The current study explored gender differences in groups of boys and girls in a limited resource context. Forty same-sex groups of four children from kindergarten and grade four were observed during sessions in which groups played first with two different toys and then two different games. The toy and game sessions were constructed so children had to negotiate for a scarce resource (attractive toy and game winner's certificate). In the case of one of the toys the end of a player's turn was obvious to group members (explicit turn-taking toy), in the case of the other toy the end of a turn was no

In group living species animals commonly compete for limited resources such as food (Darwin 1859). Winning competition for food may be beneficial for an individuals survival or reproductive success (Williams 1966; Clutton-Brock 1988; Metcalfe et al 1995) but conflict with group members may be costly as it typically involves aggression (Huntingford&Turner 1987, Mesterton-Gibbons&Adams 1998). Asymmetries between individuals are predicted to determine the outcome of competition (Maynard-Smith&Parker 1976), and individuals are expected to steal food when the benefit to them is greatest (Barnard 19

Risk is inherent in many social and economic decisions, such as the choice of pathway in secondary school, the choice of major at university, job decisions, health-related behaviour, marriage, parenthood, migration and the allocation of financial assets. Recent research has shown that individual risk attitudes are not immutable personality traits, but are influenced by external factors with the potential to change them in more or less enduring ways, such as the ch

Food competition is an expected cost of group living. It is therefore puzzling that there is little evidence for competition among group-living folivorous monkeys. Given the expected advantages of group living, it is even more puzzling that folivores do not form larger groups despite this apparent lack of food competition. This has become known as the folivore paradox, and to date there is no broadly accepted theoretical solution. I then compare the outcomes of different market structures using basic welfare measures. Using a replicated Latin square design 48 Holstein cows were randomly assigned to groups of 6 cows. Abstract Many plant species inhabiting the seashore meadows of the Bothnian Bay, especially early successional ones, have become threatened. Isostatic land uplift creates virgin land for early successional species to colonise. However, at the same time it gradually elevates the habitat and eventually makes the habitat unsuitable for them. Disturbances of the waterfront may slow down succession and create new empty sites. In order to persist on the shores, pioneer species have to be able to colonise new sites by seeds, vegetative propagules or growth. In this thesis I studied the status of an

However, the main issue in feminine and masculine societies is what motivates people, which indicates that the effects of commission based salary systems needed to be examined from a cultural perspective. Many researches have pointed out that computer games can increase children’s learning outcome and interests. However, even though competitive games can increase the level of motivation, but at the same time it adversely affects the intrinsic motivation of students and hurts the confidence of learners with lower skill levels. Moreover, in a single classroom, the ability level of the students varies. The key fac

Nevertheless, in the networked collaborative learning environment, the learners are separated in different place. The teachers cannot supervise the whole students and the learners lack for the opportunities of face to face communication. It results the learners lack for learning motives, inducements and team centripetal force. Then the learners cannot enhance their learning effectiveness. This research tries to incorporate "comp

The thesis took the paper “Group competition for rents” published by Kate and Tokatlidu (1996) as reference and considered the carryover effect in the rent-seeking structure. Moreover, this research will focus on how groups’ members distribute their rent outlays in a two-stage group rent-seeking contest, and whether the winning group conside

It ranks data objects with a ranking function and reports the k objects with the highest scores. However, when an object has multiple scores, how to rank objects without information loss becomes challenging. In this paper, we model the object with multiple scores as an uncertain data object and the uncertainty of the object as a distribution of the scores, and consider a novel problem named Best-kGROUP query.
