistemological grounds.

Jabbour, Pascal, and Eric Peterson, eds. Radial Access for Neurointervention. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780197524176.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Although femoral artery catheterization has been the mainstay of arterial access for cerebral angiography, there has been a recent increase in the use of transradial access among neurointerventionalists. Despite its widespread use among interventional cardiologists, there is a paucity of evidence for its use in the neurosurgical literature. With the constant evolution of device technology and the need of multimodal treatments for complex neurovascular pathologies, most neurointerventionalists resort to femoral artery access because of the vessel’s larger diameter and having been trained with that approach. However, transradial access confers a number of benefits, most notably lower risk of vascular complications, shorter recovery, and increased patient satisfaction and cost reduction. Femoral artery catheterization requires patients to tolerate a painful and uncomfortable procedure, with associated potential complications such as pseudo-aneurysm formation, retroperitoneal hematoma, and artery occlusion. Compared with groin access, radial artery catheterization has been shown to confer a lower risk of local neurovascular complications and improved quality-of-life metrics. This book is the first of its kind, detailing step by step all the technical nuances of the transradial approach in the neurointerventional world, from diagnostic cerebral angiograms to neurointerventional procedures. This is the perfect book for physicians who decided to make the transition of their practice to transradial.

Full text
Abstract:
The femoral artery is considered one of the most common access sites for endovascular interventions. Its accessibility, size, and ease of compression over the femoral head post intervention make it favorable for vascular access during endovascular interventions. Combined with the frequency with which the femoral artery is utilized in a variety of bypass and aortoiliac surgical interventions, scarred groins are frequently encountered. Further complicating femoral access are the rising rates of obesity that have doubled during the past 35 years, with more than two-thirds (68.6%) of American adults reported as overweight or obese as of 2012. Despite its frequency, a scarred groin presents a unique challenge to the interventionalist, particularly in obese patients. This chapter discusses considerations for managing the scarred groin.

de Vignemont, Frédérique. The Immunity of the Sense of Ownership. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198735885.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Are bodily self-ascriptions immune to error through misidentification (IEM)? It is classically assumed that I can be wrong about whose legs are crossed when I have access to them through vision, but not through proprioception. Although the epistemic difference between vision and proprioception is intuitive, one may question its generality. Judgements of ownership that are grounded on bodily sensations can indeed be incorrect, whereas the body can be visually presented in such a way that it can be only one’s own body. This chapter will reconsider which experiences can ground bodily judgements that manifest IEM. This will help us analysing the relationship between the phenomenological phenomenon of bodily ownership and the epistemic phenomenon of IEM. The chapter will argue that it is important to keep the two phenomena apart: one should not conceive of feelings of ownership as the phenomenological counterpart of bodily IEM.
