However, where rivers and aquifers are hydraulically connected, groundwater pumping has the potential to deplete streamflow. The chemistry of shallow groundwaters in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of New South Wales, Australia, is examined in terms of the degree of saturation with calcium minerals. Salinisation of the shallow groundwater system has occurred coincident with the development of irrigation in the Coleambally Irrigation Area.
