Abstract:
Materiali per lo studio del diritto antidiscriminatorio is intended to provide a picture of most relevant legislation and jurisprudence in this sphere, at both European Union and national level. Divided into seven thematic sections – Sources, Gender, Age, Disability, Nationality, Race and ethnic origin, Religion and personal convictions – this collection sets up a direct comparison between European legislation and jurisprudence and the Italian enactment decrees. In this manner the editors, Chiara Favilli and Maria Paola Monaco, propose both to academics and to those working in the sector an innovative and useful instrument for combating discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, ethnic group, religion, age or sexual orientation.

Corò, Paola. Seleucid Tablets from Uruk in the British Museum. Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-246-8.

Full text
Abstract:
Between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the British Museum acquired as part of its cuneiform collections 120 economic tablets from Uruk dating to the Seleucid period; they belong to what has been described as “the most spectacular Hellenistic archives available today”. This book offers an analysis of the collection, accompanied by text editions. The approach adopted is to explore the documents in three main thematic sections: arable land, urban properties, and temple prebends. The administrative texts have been treated as a group. Particular attention is paid to the role played by specific families, individuals or groups in each area of interest, as well as to shedding new light on the ownership patterns and business strategies that characterised the activities of the parties to the documents.

Abstract:
This article describes the state of genocide studies, historicization, and causation, placing genocide into its historical context, and genocide in the world today. ‘Genocide’ is unfortunately ubiquitous, all too often literally in attempts at the destruction of human groups, but also rhetorically in the form of a word that is at once universally known and widely invoked. The comparative scholarship of genocide began with Raphael Lemkin and through the later Cold War period was continued by a small group of dedicated scholars. The discussion also opens the probing of the limits and the utility of the concept of genocide for historical understanding, and placing this crime back in its context that may often include mass non-genocidal violence. It also reflects on the debate about the relationship between individual acts of genocide and the wider political economy and norms of the worlds in which they occur.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides the first comprehensive treatment of out-of-court restructuring and post-commencement insolvency financing in the corporate group setting, domestically and internationally. Bringing together a collection of distinguished contributors-academics and practitioners at the forefront of insolvency practice and law reform efforts-the book addresses and critiques “state of the art” practice and work-arounds for financing out-of-court restructurings as well as judicial reorganisations, going-concern liquidations and administration proceedings of financially distressed global business groups. The book opens with a detailed introduction from the editors which provides an overview of domestic law issues and an exploration of principles guiding judicial and administrative cooperation to facilitate group financing in cross-border cases. The final section analyzes regional and global law reform and harmonisation progress to date. This book is a valuable resource for practitioners who must structure (and courts that must approve) financing for global enterprise groups in reorganisation. With another wave of global corporate group failures anticipated, practitioners, courts and policy makers are well served by a work describing cutting-edge advances in this field in domestic and cross-border cases.

Full text
Abstract:
This book engages the reader in a wide-ranging assessment of the legacy of Barack Obama—the “first Black president”—relative to Black politics. It uses its vantage point of being written during Donald Trump’s presidency to understand what Black politics has and has not inherited from the Obama administration. It is comprehensive in the number of constituencies and policy topics it covers. Its co-editors frame its chapters by explaining how both “inverted linked fate” and an “inclusionary dilemma” shaped the Obama presidency and legacy for Black politics. Nearly twenty prominent or emerging political scientists provide this book’s interior chapters, using quantitative and qualitative methods to draw conclusions. The first group of scholars examines the Obama administration’s impact upon the attitudes and perceived group interests of various Black constituencies, including voters, partisans, civil rights leaders, lobbyists, women, church leaders and members, and LGBTQ persons. The second group examines Obama’s impact upon Black policy interests, including civil rights, criminal justice reform, antipoverty, women’s welfare, healthcare reform, housing, immigration, and foreign affairs. In the conclusion, the co-editors consider what may confront the “next Black president” and the “next Black America.”

