In mathematics, learning outcomes are said to be particularly limited, especially in poorer provinces of the country (Department of Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation [DPME] 2012). The study reported in this article explored the perceptions and beliefs on teaching mathematics in Grade R, compared with actual classroom practices, of selected teachers in a range of schools and Early Childhood Development Centres in the Eastern Cape. During August 1996, stripe (yellow) rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, was observed for the first time on bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) in the Western Cape, South Africa. Ensuing surveys during the growing season indicated that stripe rust occurred throughout most of the wheat-producing areas in the winter rainfall regions of the Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape provinces. The disease was also observed on irrigated wheat in the summer rainfall area south of Kimberley. Stripe rust was most severe in the Western Cape, where prolonged cool and wet conditions favored epidemi

Abstract The outcrop of the Ecca Group in the Eastern Cape Province was investigated in order to reveal petrographic and geophysical characteristics of the formations that make up the group which are vital information when considering fracking of the Karoo for shale gas. The petrographic study reveals that the rocks of the Ecca Group are both argillaceous and arenaceous rock with quartz, feldspar, micas and lithics as the framework minerals. The sandstones are graywackes, immature and poorly sorted, thus giving an indication that the source area is near. The observed heavy minerals aswell as t

Abstract Fossil wood is described from the Late Permian Middleton Formation, Adelaide Subgroup, Beaufort Group of the Karoo Supergroup in the Easter Cape Province, South Africa. The wood consists of in situ tree trunks up to 9 m long, partially enclosed in fine-grained sandstone surrounded by argillaceous mudstone and siltstone. The strata are poorly exposed due to the eroded and denuded land surface. All are lying horizontally and none are in upright growth positions. Comparisons of the study site lithologies with known surrounding Middleton Formation lithostratigraphy supports the interpreta

Abstract Diagenesis is one of the factors that affect reservoir quality in sandstones. Knowledge of diagenetic transformation and how it impacts the development of porosity in reservoirs rocks is thus key to successful mineral exploration. To date, little is known about the diagenesis of the uranium-hosted sandstones of the Stormberg Group, Karoo Basin, South Africa. Petrographic study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) aided with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were employed for the diagenetic study of the sandstones. However, there is a lack of information regarding the prevalence and molecular identification of this virus in the environment. The objective of this study was to investigate the recovery and molecular identification of HAdV in sewage and mussel samples. All samples were subjected to transmission electron microscopy, viral DNA extraction and nested PCR amplification using adenovirus-specific primers targeting a conserved region of the hexon gene. White English-speaking South Africans have historically exhibited a weak attachment to South Africa and to their own ethnic group. An explanation for this may be that such social categories have previously brought about a negative social identity, and have thus necessitated a decrease in social category salience. The present study, constituting a repetition and extension of a study by Morse, Mann and Nel (1977), explored the possibility that this situation might be changing as a result of this country's social transformation. It thus investigated whether social identity salience was increasing
