Abstract:
The discovery of tin on the Jos Plateau in the early 1900s heralded the influx of several foreign and indigenous mining companies. Mention must be made especially of events in the 1950s when the introduction of mechanized mining by such mining companies like the Bisichi Jenta Ltd resulted in higher production of minerals. Bisichi Jenta Ltd a British mining company held several mining leases on the Jos Plateau and the neighboring states of the present Adamawa and Nasarawa States. An investigation into the mining activities of this company suggests that the company stood out amongst it pairs esp

The objective of this work was to establish the gold and mercury losses in an artisanal mining deposit (Uke) in Nigeria to convince miners about their inefficiency and suggest changes in their gold extraction practices. Samples of feeds and tailings from five sluice box concentration processes previously ground in hammer mills below 1 mm (P80 = 0.5 mm) were systematically sampled every 15 min. for 4 h and sent for gold analyses by a fire assay and intensive cyanidation. Dry grain size analyses of primary and amalgamation tailings allowed us to find out in which size fraction gold and mercury a

The co-contamination of aquatic systems with antimony (Sb) and humic acid (HA) is a global concern due to their potential risks to human health and environment. In this research, three-level-three-variable Box–Behnken design (BBD) was investigated for simultaneous Sb(III) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal responses from groundwater by use of ferric chloride (FC) as a coagulant. This study focuses on three operating variables, including initial Sb(III) concentration (100, 550, and 1000 μg/L), HA concentration (2, 6, and 10 mgC/L) and FC dosages (20, 60, and 100 mg/L). A comparison is made between results for removal of suspended solids (SS) and biodegradable carbon pollutants (in terms of BOD5) from pilot-plant experiments in two types of downflow filters with different role and location in technological schemes for advanced treatment of urban wastewaters. The first type is a dual-media rapid gravity tertiary filter placed after a conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with primary sedimentation, activated sludge process and secondary sedimentation. The second type is a submerged biological aerated filter (BAF) in a two-stage system of fixed-film re

Introduction. Currently, more than 96% of the roads in our country are built with non-rigid pavements with bases made of dispersed materials of crushed stone, sand-gravel mixtures, sand, etc. Significant disadvantages of such road structures are high material consumption and significant operating costs, including those associated with low service life between repairs. According to expert estimates, Russia’s losses due to the poor quality of the highway network amount to 3% of gross domestic product. In 2017, the government decided to increase service life between repairs of federal highways, f

The design and balance-of-plant of an integrated anaerobic digestion (AD) biogas solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) demonstration plant is presented. A notable feature of the plant is the CO2 capture from the SOFC anode exhaust via an oxy-combustion reactor. The captured CO2 is fed to a photobioreactor installation downstream of the SOFC where C is fixed in an algae bio-fuel. The main plant sections are described in detail including the gas cleaning unit, fuel processing, SOFC ‘hot-box’, oxy-combustor, CO2/H2O condensation unit and finally algae bioreactor. Abstract:
Water contamination is a serious problem that endangers both aquatic and terrestrial life. Ecosystem balance is upset, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels are off, and eutrophication results, all of which have disastrous effects on the environment. Effective wastewater management and treatment are essential to resolving this issue to save lives and safeguard water resources. The term "water management" refers to a group of procedures used to collect, treat, and reuse wastewater. Phase separation, sedimentation, filtration, and oxidation are common traditional wastewater treatment techniques