Cook, David. The Boko Haram Reader. Edited by Abdulbasit Kassim and Michael Nwankpa. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190908300.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Since it erupted onto the world stage in 2009, people have asked, what is Boko Haram, and what does it stand for? Is there a coherent vision or set of beliefs behind it? Despite the growing literature about the group, few if any attempts have been made to answer these questions, even though Boko Haram is but the latest in a long line of millenarian Muslim reform groups to emerge in Northern Nigeria over the last two centuries. The Boko Haram Reader offers an unprecedented collection of essential texts, documents, videos, audio, and nashids (martial hymns), translated into English from Hausa, Arabic and Kanuri, tracing the group's origins, history, and evolution. Its editors, two Nigerian scholars, reveal how Boko Haram's leaders manipulate Islamic theology for the legitimization, radicalization, indoctrination and dissemination of their ideas across West Africa. Mandatory reading for anyone wishing to grasp the underpinnings of Boko Haram's insurgency, particularly how the group strives to delegitimize its rivals and establish its beliefs as a dominant strand of Islamic thought in West Africa's religious marketplace.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter by Razeshta Sethna examines her experiences as a print journalist for the Dawn Media Group, and a presenter for Geo TV and Dawn TV. Sethna reveals professional tensions between levels of editorial control and the failure of newspaper owners and editors to protect journalists, and she illuminates ways that fear works to prevent journalists from protesting against the murder of colleagues. She unravels connections between violent politics, state violence, and the media. These involve the Muttahida Qaumi Movement party (MQM), whose militants have burnt the city’s newspaper offices and threatened journalists—and the military and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agencies who pressure senior editors to censor views considered too liberal, keep silence around the state’s repression of democratic freedoms and human rights, and the ‘disappearances’ of activists in Balochistan. Notwithstanding, the proliferation of Karachi’s television media since 2007 has positioned journalists at the forefront of open criticism against violence.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's professional and personal milestones that followed the crisis of 1949 involving The Illustrated Man. The insights that emerged from Bradbury's April 1949 exchange of letters with Don Congdon renewed the writer's confidence in his submissions. Since then, he worked with Congdon ever more closely to have his Green Town stories, science fiction tales, and fantasies get through the offices of the mainstream magazine editors. By June 1949, Congdon had at least eighteen active story files. This chapter discusses memorable moments in Bradbury's life and career in 1949, including his interaction with UCLA's writing group; his lectures on writing; and his meeting with Theodore Sturgeon and Walter Bradbury. It also considers Bradbury's readings during the period and concludes by noting the transformation of his concept of a Martian story collection into a unified work more in line with Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio.

Shaffer, Howard J., Alexander Blaszczynski, Robert Ladouceur, Davis Fong, and Peter Collins, eds. Responsible Gambling. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780190074562.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume reflects the perspectives of a diverse group of primary stakeholders interested in responsible gambling activities and programs. It also marks a watershed moment in the activities of the International Group on Responsible Gambling. The Reno Model, introduced by Blaszczynski, Ladouceur, and Shaffer in 2004, has provided the seminal architecture for understanding, creating, and implementing responsible gambling activities and programs. This model stimulated considerable interest and growth of responsible gambling activities around the world. This development contributed to the establishment of the editors’ international working group on responsible gambling—and the need to bring together a variety of divergent perspectives associated with responsible gambling. Stakeholders often overlook these viewpoints, protect a narrow view of responsible gambling, and avoid the scientific evidence associated with responsible gambling. Consequently, the primary purpose of this book is to discuss and formulate guidelines, elaborate principles, and stimulate discussion related to responsible gambling policies and activities. In addition, this book emphasizes the continuing need to empirically evaluate the efficacy, reach, and influence of responsible gambling activities. The contents of this volume represent the viewpoints of key stakeholders who are vested with the obligation to minimize harm and protect consumers (e.g., regulators, governments, academics, clinicians, individuals, gamblers, and the general community). This first-of-its-kind book provides an overall summary of the respective viewpoints, insights, and critical but constructive suggestions relevant to advancing the aims and objectives of responsible gambling.

Full text
Abstract:
Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century surveys American geographers' current research in their specialty areas and tracks trends and innovations in the many subfields of geography. As such, it is both a 'state of the discipline' assessment and a topical reference. It includes an introduction by the editors and 47 chapters, each on a specific specialty. The authors of each chapter were chosen by their specialty group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Based on a process of review and revision, the chapters in this volume have become truly representative of the recent scholarship of American geographers. While it focuses on work since 1990, it additionally includes related prior work and work by non-American geographers. The initial Geography in America was published in 1989 and has become a benchmark reference of American geographical research during the 1980s. This latest volume is completely new and features a preface written by the eminent geographer, Gilbert White.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the March 18, 1970, sit-in at Ladies' Home Journal (LHJ), a crucial episode in feminist media activism that had dramatic internal and external consequences for women's liberation. Conceived as a radical action by a small group of women incensed at the demeaning portrayal of women in a publication that touted itself as “the magazine women believe in,” the LHJ protest was an unpredictable success, precipitating significant changes in editorial and employment practices at women's magazines. That outcome was the product of several factors, including the emphases of the print and broadcast coverage of the LHJ events as well as the action's timing among a wave of protests and discrimination complaints launched in 1970 by women employees of major media institutions. Equally important was the recognition of the magazine's editors—and those of their sister publications—that incorporating and commodifying women's liberation was more profitable than resisting it, processes that would soon escalate across all forms of mass media.

