Kool, Jan Bart Jacobus. "Parameter estimation for unsaturated flow models." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/80247.

Full text
Abstract:
The estimation of parameters in models for soil unsaturated hydraulic properties from transient flow experiments via inversion of the governing initial-boundary value problem is examined. Emphasis is on the estimation of parameters from in-situ experiments where available data are in the form of spatially and temporally distributed water content and pressure head measurements. The inverse problem is formulated as a weighted least-squares problem. A simple but efficient Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is developed for its solution. Sensitivity analysis is used to determine optimal sampling strate

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the safe and sustainable development and management of groundwater resources in Ergene River Basin located in northwestern Turkey. A numerical groundwater model was developed for the Sandy Complex aquifer, which is the most productive and the most widespread aquifer in the basin. The finite difference model with 5900 cells was used to represent the steady and unsteady flow in the aquifer. The model was calibrated in two steps: a steady state calibration by using the observed groundwater levels of January 1970, followed by a transient calibration by using the observ

Contaminated land is a widespread, global issue affecting millions of people. Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide which often contaminates groundwater and drinking water supplies and is associated with adverse health outcomes. Biochar is the solid product of pyrolysis and is associated with several environmental benefits. It may be an effective remediation tool when used as a soil amendment. This thesis investigates the mechanisms through which biochar can immobilise atrazine, and the implications of the mechanisms for remediating contaminated land. The aerobic transformation of TCE and cis-DCE by a tetrabutoxysilane-grown microorganism (Vancheeswaran et al., 1999) led to the investigation of novel substrates, including benzyl alcohol, for promoting cometabolism. The culture grew on carboxylic compounds and alcohols, but did not grow on formate, methanol, methane, propane, butane, ethylene, benzene, toluene, or p-xylene. Cis-DCE transformation was observed when the culture grew on butyrate, glucose, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol, and phenol, and effectively transformed TCE, cis-DCE, and vinyl chloride when grown on phenol
