Vertebrate males frequently carry higher numbers of parasites than females. This bias in parasite loads could be a consequence of sexual selection. Grouping species are also assumed to be afflicted with larger numbers of parasites than solitary animals and associated costs of this parasitism could vary with group size or structure. I examined sex-biased parasitism and the influence of group size on parasite loads in Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a highly social species that occurs in the arid regions of southern Africa. Males carried three times as many ectoparasites as females, but f

We describe canonical forms for elements of a classical Lie group of matrices under similarity transformations in the group. Matrices in the associated Lie algebra and Jordan algebra of matrices inherit related forms under these similarity transformations. In general, one cannot achieve diagonal or Schur form, but the form that can be achieved displays the eigenvalues of the matrix. We also discuss matrices in intersections of these classes and their Schur-like forms. Such multistructered matrices arise in applications from quantum physics and quantum chemistry.

We see how the lamplighter groups have a linear conjugacy length function; we find a cubic upper bound for free solvable groups; for solvable Baumslag--Solitar groups it is linear, while for a larger family of abelian-by-cyclic groups we get either
