The yearly congestion costs in the US airline industry are estimated to be of the order of $2 billion. In [6] we have introduced and studied generic integer programming models for the static multi-airport ground holding problem (GHP), the problem of assigning optimal ground holding delays in a general network of airports, so that the total (ground plus airborne) delay cost of all flights is minimized. In 1986, the total profits of the U.S. airline industry were of the order of $800 million, while its total delay costs due to congestion approached the figure of $2 billion. This dissertation studies corporate cash holdings in Korea, with its own business groups("chaebols"), and the impact of Asian financial crisis in 1997-1998. The first essay examines the effects of cash on performance from 1994 to 2006. It first shows that cash-rich firms are more likely to survive and the exit rate of chaebol firms with large cash holdings during the crisis is much smaller.