Abstract:
Scientists must communicate their work through clear writing and publish it where it will be read. To succeed, you need method, but also need to understand the worlds of journals, publishers and science evaluation. The Editor’s Guide to Writing and Publishing Science provides a comprehensive approach to how to write engaging papers, and strategies for publishing where they will be read and have impact. Drawing on decades of experience as a scientist, mentor and chief editor, Michael Hochberg offers a unique, authoritative view on writing science and into the little-known worlds of journals and publication. Succeeding in science means being a citizen of science, and The Editor’s Guide educates the reader in some of the most pressing issues and possible solutions, and provides key references for deeper exploration. Developing one’s career does not mean careerism, and Hochberg provides guidelines and advice for young researchers to engage in the craft of science, forge collaborations, contribute to the scientific commons as a peer reviewer and interact through social media. Understanding the challenges and opportunities in publishing is only possible with knowledge of how science communication is changing, and the reader is introduced to the important, emerging world of Open Science. Written in a practical and accessible way for students, postdoctoral researchers, early-career scientists and professionals across a wide range of scientific fields, The Editor’s Guide is a powerful tool for learning and improving individual skills, and can be the basis for discussion groups, or used as a text for dedicated classroom courses.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Ray Bradbury's 1951 trip to New York, describing it as more personally stressful than any of his previous visits. While in New York, Bradbury wrote two new pages for “The Magical Kitchen” and produced a new page for a very short time-travel piece titled “The Dragon.” He also felt that he could handle the unpredictability of the New York publishing world this time around. This chapter begins with a discussion of Bradbury's itinerary in New York, including meetings with magazine editors such as Eleanor Stierham of Today's Woman and a lecture on writing at Columbia University; he also watched a first-run performance of Darkness at Noon, the Sidney Kingsley adaptation of Arthur Koestler's novel. The chapter then turns to a series of unpleasant encounters that unnerved Bradbury, particularly the four editorial parties he attended and his confrontation with a group of ballet dancers. Bradbury articulated his feelings in “A Flight of Ravens,” his highly autobiographical story of the final days of his New York trip.

Bork, Reinhard, and Kristin van Zwieten, eds. Commentary on the European Insolvency Regulation. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198727286.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides a detailed article-by-article commentary on the recast EU Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings (EIR), written by a group of experts drawn from several European jurisdictions. The commentary is prefaced by an introductory chapter that explains the rationale for the EIR, charts the background to its enactment, and sketches its key features as originally made and as recast. The commentary that follows has been published in time to cover the long-awaited and much-debated recast Regulation which was finalised in 2015. The introduction of the recast EIR has given authors and editors the opportunity to analyse a newly drafted and modernised law, containing a highly sophisticated set of rules designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Member State insolvency laws in cross-border cases. The timing of publication will enable practitioners and scholars to equip themselves with a thorough understanding of the recast EIR ahead of full implementation in 2017. The article-by-article analysis has a multi-jurisdictional focus which reports and evaluates significant developments in the application of the Regulation across Member States. This is a key new work for all those who advise on or research European insolvency law.

Abstract:
This chapter examines attempts to popularize and democratize news online through collaborative filtering. Collaborative filtering offers a means to replace the role of professional editors in setting the news agenda and deciding which stories deserve the most prominence. Instead of professional editors, collaborative filtering relies on algorithms to sort, rank, and prioritize the news based on the activity of large groups of web users. Various news sites have added some aspect of collaborative filtering, but the chapter focuses on social news sites (Reddit, Newsvine, and Slashdot) because they allow their users to make conscious voting choices about which stories should be most prominent. These sites epitomize the defining characteristics of the social Web and apply them to news.

Islamic book culture dates back to late antiquity, when Muslim scholars began to write down their doctrines on parchment, papyrus, and paper and then to compose increasingly elaborate analyses of, and commentaries on, these ideas. Movable type was adopted in the Middle East only in the early nineteenth century, and it wasn't until the second half of the century that the first works of classical Islamic religious scholarship were printed there. But from that moment on, as this book reveals, the technology of print transformed Islamic scholarship and Arabic literature. The book tells the story of how a small group of editors and intellectuals brought forgotten works of Islamic literature into print and defined what became the classical canon of Islamic thought. Through the lens of the literary culture of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arab cities—especially Cairo, a hot spot of the nascent publishing business—the book explores the contributions of these individuals, who included some of the most important thinkers of the time. Through their efforts to find and publish classical literature, the book shows, many nearly lost works were recovered, disseminated, and harnessed for agendas of linguistic, ethical, and religious reform. The book is an examination of the central role printing and its advocates played in the intellectual history of the modern Arab world.
