Abstract:
Overcrowding of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) region is a growing problem. Decades of treating this part of space like a scrap yard has caused it to become a hazardous environment for operating satellites. At present, the largest pieces of debris are being continuously tracked and satellite operators avoid them by maneuvering their spacecrafts out of the way. This approach is not possible for pieces that are smaller than 10 cm, since they are hard to detect and track as well as numerous. The exact number is not known but it is believed to be around 190 000. A number of different mitigation methods

Abstract:
A commercially available, tripod mounted, ground-based laser scanner was used to assess forest canopies and measure individual tree parameters. The instrument is comparable to scanning airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) technology but gathers data at higher resolution over a more limited scale. The raw data consist of a series of range measurements to visible surfaces taken at known angles relative to the scanner. Data were translated into three dimensional (3D) point clouds with points corresponding to surfaces visible from the scanner vantage point. A 20 m x 40 m permanent plot loc

However, the users have to acquaint themselves with the laser scanner before measurement so that they can estimate the effects of the instrument. Ground-based laser scanner can easily acquire large amounts of elevation data in a short time that offer high density and accuracy information to create three dimensional models of buildings. As the real environments are typically dynamic, moving object tracking becomes an inescapable problem. While the tracking algorithm becomes more and more elaborate, however, its performance in real world still can not be guaranteed. The major reason is that so far we do not have enough real data with ground-truth to evaluate and analysis the state of the art tracking algorithms . Reducing the soil impact of forest operations is a priority for improving sustainable forest management. Logging activities may alter soil in terms of both compaction and rutting. The overall aim of this thesis was to use an emerging methods approach to summarize how ground-based logging systems affect the soil in different working conditions. The thesis is based on four studies: the first applied a meta-analytic approach to machinery-induced soil compaction and its effect on the growth of forest plants; two studies tested new methods of rutting estimation after the trafficking of forest machi

This is an exciting time for Gravitational Wave (GW) theory and observations. From a theoretical standpoint, the grand-challenge problem of the full evolution of a Binary Black Hole (BBH) system has been solved numerically, and a variety of source simulations are made available steadfastly. On the observational side, the first generation of state-of-the-art GW detectors, LIGO and Virgo, have achieved their design goal, collected data and provided astrophysically meaningful limits. The second generation of detectors are expected to start running by 2015. Inspired by this zeitgeist, this thesis
